But the 109-cap Mexico international has not played since damaging the ACL on his right knee against Real Salt Lake in the MLS five months ago.
Now Galaxy are making the ex-Bayer Leverkusen star a free agent after his contract expired.
Hernandez had one of the Premier League’s best goals-per-minute ratios during his United days.
But he was frustrated by his lack of starts and, after a loan spell with Real Madrid, he departed Old Trafford eight years ago.

Now he’s bowing out at Galaxy after 82 games, with just nine of those appearances from the bench – notching 39 goals and six assists.
But judging by an Instagram post, Hernandez is determined to turn misfortune to his advantage.
The former Sevilla hitman wrote: “Life becomes exciting when you allow yourself to change and evolve to new challenges.
“Thanks to everyone who was involved in my journey these 4 years. Thank you for everything @lagalaxy.”

Man City ‘plot shock transfer raid on bitter rivals Man Utd’ as fans fume ‘fold the club if this happens’

FourFourTwo claim Pep Guardiola’s Treble winners are keen on the starlet – one of the hottest prospects for years from the Old Trafford academy.
Mainoo had fans raving in pre-season with his mature displays and all-round class, before an ankle injury ruled him out until last month.
And as Erik ten Hag’s men flounder on all fronts this term, many supporters want the England Under-19 ace fast-tracked into the first team.
But it’s claimed City are contemplating an approach that would highlight the current gulf between the two clubs.

Etihad chiefs have been focusing more on bringing through youngsters, whereas United appear close to disarray on and off the field ahead of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s planned £245m investment.
But it’s unclear if any bid from City for Mainoo would get off the ground.
Ten Hag rates him highly and United would surely be sensitive to selling such a gem to their closest and fiercest rivals.
United fans reacted to the speculation over Mainoo with a mixture of anger and scepticism.

One posted: “If they’re gonna take Mainoo I want Foden and Haaland in return.”
Another wrote, “Why tf would he go there?”.
An an even more confident supporter said: “I don’t think United will ever sell, lmao.”
Some supporters pleaded for Mainoo to be “given a big run of games” as anchorman Casemiro now faces several weeks out with a hamstring injury.
And one fan called for a “£1billion release clause please” to kill off any interest from City.
But with United struggling in the Champions League and Prem, then thumped 3-0 by Newcastle in the Carabao Cup, another observer said of Mainoo: “If he has ambition he will leave.” More

How West Ham could line up after January transfer window with new striker & Man Utd duo as Sheikh Jassim lines up bid

WEST HAM could have a very different look in January as they eye up a new striker and a Manchester United duo.Qatari royal Sheikh Jassim is reportedly ready to purchase a stake in the Hammers after being snubbed by United.

The Sheikh wanted a complete £5billion or the Red Devils, with the Glazers instead preferring to sell a smaller stake to Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
And some of that money could now find its way to East London instead.
That means manager David Moyes could be for a very busy January transfer window.
Top of the Scotsman’s list is a new striker, with Danny Ings is yet to prove to be of any competition to No9 Michail Antonio.

Mexican hot-shot Santiago Gimenez may be the man to change that, following his remarkable goal-scoring form for Feyenoord.
Tottenham, Arsenal, Newcastle, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus, Napoli, Lazio, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid all have their eyes on the 22-year-old.
And there is a valid reason for that as so far this term he has scored 15 times in 11 outings in all competitions.
The East London side did spark interest in the striker during the summer, but Gimenez ended up securing a long-term deal with the Eredivisie side until 2027.

West Ham are in line to make a move on Manchester United duo Anthony Martial and Harry MaguireCredit: Reuters
That means he will not come cheap in the new year, as the Rotterdam club have already valued their frontman at £40million.
And Moyes could move for United’s Anthony Martial if a deal for Gimenez cannot be done.
The Frenchman, still only 27, is in desperate need of a career lifeline.
The injury-plagued striker has not completed a full Premier League game since January 2021.
But Martial’s experience, with over 300 games for United, could be a useful asset to Moyes, alongside right winger Jarrod Bowen.
And Martial could not be the only out-of-favour Red Devil moving to the London Stadium, with the Hammers ready to try again for Harry Maguire.
The Hammers offered £20m for the former United captain in the summer, but saw their bid rejected by the player.
However, Maguire has since hinted that he could leave in January ahead of Euro 2024 if he continues to receive limited game time.
England stalwart Maguire’s experience would certainly be beneficial to Nayef Aguerd in the West Ham backline.

