How Man Utd’s on-field struggles and ownership change could see stunning Mason Greenwood U-turn

MANCHESTER United’s on-field struggles and rumoured ownership change could see the club make a stunning U-turn over Mason Greenwood. The 22-year-old striker was arrested in January last year following charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive control.

But Manchester United’s problems on and off the field could see him make a comebackCredit: Getty
The Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges this February, and Greenwood maintains his innocence.
Manager Erik Ten Hag reportedly expected to have Greenwood back in his squad this season – before the striker was sent to Spanish side Getafe on loan following an outcry.
The Red Devils now need to replace French striker Anthony Martial, whose contract is up next July.
United are also reportedly mulling whether to dump Brazilian flop Antony, who plays in a similar position to Greenwood.

Greenwood’s loan spell at Getafe will end just before Martial leaves – and Ten Hag may be tempted to bring him back.
Any inkling that Greenwood could make an Old Trafford comeback will cause renewed outrage.
But United look set to be under new ownership by the summer, with INEOS boss Sir Jim Ratcliffe closing in on a 25 per cent minority stake.
Club boss Richard Arnold, who made the decision not to bring Greenwood back after the backlash, is expected to leave when the new ownership takes control.

Ratcliffe and whoever he appoints to run the club could take a new approach – and let Ten Hag bring Greenwood back.
But the tycoon will also want to make his mark at Old Trafford through a “statement signing”.
Any genuine superstar arrival would likely be a striker, meaning a potential Greenwood comeback would be off the cards permanently.
Greenwood also reportedly wants to stay at Getafe after settling in Spain, so Ratcliffe may well let him stay in La Liga permanently. More

Jadon Sancho REMOVED from Man Utd WhatsApp group with winger’s Old Trafford future looking bleaker by the day

But in a move that further exiles the winger, Sancho has been removed from it.
He is already barred from training with the senior side or using any of their facilities, including the canteen, with his food taken across to the academy section — where he also changes in his own dressing room.
Sancho, 23, has been left to train on his own during a  stand-off that started after he was left out for September’s 3-1 loss at Arsenal.
Red Devils boss Ten Hag said his training was not up to standard.

But Sancho posted on social media: “I will not allow people saying things that are completely untrue, I conducted myself in training very well this week.”

Despite deleting  the post, Ten Hag called for an apology that never came.
Staff and team-mates have urged Sancho — who arrived from Borussia Dortmund for £73million in July 2021 — to back down but he has refused.
Marcus Rashford also told a United fan channel to “stop spreading  malicious rumours”.

Erik ten Hag in huge Man Utd boost as Sir Alex Ferguson is 100% behind him and will lobby club to stick with Dutchman

ERIK TEN HAG has received a further boost ahead of this week’s crunch clash with Copenhagen – the “unwavering support of Sir Alex Ferguson”.SunSport has learned the retired Manchester United boss – a key figure at Old Trafford – is 100 per cent behind the under-pressure Dutchman.

And the legendary Scot is believed to be ready to urge any new investors in the club to stick with the current manager.
Our story comes in the wake of United’s crucial weekend win at Fulham – which many said could have been Ten Hag’s last had the side lost.
A source said: “Erik has Sir Alex’s unwavering support. He’s been hugely supportive of Erik since he arrived at the club.
“He’s impressed at the job he is doing and, in particular, the way he has taken on big decisions.

“Sir Alex, like everyone else, wishes results were better this season.
“But he thinks those pointing at the manager and calling for a change are wrong.
“[Ferguson] thinks he’s shown the kind of character and mentality required to turn the club around – and he firmly believes Erik deserves time, like he got, to make a success of things at the club.
“If consulted, that’s a position he would be prepared to make clear to any new investors who come into the football club.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is set to take over the football operations at United once his 25 per cent stake is confirmed.
And recruiting a new manager is not a priority for Ratcliffe as the British billionaire is more concerned with improving the club’s transfer recruitment.
Ratcliffe is believed to be confident Ten Hag can change United’s fortunes if he is given time and the support of an effective recruitment strategy.
Meanwhile, the Dutchman – who has been compared to Fergie in the past – has been likened to Scotsman once again.
The source added: “Sir Alex had to make decisions all the time during his years as manager which were difficult and risked putting him on a collision course with his players.
“But he never shied away from doing what he felt was right for the club.
“This is a trait Erik is showing too, especially with the way he handled the recent Marcus Rashford situation.” More

Chelsea ‘identify Thiago Silva replacement’ with club ready to cash in but they could face battle with Man Utd

CHELSEA have eyed up Jean-Clair Todibo to replace Thiago Silva – who is set to leave the Blues at the end of the season. The centre-back – who is also wanted by Manchester United – has been warned by Nice he could be up for sale in 2024.

