Sheringham failed to acknowledge Cole as he was replaced, a snub the latter took to heart and held against his future Red Devils team-mate.
But the bad blood was put to bed ten years after they retired when the pair found themselves in the same nightclub, although Sheringham initially thought they could end up coming to blows.
He told talkSPORT: “Probably about ten years after we finished playing, I was in a nightclub with a couple of pals.
“Andy was in the nightclub and I saw him walking towards me.

“And I thought to myself, ‘He looks a little bit stern, this looks a bit naughty’.
“I just looked over his shoulder and his wife Shirley was in the background, and I could see her looking over and looking a little bit apprehensive.
“I thought ‘Hello, this could turn a bit nasty’, I don’t know whether he’s going to try and put one on me or what.”
Cole, 51, was the initiator of the surprise truce – which came as a huge surprise to Sheringham.

He recalled: “He walked over and he said, ‘Ted look, let’s let bygones be bygones and forget about what’s happened and move on’.
“He put his hand out and I was like, ‘Wow, I did not expect that Andy’.
“But yeah I’m happy to do that, put my hand out and shook hands.”
Cole made a total of 245 appearances for United, scoring 121 goals and providing 45 assists.
Sheringham, 56, wasn’t as prolific as his strike rival, scoring 46 goals and racking up 29 assists in 153 appearances for the Red Devils.
Cole retired from football in November 2008, bringing down the curtain on a 19-year professional career.
Sheringham, meanwhile, also retired the same year as his former team-mate. More

Man Utd transfer blow as Real Madrid set to offer Camavinga new contract with eye-watering release clause

MANCHESTER UNITED look set to miss out on Eduardo Camavinga as Real Madrid open new contract talks with the midfielder. The 20-year-old joined Real Madrid in 2021 for £26million as a long-term replacement for Casemiro.

Madrid want a reported £115million for the six-cap French international, with United willing to break their club record to sign him.
However, Los Blancos have made a bold move in their attempt to lock down Camavinga, which could jeopardise United chances of pinching the player.
According to The Athletic, the Spanish team have responded to United’s moves by offering the Frenchman a potential €1billion (£874million) release clause.
The club had also given this to Eder Militao, Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior last summer.

The new release clause would make it almost impossible for Ten Hag’s team to secure Camavinga, even with the sale of the club looming.
Camavinga has played a key role within Real Madrid, who are preparing for major changes with veteran duo Luka Modric and Toni Kroos both potentially leaving this summer.
He has seen massive success with the Spanish club, winning both LaLiga and the Champions League in the last year.
The midfielder also helped in France’s bid for the World Cup in December, and has just joined the national squad for their matches during this month’s break.

This success has made him a key target for clubs including Man Utd.
United have also been targeting Frenkie de Jong and possibly a new goalkeeper as David De Gea’s contract runs down.
The Red Devils have also prioritised looking for a new forward for the summer, with Harry Kane, Tammy Abraham and Victor Osimhen heavily linked with the club.
However, if plans to sell the club fall through these manoeuvrings may end up falling through.
Madrid face Valladolid next weekend in their next match in LaLiga, and Chelsea in the quarter-final of the Champions League on April 12. More

Erik ten Hag has shocked us all in Holland… the Cristiano Ronaldo bombshell has ended up helping him at Man Utd

The Dutchman already has one trophy and is looking to add two more this seasonCredit: Getty
Ten Hag arrived at Old Trafford last summer with the club on a six-year trophy drought.
Despite a rocky start, he has slowly transformed the Red Devils into a thrilling attacking unit with Marcus Rashford now one of the most-lethal strikers in Europe.
Last month he won his first piece of silverware as United beat Newcastle to lift the Carabao Cup.
They are also pushing for two more trophies, with a Europa League quarter final against Sevilla on the horizon as well as an FA Cup semi with Brighton.

And United remain on course to secure a top four finish and a return to Champions League football as they sit third in the Premier League, three points ahead of fifth-placed Newcastle.
And Gullit admitted during an interview with A Bola that he and everyone else back in Holland are impressed with how well the ex-Ajax man has done.
He said: “I’m surprised, we’re all surprised, with Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.
“The Dutch Eredivisie does not have the same levels of competitiveness as the Premier League, perhaps the most attractive championship in world football, but the truth is that he was able to impose a work philosophy and the playing formula he advocates.”

