Robert Lewandowski silenced Old Trafford early by slotting home an early penalty, which was given away by Fernandes, to give Barcelona the half time advantage.
However, the introduction of Antony in place of Wout Weghorst paid instant dividends as they took over.
Brazilian Fred rifled home an equaliser straight after the restart before Antony fired home the winner with just 18 minutes remaining.
Boss Erik ten Hag was hailed with his tactical masterstroke afterwards – and he even had the club’s most-successful manager ever Sir Alex Ferguson up on his feet fist-pumping.

However, after the dust had settled on United’s win and attentions turned to the Europa League Last-16 draw on Friday, fans quickly took to Twitter to rub salt in Xavi’s wounds.
The Barcelona legend hit the headlines after he forgot Fernandes’ name ahead of his side’s trip to United, with him instead calling him “the Portuguese guy”.
He dropped the clanger while discussing the impact of Ten Hag, saying: “He is getting all the talent out of his players. You see [Jadon] Sancho, [Marcus] Rashford, the Portuguese guy and look how Fred is playing.”
One tweeted: “Hello Xavi, his name is Bruno Fernandes, you can call him the Magnifico if you like. He is my captain. Put some respect on his name.”

Arsenal’s horror Europa League draw revealed with Mikel Arteta’s side facing tougher test than Man Utd in last-16

ARSENAL face a far tougher test than Manchester United in the Europa League last 16 – thanks to a quirk of the rules. The Gunners easily qualified as group winners whereas the Red Devils got through via a play-off, albeit a stirring 4-3 aggregate win over Barcelona.
Mikel Arteta knows Arsenal are virtually guaranteed a tough drawCredit: AP
The eight group-toppers are seeded for the next stage.
But the eight non-seeds include sides dropping down from the Champions League.
That means Premier League leaders Arsenal could meet Juventus, Roma or Sevilla amongst many stiff options.
At least they can’t meet United – not yet anyway – because the rules also keep teams from the same country apart in the last 16,

Arsenal’s possible opponents are: Union Berlin, Juventus, Bayer Leverkusen, Roma, Sevilla, Sporting Lisbon and Shakhtar.
In contrast, United appear to have it easier as they’ll be paired against one of these clubs: Union Saint-Gilloise, SC Freiburg, Ferencvaros, Feyenoord, Real Betis, Real Sociedad or Fenerbahce.

Weghorst joined the club from Burnley after agreeing to terminate his loan at Turkish side Besiktas.
Manager Erik ten Hag had hoped he would have solved his striker issue after the exit of Cristiano Ronaldo.
But due to his form, Weghorst has been moved to a deeper role, while Marcus Rashford has stepped up to lead the attack in prolific fashion.
And Neville has now claimed that the Red Devils would have missed out on signing the striker if he had been a more consistent goalscorer.

He told Sky Sports as the Dutchman lay falt out after missing a chance against Leicester: “Just look at Weghorst, collapsed on his back thinking, come on, give me a break.
“There is a couple moments in the game where Weghorst hasn’t got to crosses and maybe could have done as well, it’s not just the clear chances that we’ve seen.
“We’ve got Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink and Robbie Keane [in the Sky Sports studio] who were very good finishers, it’ll be interesting to see what they think.
“I don’t know why Weghorst isn’t taking these chances. I suppose if Weghorst was taking the chances he’d be scoring 20 goals a season and wouldn’t be available on a free loan.

“He’s doing a lot of work for the team, I imagine he’s very popular with his teammates, doing a lot of that work that Manchester United’s players in the last couple of seasons have been accused of not putting in.
“But then there’s just that quality thing in the final third which is maybe what counts in the big games and towards the end of the season, we’ll see.”
Weghorst was enjoying his loan spell in Turkey, having scored nine goals in 18 appearances in all competitions.
While he has not transitioned that form to the Premier League, he has helped the team perform in other areas of the game.

Man Utd ratings against Barcelona: Sensational Martinez and Fred everywhere – but Weghorst flops on big stage

IT was a samba party at Old Trafford on Thursday evening as Manchester United’s Brazilian duo sent them into the next round of the Europa League. Goals from Fred and Antony completed a second half comeback in front of a jubilant Stretford End.

