However, the free agent put pen to paper on a deal with Japanese outfit Vissel Kobe.
That is the club that Andres Iniesta, who scored the winner against the Dutch in 2010, has just left after five years to join Emirates Club in the UAE.
Mata, 35, was offered the big bucks in the Saudi Pro League this summer following his Galatasaray exit.
The playmaker helped the giants win the Turkish Super Lig in his only season at the club after leaving Old Trafford in 2022.

However, he turned down the chance to go to Saudi because he wanted to experience the Japanese culture and explore the nation.
And he will have the chance to do that after signing a deal with the J1 League club.
Mata – who has taken the rogue No64 jersey – said: “Thanks for the incredible welcome, Japan! I’m here! I’ve always been a big admirer of this country and its culture, and it’s time to enjoy it here in Kobe.
“Grateful to everyone that made it possible. I will try my best to try to win another league title, we are in the race!

“Thank you football for allowing me to live such amazing life experiences!”
Vissel Kobe are currently second in the table after 25 matches, one point behind Yokohama FM who have played an extra game.
Mata came through at Real Madrid but made his name at Valencia before joining Chelsea in 2011.
He won the FA Cup, Champions League and Europa League with the Blues before making the switch to Old Trafford in 2014.
After eight-and-a-half years, he left United with winner’s medals for the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League.
Mata played his part in Spain’s World Cup triumph in South Africa and when they defended the Euros in 2012, racking up 41 caps during the golden generation from 2009 to 2016. More

Man Utd ‘to be taken off market as Glazers now want £10billion’ but American owners already have new sale date in mind

MANCHESTER UNITED will be taken off the market, according to a new report. It’s claimed that the Glazers have failed to get close to their valuation of the club and intend to end the sale process.

The report, from the Daily Mail, comes after SunSport told you that bidder Sheikh Jassim was closing in on purchasing the Premier League side for £6billion.
The Qatari royal has been battling with British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe for months to buy the club.
Jassim’s team had been completing due diligence on the club with the end of the 18-year reign of the loathed Glazers appearing in sight.
However this new report will throw doubt on the entire sale process which started in November last year.

It’s claimed that the Glazers now want closer to £10BILLION to sell up.
The story alleges that the American owners will try and sell the club again in 2025.
It’s believed they think the financial environment in two years time will attract more bidders.
However, Manchester United legend Gary Neville is sceptical about the latest update, tweeting: “I don’t believe the Glazers not selling/doing anything story. They have to do something.

“They’ve run out of money and the financial situation is desperate. They need investment in.
“They’re also having a toxic impact on the club from the inside out.
“The negligence continues for now but I don’t think it can go on without some action on raising funds. Also who would come in as a minority alongside them with the damage it would do to their reputation.”
Manchester United fans will be furious at the prospect of the current owners sticking around.
Many supporters staged a sit-in protest at Old Trafford last week urging them to go.
It comes after years of protests at their ownership.
As and when the Glazers do eventually sell, they will make a healthy profit having lumbered United with massive debts when they completed their £800million takeover back in 2005.
The servicing of that debt has since cost United over £1bn.
And their last financial figures showed that the gross debt is £725m — the highest it has been since 2010.
Sheikh Jassim, if ultimately successful in purchasing Manchester United, would wipe that out to save on any further fees and not take any dividend payments from the club, like the Glazers did.

He also plans to upgrade both Old Trafford and the club’s Carrington training ground, while continuing the investment in the team.

United confirmed last month he would not play for the club again after a six-month internal investigation into rape and assault charges that were dropped.
Greenwood, 21, had been suspended by the Red Devils since his arrest in January 2022.
But the Old Trafford outfit remain heavily involved — and worked round the clock to create a bespoke care package ahead of his deadline day move to the Madrid-based club.
It includes an £8,000-a-month, six- bedroom city villa close to his new club’s training ground and access to a private translator 24/7.

