Man Utd ratings: Flops outclassed by Newcastle with De Gea sparing more blushes and Weghorst having day to forget

MANCHESTER UNITED were outclassed by Newcastle with only David de Gea sparring their blushes from further embarrassment. Second-half goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson put a dent in United’s Champions League hopes.

It was a day to forget for Erik ten Hag’s men, while Newcastle sit pretty in third.
Here is how Martin Blackburn rated Ten Hag’s performers.
    DAVID DE GEA – 7
Great double save to deny Isak and Willock. Bit of a mess with a goal-kick routine just before the Toon opener but then did brilliantly to tip Joelinton’s header onto the bar late on.
Could have been much worse but for the Spaniard.

    DIOGO DALOT – 5
Came in for the unwell Wan Bissaka. Deflected shot forced a save from Pope and one nice cross just evaded Rashford’s boot.
Had a tough time trying to keep the lively Saint Maximin quiet in the first half.

    RAPHAEL VARANE – 6
Solid defensively as he and Martinez spent much of the game on the back foot. Did well to deal with Willock as he chose the wrong option and went for goal.
Got forward at the end but his header from Sancho cross was tame and straight at Pope.

    LISANDRO MARTINEZ – 6
Great block from Isak’s shot and suggestions he handballed it rightly waved away.
Had a tough time trying to keep the Swede quiet but stuck to his task – looked bitterly frustrated as he sat on the bench after being subbed late on and was caught taking it out on the chair.

    LUKE SHAW – 5
Looked tired after his exertions with England and struggled against Willock for much of the afternoon.
Clever piece of defending to deny Burn a second goal and one useful cross as United searched for a leveller.

    SCOTT McTOMINAY – 5
Rewarded for his Scotland heroics with a rare start in the league.
Running battle with Guimaraes in the first half but came out second best for much of the game and not really a surprise when he was replaced by Fred as the visitors searched for an equaliser.

    MARCEL SABITZER – 5
Tried to push United on in the second half and opened the home side up a couple of times. Also saw a low shot blocked.
The on-loan man from Bayern Munich has been a useful addition to the squad but is not the same standard as the suspended Casemiro.
Antony is brought off by Erik ten HagCredit: Getty
    ANTONY – 6
Seemed to fancy his chances against Burn early on and the match up between the two was watchable.
Great back heel to send Dalot away down the right but planted a volley over when he should have hit the target. Ran out of puff and was hooked on the hour.
    BRUNO FERNANDES – 5
Wanted a pen for a challenge by Schar but neither the ref or the VAR agreed he was too theatrical. Home fans chanted ‘there’s only one Bruno’ in support of Guimaraes and the Portuguese was second best this time.
Shrugged off too easily by Gordon.

    MARCUS RASHFORD – 5
Completed his rapid recovery from toe injury which kept him out of England duty to start here – but may as well have had another day off.
Just failed to get on end of Dalot cross but found chances hard to come by.
Wout Weghorst had a day to forgetCredit: Getty
    WOUT WEGHORST – 4
Hit the side netting early on after good work by Antony but that was one of only seven touches in the first half.
Things didn’t improve after the break so it was no surprise when he was hooked for Martial just after the hour.
    SUBSTITUTES
    SANCHO (for Antony 61) – 5
A couple of useful crosses but did not have the impact ETH would have hoped.
    MARTIAL (for Weghorst 61 ) – 6
Clearance off the line from Schar kept United in it and one missed chance.
    FRED (for McTominay 82) – 5
Could not stem the black and white tide as the Toon continued to dominate.
    PELLISTRI (for Martinez 83) – 5
Not really enough time to affect the game from an attacking point of view

    LINDELOF (for Varane – 83) – 5

Newcastle 2 Man Utd 0: Well-drilled Toon secure huge win in race for Champions League as hosts leapfrog United to go 3rd

REVENGE was sweet for the Geordies as Newcastle moved into pole position to seal third at the expense of rotten Manchester United. The Toon Army’s big day out at Wembley was ruined in February when Erik Ten Hag’s side strolled to a 2-0 win in the Carabao Cup final.

