Man Utd face worst-case scenario with Mason Greenwood set to stay when deadline passes today & no Saudi clubs interested

MANCHESTER United are facing a worst-case scenario if the transfer window deadline passes without a spot for Mason Greenwood. The Old Trafford club cut ties with the 21-year-old striker last week after being suspended following his arrest in January last year.

Greenwood had reportedly been set to be welcomed back into the fold before SunSport exclusively reported United had made a U-turn due to the volatile reaction.
Other English clubs are said to similarly fear a public backlash if they were to provide Greenwood with a return to the pitch.
The transfer window deadline will pass for English clubs at 11pm tonight, with initial inquiries from domestic teams not followed up.
Failure to offload the £75,000-a-week Greenwood will leave United facing a bill of up to £8million.

This is because he still has two years left to run on his contract, with the club having the option to extend it by a further 12 months.
Instead, the striker has been left with no alternative but to move to an overseas club.
And if United cannot also mutually agree on cancelling Greenwood’s deal, his options are slim.
This is because most of Europe’s top leagues also shut their transfer windows on Friday.

The Scottish deadline passes at midnight, while it is 4pm in Germany and 6pm in Italy.
Clubs in Spain and France will no longer be able to sign players from 11pm and 10pm respectively.
It was reported this morning that Greenwood had been thrown a last-ditch lifeline by top European club Lazio – but the Italian deadline passed at 7pm.
There have also been no inquiries from Saudi Arabia, where teams have already hoovered up Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Karim Benzema this season.
The deadline in Saudi Arabia passes on September 7.
One of his last remaining hopes would lie with Besiktas, who are understood to be one of two Turkish clubs interested in opening the door for his return.
There is no rush to get a deal done by the time the UK transfer window closes at 11pm on Friday because the Turkish deadline is not until September 15.
Fans in football-mad Turkey are unlikely to be put off by the allegations made against Greenwood if he recreates his United form on the pitch, according to Besiktas supporter Orunc Kamiloglu.
The fan added: “He hasn’t been convicted of any crime so why should it make a difference.
“If he plays well in the black and white jersey, the fans will love him and take him to their hearts.”
Greenwood “mutually agreed” to leave United on August 21 following backlash over his potential return to the squad after his arrest for attempted rape and sexual assault.
He was charged in October last year but all charges were dropped in February by the Crown Prosecution Service.

In a statement United said they “recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career” at the club.
They said his exit was the “most appropriate” result from the saga, adding: “We will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”

LaLiga strugglers ‘enter race to sign Mason Greenwood as ex-Man Utd striker also approached by Italian giants Lazio’

MASON GREENWOOD is being targeted by Turkish side Getafe.Greenwood “mutually agreed” to leave United on August 21 following backlash over his potential return to the squad after he was charged for attempted rape and sexual assault.
Getafe have become the latest club to register an interest in signing Mason GreenwoodCredit: PA
Lazio in Italy and Turkey’s Besiktas are reportedly considering an approach for the striker.
And now according to the Daily Mail, Getafe are interested in bringing Greenwood to Spain on a short-term deal as they struggle in 11th.
The ex-England international was charged in October last year but the case was dropped in February by the Crown Prosecution Service.
Greenwood has not kicked a ball professionally since January 2022 when he was suspended.

And it was decided that it would be best for all if his future was away from Old Trafford.
If United cannot find him a club they may be faced with paying up his £75,000 a week contract.
That still has two years left to run with the option of a further 12 months had the club wanted to take it up.
That would mean a pay off of nearly £8million.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Lazio were given the opportunity to sign Greenwood before the British transfer deadline day closes.
It comes after Turkish giants Besiktas were linked with an approach for the forward on a loan deal.
Another Turkish club is also understood to be interested, and Turkey might be a more realistic destination as the Süper Lig transfer window deadline is not until September 15.

Fans of Mason Greenwood’s ‘new club’ give their verdict on star striker after throwing him lifeline

Another Turkish club is also understood to be interested, though the Süper Lig transfer window deadline is not until September 15.

