I turned down Man Utd and got banned for smoking on the BENCH – now I’m playing for a team run by the POLICE

BELGIUM star Radja Nainggolan has made an arresting new move … to a club run by Indonesia’s national POLICE.The former Roma, Inter Milan and Cagliari midfielder was a free agent after leaving Italians SPAL in the summer.

Nainggolan has now signed a deal until the end of the season with Bhayangkara FC, who are bottom of Indonesia’s Liga 1.
Nicknamed the Guardians, they are owned by the Asian country’s police service – and many of his team-mates are serving cops.
Antwerp-born Nainggolan’s estranged father, Marianus, is Indonesian, and his first name means “King” in the local language.
The 35-year-old said: “I didn’t hesitate for a moment when I saw how keen the club was to sign me.

“I was really starting to miss football, I still enjoy myself out on the pitch, and I’m very keen to do it in Indonesia.
“I’ve had a couple of great weeks out here, and I’m looking forward to learning more about one of my countries of origin.
“In the past months over 100 agents contacted me. But when push came to shove, it was very difficult for me to get any offers in writing.”
Capped 30 times, Nainggolan has become the biggest-ever signing made by a club in Indonesia.

The football-mad south-east Asian country has only once reached a World Cup finals – in 1938, when known as the Dutch East Indies.
A Belgian title winner with Antwerp in 2022, Nainggolan will combine his playing career with promoting Indonesia as a travel destination.
His new Jakarta-based club plays at a 30,000-capacity stadium and goes by the full name Bhayangkara Presisi Indonesia FC.
Nainggolan is known for his career in which he enjoyed success in Italy’s Serie A.
He won the league in 2021 as part of Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan team.
During his time at SPAL, he admitted that he was playing for “peanuts”.
    DRIVING BAN
His time at Antwerp was full of controversy as he first lost his licence for drink-driving and speeding, just ONE week into his Antwerp career.
And then he was suspended indefinitely for smoking an e-cigarette on the bench.
He ended up being forced to work with the youth team before leaving by mutual consent.
Nainggolan has previously claimed that he could down 20 shots the night before a match and still play the same.
His career could have taken a different path in 2017 as he rejected moves to Chelsea and Manchester United.
In 2018, he told ESPN FC. “I am the kind of person who above all needs to live well and be at a club which plays to win, or where I am happy with my life.
“In Italy, you live really well – I like the culture and way of life here.
“Chelsea offered me more money [while at Roma in 2017] and they are a big club, yes.
“But I’m interested in waking up in the morning in a place where I feel good and, at the age of 29, winning back all the respect I’d worked 12 years to earn in Italy was not for me.
“There are lots of components – lots to evaluate.
“I stayed in Italy, with Roma, because I wanted to end in the best way possible. There was Manchester too.
“There were many things that I was not interested in at all.

Why Manuel Neuer was Man Utd’s unlikely hero as he keeps them in Champions League after Galatasaray nightmare

MANUEL NEUER was Manchester United’s unlikely hero as he kept them in the Champions League – for now. United twice led Galatasaray, where they needed a win to leave their Champions League fate in their own hands.

But twice they were pegged back in what ended in a six-goal 3-3 thriller in Istanbul.
It left them rock bottom of the group and needing Bayern to avoid a shock defeat at home to Copenhagen.
But the Germans – who already progressed top of the table – almost suffered a shock loss in the dying embers of the match.
Mohamed Elyounoussi’s towering header forced the German No1 to get down low to his left side.

And he did excellently well to then save the rebound effort and help Bayern clear the ball to safety.
It means United still have a glimmer of hope in qualification when Thomas Tuchel’s side travel to Old Trafford.
They will need a win and for Copenhagen and Galatasaray to draw in order to progress to the knockout stages.
So with United’s chances just about alive, fans were quick to thank stopper Neuer for his heroics.

Man Utd player ratings: Onana has night to forget but Fernandes scores cracker and almost nets winner vs Galatasaray

MANCHESTER UNITED’S Champions League campaign has been left hanging by a thread after a six-goal thriller in Turkey. Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay and Hakim Ziyech were all on the scoresheet.
Muhammed Kerem Akturkoglu made it 3-3Credit: Reuters
But it was sub Muhammed Kerem Akturkoglu’s 71st minute leveller to make it 3-3 which proved decisive.
Here is how Neil Custis rated United’s players from Istanbul.
    ANDRE ONANA – 4
The Cameroon international had a night to forget with him at fault for both of Galatasaray’s first two goals.
The decision to replace David De Gea with the former Inter Milan goalkeeper continues to look flawed.

    AARON WAN-BISSAKA – 6
Showed his influence going forward once more by setting up Scott McTominay to make it 3-1.
    HARRY MAGUIRE – 6
It seems that having the captaincy taken from him has released a huge burden on his shoulders and is back to his best form.