But a cheaper option would be Club America’s Uruguay centre-back Sebastian Caceres.
The Hammers could seal a deal with the 24-year-old in January for as little as £6million.

And it’s since transpired that the former Real Madrid man has suffered a hamstring injury.
A club statement read: “Casemiro will be out for several weeks due to a hamstring injury suffered during our Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle United on Wednesday.
“The Brazilian midfielder was withdrawn at half-time due to the issue, and subsequent assessment has revealed a strain that will keep him out for a number of weeks.”
Under-pressure Red Devils boss Ten Hag wasn’t optimistic about the Brazil international being fit for Saturday’s trip to Fulham.
The Dutchman said in his post-match press conference: “He was injured.
“Just before half-time, he got an injury. That’s why we had to take him off.”
When pressed further on a return date, he said: “I can’t give an answer on that.
“We have to wait 24 hours, but I think definitely for Saturday, he is out.”

Five-time Champions League winner Casemiro has struggled this season.
He’s looked a shell of the player who bossed Real Madrid’s midfield, being caught out of position on several occasions and letting opposition players ghost past him far too easily.

Casemiro’s loss could be the gain of 18-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who impressed during pre-season.
United were dumped out of the Carabao Cup thanks to an embarrassing 3-0 defeat to high-flying Newcastle at Old Trafford.
Defeat to the Magpies was the club’s EIGHTH loss in 15 matches so far this season.
Pressure is starting to mount on Ten Hag, who is adamant he can turn the team’s fortunes around.
He said: “I am a fighter and I know it is not always going to go up and we have a lot of setbacks this season.
“But also you have to deal with it and that is never an excuse.

“I have said that before. I know when there are setbacks but even then you have to get results. Sunday [and] tonight was far from that.

Rasmus Hojlund has scored three goals in Europe since his blockbuster summer arrival but it is understood the club are keen to sign a striker to support the young Dane.
It is felt there is too much of a burden on Hojlund’s young shoulders to score goals, and United feel he could learn from playing alongside an experienced frontman.
According to the Daily Mail, United already have several targets in mind who they could try to sign when the transfer window re-opens.
One is long-term target – Napoli striker Victor Osimhen who finished as Serie A’s top goalscorer last season.

Napoli slapped a huge asking price on the Nigerian in the summer but a recent fallout means they may now be more willing to listen to offers.
If not, the Red Devils could splash out on Brentford star Ivan Toney, who will be free from his gambling ban.
However recent reports claim the Bees could demand £100million to let the England international leave.
And with United also keen to sign a world class centre-back like Edmond Tapsoba or Jean-Clair Todibo, they could decide to bring in a striker on a budget.

Man Utd have two ‘potential replacements’ in mind with Ten Hag ‘on thin ice’ according to ‘senior source’ at club

MANCHESTER UNITED have two potential alternatives in mind to replace manager Erik ten Hag who is “on thin ice”, reports suggest.Ten Hag has overseen United’s worst start to a season in 61 years with his team languishing in eighth place after losing five out of their first 10 Premier League games, of which they have won the other half.

Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim is also a top target for Man UtdCredit: Reuters
According to The Times, a “senior source” believes the Red Devils’ two most recent heavy losses to Manchester City and Newcastle at Old Trafford have left the Dutch tactician at serious risk of being sacked.
That is why club chiefs are already thinking ahead and view Zinedine Zidane as well as Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim as potential replacements.
Zidane has been a free agent since 2021 after his second stint as Real Madrid manager came to an end following a staggering three Champions League triumphs across both tenures.
Amorim, on the other hand, is considered a rising star as he led Sporting to their first league title in 19 years in his first full season in charge two years ago.

However, there are major complications due to the club’s ongoing ownership saga.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe is still waiting to complete his 25 per cent purchase of the club, which could see him run all sporting matters.

Ratcliffe’s partial takeover could affect chief executive Richard Arnold’s position, and he will be needed if United decide to look for a new manager at this time.
The Red Devils have previously expressed confidence on Ten Hag and, according to Fabrizio Romano, club sources claim there have been no moves to replace him.

