Erik ten Hag matches unwanted Solskjaer record as Man Utd slump to Bayern Munich defeat

ERIK TEN HAG has matched an unwanted record set by one his predecessors as Manchester United manger – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Red Devils slumped to a 4-3 defeat away to Bayern Munich in the Champions League last night.

Ten Hag’s men very much second best at Allianz Arena – despite Bayern not being on their best form..
Man Utd’s defeat was compounded by a goalkeeping howler by £47m summer signing Andre Onana in Munich.
The Red Devils came into the match on the back of an embarrassing 3-1 drubbing at home to Brighton.
This came just two weeks on from another crippling 3-1 loss to Arsenal.

The last time the Red Devils lost three games in a row was four years ago, under Solsjkaer.
It was April 2019 when United lost three in a row – heavy defeats away to Barcelona and Everton and a humiliating Manchester derby loss at Old Trafford.
That was near the end of the Norwegian’s first six months in charge – and was only made the permanent boss a few weeks before.
Ten Hag however has been in the managerial position for well over a year now and finds himself under alot more pressure.

Another unwanted record is that United have conceded three or more goals in three straight games for the first time since Dave Sexton was manager in 1978.
Last night’s result leaves the team bottom of their Champions League group after matchday one – as Galatasary drew 2-2 with Copenhagen.

Solskjaer slams Man Utd for missing out on Kane and names FOUR stars he begged Man Utd to sign including Jude Bellingham

OLE GUNNER SOLSKJAER has revealed in a new interview that he pleaded with United to sign five top players before he ultimately lost his job.Solskjaer was sacked following a 4-1 away defeat to Watford in November 2021 after a start to the season which saw them lose five of their opening seven games.

In an interview with The Athletic, Solskjaer opened up on everything that went wrong during his tenure, including tactics, signings and the club’s ownership.
And one area where he feels that he was not backed was in bringing transfers in.
Solskjaer said he identified a number of stars with potential that United failed to sign during his tenure.
He claims that United “couldn’t” sign these young players and when he was asked by The Athletic who they were he said: “Erling Haaland, before he made his Salzburg debut.

“Declan Rice, who wouldn’t have cost what he did in the summer.
“We discussed Moises Caicedo, but we felt we needed players ready for there and then.
“Brighton are very good at letting players come from abroad and find their feet for a year and a half.
“At United, you don’t have that luxury and that has cost the club loads of players.

He also explained how he’d asked the United board to sign Jude Bellingham, saying: “We wanted Jude Bellingham badly — he’s a Man United player, but I respect he chose Dortmund. That was probably sensible.
“But it’s why I respect Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Dan James and Jadon [Sancho].
“Young players prepared to come into a team that wasn’t 100 per cent there like it was when I arrived.”
He also explained how he would have done his utmost to sign Harry Kane this summer had he still been the United manager.
Reports emerged yesterday that Kane “had his heart set” on a move to United and even would have waited until next summer to make the move on a free.
But united were not interested after turning their attentions to £72million rated Rasmus Hojlund.
Speaking about his long-term interest in Kane, Solskjaer said: “I would have signed Kane every day of the week and my understanding was that he wanted to come.
“But the club didn’t have the budget with the financial constraints from Covid-19, there was no bottomless pit.”
Kane himself commented on United’s interest this summer, saying: “Man United option for me last summer? Obviously there were talks with different clubs.

Ten Hag has NO regrets about missing out on Harry Kane despite horror start as Man Utd boss lauds ‘big talent’ Hojlund

But the striker, 30, ended up leaving Tottenham for Champions League opponents Bayern Munich in a £104million deal.
United brought in rookie Rasmus Hojland, 20, for an initial £64m but they have slumped to THREE defeats in their opening five Prem games.
Asked if he had any regrets at not landing Kane, Ten Hag said: “No. We are happy with Rasmus.
“For the first game, he was injured. He played against Arsenal, he’s had a start, now we have to integrate him in the team.

“You can see he’s a big talent.”
United have scored just six goals in five Prem games this season, while Kane has netted four times in four Bundesliga matches.
Now that Hojlund has returned from a back injury, Ten Hag is confident the Dane will form a great partnership with Marcus Rashford, who hit career-best 30 goals last season.
He said: “We have to work on how the two can benefit from each other.