But with the bit between their teeth, Newcastle steamrollered the Red Devils to thoroughly deserve this potentially seismic three points.
Thanks to second half goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson, Eddie Howe’s Mags leapfrog Manchester United into third as they go in search of a Champions League spot for the first time since 2003 under Sir Bobby Robson.
Man United might be going great guns in the cups but their league form is stuttering. A 7-0 drubbing to Liverpool, a goalless draw at home to Southampton, and then this mauling which left Ten Hag shellshocked on the St James’ Park touchline.
They remain a point of fifth-placed Tottenham with a game in hand yet, based on this evidence, they have a mammoth task on to finish inside the top four.

After their mid-winter wobble, including that heartbreaking defeat at Wembley, Toon were back on the trail of a top four finish following two straight wins.
The locals were all revved up and ready to go and Manchester United could have been three or four down at the break but for David de Gea and some woeful finishing.
The Spanish keeper’s double save kept out Alexander Isak and Willock early doors. Willock really should have done better with the rebound from point-blank range, and there were a good 50,000 heads in hands inside St James’ when the midfielder blazed over with the goal gaping just before half time.
Lackluster Man United failed to muster a shot on target by the break, the first time they had done so this season.

But the locals would have feared a repeat of the Carabao Cup final nightmare, where their side started like a steam train too.
It all seemed set up for attacking trio Marcus Rashford, Antony and Bruno Fernandes to come to life and burst the Geordie bubble, but it was more of the same in the second.
Livewire Allan Saint-Maximin and his box of tricks had Diogo Dalot on toast all afternoon. With the indispensable Casemiro still suspended, Brazil buddy Bruno Guimaraes bossed the midfield against Scott McTominay and Marcel Sabitzer, while Wout Weghorst offered nowt up top.
Ten Hag had seen enough with half an hour to go, hooking Antony and Weghorst.
But the Dutchman was spitting feathers moments later when Newcastle took the lead via Willock after his sorry side were sliced and diced.
Isak played in Guimaraes down the right hand side of the box, with the unmarked Samba star dinking it to the back post.
Saint-Maximin nodded back across goal, Willock – making up for those earlier misses – headed home and the Gallowgate exploded.
Toon sub Joelinton was only denied adding a second from a corner as the clock ticked on by a great De Gea save before Anthony Martial cleared Fabian Schar’s rebound on the line.
But it was game over when sub Wilson got in front of Victor Lindelof to nod Kieran Trippier’s free kick home with two minutes remaining.  More

Many expected the energetic Brazilian Fred to be named in the side to take on the Magpies.
However, the 30-year-old was only named as substitute with Scott McTominay and Marcel Sabitzer preferred.
United struggled to lay a glove on the Magpies throughout the opening period at St. James’ Park.
And supporters soon took to Twitter to vent their anger at the absence of Fred as even United legend Neville, commentating on Sky Sports, also revealed his surprise at his omission.

And he was even “more amazed” not to see him introduced off the bench at half time or early into the second period before Newcastle took the lead.
One fan fumed: “Seriously Ten Hag CANT be happy with how things are going!! His favorite is doing NOTHING. FRED HAS TO BE COMING ON!!! There’s Sabitzer/Fred EASILY cover up more ground!”
Another wrote: “I was happy with the starting lineup, except for no AWB and Martial, but not much Ten Hag can do about that. But now this game is SCREAMING for Fred to make some chaos.”
A fellow Red Devil said: “Ten hag needs to get fred on McTominay and anyone for weghorst asap.”

Another tweeted: “We desperately need Fred.”