However, United did not make it easy on themselves.
Erik ten Hag had gambled with a tactical reshuffle. And it backfired when Robert Lewandowski converted a penalty given away by Bruno Fernandes.
The Dutchman rang the changes at half time as Antony came on for Wout Weghorst.
And the move paid dividends as Fred arrowed in an effort seconds after the interval before Antony fired home a stunning winner.

    DAVID DE GEA – 6

Came very close to making a spectacular penalty save to deny Robert Lewandowski’s penalty when he got a hand to it but just couldn’t keep the ball out.
Brilliant finger-tip stop in the second-half to deny Jules Kounde header.
    AARON WAN-BISSAKA – 8
He has had an amazing renaissance under Ten Hag not just as a defender but further up the field.

He is known for those brilliant long-legged tackles when he scoops the ball away from an opponent and produced a brilliant early one of those. Surprise when he was taken off.
    RAPHAEL VARANE – 8
After ten years at Real Madrid he would relish this occasion as he did last week in the Nou Camp. Looked as calm and composed as ever as the atmosphere crackled.
Great block in injury time in front of the line to deny Lewandowski even though play would have been called back for offside.
    LISANDRO MARTINEZ – 9
Was everywhere around the box putting his body on the line with blocks and judging his tackles to perfection.
Every time a team-mate was in trouble or the ball ran dangerously loose he was there.
    LUKE SHAW – 7
Once again he is among the best full-backs in football.
Didn’t give up on a ball running out of play to produce a back heel which kept it alive and helped lead to the winning goal.
    CASEMIRO – 7
Struggled to stamp his authority on the game in the first half and sat very deep as Fred roamed.
Became more influential in the second period.
    FRED – 8
Fred put in a superb second half performanceCredit: Getty
Never stopped running all night as he chased the ball down in the central third.
Then just after the break he was in the right spot to meet Fernandes’ square ball, take a touch and produce a great finish into the bottom right-hand corner.
    BRUNO FERNANDES – 6
Had a good early chance saved and then made an absolutely unforgiveable error just inside his own box.
There was absolutely no danger and therefore no need to pull back Alejandro Balde to concede the penalty.
Made up for that with an assist for Fred and played a role in the winner too.
    JADON SANCHO – 6
Started in the number ten role but had little or no influence on the game.
Moved out wide at the start of the second-half and made the pass for Fernandes to set up Fred for his goal.
    MARCUS RASHFORD – 7
Marcus Rashford went off injuredCredit: PA
Clearly seen as the main danger by Barca they were doing everything to stop him getting the ball.
When he was moved from the left into a central position at the start of the second-half he caused more problems by creating space for his fellow frontmen.
    WOUT WEGHORST – 4
Played up front rather than as a number ten but may as well have not been on the pitch.
How has the club ended up with a player of such limited ability as a regular starter? Game changed in United’s favour when he was taken off at half-time.
    SUBS:
    ANTONY (on for Weghorst 46) – 7
Antony’s classy finish made the difference for UnitedCredit: AP
The substitution and consequent reshuffle that changed the game. Had an immediate influence with his pace down the right then fired home the dramatic winner.
    ALEJANDRO GARNACHO (Sancho 67) – 6
Always makes an impact when he comes on with his positive approach to the game charging forward and defenders.

    DIOGO DALOT (Wan-Bissaka 67) – 6
Ten Hag is blessed to have two right full-backs playing to such a high level at the moment, whoever is chosen.
    SCOTT MCTOMINAY (Rashford 88) – 5
Another subs appearance as he edges back into the first team reckoning. But it is going to be tough for him to break into this team. More

Man Utd 2 Barcelona 1 (4-3): Reds win Europa League thriller as inspired Fred and Antony winner send them to last-16

And now they head to Wembley in search of a first trophy in six years – with four pieces of silverware still to play for in all this season.
Goals from the Brazilian duo of Fred and Antony saw United recover from a half-time deficit to dispatch the Spanish league leaders on a night to remember.
Erik ten Hag, who has transformed an ailing monolith with his quiet authority over the last six months, had enjoyed dinner with Sir Alex Ferguson earlier in the week.
And this was a hedonistic reminder of Fergie times, a retro night which made you recognise, after years of slumber, what this once-mighty club is all about.