Silva, 39, is renowned as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
The veteran has made 137 appearances for Chelsea across four seasons after moving from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020.
But with his contract at Stamford Bridge set to expire next summer, the Brazilian’s future at the club is uncertain.
The West London side will be short of centre-half options if Silva departs, as Trevoh Chalobah’s Chelsea spell comes to an end too.

And with Wesley Fofana currently recovering from a knee ligament injury there is no guarantee he will be fit enough to start the 2024-25 campaign.
Todibo is potentially an excellent choice to take Silva’s spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
The ex-Barcelona star has spent just over two seasons on the French Riviera.
The 23-year-old has enjoyed a successful start for Nice, playing 104 times and helping his side on their way to the Coupe de France final in 2021-22.

Despite missing out on Todibo in the summer due to Harry Maguire’s failed transfer to West Ham – the Red Devils still have an eye on the Frenchman.
Whether Nice allow the French international to depart mid-season depends on their standing in the Ligue 1 table.
So far this term, the French giants are unbeaten in 11 games and sit top of the league – a point ahead of rivals PSG.
Nice have conceded just four goals in 2023-24 thanks to the help of Todibo’s defensive prowess.
But Nice may still choose to cash in on the defender in the New Year to maximise their profits.
This would be great news for Chelsea as, like Silva, Tobido is right-footed and plays on the right-hand side of the pitch. More

Man Utd ‘could go back in for Federico Chiesa transfer’ but face competition from Arsenal as Antony and Sancho struggle

MANCHESTER UNITED could end up in a transfer battle with Arsenal if they go back in for Juventus’ Federico Chiesa, according to reports. The Italian winger is on both of the Premier League clubs’ radar for the upcoming transfer window.

Chiesa, 26, is a transfer target for the Red Devils and the Gunners, according to Calciomercato.
Both sides are desperate to add depth in their wide areas in the January transfer window.
Juventus’ No7 is “very ambitious” about a move to the Premier League and believes top-flight English football will enrich his career.
Erik ten Hag’s struggling side has suffered immensely this term with Antony underwhelming and Jadon Sancho frozen out.

And Chiesa could be the missing piece to the Man Utd squad after scoring four goals and picking up one assist in ten league games this term.
The report added the Italian international speaks very good English which makes him a strong candidate for Ten Hag.
United have targeted the winger on several occasions, and in the summer Juventus wanted £90million for their star man.
But even with the player now valued at £56m, this may be too steep for United.

Therefore, they are also considering a cheaper deal for Flamengo star Gabriel Barbosa.
Meanwhile, Arsenal have heavily depended on Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli in their wings.
The Euro 2020 champ could assist Mikel Arteta to add more quality into his side and allow him to rotate with players.
Chiesa built his reputation after helping his nation win the European Championship.
After suffering from a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury in January 2022 his development was widely affected.
But his impressive start in this year’s campaign has proved the Italian is starting to get back on his feet. More

Man Utd almost solved defensive woes four years ago with Premier League star now labelled ‘transfer of the season’

They are also at risk of dropping out of the Champions League at the group stages.
And to make matters worse, they crashed out of the Carabao Cup last week following a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle.
United boss Erik ten Hag has spent around £407m in total since taking the helm at Old Trafford last summer, but he is yet to build a squad that can challenge for the league title.
Arguably United’s weakest area right now is in defence, with £55m man Lisandro Martinez set for a long spell on the sidelines with a foot injury.

Both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have also been absent for the majority of the season so far, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka has just returned from a hamstring injury.
Ten Hag is now putting all his faith in the likes of Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.
Raphael Varane, meanwhile, has been benched for the last three games for “tactical” reasons.
But Man Utd’s defensive issues could have been dramatically reduced had they signed one of the Premier League’s most promising centre-backs four years ago.

Man Utd had the chance to sign Nathan Collins back in 2019Credit: Getty
In 2019 the Red Devils were linked with then-18-year-old Stoke star Nathan Collins.
However, a deal never came to fruition.
Collins went on to join Burnley in 2021, where he spent one season before moving to Wolves.
And in July he completed a club-record £23m transfer to Brentford, where he has since established himself as an important first team player.
The Ireland international scored the winning goal to complete Brentford’s impressive comeback against West Ham on Saturday.
And he has since received heaps of praise from both fans and his manager, Thomas Frank.
Speaking after the match, Frank said: “There’s so much potential in Nathan.
“He’s just started his career, more or less. I know he’s played Premier League football before, but at 22 you are not even close to your highest level.
“He’s done well for us. Last week [the 2-0 win over Chelsea] was a good step in the right direction. I think today [there were] also a lot of important clearances on set pieces and then he finally scored. What a cross from Mathias Jensen and what a header.”
Fans took to social media following the 3-2 win to laud the young defender, with one person writing: “Nathan Collins – what a signing.”
Another added: “Nathan Collins was phenomenal today. MOTM.”
A third fan wrote: “£23m for Nathan Collins looks more and more like a bargain with every game that goes by.”