Spain international De Gea’s contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season.
United did have the option to extend the Spaniard’s stay by a further 12 months but opted not to.
The Red Devils brass, however, are eager to tie the 32-year-old down to a new deal.
SunSport revealed this week that United plan to restructure De Gea’s £250,000-a-week contract.
They plan to pay him a lower guaranteed wage but throw in extras if he makes enough appearances.
De Gea joined United in the summer of 2011 from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.
The keeper has racked up 525 appearances during his time with the Red Devils, in which he’s won the Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup and two League Cups.

Man Utd ‘hope to pinch Chelsea star Joao Felix in summer transfer steal with no buy clause in Blues loan deal’

MANCHESTER UNITED hope to steal Joao Felix away from Chelsea in the summer. The striker joined the Blues on loan in January but it is believed they are seeking a permanent move.

However Chelsea did not include a clause in the deal to make the move permanent, so other clubs can make an approach.
United have been linked to Felix for some time and are monitoring his current situation, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Erik ten Hag is reportedly prioritising a move for a striker when the summer transfer window re-opens.
And it is believed Felix could be available for £88million, though the Red Devils are hopeful of a more “favourable deal”.

However the Portugal international reportedly wants to stay at Chelsea, though he refused to be drawn in to speculation about his future.
Felix, 23, told the LondonBluePod: “For now I’m on loan at Chelsea, so I don’t know the future yet, but I’m here and I see that it’s a big club with a big project.
“I know that Chelsea is a great European team, I feel it and I can see it.”
It is possible Felix could stay at Atletico, with club captain Koke ready to welcome him back into the squad.

Leicester want Harry Maguire loan transfer as they look to bring in Man Utd ace to shore up shambolic defence

HARRY MAGUIRE  is wanted back ‘home’ at Leicester — with a loan move on the cards next season. The Manchester United centre-back faces limited game time in the run-in both at home and abroad after returning to Old Trafford from England duty.
Man Utd’s England defender Harry Maguire is being targeted by old club Leicester as well as other Premier League rivalsCredit: Getty
Now Brendan Rodgers is keen to take him back to the Foxes, where he was a massive hero.
Leicester will always be a lure for Maguire, 30, who left with the club’s blessing — with both sides making the exit one of the most dignified going.
Rodgers thinks he would be a huge capture and can sort out a defence that still leaks goals alarmingly  — the main reason they fear the drop.
The Leicester boss has looked at other targets like Odilon Kossounou at Bayer Leverkusen but an eye-catching loan for the United star would top that.

Maguire has also been linked with top-six clubs and there could be bids for the defender in the next window.
However, a loan deal may work for all parties, although United would look for a full salary to ease any financial pain for them.
Maguire will need to be playing at the best level he can next season in the build-up to  Euro 2024 for England.
He played two full games as the Three Lions launched their qualifying campaign last week with a 2-1 win in Italy and 2-0 Wembley success over Ukraine.

And Maguire has also defended his club form – having not lost a match he’s started a 1-0 home loss to Real Sociedad in the Europa League on September 8.
He said: “Obviously this season, I haven’t played as much as I’d like but, for my club, I feel like my form’s been good this year.
“I know people obviously look at me not playing but when I’ve played I think in my last eight or nine starts for Manchester United we have won.
“I can’t remember losing a game for Manchester United, it must be the third week of the season. So my influence is still there.” More

Erik ten Hag set for bumper £12m new deal REGARDLESS of who owner is, with Dutchman set to stay at Man Utd until 2028

Ten Hag, 53, would also get a £3m-a-year pay hike – and the uncertainty over United’s ownership will NOT affect the offer.
He has indicated that he is keen on the three-year extension to the deal he signed when he arrived from Ajax last summer.
United appointed him on a shorter term contract than previous managers, after having their fingers burned in the past with hefty pay-offs.
Yet Ten Hag has created a huge impression in just over half a season.

Sir Alex Ferguson is also said to be a huge admirer.
He has already established United in the top four and won the Carabao Cup.
