However, they are still celebrating after securing a sixth-place finish and Europa League football next term.
Midfield duo Mac Allister, 24, and Caicedo, 21, have both played a key role in that success and have a host of top clubs chasing their services.
And their manager is resigned to losing the pair of them once the transfer window re-opens.
Speaking after the Villa loss, De Zerbi said: “I think it can be the last game of Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo.

“I think it is right they can leave, change team and play at a higher level.”
Mac Allister was spotted in tears after the defeat at Villa after seemingly playing his final game for the club.
He has been linked with an array of top clubs following his superb World Cup winning exploits with Argentina.
The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to Liverpool for a long time and is said to be very close to completing his transfer to Merseyside.

Chelsea have also been reported as interested in the midfielder, but may struggle to attract him without European football while Man City have allegedly joined the chase to sign him.
Mac Allister has scored 10 goals and assisted a further two in the league this season and will likely command a huge fee if he does leave Brighton, with his contract not due to expire until 2025.
Ecuadorian Caicedo helped the Seagulls secure Europa League football on Wednesday evening after a 1-1 draw with Manchester City.
He had been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal in the January transfer window, but Brighton clung on to their man.
He then penned a new deal to keep him on the South Coast until 2027. But he is still expected to leave Brighton at the end of the season as both Chelsea and Arsenal circle for his signature.

Man Utd fans say ‘the end is near’ as De Gea SAVES a penalty from Mitrovic in potential last game

MANCHESTER UNITED fans were left in complete disbelief after David de Gea finally saved a penalty. The Spanish stopper had supporters fearing “the end is near” after he denied Aleksandar Mitrovic from the spot at Old Trafford against Fulham.

United were already trailing Fulham after Kenny Tete’s near-post header from Willian’s corner.
However, just moments later the 32-year-old prevented the Red Devils from falling two behind after Casemiro was punished for a foul in the box.
Mitrovic stepped up but De Gea guessed the correct way and produced a brilliant stop as the Stretford End roared its approval.
It proved to be a vital contribution from De Gea, who afterwards picked up the Golden Glove an award for keeping the most clean sheets this season (16), as United went on to win 2-1.

And that, incredibly, was his first penalty save at Old Trafford since he denied Leighton Baines in October 2014.
De Gea has faced heavy criticism for his penalty saving record over recent times – with supporters stunned last month that they beat Brighton in the FA Cup semi-final via a shootout despite him failing to stop a single one.
And he was heavily mocked after the 2021 Europa League final defeat to Villarreal where he conceded 11 penalties before missing United’s crucial one himself.
However, he did save two in the Premier League last season, firstly from West Ham’s Mark Noble in September 2021 before denying Ismaila Sarr at Watford two months later.

But despite that, the United faithful still appeared to be in shock to witness him produce a save – especially at the Theatre of Dreams.
One tweeted: “Did I just see De Gea save a penalty????”
Another wrote: “De Gea Penalty save? We’re winning the league next season.”
Meanwhile, De Gea has so far failed to sign a new deal at United, which would see his present £375,000-a-week basic salary drop by nearly 50 per cent.
He is out of contract next summer and wants to stay at Old Trafford but so far talks over fresh terms have stalled.
United boss Erik ten Hag has given his public backing to the Spaniard, although it is understood concerns remain from the player’s camp that he may not be No.1 next season.
And some even think that this penalty save was the perfect way for him to sign off at the club before a summer exit.
One fan wrote: “DE GEA OMFG WHAT A FAREWELL PENALTY SAVE.”
As another added: “Farewell penalty save for De Gea.”

Ten Hag gives Rashford outrageous goal target for next year as Man Utd look to step up transfer talks for Harry Kane

ERIK TEN HAG has set Marcus Rashford a 40-goal target for next season at Manchester United. The 25-year-old has become the first Red Devils star to find the net 30 times in a campaign since Robin van Persie achieved that feat a decade ago.

However, his manager has instantly challenged him to not only repeat that feat but produce even more next term despite ramping up efforts to sign Tottenham striker Harry Kane.
United are desperate for a new No.9, and The Telegraph claims that they are “expected to step up their pursuit” of the England captain this summer.
But even if they land Spurs’ all-time record scorer, who reached 30 top-flight goals for the campaign on the final day win at Leeds, Ten Hag still thinks Rashford can be even more prolific.
He said: “I think yes. There’s a lot of room for improvement in his game.

“I am convinced he can score even more. When you take, for instance, the last ten games he didn’t score many goals. I think only two or three, so yes he can improve.
“I am happy from what he did last season to now that he brings himself back. We supported him where we could, with the way we play but also in his mental mindset.
“We are happy with that, but we must push him more. I think he’s capable of scoring 40 goals in a season. So for him that’s the next step.”
Even though Rashford has enjoyed a stunning campaign in front of goal, Ten Hag admitted that he still wants to add more firepower to his frontline.

