Man Utd player ratings: Jonny Evans’ ‘second debut’ ends in disaster as Eriksen’s assured display is in vain

MAN UTD were stunned by a late Arsenal show at the Emirates.Erik ten Hag’s men looked like they may hold out for a point despite the Gunners having the lion’s share of the play.

However, a few of the Dutchman’s late subs appeared questionable as Mikel Arteta’s men stole in to win it in stoppage time.
Having set up negatively, United conceded twice after the 90 minutes to leave with nothing – which was pretty much what they deserved.
Here is how the Red Devils rated.
    ANDRE ONANA – 7
Onana solidified his reputation as the anti-De Gea with another adventurous display with the ball at his feet.

The Cameroonian made a brilliant save from Saka to keep the Red Devils level but it was all ultimately in vain.
    AARON WAN-BISSAKA – 7
A typical Wan-Bissaka display. One of the best one-on-one defenders in the business but distribution not quite where it needs to be.
The right-back was rescued by VAR after a penalty decision that could have gone either way when Havertz went down in the box.
    VICTOR LINDELOF – 6
The Swede looked like Bambi on Ice under the bouncing ball in a game he won’t want to dwell on.

    LISANDRO MARTINEZ – 7
Didn’t put a foot wrong until just past the hour when he scythed down Nketiah to stop a counter-attack.
Picked up a booking, and what looks like an injury, in the process and was instantly subbed off.
    DIOGO DALOT – 7
Playing at makeshift left-back, Dalot could have easily gone under with the pressure Saka was applying in the first half.
However, he adapted well to the challenge and was relatively untroubled after the first half an hour.
    CASEMIRO – 5
Arsenal rushed the ex-Real Madrid star like a pack of hyenas as he showed worrying signs of being unable to keep up with the pace.
Completely switched off to allow Odegaard to cancel out Marcus Rashford’s goal straight from the kick-off.
On this evidence, Sofyan Amrabat can’t come into the side soon enough.
    CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN – 8
The cultured Danish midfielder was one of few star performers for Man Utd as he covered incredible ground to support the defence and attack.
Brilliant interception and masterful through ball to assist Rashford’s goal.
Christian Eriksen was one of the few bright sparks in an unambitious Man Utd performanceCredit: Reuters
    BRUNO FERNANDES – 6
As quiet a first 45 minutes as you’ll ever see from the Man Utd captain.
A bit more bite from the Portuguese star in the second half but one of his more forgettable overall displays.
    ANTONY – 6
The often-infuriating bleached blonde Brazilian put in far more defensive work than he gets credit for.
However it was hard to remember him completing a pass in the opposition half.
    MARCUS RASHFORD – 7
The England star took his goal brilliantly. However it would have been good to see him more involved in the general play.
Rashford also became a bit predictable in the opposition box as the game went on with his reluctance to do anything other than cut inside onto his right foot.
Things looked promising for Man Utd when Marcus Rashford gave them the leadCredit: AP
    ANTHONY MARTIAL – 5
The Frenchman was very lucky to see out the transfer window still a Man Utd player, and he put in another insipid display at the Emirates.
Anonymous in the first half before seeing a chance to put the Red Devils ahead in the second comfortably saved by Ramsdale.
    SUBS
RASMUS HOJLUND (on for Antony 66)
The £72m Dane certainly puts himself about more than Martial.
Very keen to play with his back to goal, which suggests he may be asked to play the ‘Weghorst’ role rather than being expected to be a go-to goalscorer himself.
HARRY MAGUIRE (on for Lisandro Martinez 66) – 6
The former Man Utd captain appeared so popular with the fans that they were belting out his name when he came on for Lisandro Martinez.
    The Arsenal fans, that is.
However, he wasn’t to blame for the defensive capitulation late on.
ALEJANDRO GARNACHO (on for Antony 84) – 7
Garnacho impressed off the bench once again.
He was half an inch away from giving Man Utd a late lead as VAR intervened to disallow his 87th minute goal for offside.