Other supporters have taken to social media to voice their views on the potential move, with some encouraging the club to “take the risk”.
Another said: “He is a pure talent who will be of great use to us at the forward end.”
But others have slammed their club over the links, saying: “Beşiktaş is a progressive club that has strong values.
“We all heard this man. He has no place at our club. Do not get involved.”

Another described the move as “utterly despicable”.
It comes after a source told The I that discontent towards Greenwood would soon disappear if he returned impressive performances.
They said: “A short loan is appealing, though. If things go wrong, he will return to Manchester quickly.
“If he comes to Istanbul and scores goals straight away, the boos will quickly go.
“That is just the way that football works, however bad a taste that leaves. I think Turkish fans will accept him.”
News had earlier broken that Greenwood was set to be welcomed back into the fold at Old Trafford, before United made a U-turn following a backlash from the public.
However, it has since emerged that Besiktas and another Turkish club are understood to be open to providing Greenwood with a return to football.
Any deal will be on a loan basis with interested clubs said to be hesitant as the striker has been out the game since last playing in January 2022.
If the move to Turkey goes ahead, Greenwood will be swapping a home in one of Cheshire’s elite villages for new climes.
And a move to Besiktas could see him soon be settling in Bebek.
With a stunning beachfront on the Bosphorus, Bebek will offer a dramatic contrast to the leafy confines of Bowdon and Hale.
However it now appears that Bebek can easily match the luxury car showrooms and wine bars associated with Wilmslow and Alderley Edge.
If United cannot find him a club they may be faced with paying up his £75,000 a week contract.
That still has two years left to run with the option of a further 12 months had the club wanted to take it up.
That would mean a pay off of nearly £8million.

United’s clash with Bayern will see them come face to face with former top striker target Harry Kane in the group stage clash.
Rasmus Hojlund will come up against former club FC Copenhagen and United will also face a tricky trip to Turkish giants Galatasaray.
The competition will kick off after the upcoming international break with matchday one beginning on September the 19th.
United are back in Europe’s biggest competition after failing to qualify for last year’s Champions League.

Their tumultuous 2021/22 season saw them finish sixth under interim manager Ralf Rangnick and only qualify for last year’s Europa League.
There, they would ultimately crash out to Sevilla in the quarter-finals despite beating LaLiga champions Barcelona on the way to reach the quarters.
Returning to this year’s Champions League represented a major success for Erik Ten Hag in his first season in charge at United.
The club comfortably secured their return to Europe’s biggest stage by finishing third in the Premier League.

Ten Hag also brought silverware to United for the first time since Jose Mourinho’s Europa League victory in 2017 with victory in the Carabao Cup.
United have strengthened their squad since then, adding new goalkeeper Andre Onana, Mason Mount and striker Rasmus Hojlund in the hope of challenging for the biggest honours this season.
It’s been a mixed start to the season for the Red Devils so far this season, however.
They emerged with a 1-0 victory in their opening day clash against Wolves despite not being the better side and followed that up with a 2-0 defeat away at Tottenham.
United returned to winning ways at the weekend with a 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest but even that came after United fell two goals behind in the opening five minutes.
Ten Hag will be hoping to further bolster his options by the time United play their first Champions League fixture, as a deal for Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat remains in the works.
The club would also like to add another forward before the end of the window, after Ten Hag initially counted on bringing Mason Greenwood back into the fold. More

It is a favourable draw for Arsenal on their return following a six-year absence, with first seeds Sevilla only qualifying for the Champions League because they won the Europa League.
PSV needed to beat Rangers in a play-off to qualify and RC Lens, who make up the group, have not played in the Champions League since 2002-03.
Newcastle have faced an even longer wait to return to Europe’s premier competition, having spent 20 years away from the Champions League.
But they have been handed a nightmare draw in Group F against Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Sandro Tonali’s former team AC Milan.

They will be eager to avoid the disappointment of their 2020-21 Champions League group, when the Red Devils finished third.
Meanwhile defending champions Manchester City have been drawn against RB Leipzig, Red Star Belgrade and Young Boys in what fans have dubbed another easy group.