Family and friends will be flown out regularly to keep him company. His dad, Andrew, 53, who oversaw his private training sessions as United decided his fate, is likely to move with him.
Greenwood has told pals that he is determined to repay the faith shown in him by scoring a glut of goals and has not given up on a Red Devils return.
A source said: “He’s going on loan but remains a United player.
“It means the club has an ongoing duty of care to him and they’ve pledged to help him make a success of his move to Spain.
    Most read in Football
“The villa is big enough for friends and family to visit. They will get the opportunity to travel to see him as much as they can.
“It’s important he has a solid support network around him. The last thing they want is Mason isolated.”
It is understood United will pay more than half of his £75,000-a-week wages while he is in Spain.
Another source said Greenwood is raring to go. They added: “He’s happy he’s got himself a club in LaLiga and can finally begin to put the last two years behind him.
“He wants to concentrate on football and becoming the best version of himself — on and off the field. He’s looking forward to playing against Barcelona and Real Madrid. He’s going to show everyone that he’s changed and that he’s matured. He knows it’ll be a long road but it starts here.”
In a statement Erik ten Hag’s club said the move would “enable Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from United”.
It vowed: “The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.”
Greenwood, who has one England cap, was suspended by United after his arrest for sexual violence.

He was later charged with attempted rape and sexual assault but the case against him was discontinued by prosecutors in February.
United said he would remain suspended on full pay while it conducted an internal investigation into his alleged behaviour.
The decision to part ways was announced after five months of intense discussions and a huge backlash against plans to bring him back into the fold.
In a statement the club said it did not believe Greenwood had committed the offences he was accused of and allegations did not give “the full picture”. But they admitted the striker had “made mistakes” and needed to take responsibility.
United added: “Throughout, we have taken into account the wishes of the alleged victim along with the club’s standards and values.”
They added “it has been mutually agreed” that Greenwood would find a new club.
But Old Trafford CEO Richard Arnold said United would continue to offer the player and his alleged victim support to help them “rebuild and move forward”.
Greenwood, who became a dad to a baby girl in July, admitted he needed to set a better example to become “a good father, a better person and to use my talents in a positive way on and off the pitch”.

La Liga club Getafe completed a last-minute loan deal for the striker
However, Greenwood then signed with Spain’s Getafe on loan just minutes before the transfer window closed.
Greenwood, who was tipped to be the next big thing by Sir Alex Ferguson, has not played competitive football since January last year.
He was arrested and charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, before the case was dropped by the CPS in February.
Greenwood had hoped for a return to United but was axed earlier this month following mounting pressure from fans.
Now Lazio have claimed that Manchester United are to blame for them missing out on Greenwood.
Lazio’s president, Claudio Lotito, claims he was keen to join the Serie A club but United did not sign the paperwork in time.
Lotito told La Lazio Siamo Noi: “I tried until the last minute”.
Greenwood “mutually agreed” to leave United on August 21 following backlash over his potential return to the squad after his arrest for attempted rape and sexual assault.

He was charged in October last year but all charges were dropped in February by the Crown Prosecution Service.
Greenwood has not kicked a ball for Utd since January 2022 when he was suspended and it was decided this month that it would be best for all if his future was away from Old Trafford.
Following Greenwood’s recent signing for Madrid-based club Getafe, United said in a statement: “Mason Greenwood has signed for La Liga side Getafe CF on a season-long loan, subject to international clearance.
“The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United.
“The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.”
Getafe announced the move with a video of fans wildly celebrating outside the club’s Coliseum Alfonso Perez stadium.
They began jumping and chanting when the deal was confirmed.

He kept Nike in his bio despite the sports giant dropping his sponsorship deal in February – but this has now also been removed.

He does however still follow the club on the app.
Greenwood was arrested on January 30 last year and suspended on full pay – pocketing £75,000-a-week – by Manchester United a short time later after videos and images were posted online.