JONNY EVANS (on for Victor Lindelof 84) – 4
It’s very hard to understand what Ten Hag was thinking giving the 35-year-old a late cameo in a fixture like this.
He lost the physical battle with Gabriel to gift Declan Rice Arsenal’s second and then was caught completely out of position for the third. More

Jonny Evans second debut branded ‘absolute disgrace’ after coming on at 1-1 before dramatic late Arsenal goals

But the pair both came off during the match with out of favour Harry Maguire and ageing club legend Evans replacing them when the score was 1-1.
It left fans with little confidence as United defended for a point.
One said: “Maguire and Evans partnership hold me.”
Another added: “We’re actually having Maguire and Jonny Evans as our CB against Arsenal.”

One joked: “Johnny Evans-Harry Maguire. What is life?
Another fumed: “Maguire and Evans partnership against Arsenal, I am speechless.”
Fans fears were then realised with Evans having a nightmare.

Gabriel Jesus then put the cheery on top in the TENTH minute of added time to break United hearts further.
Again, Evans was involved, with the Brazilian onside by the veteran.
One fan said after the match: “I have no blame on Ten Hag. This is what United have to deal with having this ownership.
“It’s an absolute disgrace that he can’t look to the bench for Amrabat, he was forced into keeping Maguire.
“Name me one top half side that Maguire and Evans play as a partnership for.”
Another added: “Jonny Evans the deflection and then playing Jesus onside first one is unfortunate but can see his match fitness really isn’t there and that’s the key problem.
“Just looked a bit lost despite his experience and had a bit of a nightmare at a key stage in the game after coming on.”
Maguire’s United future looked over in the summer when he was stripped of captaincy by manager Erik ten Hag.
But a move to West Ham collapsed due to his wage demands, meanwhile Evans re-joined after leaving Leicester.

The game in North London was one to remember after Marcus Rashford opened the scoring on 27 minutes.

According to the Washington Post, Lingard held talks with the American club this summer after becoming a free agent following his departure from Nottingham Forest.
The versatile midfielder was seeking a guaranteed long-term contract and that led to negotiations hitting a snag.
Rooney also cited salary cap issues during a recent press conference and confirmed DC United were unlikely to add any free agents.
The 30-year-old had been spotted training across from Inter Miami’s DRV PNK Stadium as he revealed he was “considering all options”.

Lingard told Sky Sports: “I’m considering all options. I’ve never ruled out any team or club out, so for me it’s just picking the right team and it’s got to be right for me.
“I just want to play football at the end of the day and that’s all I want to do.”
Rooney also tried to bring United cult hero Morrison back to his team during the summer.
The playmaker joined DC last year and amassed two goals in 14 appearances.

The 30-year-old also trained with Rooney’s side during the summer as both sides searched for an agreement.
The former England international said Morrison has been “brilliant” but the club initially declined to bring him back for a second season.
Therefore, the MLS giants bought out the Jamaica international’s $850k (£675,000) contract this summer. More

Walcott was asked by Micah Richards who was the bigger club out of Arsenal and Manchester United
A smirking Roy Keane patted him on the back and called him “so naive and young” after Walcott opted for Arsenal
Sky Sport posted a video filmed by Micah Richards where he asked Walcott who was the bigger club out of United and Arsenal at this moment in time.
Walcott was diplomatic in his response and said: “Arsenal finished above Manchester United so if you were to go right now, for me, I feel like they are a club that are a bit more organised, especially behind the scenes.”
A smirking Keane then patted Walcott on the back and said: “So naive and young.”
After Keane’s intervention, Walcott then said: “But if you’re talking overall, United have definitely topped that.”

Neville was left fuming with the Red Devils’ unpopular owners and urged them to resolve this “toxic” situation.
However, the Sky Sports pundit doesn’t believe the takeover saga is over just yet as the “desperate” Americans have “run out of money” and need investment in.
Neville tweeted: “Morning and it’s Arsenal v United for me today on @SkySports. Join us if you like.
“P.S. I don’t believe the Glazers not selling/doing anything story. They have to do something.

“They’ve run out of money and the financial situation is desperate. They need investment in.
“They’re also having a toxic impact on the club from the inside out. The negligence continues for now but I don’t think it can go on without some action on raising funds.
“Also who would come in as a minority alongside them with the damage it would do to their reputation.”
Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al-Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe posed as the likeliest candidates to take over United.