“But they have to know each other and that process has just started but at the same time, we need results. It has to go hand in hand.
“We learn from every training session and every game and we reflect.
“We have seen Rasmus and Rashy together, they are talking about how they can benefit from each other.
“You can see that discussion and the interaction is going on, on the pitch, you can see that connection is there and they will get the routines there.”
The pair combined to find the net and what they thought was an equaliser on Saturday against Brighton.
But the ball had run out of play before Rashford crossed it and United went on to lose 3-1.
It has put the pressure on as they return to Champions League action tomorrow after last season’s third placed finish.
Ten Hag said: “We are in a process and what you see is in parts of games we play very good but in parts of games we play below our levels.
“What we have to demand is to be consistent, we have to step up in certain levels, for 90-plus minutes.”
We are happy with Rasmus.Ten Hag on Hojlund
United arrived in Munich without 12 players available, nine of whom are injured.
Raphael Varane, Mason Mount and Harry Maguire trained today but did not travel to Germany.
Ten Hag said: “One thing is true – from the start last season I almost never started with the best starting XI.
“It was always something like an injury. But you have to deal with it and we always get the results, apart from the period we are in now.
“That is football and I have the experience in the past, I have managed it in the past.
“Of course, it’s a concern but that’s why we constructed the squad with depth – so we can deal with it. The squad can deal with it.”
United face a Bayern team at the Allianz Arena who are unbeaten in their last 27 group games at home – a record going back ten years.
But the last team to avoid defeat here in the group stage was managed by Ten Hag when Ajax drew in 2018.

Man Utd fans say ‘finally some good news’ as FOUR injured stars return to training ahead of Bayern Munich test

MANCHESTER UNITED fans have rejoiced at the news that FOUR stars have returned to training ahead of tomorrow’s game against Bayern Munich.Manager Erik Ten Hag had preached patience to fans wanting the injured stars to return for the Bayern Munich game, saying they were more likely to make the squad for next week’s trip to Burnley.

Amrabat returned but did not train with the main group
He said after Saturday’s defeat to Brighton: “Maybe, maybe one player, but I think Munich is a little bit too short. But I think, when we go to Burnley in the week after, I think players will return, yes.”
But United fans have in fact been handed a huge boost with Mason Mount, Raphael Varane, Sofyan Amrabat and Kobbie Mainoo all returning.
Varane missed the last two United matches with an unspecified muscle problem and Mount has missed the last three.
The pair trained alongside the main group and should be available for selection against Bayern Munich.

Sofyan Amrabat meanwhile is continuing to train away from the main group as he looks to regain fitness before making his United debut.
The midfielder was set to play a part for Morocco during the international break but picked up a minor tweak, meaning he’ll have to continue to wait to make his debut for United.
In another boost for United, Kobbie Mainoo has finally returned to training after picking up an injury against Real Madrid in pre-season.
The 18-year-old was one of United’s highlights of the pre-season but a tackle from Madrid winger Rodrygo ruled him out for months.

Like Amrabat, he did not take part in full training.
Anticipation for his return will be high as Ten Hag continues to tinker to try and find his strongest possible midfield.
United fans on Twitter were buzzing with the injury boost after a testing opening period of the season.
Reacting to the return of the four, one fan on Twitter said “Finally, some good news for United. Will the presence of Varane and Mount be sufficient to inspire a positive result for them at Bayern tho? I highly doubt it.”
Another wrote: “Great to see Mason Mount and Raphael Varane back in action for Manchester United! The team is looking stronger than ever!”
A third wrote: “Good news. They’ll be back to their winning form.”
United face Bayern Munich at The Allianz Arena tomorrow at 8pm in what will be Harry Kane’s Champions League debut for the Bundesliga side.
Earlier today, reports emerged that Kane had his heart set on a move to United, not Bayern, this summer but United opted to sign Rasmus Hojlund instead.

Kane, 30, had been Man United’s key transfer target at the beginning of the summer.
But as the reality of what Tottenham would demand for him despite his contract status became clear, the Red Devils decided to pivot to Rasmus Hojlund instead.
According to the Mail, Kane would have been willing to see out the final year of his Spurs contract before joining United on a free transfer, had they given him the requisite assurances.
However, Kane has now given his own view on the saga, explaining, via Fabrizio Romano: “Man United option for me last summer? Obviously there were talks with different clubs.

