      It’s reckoned the Aussie would love to boost his midfield and attacking options.
      But he is also prioritising a new defender amid doubts over Eric Dier’s future.
      And the Standard claims ‘Big Ange’ has identified Nice centre-back Todibo as his top target.
      The 23-year-old, once of Barcelona, has helped his side to second place in Ligue 1 with some fine performances.

      He has also become a regular at the back for Didier Deschamps’ France.
      And Nice are believed to only be holding out for a bargain £39million fee.

      But Todibo’s price tag and performances makes him the top choice right now.
      However, the Frenchman is wanted by Liverpool and Man United, who will not make things easy for Spurs.
      Todibo would also want guarantees of a regular starting spot, meaning one of Van de Ven or Romero would have to drop out of the XI.
      And he’s said to be comfortable at Nice until the summer as they mount a surprise title bid. More

      IT was the journey to Hell that still brings a shudder to those who set foot in the Ali Sami Yen inferno.The night which began with threats, descended into mayhem and madness and finished with the champions of England simply glad to escape in one piece.

      Manchester United had ended the 26-year title wait six months earlier. Now the target was to emulate the heroes of 1968 and conquer Europe, in its new guise as the Champions League.
      They didn’t get beyond the second round and three decades on November 3, 1993, still sends chills down many a Mancunian spine.
      Galatasaray had shown they were no pushovers with a 3-3 first-leg draw at Old Trafford a fortnight earlier and an ominous message from manager Reiner Hollmann.
      Vowing “they’ll be waiting for you,” for the return leg was a huge understatement. The “Welcome to Hell” banners at Istanbul airport were more accurate.

      United’s coach was pelted with missiles en route to their plush hotel and even the walk to reception was menacing. Once there, a young bell boy drew a finger across his throat.
      The Red Devils were not short of battle-hardened warriors. Steve Bruce, Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, Paul Ince, Eric Cantona and Peter Schmeichel were all in the side.
      But nothing they had faced before came close to the Ali Sami Yen Stadium. The match itself was a drab 0-0, which KO’d United on away goals. Yet that didn’t tell half of it.

      Paul Parker had played in the biggest games of all, a World Cup semi-finalist with England. Little fazed a man raised in the East End — but that night did.
      Parker recalled: “We stayed in a lovely hotel on the river and everyone was fine. The morning of the match, it all changed.

      Cantona was hit with a police truncheon, Robson waded in to support and needed eight stitches in an elbow that was gashed when he was thrown against a metal hook on the wall.
      Even Sir Alex Ferguson had his jacket off ready to defend his boys. Security? They were more up for trouble than the fans.
      At 32, centre-back Bruce had been around the block more than most. Yet he had never seen anything like it — and never came close for the rest of his career.

      Bruce said: “It was pandemonium. The crowd was in hours before and never stopped. They were jumping up and down, screaming, the noise you wouldn’t believe.
      “It started when we got off the plane and followed us all the way to the hotel on the bus. It was not very pleasant!
      “When we came out of the tunnel it was another level and, for me, that is what pushed them over the line. It seemed all of Turkey wanted to beat us.
      “Then it all went off near the end with Eric, and then Robbo in the tunnel. Even Sir Alex had his jacket off ready.
      “He was saying to us, ‘None of my players have been fighting, have you?’ Then he went out and did the press conference. He always made it us against the world.
      “We left that night and I often say I don’t know how we got out of Istanbul in one piece. Probably because they beat us!”
      Fans even pelted the bus with stones and bricks. It was pure luck that no one was seriously injured.

      GARY PALLISTER knew Manchester United faced problems at Galatasaray when a hotel worker greeted him with a throat-slitting gesture.
      The former centre-back  still winces at memories of the ‘Welcome to Hell’ match 30 years ago.
      Pallister, 58, said: “I was picking up my bag from  the coach and walking through by myself.
      “It was a beautiful place, a stunning hotel on the Bosphorus Strait which used to be a  Prince’s palace, we were told.
      “Most of the lads are  20-30 yards ahead of me and I walk past this  bellboy pushing a trolley that carries suitcases.
      “As I’m walking past him, I just said, ‘Afternoon’ and he went like that (throat-slit gesture).
      “I just carried on walking but was like, ‘Wow, this is  different’.”
      Once inside their rooms, the unsettling tactics went on. Pallister added: “Brian McClair said he had banging on his ceiling.
      “So him and Jim McGregor, our physio, went upstairs and found a cleaner sat there  banging.
      “He just looked at them and walked off.”

