It’s testament to the utter shambles in 10 years since Fergie’s exit that this will be a season of progress for Man Utd

TEN years on from the announcement of Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, the state of play with Manchester United’s squad is as follows:An under-performing goalkeeper, who is costing goals and can’t play confidently with his feet.
So far Man Utd have come nowhere near replicating the glorious reign of Sir Alex Ferguson from 1986-2013Credit: PA
Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge could yet be the best post-Fergie campaign for the Red Devils amid a battle to take over the clubCredit: Getty
An £85million club captain who is currently fifth-choice centre-half.
An over-priced £85.5m one-footed, one-trick pony and another winger who cost £73m and cannot get a regular place in an average team.
The midfield lacks dynamism, the full-backs lack attacking threat, the entire team lacks goals and the ability to win away from home.
And even the defining masterstroke of Erik ten Hag’s first season — fumigating the dressing-room by bombing out Cristiano Ronaldo — basically boils down to this: He has replaced one of the greatest footballers of all time with Wout Weghorst.

It is a testament to the utter shambles of the last decade that this will still be a season of progress for England’s most famous football club.
If United stagger over the line into fourth place ahead of a sprinting Liverpool and, in the far less likely event that they complete a Cup double by defeating Manchester City in the FA Cup final, it might even be the club’s best post-Ferguson season.
Yet still we could stage a fascinating debate over the most shambolic defeat of their campaign — the historic 7-0 hiding at Anfield, the 6-3 evisceration by City, the 4-0 first-half collapse at Brentford.
Or the tossing away of a two-goal lead to lose 5-2 on aggregate to the weakest Sevilla team in years to exit the Europa League.

Which shows how staggeringly far the mighty have fallen, how United continue to suffer from ten years of dismal player recruitment and how desperately they need the wretched Glazers to get out of the club ASAP.
Ten Hag got lucky at West Ham on Sunday, where a 1-0 defeat  flattered them.
He might easily have suffered a serious trouncing at the hands of the old ‘Chosen One’ David Moyes and added another entry to that list of complete humiliations.
The Hammers should have had a penalty for handball.
And after he disastrously conceded Said Benrahma’s pea-roller, David de Gea was lucky that a Michail Antonio effort was disallowed when the Spaniard was feeble in dealing with a cross.
De Gea is out of contract this summer and if Ten Hag is serious about wanting to keep him, then the Dutchman presumably feels he is simply too short of long-serving senior pros, with the petulant Bruno Fernandes already a clearly unsuitable on-field captain.
Although he already has too many struggling high-profile players to know what to do with — Harry Maguire, Antony and Jadon Sancho among them.
United haven’t seriously challenged for either the Premier League or Champions League since Ferguson left and they do not look like doing so any time soon.
Their only hope is a successful takeover and yet even that public auction has been an embarrassing muddle.
There is no guarantee of any resolution, and even if there is, the Glazers may linger like a bad smell under Jim Ratcliffe.
There are big question marks over the futures of Harry Maguire and David de GeaCredit: Richard Pelham / The Sun
Or there will be serious questions asked about Sheikh Jassim, the Qatari royal who is absolutely not funded by the Qatari state which has made such a celebrity circus out of Paris Saint-Germain…
Ten Hag is a good coach — probably the most suitable of all United’s six post-Ferguson bosses.
Had it not been for injuries to centre-backs Lisandro Martinez, perhaps United’s best post- Ferguson signing, and Raphael Varane, United would surely have held off Liverpool with some comfort.
Their home form remains pretty solid and three of their remaining four fixtures are Wolves, Chelsea and Fulham at Old Trafford.
United should be back in the Champions League, they might still end up parading two Cups, welcoming new owners and capturing Harry Kane this summer.
And still you can’t imagine them challenging City any time soon.
    PEP’S POSER
PEP GUARDIOLA was fuming that Erling Haaland didn’t take Manchester City’s late penalty against Leeds — instead leaving it to Ilkay Gundogan.
He missed his hat-trick attempt before Sam Allardyce’s side made it 2-1 to set up an unnecessarily nervy finale.
When Haaland ceded spot-kick duties to Riyad Mahrez in the FA Cup semi-final against Sheffield  United a fortnight earlier, Guardiola claimed he’d left it up to the players to decide.
Firstly, Guardiola must sort out this weird oversight before the greatest test of City’s Treble bid against Real Madrid in the Bernabeu tonight.
Secondly, imagine how many goals Haaland might score if he was actually ruthless.
    BARRACK ‘N FORTH
AT St James’ Park, seated directly behind the dugouts, you can appreciate the extent of the earache handed out to fourth officials.
On Sunday, Anthony Taylor spent the vast majority of the 90 minutes being harangued by Newcastle assistant  Jason Tindall (the chief irritant), Eddie Howe, Mikel Arteta and his No 2 Steve Round.
And for what? Do these men believe that Taylor will say: “I didn’t make that decision.
I have no authority to overturn that decision. But, as you’ve moaned so much, I’m going to overturn it anyway.”
    MUST PICK FIK
FIKAYO TOMORI is heading into a Champions League semi-final with AC Milan against city rivals Inter, aiming to join a select band of Englishmen to  contest a European Cup final with a foreign club.
Only Kevin Keegan, Laurie Cunningham, Chris Waddle, Steve McManaman and Owen Hargreaves have achieved this before, and nobody for more than 20 years.
Given the paucity of decent English centre-backs, the absence of Tomori from Gareth Southgate’s squad is looking weird.
    EUROPE’S NO SPUR
TOTTENHAM’S mini-revival under caretaker-caretaker-boss Ryan Mason might well earn them seventh place in the Premier League and a spot in the Europa Conference League.
While West Ham have embraced that third-tier competition — as would Brighton, Aston Villa and other clubs — Spurs will, with some justification, consider it beneath them.
The next permanent boss might wish Spurs had stuck with the last caretaker, Cristian Stellini, trashed the rest of this season and missed out on Europe altogether.
    CAUSING A STER
FOR a stretch of time, Raheem Sterling was frequently booed by England fans while playing for his country.
Yet he ended up as Gareth Southgate’s best player when the Three Lions reached their first major final in 55 years at the last Euros, in 2021.