Sheikh Jassim appeared to hold the advantage as he bid £6billion for a full takeover, compared to Ratcliffe’s offer for majority ownership that would see the Glazers retaining a minority stake.
SunSport reported how Jassim was close to finalising a deal – with Neville’s comments backing that up.
But it’s now claimed that the Manchester giants’ owners actually want closer to £10bn to sell.
The same source alleges that the American chiefs will try and sell the club again in 2025.
It’s believed they think the financial environment in two years time will attract more bidders, especially from the US due to the 2026 World Cup that will be staged in America, Mexico and Canada.
This comes after the most recent set of financial figures showed United’s gross debt stood at a staggering £725million in the quarter ending in June. More

Man Utd confirm new signings’ squad numbers but fans plead ‘make it make sense’ over strange Bayinder and Hojlund picks

MANCHESTER UNITED have confirmed their squad numbers for this season, but it’s fair to say some of the selections have raised a few eyebrows.Backup goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir, who arrived from Fenerbache for £4.3million on deadline day has been handed the No1 shirt.

Many would have expected Andre Onana to take that jersey, but he prefers the No24 shirt which he wore when he broke through at Ajax.
He says that the shirt has a special meaning to him as it represents his day and month of birth, which is on the second of April.
Fans were also left confused by Rasmus Hojlund being given the No11 shirt this season.
Hojlund, 20, arrived from Atalanta as Manchester United’s top striker target in a £72m deal earlier this window.

Many would have expected the striker to have been given a more traditional attacking number, but with the club failing to secure a deal for Anthony Martial, the No9 remains taken.
Fans on Twitter expressed their confusion at the numbers, with one writing: “Wow that’s interesting! Our backup goalkeeper is #1 and our no. 9 is no. 11 – make it make sense.”
And a second wrote: “Number 11 is cursed since Giggs.”
And a third wrote: “They gave Hojlund WHAT number?” referring to the supposed curse of the shirt.

Since Giggs left the club, the shirt has been worn by Adnan Januzaj, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood.
But not all were negative about Hojlund’s number, with one saying: “Rasmus will be cooking with that Giggs iconic jersey number.”
In other squad number news, Sergio Reguilon has been handed the No15 shirt after signing for the club on loan from Tottenham.
Meanwhile, Jonny Evans will wear the No35 shirt, seemingly to remind fans of his age.
And there has not been an official announcement on what shirt new signing Sofyan Amrabat will wear, his signature coming too late to be included in the squad against Arsenal today.
The No4 shirt is currently vacant at United so it is likely he will be handed that number, given he uses it on international duty for Morocco. More

Man Utd make major Mason Greenwood decision as they release new squad numbers for this season

On Friday it was revealed that the striker, 21, had been thrown a last-ditch lifeline by top European club Lazio.
Greenwood, who was tipped to be the next big thing by Sir Alex Ferguson, has not played competitive football since January last year.
He was arrested and charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, before the case was dropped by the CPS in February.
Greenwood had hoped for a return to United but was axed earlier this month following mounting pressure from fans.
And now his number 11 shirt has been given to another player.
Rasmus Hojlund will now wear the number after his £72million transfer from Atalanta.
Greenwood “mutually agreed” to leave United on August 21 following backlash over his potential return to the squad after his arrest for attempted rape and sexual assault.
He was charged in October last year but all charges were dropped in February by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Greenwood has not kicked a ball for Utd since January 2022 when he was suspended and it was decided this month that it would be best for all if his future was away from Old Trafford.
Following Greenwood’s recent signing for Madrid-based club Getafe, United said in a statement: “Mason Greenwood has signed for La Liga side Getafe CF on a season-long loan, subject to international clearance.
“The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United.
“The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.”
Getafe announced the move with a video of fans wildly celebrating outside the club’s Coliseum Alfonso Perez stadium.
They began jumping and chanting when the deal was confirmed.
Greenwood’s last match for United was in the 1-0 Premier League win over West Ham on January 22 last year.
