Man Utd fans spot surprising detail on Mason Greenwood’s social media profiles as his career hangs in balance

MASON Greenwood’s social media profiles still say he is a Nike athlete – despite him being dropped by the global sports brand more than two months ago. Manchester United fans spotted the mistake on the footballer’s Twitter and Instagram accounts, which he hasn’t posted on since January 2022.
Charges against Mason Greenwood, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service

The forward, 21, stopped playing for the Red Devils last year when he was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour.
Greenwood was cleared of any wrongdoing last month when the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges, but his future with the club remains uncertain.
Nike also terminated its multimillion-pound boot deal with the sportsman, who cannot play but is getting his £75,000-a-week wage.
He was officially let go when he was first charged, but a spokesperson suggested Greenwood’s deal will not be renewed.

They said: “Mason Greenwood is no longer a Nike athlete.”
However, he continues to publicly affiliate himself with the sportswear giant.
His Instagram, where he has 2.7 million followers, links to the official Nike football page, while he describes himself as a “Nike athlete” on Twitter, where he has 1.3 million.
Footie fans are demanding he “immediately” remove any mention of the brand.

One said: “Greenwood needs to take off ‘Nike athlete’ from his Twitter bio or I’ll stop using anything.”
Another wrote: “I see Greenwood still has Nike on his Twitter. Please remove immediately.”
The Sun has contacted Nike for comment.
Greenwood, who has a contract at Old Trafford until 2025, remains suspended, meaning he cannot train or play.
He had his first face-to-face meeting with Man Utd chiefs since his suspension on February 16, sparking rumours he may be gearing up to return.
The summit was his chance to give his account to the club of the circumstances around social media posts by a woman which led to his arrest last year.
A source said: “Only when the club has the full picture can they start to move things forward.”
His teammates are said to be hesitant about welcoming him back.
An insider said: “The players are open to him returning to the team but the scrutiny could be massively distracting.
“The dressing room is the happiest it has been for ages and no one wants to rock the boat.”
It could mean he seeks a career abroad, with some suggesting he is eyeing a move to China while others say AC Milan is making inquiries.
If Greenwood does leave United, his shirt number will be up for grabs – and one player is primed to take it.
The Express reports that Brazilian star Antony is in the running to inherit number 11.

Before his arrest, Greenwood was valued at around £50million and regarded as one of the hottest young talents in European football.

Man Utd ‘place Atalanta star Rasmus Hojlund on striker transfer shortlist’ but face battle with Arsenal and Chelsea

MANCHESTER UNITED have reportedly placed Atalanta star Rasmus Hojlund on their shortlist for a new striker. But they face competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea for the Danish star.
Man Utd are keen on signing Arsenal and Chelsea target Rasmus Hojlund from AtalantaCredit: Rex

Hojlund, 20, has made waves this season in Italy with eight goals for Atalanta.
He then scored a hat-trick on his Denmark debut last month before bagging another two strikes in the following game.
And Scandinavian publisher B.T. claims United have formally declared their interest in a summer transfer.
It’s reckoned the Red Devils have joined Spanish giants Real Madrid in submitting a “letter of interest” to Atalanta.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
While not binding, the paper shows that United are serious about Hojlund and could soon follow up with a concrete bid.
However, it’s added that the player is just one of “three to five” strikers on Erik ten Hag’s wishlist.
And that could open the door for one of Arsenal or Chelsea to pounce.
They are also interested in signing Hojlund, despite being yet to submit a letter to his club.

But there are other European clubs in the running too.
Hojlund could yet end up staying in Italy, with Napoli, AC Milan and Juventus ready to pounce.
Impending Spanish champions Barcelona and German giants Bayern Munich also fancy the look of Hojlund.
And there is every chance he remains at Atalanta for another season.
However, Hojlund is not thinking about his future until he signs with a new agency.
And an agreement could be finalised in the coming weeks. More

Man Utd ‘keeping tabs on ex-Chelsea star Fikayo Tomori’ as Erik ten Hag eyes Maguire replacement transfer

MANCHESTER UNITED are eyeing a swoop for former Chelsea star Fikayo Tomori, according to reports. The 25-year-old central-half is currently riding high after helping AC Milan to seal a spot in the Champions League semi-final.

