      And it is widely accepted they will need to improve their side if they are to compete with Pep Guardiola’s men.
      So who could they poach this summer to close the gap to their counterparts from the blue side of the city?
      Here are five names linked with moves to Old Trafford that could help them mount a serious push for the title.

      Man Utd’s highest-profile target is Tottenham striker Harry Kane – who is expected to set them back around £100million.
      Spurs’ talisman, 29, is preparing to enter the final 12 months of his contract and has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford.
      But the Red Devils face tough competition from Real Madrid who are keen to sign him as their replacement for Karim Benzema.

      Man Utd are leading the race to sign him and are desperate for a centre-back to replace Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof – both of whom are expected to leave in the coming weeks.

      Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella is attracting widespread interest from the Premier League.
      The 26-year-old Italy international is thought to be another option Ten Hag is keen on alongside Mason Mount and Declan Rice.
      But United are one of FOUR English sides interested in the technically supreme star, with Man City, Liverpool and Newcastle also keeping tabs on him.

      If both Maguire and Lindelof are to depart, Ten Hag will want another top quality central defender to back up Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, even if Min-jae also joins.
      United have held “positive talks” with Monaco defender Axel Disasi, 25, who can play at centre-half and right-back.
      He is expected to leave the Ligue 1 side after they missed out on a place in the Champions League.

      According to L’Equipe, they are close to signing Monaco’s Axel Disasi, who was previously linked with Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
      The move has seemingly come out of nowhere, with reports claiming that United have “no issue” in matching the French club’s asking price of around £44million.
      Disasi has made 129 appearances for Monaco, playing both centrally and at right-back.
      The 25-year-old has been capped three times by France and was part of their World Cup squad which lost to Argentina in the final in December.

      United manager Erik ten Hag is determined to bolster his defensive options, with Harry Maguire likely to leave the club.
      Club captain Maguire was the Red Devils’ record defensive signing when he joined from Leicester for 85m back in 2019.

      But has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham in recent days after his much-publicised form struggles.
      The Premier League giants have also been linked with Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae, which would cost them 43m in a release clause.

      Centre-back Victor Lindelof looked to be heading for the exit, but he impressed Ten Hag after stepping into the team towards the end of the season.
      However, the club are still open to offers for the Swedish international.
      Eric Bailly – who spent this season on loan at Marseille – is set to leave United in a permanent deal.
      Meanwhile, Axel Disasi has his heart set on the Premier League, with the Red Devils being his first choice.
      L’Equipe report that although the deal for Disasi is ‘close’, the two clubs have not actually commenced final negotiations.

      The two clubs are set to begin talks for a deal between £34million-£43m, which United are believed to be ready to match.
      Disasi has made 129 appearances for Monaco, playing both centrally and at right-back.
      And the French international could seek a move away after Monaco failed to qualify for European football next season.

      United captain Harry Maguire also faces an uncertain future, having fallen out of favour with manager Erik ten Hag.
      As revealed by SunSport, the centre-back could even be offered to Chelsea as part of a deal to sign contract rebel Mason Mount.
      United are hopeful of securing Mount but they are some distance away from agreeing a fee with Chelsea wanting around £70m.
      New Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino tried to sign Maguire when he was at Hull.

      But the offer from Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was not good enough, so the defender signed for Leicester instead.
      Equally, Chelsea do have a number of central defenders, and Kalidou Koulibaly and Trevoh Chalobah would have to be offloaded first.
      United, meanwhile, are desperate to sign Mount and look set to beat Liverpool in the race for the midfielder, whose contract talks with Chelsea stalled.

      The Guardian report that Van de Beek will likely be amongst those departures, with the 26-year-old exploring his options.
      His imminent exit will mark an end to a difficult three-year spell with the Red Devils.
      An underwhelming loan spell with Everton was followed by an injury-ravaged season last term.

      The final nail in the coffin is understood to be United’s plans to strengthen their midfield, as they continue talks for Mason Mount.
      Van de Beek has scored just twice in 60 appearances for United since arriving from Ajax for £35million in 2020.
      His poor form and injuries have seen him fail to play a full 90 minutes for the club since December 2021.
      The midfielder missed 48 matches through injury in the 2022/23 season, with most of those caused by a season-ending knee injury he suffered in January.

      Old Trafford chief Erik ten Hag admits Maguire has a “decision” to make after the 30-year-old started just eight Premier League games this season.
      Ten Hag accepts no player “would be happy with the situation”.

      Maguire’s United deal runs until 2025 with the option for an extra year and he’s previously pledged to fight for his place.
      But the Red Devils are closing on another world-class central defender in Napoli’s Kim Min-jae.
      New Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is tipped to bid for Maguire.
      And West Ham have been linked with the former Leicester hero since the January transfer window.

      Jamaal Lascelles is not part of Howe’s long-term plans and could be sold this summer as he enters the final year of his deal.

      And Kim, 26, will decide his future next month once back from completing military service back home.
      Dubbed ‘The Monster’, he has just lifted the Serie A title and was named the league’s best defender.
      But Kim is believed to want a Prem move following just one season in Italy after signing from Fenerbache last summer.
      The South Korean is also seen by Ten Hag as someone that can provide competition for Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

      Despite this, Greenwood has still not set foot on the pitch with the Red Devils launching their own investigation earlier this year.

      The outcome of this investigation will determine United’s next steps in tackling the issue.
      And although this process hasn’t yet been finalised, it has reportedly moved forward and a conclusion is getting closer, reports MEN.
      According to the outlet, a final decision on what action to take against the player will be made by club owners the Glazer family, in consultation with chief executive Richard Arnold.
      It comes as The Sun exclusively revealed in April that Greenwood has told pals he will never play for United again.

      Sky in Germany report that Elanga is in talks with RB Leipzig, who United could face in the Champions League, but that the discussions are not yet advanced.

      Other clubs have also enquired about the 21-year-old, who United are said to value at between £13million and £17million.
      Elanga has been with United for eight years but struggled during Ten Hag’s first season in Manchester.

      He made just seven starts as he failed to score a single goal in 26 appearances across all competitions.
      The forward’s lack of first-team opportunities had seen him linked with an exit in January but no deal materialised.
      Elanga is now expected to be one of a number of summer exits from Old Trafford.