      Parker added: “We had to drive through masses of people, they were throwing all sorts at us and there was no security.
      “We were kept in the coach on the runway for ages.”
      Fergie vowed never to return — but drew Galatasaray again in the next year’s groups, that time  a 0-0 passed without incident.
      Tomorrow United visit the Turks again — albeit in their new Rams Park home — and must win to keep their Euro dream alive.
      Galatasaray beat them 3-2 at Old Trafford in October and Parker added: “If Galatasaray do the double over them, those players will become immortal.
      “It isn’t as nasty as when we went but it won’t be any easier.” More

      Man Utd want Chelsea flop Timo Werner in shock January transfer but stunned fans say ‘tell me this is a joke’

      MANCHESTER UNITED have inquired about signing former Chelsea forward Timo Werner, according to shock reports in Germany. Erik ten Hag is in the market for striking reinforcements with £72million summer signing Rasmus Hojlund still without a Premier League goal.

      And according to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, RB Leipzig’s Werner is on the Old Trafford boss’ wishlist.
      It is claimed United have already asked Leipzig about the striker’s availability, but formal negotiations have yet to take place.
      Werner signed for Chelsea in 2020 for £53million and he struggled during his two years in West London.
      He managed only 23 goals in 89 matches – but did help the Blues to the Champions League trophy in 2021.

      Werner was sold back to Leipzig in the summer of 2022 for £23.5m and he notched 16 goals in his 40 games.
      But the attacker – who can play centrally or out wide – has scored just twice this term after 13 matches in all competitions.
      The 27-year-old is believed to be unsettled again in the Bundesliga, leading to rumours of a return to the Premier League.
      Werner is understood to be ready to see out the remainder of the season but the likes of West Ham and Fulham have also been linked.

      Real Madrid are also apparently monitoring but now United are the latest big name side to register an interest in Werner – much to the shock of fans.
      One disappointed Red Devils fan wrote: “I’m not a fan of this.”

      However, given United’s struggles in front of goal this season, others were willing to give Werner a chance.
      One argued: “I’d take him all day.”
      A second agreed: “I’d take this happily.”
      United are in desperate need of goals having scored only 16 so far in 13 Prem games.
      Hojlund is goalless domestically, despite five goals in the Champions League, with Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes instead United’s top league scorers with only three each.
      Marcus Rashford is the only other player with more than one.

      Major hint Mason Greenwood will stay at Getafe after loan spell ends as ex-Man Utd striker impresses on the pitch

      MASON Greenwood’s future could be in Spain as the former United striker looks to be setting down roots in the capital. The striker, 22, has netted four times in 11 matches since joining Getafe on loan, including a wonder strike against Almeria on Saturday.

      In what could be a major hint about where Greenwood’s future lies, the forward has a Spanish teacher.
      A senior source at the club, speaking on anonymity to The Athletic, said that if Greenwood continues on his current form then the Spanish club would look to discuss his future staying in Madrid.
      After coming off the bench in three of his first four games Greenwood is now a starting player.
      When Greenwood first arrived at the club at the start of September he hadn’t played first-team football in 18 months.

      Greenwood was taken off the United pitch after he was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour in January 2022.
      Greenwood denied all the charges.
      Key witnesses eventually withdrew from the case and the Crown Prosecution Service announced in February 2023 it had discontinued the charges.
      Manchester United then started their own internal investigation with the plan to bring Greenwood back into the team.

      That investigation ended in August, but after huge fan pressure and internal backlash, Greenwood was sent to the La Liga side on a season-long loan.
      A cloud hung over Greenwood and whether he would have the mental strength or physical fitness to get back to top-flight football.
      Rival fans, such as those from Osasuna and Athletic Bilbao, have sledged Greenwood on the pitch with whistles and shouts of, “Greenwood, die!”
      Decision-makers at Getafe don’t think he will reach peak fitness again until January, but Saturday’s screamer from the edge of the box suggests he is back on his way.
      He has also begun to integrate with Spanish life and is happy in Madrid with his partner and daughter, as well as with the weather, food and house, The Athletic reports.
      He is also gradually catching on to the jokes of his Spanish and Argentine teammates with the help of a Spanish teacher, the Athletic reported.
      But, a spanner in the works of Greenwood’s footballing redemption could be United’s ownership drama.
      With British chemical multinational INEOS buying into the storied club, they could see Greenwood as a liability and see to trade him away properly.
      Greenwood’s contract at United goes for another two years, with an option to extend for another year.
      But, playing away from the most intense scrutiny of the footballing press, Greenwood’s future might just again depend on how well he plays.