And that comes off the back of him playing a key role in the Serie A title success last season.
England international Tomori, who was left out of Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad, moved to the San Siro from Chelsea in 2021 after losing his place under Thomas Tuchel.
He remains under contract until 2025 but his impressive season has “garnered attention from Manchester United and Tottenham”, according to the Daily Mail.
And they add that both clubs are “keeping tabs on the defender”.

This fresh link comes amid reports that United boss Erik ten Hag is planning a major overhaul of his defence this summer.
We also revealed that club captain Harry Maguire, who has been benched for the majority of the campaign, is a shock £50m target for French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
The star has struggled for regular action this term and looks set to leave Old Trafford, with Tomori seemingly lined-up as a replacement.
The club are also booking to offload fellow defenders Eric Bailly, Alex Telles and Brandon Williams.

And outcast Phil Jones is departing when his contract expires in June.
Meanwhile, United have allegedly held talks with Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong already.
The right-back’s potential arrival could also mean that either, or both, of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot could head out of the exit door.
Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards burst out laughing when Tomori described Thierry Henry in glowing terms.
The CBS Sports pundits chatted to the ace, who grew up in Kent. And he had the panel in stitches with his comment after Milan’s triumph over Napoli this week.
Carragher said: “A little birdie tells me the guy who asked the question before me [Henry] is one of your biggest idols. What are your thoughts of him as a pundit as well as a player?”

Tomori replied: “As a player of course there’s not much to be said.
“Growing up, Thierry I hope you don’t mind me embarrassing you like this, but yeah I was a big fan and he was my idol. Obviously as I was getting older, I moved further back down the pitch.”
Then he cracked the former defenders in the studio up as he added: “As a pundit, he’s really funny.”
Carragher immediately jumped in, shouting: “Funny? Funny? That’s me and Micah not Thierry, he’s the analyst.”
But Tomori explained: “We were watching the video of him doing the guess who and he guessed himself twice instead of Oli [Giroud]. So yeah he’s really funny.”

And that prompted more hilarious reactions from the ex-players and host Kate Abdo.
But Abdo did have to apologise to Tomori after blunder pair Carragher and Richards both mispronounced his name as Fuh-kaw-ree instead of Fuh-kay-ow. More

Fuming Man Utd and Man City fans in revolt over ‘crazy’ campaign to make the clubs ditch their historic badges

FANS of Manchester United and Manchester City are in revolt over a “crazy” campaign to make them ditch their historic club badges. The crests feature a ship — which Left-wing critics say symbolises the slave trade.