Ten Hag was also on the receiving end of a fierce public attack from Cristiano Ronaldo after benching the Portuguese legend earlier in the campaign.
But he refused to be drawn into a slanging match and the 37-year-old forward ended up having his contract terminated in December and is now earning a fortune playing in Saudi Arabia while his old team continue to thrive.
Gullit added: “Personally, I think that the very controversial episode with Cristiano Ronaldo ended up benefiting him.
“At that moment, with what he said and did, he won over the dressing room and the fans. The results confirm it.
“That’s what Cristiano decided. His time at Manchester United, after the run-ins with Erik ten Hag, ran out of steam.
“In the end, the situation turned out to benefit both of them.
“Cristiano is happy where he is, Erik ten Hag too, they both won.” More

Luke Shaw gets sent off for two yellows in 54 SECONDS as Foden is sacrificed after just 12 minutes on the pitch

LUKE SHAW was given his marching orders in the second half of England’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy for two bookings in less than a MINUTE.The Manchester United defender received his first yellow of the match in the 78th minute for time-wasting in a bid to help the Three Lions maintain their 2-1 lead.

And he found himself heading for an early shower a few seconds later after a clumsy tackle.
Shaw, 27, received his two bookings in a mere 54 SECONDS.
Manager Gareth Southgate had to quickly reshuffle the pack following Shaw’s dismissal.
And it was poor Phil Foden – one of England’s star performers at the World Cup – who was the sacrificial lamb.

The Manchester City winger had only come on in the 69th minute to replace club mate Jack Grealish.
But on 81 minutes, he was all frowns as Southgate hooked him for Kieran Trippier.
Shaw’s sending-off has ruled him out of Sunday’s qualifier against Ukraine at Wembley.
Footy fans were quick to react to Shaws’ early bath, with one saying: “Fix up, Luke Shaw.”

Another said: “Luke Shaw getting 2 yellow cards in 54 seconds – haha.”
And another said: “Luke Shaw can hardly complain.
“Second yellow, within a minute of the first after the referee had already booked Rice and Walker for time-wasting.”
One remarked: “Absolute masterclass from Luke Shaw that.”
Another chimed in: “Luke Shaw. No good.”
Shaw’s dismissal mattered little as Southgate’s troops held out for a massive victory in Naples.
Goals from Declan Rice and Harry Kane saw the Three Lions run out 2-1 winners and claim top spot in Group C.
Mateo Retegui pulled one back, on his debut, on 56 minutes with a neat finish – and then followed long periods of Italy dominance, before Shaw really put his side up against it. More

Liverpool have explored the prospect of bringing Mitchell to Anfield, according to the Independent.
However, the same source suggests the Reds could face competition from United, who may also choose to target the mastermind.
That’s if the Ratcliffe-led consortium is successful in its bid to buy the Red Devils.
Mitchell is claimed to have been touted for an Old Trafford role should Ratcliffe and Co fight off rival interest from Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani.

US hedge fund Elliott Management have also made an offer to take a minority stake in the club.
Ratcliffe’s INEOS group are said to already have an idea as to what their potential structure at the club will be.
It’s not yet clear, however, what exact role Mitchell has been identified for at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile at Anfield, current sporting director Julian Ward is set to step down this summer, just a year after taking over from Michael Edwards.

Mitchell has been linked with taking the hot seat in what is expected to be a busy summer for Jurgen Klopp and Co.
But a successful Ratcliffe takeover at Old Trafford could see the Red Devils beat Liverpool to the acquisition.
Transfer expert Mitchell previously worked at RB Leipzig and Tottenham before joining Monaco.
Speaking on his decision to leave the Ligue 1 side, Mitchell told Nice Matin: “Yes, it was a very difficult decision.
“I loved my experience at this club. I have always felt a lot of support from President Dmitry Rybolovlev and the Principality.
“But I have spent a lot of time away from home and my loved ones in recent years. I feel that the mission I had, which was to rebuild the sports project, has been fulfilled.” More

But Ronaldo bounced around as if it was his first call-up when he engaged with the defender he has publicly described as his favourite squad-mate at Old Trafford.
The 38-year-old’s brutal departure and ensuing move to Al-Nassr was forgotten as he grabbed Dalot for some physical banter.

Some fans homed in on a side-story – a painful few seconds when keeper Jose Sa when he held his hand out high for Ron to shake but got no response.
Viewers were quick to say he was “left hanging”.
Ronaldo accused United chiefs of “betraying” him” and claimed manager Erik ten Hag “disrespected” him during his decisive talkTV interview with Sun columnist Piers Morgan last November.
But now the Real Madrid and Juventus legend Ronaldo describes his disappointing second spell at Old Trafford as “part of my growth” and insists his exit left him a “better man”.
And his bond with Dalot looks as fresh as ever.
That’s not surprising as Ron picked out the 24-year-old when asked to name his top Red Devils’ team-mate shortly before he left Old Trafford.
He said: “I can mention probably Dalot. Diogo Dalot is an example. He is young, but he is very, very professional.
“And I’m not doubting that he’s going to have longevity in football because he’s young, he’s smart, intelligent, and is very professional.
“You have a few more, but like him it’s difficult to say… probably [Lisandro] Martinez, and Casemiro and he’s in his 30s – but I will say Dalot.” More