Wayne Rooney urges Man Utd to ‘cheat a bit’ and play McFred in ‘90s line-up’ as fans say ‘lucky he’s not our coach’

WAYNE ROONEY raised eyebrows after calling for Manchester United to play a throwback 4-4-2 formation in the FA Cup final. United play bitter rivals City next Saturday at Wembley, looking for their second trophy of the season.

And DC United boss Rooney revealed he would play with a four-man midfield to “cheat a bit”.
He wrote in his column for The Times: “My strategy would be to go the other way and ask City to do something different.
“I’d try something similar to a tactic José Mourinho sometimes deployed in his first spell at Chelsea, where he would get the likes of Joe Cole, Arjen Robben and Damien Duff to take up “half” positions where they didn’t come all the way back and defend when Chelsea were out of possession but instead cheat a bit and wait higher up the pitch in areas from which they could counterattack as soon as Chelsea won the ball back.
“We always found it difficult to play against. When you were attacking, you were thinking, ‘Where’s Robben? Where’s Cole? Who’s staying back? What’s the communication like to make sure we’re dealing with those players?’
    READ MORE IN BOXING
“United could do similar using Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial: defend with eight players and have those two waiting in counterattack positions.
“That would ask City different questions: should John Stones still come into the midfield or would it leave that side of the pitch open for Rashford to run into? Should Kyle Walker go high or would this open up space?”
“I would set United up 4-4-2, with Martial and Rashford up top and a very solid midfield behind them: Casemiro in the middle with Christian Eriksen, or even Scott McTominay, and Bruno Fernandes and Fred either side.
” I’d want to keep the distances between my eight defending players small.

“Everyone in football knows that if you get a good block of eight players, do it well and keep your discipline, it’s very difficult to break you down. United have had a few successes against City in recent years playing on the counterattack — often with Rashford and Martial to the fore.
“Playing my way carries risks but I feel you have to risk it against City and ask questions that force them to do something different.
“Gamble and they may punish you but if you just sit back you’re going to get punished by them anyway — so why not take the initiative and try something?”
Rooney’s old-school approach had United fans thanking that he is not in charge at Old Trafford.
One said: “We are lucky that he is not our coach.”
Another added: “442 this ain’t the 90s man.”

Diallo, meanwhile, built up a strong rapport with Black Cats’ fans.
And after their exit against overall play-off winners Luton, the Ivory Coast ace posted a message for them, saying “one day we will meet again”.

But he flopped after moving to Old Trafford, heading off to Inter Milan, first on loan and then permanently.

It’s been claimed in Chile that the Gunners are considering an offer.

But many were angry at his departure to big rivals United for around £391,000 a week plus bonuses.
Sanchez has revealed he was instead poised to join Manchester City.
But an Etihad player set to switch the other way to the Emirates declined the move.
Sanchez has previously said: “Everything was ready, there was a player who was going to go to Arsenal.
“Then [Arsene] Wenger tells me you are not leaving because the other player did not want to come and they do not have another.

Ex-France hero believes he got it wrong in joining Chelsea from BarcaCredit: Getty
Petit moved to Chelsea despite two calls from Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger urging him to return to Arsenal.
The midfielder blames his decision on his then-wife wanting to live in London and not Manchester.
And having picked up no silverware in his one season with Barca, he had equally-mixed fortunes at Chelsea before retiring in 2004.
Petit famously helped Arsenal win the Premier League and FA Cup double in 1997-98 then moved to the Nou Camp in 2000.

And he explained how a year later he was once more a wanted man in England.
Petit, 52, told FourFourTwo. “Arsenal approached me but so did Manchester United.
“I spoke to Arsene. He really wanted me back, but I was honest with him.

“It’s like divorcing somebody. When you don’t feel desired by them, what’s the point of going back?
“I should have gone to Manchester United, because Sir Alex Ferguson called me twice.
“We had a very good conversation and it was tempting, but once again I listened to my wife.
“She wanted to go back to London – she didn’t want to live in Manchester – so I made the same mistake twice in one year.”

Man Utd ‘some way off’ Mason Mount transfer agreement as Red Devils refuse to meet Chelsea’s sky-high valuation

But according to the Independent, the Blues are demanding a staggering £55million for the academy graduate.
And the report insists the Old Trafford side are not even close to matching that sky-high valuation – especially amid uncertainty over the club’s ownership and transfer budget.
Erik ten Hag is prioritising a new striker and a centre-back when the transfer window reopens.
Liverpool and Arsenal have also shown interest in Mount.

But it is understood the 36-cap England ace would favour a move to United, where he would link up with a host of Three Lions team-mates.
And the report adds that if a transfer fee can be agreed on with Chelsea, United would be in pole position and expected to complete the signing of Mount.
That could even see the former Derby loanee link up with best pal Declan Rice again, although the West Ham captain is more likely to join Arsenal.
Mount has refused any new contract offers put on the table by Chelsea.

Frank Lampard dismissed talk of the star’s future and said: “That’s not my answer to make. That’s between Mason and the club.”