      Andre Onana close to becoming Dream Team’s best goalkeeper but is Manchester United’s form a house of cards?

      MANCHESTER UNITED are the most in-form team in the Premier League.Just let that percolate for a moment.
      Erik ten Hag’s side have won five of their last six league games and now find themselves sixth in the table, just two points behind Tottenham.

      Not even the most partisan supporter would doubt that the Red Devils’ recent performances have not been as encouraging as the results suggest.
      Sunday’s win at Goodison Park being a prime example.
      The visitors took all three points via a 3-0 win over Everton when all was said and done with Alejandro Garnacho (£2.4m) scoring a Goal of the Season contender inside three minutes.
      However, Man United were also reliant on the Toffees’ wastefulness to some degree as the hosts were on top for long passages of the match.
      In fairness, Andre Onana (£3.8m) played his part between the sticks with some notable saves to come away with his seventh clean sheet of the season in all competitions.
      Incredibly, no goalkeeper has more clean sheets in 2023/24, a remarkable statistic given the Cameroon international’s shaky individual form throughout the first two months of the campaign.

      Naturally, this steady accumulation of clean sheets has translated to Dream Team success.

      Improbably, Onana now has 86 points to his name and is just three behind leading keeper Nick Pope (£4.2m).
      Backing the ex-Inter custodian appeared fraught with danger but gaffers who rolled the dice have been handsomely rewarded of late.
      The question now is whether the points will continue to flow for Onana and company or if United’s current form is build on a house of cards that could tumble any moment?
      Their league results have been superb recently but Ten Hag’s side capitulated against Galatasaray and Copenhagen in the Champions League.
      They were thoroughly beaten by a third-string Newcastle outfit in the Carabao Cup and, in their one league defeat since the start of October, they were comprehensively outclassed by Manchester City.
      Not only that, the nature of their wins have not been entirely convincing.
      Scott McTominay (£2.7m) popped up with an unlikely brace in stoppage time to get the job done at home to Brentford, a rare Diogo Dalot (£3.5m) goal proved to be enough in a sloppy showing at Sheffield United, a drab affair at Fulham was settled by a comedic stoppage-time winner from Bruno Fernandes (£5.7m), and Victor Lindelof (£2.4m) was the surprise hero at home to Luton in a relatively even contest before the international break.

      Man United fans are well within their rights to celebrate victories however they come – that’s football – but Dream Team bosses should consider whether this is truly a team destined for extended success.
      In 13 league games, Onana and friends have allowed their opponents 21.2 expected goals (xG) – only six Premier League clubs have conceded more this season.
      This suggests that United have been very fortunate not to have conceded more than 16 goals in the top flight – their Champions League results could be seen as a regression to the mean.

      In terms of xG generated in attack, United fair marginally better but their overall rank of 11th is still hugely underwhelming.
      It’s a tough one for Dream Team gaffers as Onana is currently producing healthy returns – he’s 18 points clear of the game’s third-best keeper, Alisson (£3.8m).
      And yet it wouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone if his side’s underlying numbers caught up with them in the coming weeks.
      United face Newcastle, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Aston Villa before the turn of the year.

      MANCHESTER UNITED came into this game with Everton with several things against them.For starters, Erik ten Hag was forced to watch on from the stands in a tweed Baker Boy hat as he served a touchline ban for accumulating too many yellow cards.

      And he was joined there by 39,000 furious Evertonians who welcomed the teams onto the pitch by holding up pink placards accusing the Premier League of corruption.
      The Toffees booed the Premier League anthem before the game and were in fine voice as the game kicked off.
      But Alejandro Garnacho’s wonderful overhead kick in the third minute silenced the home fans – at least temporarily before they broke into choruses of “Premier League – corrupt as f**k”.
      A second half Marcus Rashford penalty awarded after VAR intervention put United into cruise control in the 56th minute before Martial made it 3-0 with a tidy finish.

      Took his penalty extremely well to score just his second Premier League goal of the season.

      His acrobatic bicycle kick is surely the goal of the season already and had Gary Neville saying it was the best goal he’d ever seen.