    VICTOR LINDELOF – 6
You would not have thought at the start of the season that he and Maguire would be the centre-back pairing to be relied on now, but both deserve their places.
    LUKE SHAW – 6
His return has been more than welcome bringing authority to that left back position once again but did not have his usual influence further upfield.

    SCOTT MCTOMINAY – 6
Having looked like he was on his way out of Old Trafford in the summer he has become a consistent regular in the team once more.

    SOFYAN AMRABAT – 6
Solid enough as a shield in front of the back four but an early yellow card left him walking a tightrope and no doubt lead to his substitution early in the second-half.
    ANTONY – 7
This was more like it from the former Ajax winger as he played on the front foot from the start of the game but faded in the second period.
    BRUNO FERNANDES – 8
Hit an absolute cracker to put United 2-0 up in a fine first half performance and almost won it late on when he rattled the woodwork with another long range effort.
Bruno Fernandes scored a screamerCredit: AFP

    ALEJANDRO GARNACHO – 7
Fernandes said before the game he hoped for another piece of magic from the teenager after his overhead kick at the weekend and the Argentine duly delivered by blasting the opener into the near top corner.
    RASMUS HOJLUND – 6
Did plenty of running once again but he just does not get enough chances and work still needs to be done on the link up play with him.
    SUBSTITUTES
KOBBIE MAINOO: (On for Amrabat 57) – 5
Unfortunate not to start. Lost his man though as Galatasaray levelled through Kerem Akturkoglu.
ANTHONY MARTIAL (On for Hojlund 58) – 5
Failed to make an impression up front as Galatasaray got back into the game.
    DIOGO DALOT (On for Wan-Bissaka 78) – 6
Almost made an immediate impression as he got forward and got a shot on goal.

FACUNDO PELLISTRI: (On for Garnacho 78) – 6
Nearly won it for United when he wriggled into the box only to shoot over the bar.

Man Utd given frightening reception at Galatasaray as fans once again display huge ‘Welcome To Hell’ sign

MANCHESTER UNITED were given a frightening reception at Galatasaray as fans displayed a huge “Welcome To Hell” sign. The Turkish giants are notorious for their hostile treatment of visitors to RAMS Park.

And United’s Champions League trip was no different as the welcome to hell warning lit up in Galatasaray colours.
The Turk side infamously offered a similar welcome when the Red Devils visited in 1993.
Galatasaray had shown they were no pushovers with a 3-3 first-leg draw at Old Trafford a fortnight earlier and an ominous message from manager Reiner Hollmann.
Vowing “they’ll be waiting for you,” for the return leg was a huge understatement.

The “Welcome to Hell” banners at Istanbul airport were more accurate.
United’s coach was pelted with missiles en route to their plush hotel and even the walk to reception was menacing.
Once there, a young bell boy drew a finger across his throat. United were not short of battle-hardened warriors, either.
Steve Bruce, Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, Paul Ince, Eric Cantona and Peter Schmeichel were all in the side.

But nothing they had faced before came close to the Ali Sami Yen Stadium.
The match itself was a drab 0-0, which KO’d United on away goals.
Erik ten Hag’s side needed a win in Turkey to guarantee qualification into the knockout stages.
And Alejandro Garnacho got United off to a flyer by opening the score on 11 minutes with Bruno Fernandes soon doubling the lead.
But former Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech pulled one back on the half hour mark with a sublime curling free kick.
Scott McTominay made it 3-1 on 55 minutes but another Ziyech goal again tightened the score leading to a nervy last half hour.
And the pressure proved to much for United as Muhammed Kerem Akturkoglu made it 3-3 with the game ending in a six-goal thriller.

Man Utd make bold kit change not seen since 1957 as Erik ten Hag’s side create history against Galatasaray

United typically pair their white away strip with white shorts but wanted to avoid a potential clash with Galatasaray.
The Turkish giants traditionally wear white shorts alongside their red and orange mixed shirts.
Erik ten Hag’s side were forced to change their usual strip when Galatasaray visited Old Trafford in September.
United swapped their white shorts for black on that occasion as the Turks wore an all-white kit.

Earlier in the day, the match looked at risk of being postponed as torrential rain threatened to waterlog the pitch.
However the playing surface passed a pre-match check and the players did not have any problems once play got underway.
Earlier in the day, Man Utd’s U19s were beaten by Galatasaray in a deluge.
United are looking for a victory which would almost certainly leave their fate in their own hands when they host Bayern Munich at Old Trafford in two weeks.

Man Utd fans moan ‘it seems Ten Hag doesn’t want Champions League anymore’ after seeing lineup to face Galatasaray

And despite travelling with the squad to Turkey, the midfielder was replaced by Sofyan Amrabat which caused anger amongst fans.
One said: “No Kobbie mainoo in the starting lineup???”

