Man Utd are ‘trying to manage Harry Maguire out of the club’ after Erik ten Hag’s surprising substitution, says Neville

Maguire started United’s season opener against Wolves on the bench and was further snubbed by his manager when Victor Lindelof was brought on at half time to replace the booked Lisandro Martinez.
When asked if the booking prompted Ten Hag to sub Martinez, former Red Devil and Sky Sports pundit Neville said: “One hundred per cent.
“Martinez tonight looks a little rash in his performance. I think he’s one away from being booked.”
Neville, 48, then said: “They’re trying to manage Harry Maguire out of the club and get their money for him there is no doubt about that.”

Maguire, 30, was on course to finalise his move to West Ham last week after the Hammers agreed a £30million deal for the England international.
The exit was made even more imminent after United agreed to give the defender a £6m pay-off.
But the deal is hanging on a knife edge after Maguire demanded his pay-off package be upped.
SunSport exclusively revealed the centre-back is now demanding the Red Devils brass give him a cool £15m for him to leave The Theatre of Dreams.

Maguire’s sensational demand came after Ten Hag challenged him to fight for his place in the starting XI.
The former Ajax boss said: “He has the ability to be a top-class centre-back.
“He is the best for England so why shouldn’t he be the best for us?
“But he has to prove it. When he is not confident enough to fight then he has to go, then he has to make a decision.
    “But I’m happy with him.”
United ran out 1-0 winners over Wolves thanks to a second-half header from Raphael Varane.
Ten Hag’s troops will be back in action on Saturday evening, travelling to North London to take on Tottenham. More

Wolves boss rages as Onana gets away with WILD injury-time challenge… as even Man Utd legend Neville admits it’s a pen

FURIOUS Gary O’Neil slammed VAR Michael Salisbury after Wolves were robbed of an injury-time penalty.Debutant Manchester United  keeper Andre Onana clattered into Sasa Kalajdzic in the box.

But Salisbury chose not to tell ref Simon Hooper to review the pitchside monitor, leaving O’Neil in a rage.
O’Neil, who was booked for protesting, fumed: “The keeper almost took our centre-forward’s head off.
“But I am not overly surprised we didn’t get it.
“I thought  it was a penalty live and again when I watched the replay.

“If you clatter into an attacker that hard it has to be a foul.
    “I am really, really surprised.”
It’s not the first time Salisbury has been at the centre of a hugely controversial VAR call.
He was AXED from Prem duties last season after his VAR cock-up in Brighton’s 2-1 defeat to Spurs – when he failed to recommend a penalty to the Seagulls – prompted an apology from refs’ chief Howard Webb.

O’Neil added: “It’s a real difficult decision for the on-field refs, so we can’t just leave it to them because they say no.
“I am disappointed we are going home with nothing and then my booking at the end for claiming a penalty.
“I have spoken to the officials about it already.
“If we are all saying it should have been a penalty then he need to have a look.”
United legend Gary Neville insisted Wolves were robbed.
He declared: “It was a penalty was because Onana was nowhere near the ball.
“He was never getting there so he could’ve made a decision before he jumped.”
Wolves  star Matheus Cunha added:  “Upset is the word. It was a penalty.”

And fans were left stunned, calling the decision a “robbery”.
One said: “Yes, that should be a stonewall penalty after Onana punched Kalajdzic and completely missed the ball!”
Another added: “Genuinely what is the point of VAR? One of the most blatant penalties you will ever see….not given.”
One agreed: “Wolves have been absolutely robbed of a penalty there, disgraceful.”
Another fumed: “How is that not a penalty, Onana has taken out Sasa Kalajdzic.

“If an outfield player does that I’ve no doubt it’s a penalty, think that’s another example of just how protected goalkeepers are.
“Manchester United extremely fortunate to escape that. That is a baffling decision.”
It meant Raphael Varane’s second-half winner was enough to separate the sides.
And Gary Lineker couldn’t resist a cheeky pun, tweeting: “An opening day 3 points for @ManUtd thanks to VARane.”
United boss Erik ten Hag was relieved the penalty claim went in his favour.
The Dutchman said: “The VAR looked at the incident and it went on our side so we are happy with the points.
“Andre was really brave to come out and I don’t think he had an influence on the touch from the opponent.”

United won last night’s game at Old Trafford when French defender Varane nodded in Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s 76th-minute cross from close range.
But the visitors – under new boss O’Neil – managed 23 shots on target – the highest from an away team in a Prem match at Old Trafford since Chelsea’s 25 in November, 2005.
O’Neil added: “To come to Old Trafford and have the most shots of any side since 2005 and dominate after just four days of work is exceptional.
    “The lads deserved more tonight.”

United captain Bruno Fernandes said: “Sometimes you have to find a way to win.”
And match-winner Varane added: “We are very happy. It was a tough game against a very good team. It’s a good start to the season, three points, clean sheet.”

Man Utd ratings: Onana shines on debut, Wan-Bissaka proves his worth but Mount won’t be exciting Red Devils fans

MANCHESTER UNITED’s season is up and running thanks to a narrow win over Wolves. Erik ten Hag’s troops kicked off their Premier League campaign on Monday night with a nervy home win against last season’s relegation battlers.