While a fourth simply said: “Nathan Collins. F*****g mustard.”
On top of his club career, Collins has made 17 senior appearances for the Republic of Ireland, scoring once.

Man Utd crisis is just around the corner, Ten Hag’s scattergun reign is like Unai Emery’s final days at Arsenal

SAVED in Fergie time, Erik ten Hag is now limping into Unai time as Manchester United get ready for the inevitable.Bruno Fernandes’ 91st-minute winner means the Old Trafford crisis talks are on hold.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag could be on his way outCredit: Rex
But no one should be fooled into believing that this unconvincing victory means that a corner has been turned.
They remain just one poor performance away from a crisis which could arrive as early as Wednesday night, when defeat in Copenhagen would leave their Champions League hopes seriously in the balance.
And the longer the uncertainty drags on, the more it feels like Unai Emery’s ill-starred 18 months in charge at Arsenal.
It was back in November 2019 when Arsenal reluctantly accepted that Emery had to go after he had lost the support of the players and  the fans.
    Read More on Man Utd
The Spaniard had made a dozen new signings at vast expense but there was no sense of direction or purpose about what he was trying to achieve.
He alienated the dressing room when he tried to play the disciplinarian hard man and it soon became apparent his players  stopped believing in him.
    Sound familiar?
Ten Hag has been backed to the tune of £400million in the transfer market but it has been a scattergun spending spree and none of the new signings have had a significant impact.
    Most read in Football
And as much as the players spoke of fighting spirit and backing the manager after Saturday’s mid-table victory at Fulham, they were fooling no one.
The starting line-up was the weakest United team many of the away fans could remember.
Antony, Ten Hag’s £85.5m biggest signing, was a liability once again, constantly surrendering cheap possession and showing a complete lack of discipline before being hauled off midway through the second half.
Christian Eriksen looked like a player whose legs have gone and was totally unsuited to a holding midfield role.

And Rasmus Hojlund cut an isolated and frustrated figure all alone up front as he battled in vain for his first Prem goal.
Even Fernandes’ stoppage-time winner owed more to luck and Fulham’s defensive deficiencies than any scintillating attacking play by United, with the ball ricocheting three times off Facundo Pellistri before dropping into the United captain’s path.
And that would have been academic but for Andre Onana’s double save from Harry Wilson and Joao Palhinha.
The jury is still out on United’s £43.8m keeper but  he is putting himself on the line in his manager’s hour of need.
Onana said: “Maybe those saves were important but what mattered most was the goal from Bruno, because that is what gave us this victory.
“The clean sheet gives us a lot of confidence but sometimes you don’t concede a goal and still only draw. The result was all that mattered.
Ten Hag still has support but could suffer another major setbackCredit: Rex
“But the clean sheet showed how hard we are working because we had to defend and suffer together and I am very happy with the way we fought for this win.”
It brought some much-needed breathing space for Ten Hag.
His supporters — and there are still plenty of those — claim he just needs time.
They point to the job Mikel Arteta is doing for Arsenal after being given the benefit of the doubt when initial results were not great.
But Arteta survived because it was clear to see what he was trying to achieve and his signings were a significant improvement on what had gone before.
None of that is currently the case with Ten Hag. No one can argue with the Dutchman’s record at Ajax.
But it is  not happening for him at United and after 18 months  it is difficult to see how he turns things around.
So sooner or later someone has to grasp the nettle and call time on a talented coach in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Bruno Fernandes ‘lined up for shock Man Utd transfer exit’ as Saudi bosses ‘set to meet Red Devils captain’s entourage’

BRUNO FERNANDES could be on for a shock exit from Manchester United according to reports. Italian reporter Rudy Galetti has said that the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund are exploring a deal for the Man Utd captain.

PIF controls majority stakes in the four biggest teams in the Saudi Arabian top division.
Al-Nassr, Al Hilal, Al Ittihad and Al Ahli all have investment from the Saudi fund who also own Newcastle United.
And after a summer of huge name signings for the Saudi Pro League, it’s said they’re already setting their sights on their next targets.
Fernandes is reportedly a name emerging from the list of potential signings for summer 2024.

The Portuguese playmaker arrived at Old Trafford in 2020 from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth up to £60million.
And has since made 200 appearances for the Red Devils scoring 67 goals and registering 57 assists.