And with such difficult playing conditions, some concluded that was the reason Mainoo was benched.

One said: “I would like to think Kobbie Mainoo drops to the bench to prevent the risk of his injury flaring back up after just one start.
“That pitch is a minefield for injuries. I’d expect him to be back in for the trip to Newcastle.”
Another argued: “This is not a pitch for Mainoo to play on. Sensible decision.”
One claimed: “Reckon if the pitch wasn’t butchered then maybe Mainoo would’ve started.
“This line-up seems like a reaction to the conditions and so is well equipped for direct football.” More

Mason Greenwood’s ex-teammates at Man Utd share public support for first time after stunning long-range goal for Getafe

MASON Greenwood’s former Manchester United teammates have lent their support to the player on his Instagram for the first time since his Spanish move.Greenwood made a high-profile move to the Getafe FC in September after United were set to bring him back into the team, but decided to loan the player after fan pressure.

Comments by the players have been left on an Instagram video posted by the official Getafe FC account.
The video shows Greenwood scoring Saturday’s wonder strike against Almeria, when he slotted the ball in the corner from the edge of the box.
Greenwood has the comments turned off on his own personal posts, but he has also reposted his club’s short clip of his strike where the comments remain on.
Amad Diallo, the 21-year-old United right midfielder from Ivory Coast was one of Greenwood’s former teammates to comment.

“Love this, bro,” he said, along with a red love heart emoji.
Diallo has taken to Instagram before to support Greenwood. In September he posted an image of himself watching Getafe along with two love hearts, the Mirror reports.
Like Greenwood, he has also spent time off the pitch, but for injury reasons instead.
Nottingham Forest forward Anthony Elanga also commented, saying “Que golazo,” or ‘What a goal’ with a love heart eyes emoji to his former United teammate.

Greenwood has had a difficult relationship with United as intense fan pressure prevented him from returning for the club and his teammates didn’t want him back either.
In February, Greenwood purged his Instagram of 100 posts as he began his return to professional football.
Many of the other comments left called for Greenwood to return to Old Trafford.
But a report says that Getafe FC could be keen to extend their contract with the Brit if he continues to play well as English scouts also sit in the stands.
A minority of comments on the post also referred to what had led to Greenwood’s shift to the Spanish capital – a rape charge in October 2022.
Greenwood was taken off the United pitch after he was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour in January 2022.
    Greenwood denied all the charges.
Key witnesses eventually withdrew from the case and the Crown Prosecution Service announced in February 2023 it had discontinued the charges.
    Read More on The Sun
Manchester United then started their own internal investigation with the plan to bring Greenwood back into the team.
That investigation ended in August, but after huge fan pressure and internal backlash, Greenwood was sent to the La Liga side on a season-long loan.

Erik ten Hag’s troops are ROCK BOTTOM of Group A with just three points to their name after four matches, although they are just a solitary point behind second and third-placed FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray.
Defeat at the notoriously hostile Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi stadium will end United’s slim hopes of reaching the knockout stages and leave them battling for a Europa League place.
And former Red Devil Berbatov insists his old side’s predicament is all of their own doing.
He told Betfair: “The chances are still there for United to qualify – they can do it.

“It depends on the other games as well. It’s going to be tough for sure because United have put themselves in that position.
“Now, they need to get out of this position and this goes by taking points from Galatasaray, away, which is not an easy thing to do and Bayern Munich, it’s Bayern Munich. So, it’s very difficult.
‌”United need to get a good result at Galatasaray.”
Bulgarian Berbatov is adamant Ten Hag’s hot and cold charges need to put the hostile atmosphere they’ll experience to the back of their minds as soon as they step out on the pitch.

He said: “With United’s current form, the chances are there for them.
“Every game is different, especially when you go to Galatasaray – they have good players and crazy fans.
“But forget that when you step on the pitch, try to concentrate and know you have good players, hungry players coming into the team full of confidence and try to mix it with experience.
“Try to attack and score goals and don’t make f***ing stupid mistakes.
‌”I remember playing against Besiktas for Spurs at the old Inonu Stadium – we won 2-0 – but Robbie Keane was two or three metres from me, I was screaming loudly to try to make him hear me, and he couldn’t hear.
‌”The stadium was like an earthquake. They were passionate and supported their team.
“Galatasaray get even more passionate when a big team like United come to their ground, so that’s why I’m expecting a crazy atmosphere.”
Ten Hag knows his troops will walk into a cauldron this evening but is confident they’ll be able to handle the fiery atmosphere and get a result.
The Dutchman said: “We know we can [win away in Europe] and we are confident.