Andre Onana and Mason Mount made their competitive debuts for the Red Devils.
But United were FAR from convincing in a very underwhelming performance.
Here, SunSport’s Chisanga Malata rates how United got on in their clash against Gary O’Neil’s side.
    Andre Onana – 7/10
Had little to do in the first half but marshalled his defence well during set pieces.

The Cameroonian – who made a decent save early in the second half – seems to be a real commanding figure between the sticks.
Stopped United from falling behind in the 71st minute with a routine save from point-blank range and kept a clean sheet with a big save in the 82nd as Wolves had 23 shots on goal.
Almost undid all his good work in stoppage time when he flew out of his box and clattered into Sasa Kalajdzic for what looked to be a stonewall penalty.

    Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7/10
Continued his resurgence under Ten Hag with solid and robust defending.

Didn’t offer as much of an attacking threat as he would’ve liked in the first half.
But provided the all-important assist for Varane to nod home.
    Lisandro Martinez – 5/10
Found himself in the book in the first half for a reckless challenge on Pedro Neto.
That moment of madness led to Ten Hag hauling him off at half time.
    Raphael Varane – 7/10
Marshalled the defence well as Wolves often ran straight through United’s back four.
Got on the end of a cross from Wan Bissaka in the 76th minute to nod home the winner.

    Luke Shaw – 5/10
Defended well when called upon but didn’t offer enough of a threat going forward. Picked up a booking.
    Bruno Fernandes – 6/10
Pulled the strings from the get-go but let himself down with his final ball.
Ten Hag will be demanding more from his skipper going forward.
    Casemiro – 5/10
Lost several battles in the middle of the park in the first half and failed to shore things up in the second.
Allowed Wolves’ centre mids free runs at the back four on multiple occasions.

    Alejandro Garnacho – 5/10
Was lively throughout the first half but offered very little in terms of a threat.
Frustrated fans and his team-mates with his lack of end product.
    Mason Mount – 4/10
Was anonymous for large portions of the first half and struggled to make any sort of an impact in the second.
Was hooked with just over 20 minutes of the match remaining.
    Antony – 5/10
Was a threat going forward in the first half but his end product, as it so often did last season, let him down.
    Marcus Rashford – 5/10
Spurned a good opportunity to put the hosts in front just before the 11th minute, although the angle was against him.
Was the victim of a lack of service from his team-mates but should’ve buried a free header moments before the half ended.

The Old Trafford legend said on Sky Sports: “It’s driven me crazy a bit.”
And he went on to add: “Last season when Manchester United needed a goal at home, Luke Shaw was one of the best I think probably attacking players for United.

Others sang protest chants outside Old Trafford in the run-up to the start of United’s season.

The 21-year-old striker could return to the team after charges against him of assault, attempted rape and coercive behaviour were dropped earlier this year.
Greenwood has not played for United since he was arrested in January last year.
Before the curtain-raiser against Wolves, a group called Female Fans Against Mason Greenwood’s Return called on United to never let him play again.
It said: “We are calling on the club to do the right thing.

“This decision is a reflection of you, your morals; of who you are as individuals, and as humans.

“We female fans of Man United are demanding that the club abide by their duty of care towards their female fans and employees.
“Demonstrate a zero tolerance approach towards acts of violence against women by refusing to bring Mason Greenwood back into the squad.”
The Crown Prosecution Service dropped the case against Greenwood in February after “key witnesses” pulled out.

The Sun exclusively revealed that top-level discussions about a possible return to Old Trafford are nearly concluded, while Greenwood has the backing of his teammates and manager Erik ten Hag.

De Gea, 32, is understood to be on the radar of several Saudi Pro League clubs – although reports in Germany suggest he could end up in Bavaria.
Sport claim the German champions are locked in talks with the Spain international over a free transfer to the Allianz Arena.
But they claim there is a major stumbling block in the deal.
De Gea’s wage demands are said to be too high for the Bundesliga big boys.

The Spaniard was Manchester United’s top earner before leaving the Theatre of Dreams earlier this summer – taking home a whopping £375,000 a week.
Bayern are said to be exploring a number of options for a back-up keeper for Manuel Neuer, who is still recovering from his freak injury.

They had also offered Maguire a £6m payment to leave.
But the former captain is holding out for more than TWICE that with him facing a wage cut to move to The London Stadium.
Maguire would have to reduce his wages from £190,000 a week to £120,000 – which would come to a shortfall of £14.5m over a four-year contract.
He already has two years left of his current deal at Old Trafford which would be worth £19.7million.

So the 30-year-old England international, understandably, does not believe the £6m offer is enough.
He remains unhappy at his treatment at the hands of manager Erik ten Hag.
The Dutchman stripped him of the captaincy this summer and handed the armband permanently to Bruno Fernandes.
Maguire only started eight Premier League games under Ten Hag last season.

Yet ahead of the club’s opening game against Wolves, he has challenged the centre-back to fight for his place or go.

“He has the ability to be a top class centre back and he is the best for England.
“So why shouldn’t he be the best for us? But he has to prove it.
“When he is not confident enough to fight then he has to go, then he has to make a decision but I’m happy with him.”
Bayern Munich’s Benjamin Pavard is one of the top candidates to replace Maguire.
The French World Cup winner is desperate to move to United.
But Pavard will cost around £35m and Ten Hag will only make the move is Maguire is sold. More