Chelsea fans are now booing Sterling but, under Mauricio Pochettino next season, he is well capable of changing minds at  Stamford Bridge.
If ever there was a player who thrives on being under-appreciated, it is Sterling. More

Man Utd ‘line up Napoli star with Ten Hag ready to pay £13m MORE than release clause to secure transfer’

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly set to offer £13million MORE than Kim Min-Jae’s release clause in order to land one of Napoli’s Serie A heroes. Napoli blew their competition out of the water to win the Italian league with five games to spare.

And now Erik ten Hag wants to bring in some of that title-winning flair by recruiting Napoli star defender Kim.
According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, the 26-year-old has a £40m release clause which foreign clubs can trigger this summer.
However, in an effort to ensure they land the South Korean United are said to be willing to pay £53m, an excess of £13m more than needed.
United reportedly feel this will convince Napoli to sell to them rather than rivals.

Long-term injuries to Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane ahead of the season run-in have highlighted United’s lack of quality at centre-back.
Luke Shaw has been forced to fill in as an auxiliary CB as opposed to his usual left-back role.
Club captain Harry Maguire could be on his way out in the summer as Ten Hag seeks to improve his options in a bid to return United to the summit of the English game.
South Korean Kim has appeared in 33 games this season, scoring twice.

Kim’s influence has been widespread with him helping to marshall the meanest defence in Italy’s top tier – 17 clean sheets with just 23 goals conceded – following his transfer from Fenerbache last summer.

Man Utd fans call for Amad Diallo to start instead of Antony and Sancho as star scores worldie for Sunderland

FANS want Amad Diallo to replace Antony and Jadon Sancho at Manchester United after a worldie for loan club Sunderland. The Ivorian winger helped the Black Cats sneak the final Championship play-off spot with a 25-yard opener in the 3-0 win at Preston.

Many United supporters believe it shows the 20-year-old has progressed enough to be a starter when he returns to Old Trafford for next season.
Brazilian Antony and Englishman Sancho, both 23, have produced occasional magical moments rather than sustained consistency for Erik ten Hag’s men.
And one fan said of Diallo, “Sell Sancho, bring in this kid” while another posted: “45x better than Antony”.
A third wrote: “This loan deal to the Championship could be the best thing in his career, we’ll find out next season.”

Sunderland and Diallo have improved together over the campaign.
The Black Cats nicked sixth place on Monday, ahead of Blackburn on goal difference.
Millwall dropped a point below and out of the play-off zone after losing 4-3 at home to Rovers.
And Red Devils’ supporters were impressed by the way Diallo sparked a decisive three-goal burst for Sunderland early in the second period.

Man Utd in transfer raid on Gary Neville’s Salford as they take winger Kelly N’Mai, 19, on trial

And the 19-year-old, who has appeared 11 times for the League Two outfit, was given a run out for Utd U21’s last Friday in a 2-2 draw against Leicester City.
Teenager N’Mai previously had a trial with Manchester City before he was snapped up by the Ammies in 2020.
The Netherlands-born wideman committed his future to Salford by signing a new deal with the club in 2021.
However, Salford won’t stand in his way if United decide to add him to their development squad.