While an Arsenal supporter wrote: “Great draw couldn’t have asked for a better group. We should walk this group. Am buzzing for the Champions League nights.”
Another commented: “Honestly we must come out first in that group.”
City have also been handed a relatively straightforward group, leading disgruntled fans to claim the draw has been “rigged” in their favour.
Last year Pep Guardiola’s side faced Sevilla, Borussia Dortmund and Copenhagen and remained undefeated, before later going on to win the tournament.
In 2020-21 they won five out of six group games up against Porto, Olympiacos and Marseille. More

Henderson, 26, is set to have his medical today and will sign a five-year contract at Selhurst Park.
His move to South London brings to an end his 12-year spell with the Red Devils where he has challenged David De Gea for a starting spot.
But his pricey transfer will not gift him with the No1 shirt at Palace as he will have to fight Sam Johnstone for it.
The academy graduate joined United when he was 14 and made his senior debut in 2015.

Henderson has since had six loan spells at Stockport, Grimsby, Shrewsbury and Sheffield United – where he earned them Championship promotion.
His remarkable effort at Bramall Lane earned him his first and only England call-up in 2020.
More recently he spent the season at Nottingham Forest but made just 20 appearances during the 2022-23 campaign due to a thigh injury.
Steve Cooper was keen to steal Erik ten Hag’s No2 but the Eagles came in to swoop him away.

The England international will replace Vicente Guaita – who is expected to depart the Eagles after falling out with Hodgson after refusing to play in pre-season friendlies.
Henderson will join Palace’s new signings Jefferson Lerma and Matheus France from Flamengo.
But the South London side are still on the hunt for a Wilfred Zaha replacement who departed last month on a free transfer to Galatasaray.
Leicester’s Kelechi Iheanacho is a key target for Hodgson’s squad as well as Paris Saint-German’s Hugo Ekitike.
Meanwhile, United are lined-up to sign goalkeeper Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce to back-up summer arrival Andre Onana.

But as of a week ago they were not interested in the deal.
Fast forward to today and they are battling to get a loan over the line for the £30 million rated Moroccan international midfielder.
No doubt Mason Mount’s injury has played a part in that scenario.
Fiorentina will do the loan to help United get around FFP regulations as long as the Red Devils confirm they will make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

They are also still fighting to get a left-back on loan with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia injured.
Talks are ongoing to get one of Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella or Tottenham’s Sergio Reguilon.
Chelsea are demanding a £7million loan fee for Cucurella who turned out for Mauricio Pochettino against Wimbledon on Wednesday night.

That has led to the club clinging on to Harry Maguire who is wanted by West Ham.
In any case they were struggling to get that £30million outgoing done with their former captain holding out for a £15million pay off.
There was also news this week that new goalkeeper Andre Onana could be missing for up to a month in the New Year.
The Cameroon international has gone back on his decision to retire from international football meaning he will be required for the African Cup of Nations.
There are problems up front that the club are hoping new striker Rasmus Hojlund can solve starting this weekend.
He is expected to be on the bench after what was described as a slight injury picked up in pre-season with his former club Atalanta having stopped him from training with his new teammates until this week.
They definitely need someone upfront with all four of their goals in the opening three games coming from midfield with one headed in by Raphael Varane.

All this and the team have not started the new season well.
They were very fortunate to beat Wolves in their opening game.
The Red Devils then lost to Tottenham as they faded after a bright start.
Last weekend they were 2-0 down in the opening four minutes to a Nottingham Forest side who won only one game away from home in the whole of last season.

The Red Devils are in search of a new left-back before the transfer window closes on Friday.
Cucurella had been touted as a potential target but United now have doubts after he played for Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.
According to The Athletic, Erik ten Hag is considering a loan deal for Reguilon instead.
And a deal appears to be close, with United on the verge of landing him from Spurs until next summer.

The report adds that Cucurella will remain an option until the very end but that a move for the Spaniard is now more complicated.
United are making their decision based on both football and financial factors this week.

As for Reguilon, he is yet to play for Spurs this season after returning from a loan spell with Atletico Madrid.
United are keen to bring in a left-back before Friday’s 11pm deadline due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
Their absences have left Alvaro Fernandez as the only recognised left-back available to Ten Hag.