“But FC Bayern was a club I was really interested in. Once they came in there weren’t many other options. Manchester is a big club but I’m very happy here.”
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was reportedly under pressure from his boss Joe Lewis to cash in on Kane rather than lose him for nothing next year.
But Kane would have been willing to resist if a move to Old Trafford was in play.
When the Red Devils forked out £72million for Rasmus Hojlund, however, the England captain gave up on the switch and decided to prioritise Bayern Munich.

Forgotten Man Utd flop signed to replace Cristiano Ronaldo scores beauty in MLS aged 34 as commentator hails his ‘class’

The former United winger rolled back the years as he spun on a sixpence 25 yards from goal before curling the ball home with a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.
Reacting to the goal, the American commentator said: “Oh! That’s the class of a man that used to play for Manchester United.”
And fans on Twitter also reacted to the former United man rolling back the years.
One wrote: “When are Man Utd going to buy him back?”

    Another wrote: “Lethal strike!”
And a third wrote: “Left footed goal, thanks Gabby!”
Obertan, 34, joined the third-tier American side in 2021 from Turkish side Erzurumspor.
It’s the latest move in a journeyman career for the winger since leaving United.
    Most read in Football
Obertan was signed from Bordeaux in 2009 by Sir Alex Ferguson to help shoulder the burden of replacing Cristiano Ronaldo – who had just joined Real Madrid.
But the winger’s two year stint in Manchester proved to be miserable as he scored just one goal in 28 appearances for The Red Devils.
He was then sold to Newcastle in 2011 where he made 75 appearances, scoring three goals and registering 10 assists during that time.
Moves to Anzhi Makhachkala and Wigan Athletic followed before joining Bulgarian side Levski Sofia and then Erzurumspor.
Sir Alex Ferguson had high-hopes when he signed Obertan at the age of just 17.
United had to fend off interest from Arsenal and AC Milan to make the signing in 2009, and Ferguson said after securing his signature: “Gabriel is a player we have tracked for a few years now … there is a goal in Gabby, there is no question of that.”
Ferguson wasn’t exactly far off with that, with Obertan scoring a singular goal during his stint with the Red Devils More

Tough guy Ten Hag’s not a school headmaster… if his approach doesn’t lead Man Utd to more wins then it isn’t working