Sir Jim is said to be looking to make changes in other key positions, such as finding a new chief executive and sporting director as well as establishing a new football board.
However, there have been reports that the players are losing faith in Ten Hag.
Reports suggested there have been complaints regarding his tactics, which led to showdown talks in the dressing room after the loss to City, and training methods, which some feel have led to injuries. More

Man Utd had more players wearing CAPTAIN’S ARMBAND than they had shots on target against Newcastle

MANCHESTER UNITED had more skippers than shots on targets in their Carabao Cup humbling against Newcastle – as sorry stats pile up for Erik ten Hag.The Red Devils manager insists he is still “confident” he can turn United around but admits the club are in a “bad place”.

And woeful statistics have engulfed Ten Hag’s squad in the past week.
Three United players wore the captain’s armband in Wednesday’s 3-0 humiliation – one more than the team’s total number of efforts on target.
First Casemiro skippered the Red Devils but went off injured at the break.
Victor Lindelof then took the band – until passing it to Bruno Fernandes when the midfielder came on for the final 25 minutes.

Throughout the tie, however, United were armed but far from dangerous as Newcastle strolled into the quarter-finals.
The Red Devils rarely threatened the injury-hit Magpies, firing ten efforts off-target.
And although the stat about skippers outnumbering on-target shots is more quirky than damning, it typifies the disarray at Old Trafford.
Fans called it “shocking” – but it comes amid a string of other facts and figures far more damaging to Ten Hag’s chances of staying in charge.

Sunday’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City took the Red Devils to 34 home Premier League defeats in ten years – the same number as Sir Alex Ferguson suffered in his whole reign from 1986 to 2013.
And the midweek Carabao Cup exit meant United have lost two home games in a row by three goals or more for the first time since 1962.
It’s also the first time the Red Devils have been defeated in five of their first ten home matches since 1930-31.
Ten Hag said: “I take responsibility for it. It is my team and they are not performing.
“I understand when the results are not there it is logical they (fans)  are questioning that.
“But I am a fighter. I see it as a challenge.” More

‘There are a lot of fall-outs behind the scenes’ at Man Utd says Shay Given who sees ‘divide’ between Ten Hag and stars

FORMER Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given said that Manchester United’s problems extend beyond the field following their 3-0 defeat to Newcastle last night. He believes there is a “real divide” between the players and Erik Ten Hag as he delivered his analysis on the heavy defeat.
Things are beginning to look ominous for Ten Hag at UnitedCredit: Alamy
The result was United’s second consecutive 3-0 loss at home after being beaten by Manchester City at the weekend.
There is a growing feeling that Ten Hag has lost the dressing room at United, with his treatment of Jadon Sancho continuing to dominate conversation.
The winger continues to be exiled from the squad until he apologises to the manager, but that position has been undermined by Ten Hag continuing to play the likes of Antony.
Raphael Varane’s absence from the Manchester derby first XI and complete omission from the squad yesterday is another talking point, with some claiming the Frenchmen is the “new scapegoat”.

Given told Sky Sports after the match: “It feels there is a real divide, in my opinion, between the players and the manager.
“I think there are a lot of fall outs behind the scenes, that maybe we don’t hear about.
“Varane was missing tonight and in the derby, ill, Sancho is out of the picture and Antony has had his issues.
“At the end of any managerial reign at any club, there seems to be a disbelief.

“Players have to take responsibility, that’s their job when you cross the white line.
“But it seems at the end of someone’s tether that players, I don’t want to say down tools, but there is disconnection.
“Losing the derby at the weekend and then losing here tonight, the game was over after an hour.”
Former Manchester United and Newcastle striker Andy Cole said the club needs to stick together in the midst of defeat with the club now at a crossroads.
He told Sky Sports: “Losing Sunday and again this evening, the performance wasn’t good and Ten Hag knows that and appreciates that.
“He is talking about looking at himself, but the players need to look at themselves as once you go over the white line, it is not about the manager, it is about playing for each other.”
United have the chance to arrest their poor run of form since the international break when they travel to Craven Cottage to face Fulham this Saturday.
Another poor result could leave the manager in big trouble – with United ninth and eight points adrift of a Champions League spot. More