      IT’S generally accepted that to combat a hostile environment you require the coolness and wisdom of experience.  Not so for Manchester United, who overcame the sustained rage of Goodison Park thanks to the brilliance of teenagers Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

      As Evertonians vented their fury at an unprecedented ten-point deduction for breaching financial rules, 19-year-old Garnacho produced a stunning early bicycle kick which was not just a goal-of-the-season contender but one of the greatest strikes in Premier League history. 
      And 18-year-old midfielder Mainoo, making his full Premier League debut in a raucous bear-pit, produced a performance of uncommon composure, including a crucial goal-line clearance. 
      Marcus Rashford’s penalty and an Anthony Martial goal then eased United towards their biggest win of the season, and a third straight league success ahead of Wednesday’s critical Champions League visit to Galatasaray.    
      Hell hath no fury like a Scouser scorned and before their team’s first match since being hit with such a draconian punishment, Evertonians proved it.

      They staged protest marches, brandished pink cards claiming Premier League corruption and booed of the competition’s pre-match anthem as roars of defiance rang out from every side of Goodison. 
      The air-raid warning sounded before Everton’s Z Cars walk-on theme has been particularly apt since Sean Dyche took over, but more so than ever since the club were penalised for breaching profit and sustainability rules, plunging them into the relegation places despite six wins from nine matches in all competitions.
      In normal circumstances, Merseysiders against Mancs might have been motivation enough but now it was ‘us against the world’, with Everton raging against the machine. 
      Siege mentalities in football are often the products of a manager’s imagination but in this case Everton’s sense of victimisation, after a punishment widely felt to be disproportionate, was very real.

      Ten Hag welcomed back Luke Shaw from a lengthy injury but was still battered by injuries, the stricken Rasmus Hojlund replaced by Martial up front and Stockport lad Mainoo handed a first league start. 
      Inside three minutes, though, the din inside Goodison was temporarily silenced by United’s extraordinary opener. 
      Victor Lindelof picked out Rashford with an excellent diagonal pass and the England forward slipped the ball to Diogo Dalot on the overlap. 
      The full-back cut it back to Garnacho who back-pedalled and contorted himself in the air to let rip from 16 yards, the Argentinian’s shot flying past Jordan Pickford and crashing into the far corner of the net.
      It was similar, but technically even better, than Wayne Rooney’s famous strike in a Manchester derby.  
      After ten minutes, the Evertonians unleashed their fury with a co-ordinated pink-card display and chants of ‘Premier League, corrupt as f***’ before a volley of fireworks was detonated outside the stadium. 
      United were unperturbed, though, Shaw whistling a half-volley narrowly over from outside the area, Ashley Young booked for a second heavy challenge on Garnacho. 
      Ten Hag, banned from touchline and flat-capped in the stands, was looking content. 
      Abdoulaye Doucore followed Young into the book of ref John Brooks for complaining that Garnacho hadn’t been cautioned for kicking the ball away after a free-kick award.
      Then came a sustained spell of Everton pressure.
      First, Dominic Calvert-Lewin sent a free header straight at Andre Onana.

      Next, James Tarkowski’s long punt fell to Calvert-Lewin, whose shot was expertly pushed out by a tumbling Onana. 
      Dwight McNeil’s follow-up effort cannoned off Onana and Harry Maguire before Mainoo dived to hook it off the line to safety – a crucial intervention from a kid who was so polished throughout. 
      Then Doucoure skewed his shot wide after McNeil had squared to offer an excellent opportunity for an equaliser.  
      Before the break, Calvert-Lewin headed over from a Young cross and then made space for Idrissa Gueye, who fell as he shot wide. 
      United were rocked back on to the ropes but saved by the half-time bell. 
      And soon after the break, Evertonian howls of derision against officialdom increased in volume when VAR Chris Kavanagh awarded United a penalty. 
      Brooks initially booked Martial for a dive but Young had stuck a leg out to make contact, so Kavanagh sent the ref to his monitor and the decision was overturned. 
      Skipper Bruno Fernandes handed the ball to Rashford who crashed his spot-kick past England team-mate Pickford.
      Young escaped a second yellow for his offence and almost immediately Gueye rocketed a shot towards the top corner but Onana produced an outstanding save to push over.  
      Rashford, looking rejuvenated after slump in form, centred for Garnacho who shot into the side-netting. 
      Garnahco and Mainoo were then withdrawn on 72 minutes and soon it was 3-0 with a goal started and finished by Martial.
      First, the Frenchman picked out sub Facundo Pellistri, who squared for Fernandes to provide the cute angled pass for Martial to dink over Pickford for his ninth goal against Everton. 
      It was a United performance so cool, it made hell freeze over.