WE know he’s a tough guy, who’s not afraid to make the tough calls, Erik ten Hag.That much is brutally apparent.
Erik ten Hag already has two big questions to answer early in the seasonCredit: EPA
Contrast Ten Hag’s treatment of Jadon Sancho with the more understanding approach to Richarlison shown by Spurs manager Ange PostecoglouCredit: Rex
Here’s the guy who bombed out Cristiano Ronaldo, stripped Harry Maguire of the captaincy, released David de Gea and has now frozen out Jadon Sancho.
Big balls, this fella. Proper hardline. An alpha male. A ‘come on punk, make my day’ kind of a boss.
Cue a standing ovation from the cheap seats, where they’re convinced Premier League footballers are all filthy-rich prima donnas who need to be brought down a peg.
Ten Hag says there was ‘no good culture’ when he arrived at Manchester United, after the benign reign of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and that supply-teacher interlude under Ralf Rangnick.
    READ MORE TOP STORIES
And most managerial appointments are a reaction against the predecessor.
Who knows, when Ten Hag goes, maybe United will replace him with Peter Kay or one of Britain’s other leading light entertainers.
But with United in the bottom half of the table after five poor performances out of five, two questions arise.
Firstly, can Ten Hag’s ‘my way or the highway’ routine actually work at an elite club in the 21st century?
    Most read in Football
FREE BETS – BEST BETTING OFFERS AND BONUSES NEW CUSTOMERS
And secondly, while he has proved adept at tearing things apart, is the Dutchman actually showing any signs of building anything positive?
Consider Ten Hag’s approach to  Sancho, against that of Tottenham’s Ange Postecoglou towards Richarlison.
The known circumstances are very different — Sancho is accused of lacking professionalism, while Richarlison has admitted he is struggling on a human level and seeking help with his mental health.
But the contrast in approach between the two managers still feels relevant.
Postecoglou spoke with intelligence and decency about Richarlison’s struggles on Friday.
The following day, the Brazilian headed an equaliser to spark an  improbable injury-time comeback win against Sheffield United.
Ten Hag publicly stated that Sancho had trained poorly when he was left out of the squad for the defeat at Arsenal.
And when Sancho effectively accused his boss of lying and making him a ‘scapegoat’, he refused to  apologise and has been frozen out of first-team training as a result.
Ten Hag has frozen Jadon Sancho out after a controversial disputeCredit: Getty
Consider that Antony  is currently on leave of absence to address accusations of assaulting women, with Mason Greenwood on loan at Getafe after allegations of attempted rape, coercion and assault were dropped.
So it’s not as if Sancho is the baddest man at Carrington. And it’s not as if Ten Hag didn’t need wingers.
Indeed, he sent out a team in a midfield diamond, without wide forwards, against Brighton on Saturday and United took a 3-1 hiding.
The subject of footballers’ mental health is often turned on and off like a tap.
Dele Alli opens up bravely about the impact of an extremely difficult upbringing, and everyone salutes his bravery, promising to remember that footballers are humans and cut them some slack.
Then Sancho gets called out and he’s widely accused of being an ill-disciplined brat.
It would be interesting to hear Sancho’s full story but if he gave it, he would doubtless be fined two weeks’ wages.
Remember that Sancho was given an extended break last season to work on ‘physical and mental issues’.
Maybe a genuine tough guy doesn’t always need to make a show of being the tough guy. Footballers respect managers who are authentic.
Also remember that Sancho was bold enough to leave his comfort zone by moving to Borussia Dortmund as a 17-year-old and tore it up in the Bundesliga — a forerunner to Jude Bellingham.
Paint Sancho as a wrong ‘un all you like but the truth is almost certainly more complex. He’s probably a bundle of contradictions like most of us.
And he’s also a £73million player who operates in a position where United are lacking.
Ten Hag is a football manager, not the headmaster of a reform school.
If his approach doesn’t lead to United winning more football matches, then it isn’t working.
And maybe a genuine tough guy doesn’t always need to make such a show of being the tough guy.
Footballers respect managers who are authentic. Are United’s players respectful of Ten Hag’s methods?
Well it’s not as if Ten Hag’s ‘toughness’ is being reflected on the pitch.Brighton waltzed through a static defence several times as they chalked up their fourth consecutive  victory over United.
This season, United haven’t looked like a team with an identity and a plan.
Ten Hag built a wonderful side at Ajax but there are few signs of anything similar at Old Trafford.
Most of the club’s problems are not Ten Hag’s fault, especially as the Glazer family’s alleged ‘sale process’ drags on tortuously.
But United still spent just under £170million this summer only to have gone backwards.
It was widely expected that United would bid for Harry Kane — who faces them in the Champions League with Bayern Munich tomorrow. But maybe that would have been too obvious — too much like Easy Street for Ten Hag.
Instead, this tough guy walks the hard yards.
He must hope that his players are willing to follow him.
    Lord’s player
SAY anything  negative about the Premier League’s wealthiest clubs and you are  invariably accused of jealousy.
Yet nobody secretly wishes they support one of the Manchester clubs or Chelsea or Newcastle.
No, God’s chosen people are Brighton fans — the street cred of the hard-times back story, the glorious rise, the ridiculously successful transfer policy, the beautiful football and the frequent mullerings of the elite.
As they make their European debut against AEK Athens on Thursday, we wish Seagulls supporters all the very best.
    The lucky, lucky bleeders.
    Out to lunch
COLIN MURPHY, who has died  aged 79, was a successful lower-league manager, most notably at Lincoln City.
He was an obsessive football watcher, renowned for having the most high-mileage vehicle in the game.
Yet Murphy is best remembered for his  magnificently bewildering programme notes.
Murphy once wrote: “You, me, we, all of us have been forced to breakfast on travesty, lunch on objection and insult, dine on inflicted pressure.“High tea we daren’t sit still long enough to take and, by supper, we were still expected to have been victorious.”
Doubtless followed by: “Glenn Cockerill remains sidelined by a hamstring injury and I’d like to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Port Vale to Sincil Bank for today’s  Division Three fixture.”
    Skewered
WHILE waiting to interview Gareth Southgate in a Hampden concourse last week, we perused the menu on offer to Scottish football fans.
Top of the list a kebab pie.
