But there was a break clause in the loan agreement which means United could have sent him back in January.
However it appears Reguilon will be needed as cover for Luke Shaw for several more weeks as Malacia is some way off fitness.
Malacia, 24, underwent surgery on a knee injury in the summer and it was hoped the Dutchman would already be back in action.
But the club revealed he suffered a setback in his rehabilitation which required more surgery – he is now not expected back until the new year.

Malacia is continuing his recovery at Carrington but will take a few more weeks to get back to full fitness.
Shaw has just returned from several months out so Reguilon will likely be kept as a precaution, as Erik ten Hag will want to avoid a repeat of playing players like Sofyan Amrabat out of position.
United issued an update on Malacia yesterday that read: “Tyrell Malacia is on course to return to action early next year, as he recovers from a knee injury.
“The Dutch left-back has not played so far this season, following an operation over the summer.

And the mega-rich businessman will turn to his chief lieutenant Sir Dave Brailsford in a bid to turn the club around.
According to The Mirror, Brailsford is taking a psychology-based approach alongside therapist Steve Peters at Team Sky.
And it could prove to benefit squad outcast Sancho, who has been exiled from the first team since September.
The 23-year-old winger was fuming after being dropped for United’s 3-1 loss to Arsenal, which Erik ten Hag put down to performances in training.

Sancho sensationally spoke out on social media to claim he was being used as a “scapegoat”.
And after refusing to apologise to his manager for the online outburst, Sancho has been out of the fold ever since.
He has been banished from first-team training since September and instead trains with United’s academy teams.
But Ratcliffe is believed to be focussed on bringing in more homegrown players.

That could offer Sancho his route back into the side.
But the winger has been linked with a January move away from Manchester, with a move to Saudi Arabia touted.
Al-Hilal are the latest to be interested in Sancho as they look to replace injured Brazil superstar Neymar.

One of the shining lights in a dismal season for Ten Hag has been the emergence of midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.
The 18-year-old has shown composure and skill well beyond his years, which former United defender Rio Ferdinand has likened to a young Cesc Fabregas.
He said on his Vibe with Five podcast: “I thought about it the other day, 18-year-olds coming into the first team in the Premier League who gave performances like that… [Cesc] Fabregas?
“I’m not saying he [Mainoo] is as good as these guys, there have been more explosive but I’m talking about composure.

    “This was a crazy performance.”
Mainoo had the Old Trafford faithful – including Ferdinand – waxing lyrical with his display in United’s 3-0 win over Everton last weekend.
He said: “At 18 years old, especially centre midfield, very rarely do you see a composed performance like that.
“Away from home, it’s crash, bang, wallop at Everton at Goodison under the circumstances they went there.

“The way he was dropping in between the centre-backs, not even getting it and bopping it one or two touches.
“He was getting it, taking touches, drifting by people or away from people, away from the challenge and the press, and then releasing it.
“That’s what these centre-backs and goalkeeper have been waiting for – someone who can alleviate that pressure and beat that press.”
Ten Hag has been thoroughly impressed by Mainoo’s displays in his maiden season in the first team but has warned the teen to not allow the high praise he’s receiving get to his head and to keep his feet on the ground.
The Dutchman said: “We are very pleased with the performance [at Everton], but it’s one performance and you have to do it on a consistent basis.
“Kobbie is so mature, [but] you are only good as your last game.
“Keep your focus on the game. You have to focus on your game, and your performance and get the right levels in.
“When we observe, if a player is moving away from football and getting distracted, we will tell them.”
Mainoo and his United team-mates will be back in action on Saturday evening, travelling to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle.

Andre Onana fearing for his place at Man Utd and goalkeeper could pull out of AFCON to protect number one spot

CALAMITY GOALKEEPER Andre Onana could pull out of the African Cup of Nations to protect his Manchester United number one spot.Onana was expected to be missing in the New Year having returned to the international fold with Cameroon.

But with Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayinider waiting in the wings having signed for the United in the summer, Onana fears he might lose his place long term.
Onana, 27, surprised United boss Erik Ten Hag by deciding to return to international football this season having retired after walking out of Cameroon’s World Cup camp a year ago.
He has since patched up his differences with coach Rigobert Song and made three appearances helping them to qualify for the AFCON Finals.
They run from January 13 to February 11 and could mean Onana missing up to six games.

But his club place is already under threat after a disastrous display in Istanbul when he was at fault for two goals in a 3-3 draw with Galatasaray.
Ominously for Onana, after the game Ten Hag made it clear that Bayindir will get his chance soon.
Ten Hag said: “We are pleased with the goalkeeping group. They have to push each other.
“We are very pleased with Altay who is doing very well, he just has to be patient.

“If he works well and continues his progress, he will get his chance and will have to take it.”
He may get it even before the AFCON finals given Onana’s form as he let in two weak Hakim Ziyech free kicks as United twice surrendered a two-goal lead.
It has left their hopes of qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League hanging by a thread.
They now need to beat table toppers Bayern Munich in their final Group A game and hope that Galatasaray and Copenhagen draw to go through.
Ten Hag’s side have made a mess of a group they should have eased through.
They have scored nine goals away from home in three games but only earned one point on their travels and have four in all as they sit bottom of their group.
Much has been down to the erratic form of Onana who was brought in for £47.2million to replace long-standing number one David De Gea.
A number of players were unhappy to see De Gea go with the Spaniard still without a club since leaving Old Trafford.

Onana was supposedly brought in for his superior distribution skills with Ten Hag wanting to play the ball out from the back more.
The problem is he is nowhere near as good as De Gea at doing the main goalkeeper’s job – which is keeping the ball out of the back of the net.