Local experts say it actually represents the city’s proud free trade history.
Local MP Graham Stringer said: “Manchester had nothing to do with the slave trade.”
The campaign was denounced as “woke nonsense” yesterday.
Fans, politicians and historians insisted the three-masted vessel was a proud symbol of the city’s global free trade links and must stay on shirts.
    READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWS
Left-wing critics have called for its removal — despite slavery being abolished in this country long before United or City were formed.
Both clubs refused to comment but last night sources stressed they had no plans to modify their crests, which branding experts said would cost millions.
Local Labour MP Graham Stringer said the “crazy” claim tarnished the northern city’s proud history of anti-discrimination.
He added: “Manchester had nothing to do with the slave trade.
    Most read in Football
“People from the city at the time of the US Civil War in 1861 protested against slavery.
“This is one of the craziest campaigns I have ever seen.”
Guardian commentator Simon Hattenstone yesterday questioned whether the ship was a symbol of a “crime against humanity”.
He said the area’s cotton mills thrived as a result of the crop picked by US slaves.
The newspaper has recently apologised for what it considers to be its own links to the slave trade.
He wrote: “The ship has nothing to do with football and everything to do with the business from which Manchester made its money.
“The product of slavery became so subtly embedded in our culture that we celebrated it in our club badges even without realising it.”
However local experts said Lancashire mill workers at the time refused on principle to deal with cotton picked by slaves.
United historian JP O’Neill, who authored Red Rebels: United and the FC Revolution, said of Hattenstone: “His ‘logic’ is as ridiculous as it is contradictory.
“Not only did the club badges long post-date the abolition of slavery, the clubs themselves were only founded decades after slavery was ended.
“The first ship to arrive in Manchester came in 1894 with the opening of the Ship Canal.
“In Manchester, cotton workers during the American Civil War refused to work with slave-picked cotton, putting their livelihoods at risk.”
Tory MP Katherine Fletcher, who is from Wythenshawe and a United season-ticket holder, added: “I’ve always seen the ship logo as a symbol of our industrial trading heritage.
“Manchester people are some of the most even-handed and welcoming in the world.”
Historian Jonathan Schofield added: “It’s a symbol of free trade.
“The idea is we will have equality throughout the world because people will have the same rights to do business with each other.”
It is claimed the ships derive from Manchester’s coat of arms, adopted in 1842.
That was 35 years after the slave trade had been outlawed in the British Empire.
Manchester City was not established in its current form until 1894 while United switched from Newton Heath in 1902.
Fans at the stadiums yesterday advised campaigners to steer clear of their club’s badges.
Pilot Mike Goldstein, 57, who has been going to City games since he was eight, said: “It’s just woke nonsense.
“You can’t keep on going back.
“It’d be like being mad at the Italians for the Roman Empire.”
Sitting on a bench outside Old Trafford, Man United fan Peter Shaw, 34, said: “It’s ridiculous to remove it.
“It’s celebrating the Ship Canal and nothing to do with the slave trade.”
Pallet fitter Joe Burazin, 21, added: “It’s part of the club’s heritage.
“These people should keep their hands off.”
Chef and United fan Jamie Parkhouse, 37, said: “People are rightly asking questions about the slave trade but this shouldn’t be one of them.
“The badge is about the Manchester Ship Canal and not slaves.
“To link the badge and the slave trade is so over-the-top.”
    Fans also vented online.
One tweeted: “It’s a picture of a ship not a ‘slave’ ship.
“Why do you lot continually try and find offence when none is there? Pathetic.”
James Delaney added: “So not really a symbol of slavery at all.
“More like a symbol of early global commerce and Britain’s dominance of it.”
A branding expert warned modifying the badges would cost millions.
It comes after other sports teams including the NFL’s Washington Redskins have changed their name after criticism from indigenous groups.
Nigel Currie said: “It would be a huge and expensive operation to change the United and City club crests.
“They have been around for decades and every replica shirt ever sold has them — literally millions of shirts which can’t be changed.
“The link with slavery is not nearly as strong or as clear as other potentially damaging historical links for sports teams.
“The cost to the clubs would be extremely high and the rationale for changing doesn’t sound strong and indeed there is debate over what the actual ships represent.
“While that debate remains, a change would seem unlikely.”
Last month The Guardian revealed that its founder John Edward Taylor was partners with companies which imported cotton picked by slaves.
At least nine of his 11 financial backers also had links to slavery.
Last night, Luthfur Rahman, the deputy leader of Manchester City Council, said: “We’re an industrious, international, multicultural city and have long been so.”
Work is under way to explore its past.

He added: “We’re in the middle of a long-term project that began in 2020 to highlight and reflect on aspects of the city’s past, including the city’s black history and connections to the slave trade.”

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag slammed as being ‘like a dictator’ by former star who claims he ‘made false promises’

Between 2013 and 2015 Ten Hag was in charge of managing the club’s reserve side, winning the Regionalliga Bayern in 2014.
And while there he managed a German footballer by the name of Riccardo Basta.
But Basta does not have fond memories of his time with the Dutchman.
The now 28-year-old accused Ten Hag of making false promises to him regarding his development before slamming his managerial style.

In an interview with Sport 1, he said: “Every child dreams of becoming a professional footballer and at Bayern I was very close to that dream.

“I thought that was great, of course. In the end, however, nothing came of it.

Basta would eventually leave Bayern in 2017 and now turns out for VfR Garching in Germany’s fifth tier.
Ten Hag on the other hand would head to Utrecht, where he would stay until joining Ajax in 2017.
Fast forward to today and Ten Hag will be mulling over his plan to ensure Man Utd overcome Sevilla after the 2-2 draw in the Europa League quarter-final first leg last week.

Garnacho has been named in his nation’s squad to take part in the tournament despite its schedule clashing with Man Utd’s season run-in.
The competition is set to commence on May 20, meaning Garnacho would miss the final two Premier League games of the season and the finals of the FA Cup and Europa League should they make them.
According to Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, United “do not want to give up” the winger for their last few games of the season.
Meanwhile, he reports the Argentine Federation and Under 20 coach Javier Mascherano are doing “everything possible” to include Garnacho in the squad.

Argentina had originally failed to qualify for the tournament, but after Fifa stripped Indonesia of hosting rights due to their opposition to Israel’s participation, the South Americans have stepped in to host.