Erik ten Hag’s side would have to pay a compensation fee to sign him, should they wish to make the move permanent.
Meanwhile, Neville led the celebrations after Salford scraped into the League Two play-offs.
But they were made to sweat after they were beaten 1-0 at home by Gillingham this afternoon.
Goal difference proved to be the decisive factor – with both Salford and Mansfield Town finishing their campaign on 75 points.

The Stags managed a 2-0 win away at Colchester – which put their goal difference up to +17.

Harry Kane drops big hint over Tottenham future as Man Utd transfer target eyes chance to finally end trophy drought

HARRY was a problem for the Palace yet again on Saturday. But after the Premier League’s now second-highest scorer netted his 11th goal against the Eagles to win this tight game, he spoke like a man not looking to cause his own club a headache by pushing for a summer move.
Harry Kane scored the winner as Tottenham beat Crystal Palace on SaturdayCredit: Alamy
Instead Kane was more concerned by the importance of Tottenham ensuring they qualify for Europe — whatever the competition — this season to boost their trophy prospects.
And he even talked of the possibility of sitting down with Daniel Levy before the campaign is out over the chairman’s plans for a permanent successor to former boss Antonio Conte.
Cynics will argue what else would you expect of England’s greatest goal-getter, a model pro who holds all the power, with 13 months to go on his contract and Manchester United circling.
That may be the case but the feeling from within Spurs is that a summer sale is unlikely, with a free transfer a year later more palatable.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
We will see how the close-season pans out — and if Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils, or any other super club, really do test Levy’s famous resolve.
Yet Kane’s focus is clearly unaffected by talk of any potential move, unlike the season before last where he netted just once in the first half of the campaign after seeing a dream switch to Manchester City fall flat.
He was the difference here in what was an even contest, showing all his skills as the perfect hybrid of No 9 and No 10 by creating and scoring the winner in first-half stoppage time.
Kane found the excellent Pedro Porro out wide with a clever pass before racing to the far post to nod  the Portuguese’s pinpoint cross  into the Eagles’ net.

Kane’s header was his 26th goal of the seasonCredit: Alamy
The goal was his 26th in the Prem this season and his 209th overall, moving him past Wayne Rooney into second on the all-time lists.
It also saw him break Duncan Ferguson’s 25-year record of most headed goals in a Premier League season, setting the new bar at ten.
And it kept Spurs in the hunt for Europe, even if the Europa Conference League may be the best they can hope for if Brighton capitalise on their three games in hand.
Kane, who turns 30 in July, said: “If we can come away from this season with European football, that’s a small prize at the end of a tough season.
“We’ll be fighting for that and fighting in the three games left to try to pick up three wins.”
Some Spurs fans would prefer not to finish in Europe at all, seeing the third-tier competition of the Conference League as a bit of a booby prize.
Yet Kane, who has famously never won a trophy, retorted: “You can’t disrespect any competition that you play in.
“It’s one of those, if you end up in the Conference League and win it, it’s worth it. If you don’t, then people probably look at it as an inconvenience. But when you’ve been at a club where we haven’t won a trophy for 15 years, if we do end up in it, it could be an opportunity to try and put that to bed.”
Spurs had shipped a whopping 12 goals in their last three games against Newcastle, Manchester United and Liverpool but picked up a first clean sheet since February 26 here.
That was in large part due to the solid tactics of interim boss Ryan Mason, who reverted to a 4-4-2 out of possession and the familiar 3-4-3 with the ball.
Kane talked ahead of last week’s 4-3 thrilling defeat to Liverpool how he felt the club had lost some of its values.
When asked if he backed Mason for the job full-time, he pointed to how he felt the caretaker boss was bringing some of those values back.
Kane said: “We’re all behind him. We know the club is in a situation where I spoke about getting some of the values back. I feel like Ryan brings all those attributes.
“He’s been here through the academy, he knows what it’s like as a fan, he knows what it’s like to play here.”

The likes of Julian Nagelsmann, Xabi Alonso and Feyenoord chief Arne Slot are all under consideration to replace Conte, who exited in March.
Asked if he has been enthused by what he has read about the manager search, Kane replied: “That’s down to the club. If I end up speaking with the chairman towards the end of the season, then I’m sure he’ll fill me in on what he’s thinking.”

But the midfielder refused to make the move and Erik ten Hag instead signed Casemiro from Real Madrid.
However, the Red Devils boss is still said to be keen on De Jong, who is facing an uncertain future at the Nou Camp.
Barcelona want the 26-year-old to agree to a salary reduction amid their financial problems, according to Mundo Deportivo.
De Jong could extend his contract, which expires in 2026, for another two or three years.

The LaLiga leaders are desperate to re-sign Lionel Messi, whose time at Paris Saint-Germain appears to be approaching an end.