Barcelona had bossed the first half and led through a Robert Lewandowski but after Ten Hag replaced the lumbering Wout Weghorst with Antony at the break, United attacked with purpose and passion and fully deserved their place in the Europa League’s last 16.
Next the Red Devils head to Wembley to face Newcastle in Sunday’s Carabao Cup Final, where they will be to end the club’s longest trophy drought in four decades.
In terms of the recent form and the history of both clubs, this was a world-class fixture, out of context as a Europa League play-off tie.
These two have contested three major finals, and a fair few more epic encounters down the years – now both are resurgent after a period in the doldrums.

The pre-match excitement was palpable – the primal roar and the acrid stench of pyrotechnics at kick-off time spoke of past glories.
Ten Hag made no attempt to rest first-teamers ahead of Wembley, it would have been ill-mannered in the extreme to disrespect guests of this calibre.
Barca’s wonderkids, Pedri and Gavi, were both injured but the runaway La Liga leaders still had ample star quality.
United began at a fair old pelt, former Real Madid man Casemiro – smelling the scent of Clasicos past – played a cute diagonal pass to send Fernandes clean through but Marc-Andre ter Stegen saved his angled shot with his legs.
After failing to make a difference in the Barca box, the United skipper managed to do so in his own penalty area.
It was a daft, needless spot-kick to concede – Raphael Varane had headed clear a cross and Alejandro Balde was moving away from goal, near the edge of the box, when Fernandes dragged him down.
It was soft but ref Clement Turpin was right to award it and, after a stuttering run-up, Lewandowski scored – David De Gea getting a hand to it but only able to help it into the net.
Barca were certainly proving themselves smarter at winning fouls and Ten Hag was becoming increasingly animated on the touchline.

United were struggling to make inroads, only a volleyed attempted cross from Fred worried Ter Stegen for a second but it landed on top of the goal net.
De Gea almost gifted Barca a second in first-half injury-time when he passed straight to Sergi Roberto but Casemiro staged an heroic resue act, with a tackle, then a block to deny Franck Kessie.
At half-time, Ten Hag sent on Antony in place of Wout Weghorst, moving Rashford into the centre.
And United were level within 75 seconds of the restart, Jadon Sancho feeding Fernandes who swept a pass to Fred, the Brazilian midfielder shinning his effort past Ter Stegen.
The din was deafening and there was an even louder roar soon after when Varane sent Antony galloping down the right but he was denied by an excellent sliding tackle from Andreas Christensen.
The tempo of United’s play and the volume of their supporters had been cranked up significantly and Barca, so assured in the first half, were visibly rocking.
Fernandes riled the visitors by drilling the ball into the body of a prone Frenkie De Jong – the man who refused to move to Old Trafford last summer.
The Portuguese was booked and the Stretford End saluted him.
The momentum has all been with United – their tackling, especially from Lisandro Martinez, was emphatic, their passing swift and purposeful.
The Red Devils are now heading to Wembley on Sunday for the Carabao Cup FinalCredit: Richard Pelham / The Sun
But then De Jong curled in a centre and Jules Kounde’s header forced a gymnastic save from De Gea, tipping over the bar.
Ten Hag sent on his second peroxide blond winger, Alejandro Garnacho, joining Antony. As a gentleman it was a surprise the United boss hadn’t preferred them both in the first place.
Lewandowski crunched into Casemiro, both men needing treatment, Barca’s big Pole getting booked.

The winner arrived on 73 minutes and it owed a lot to a sensational back-heel from Luke Shaw, on the run, which prevented the ball going out for a goal-kick.
From there, Fernandes fed Garnacho, who had a shot blocked, as did Fred, before Antony side-footed a peachy effort inside the far corner.
Varane cleared off the line from Lewandowski deep in injury-time.
United deserved their win, though. Now they must drag their battered bodies south for a Cup final against a well-rested Newcastle.
