Five things Man Utd must do to go from sleeping giants to Premier League dreamers as Ratcliffe prepares to take control

AS he wandered the corridors of Old Trafford, Sir Jim Ratcliffe was very careful not to betray any of his thoughts or plans for the future. He hid behind the fact his 25 per cent buy-in at Manchester United has not yet been fully ratified by the Premier League.

That is expected to happen in the next three to four weeks.
But he immediately has the final say on all aspects of the football side of the commercial monster that is this United.
You cannot help but feel he is buying himself some time to make a decision on Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag.
That must leave the Dutchman feeling much like a Ralf Rangnick-esque interim.
    READ MORE MAN UTD NEWS
And we all know how that quickly disintegrated as German Rangnick called for “heart surgery” to be performed on the club.
It would appear United are still on the waiting list for that operation.
They currently sit seventh in the Premier League, eight points off fourth-placed Arsenal having played a game more.
United’s next match is a week on Sunday, away to Eastleigh or Newport County in the FA Cup fourth round.

With Prem fixtures on the road at Wolves, Aston Villa and Luton, plus home clashes with West Ham and Fulham all before the end of February, there should be every chance to impress.
United beat the toughest of those opponents — Villa — at home on Boxing Day, fighting back from 2-0 after 26 minutes to win 3-2.
That was the first game after Ratcliffe’s £1.03billion purchase of a quarter of the club was announced.
SunSport revealed Ineos billionaire Sir Jim has already spoken with jobless Graham Potter, the former Chelsea and Brighton boss.
But what really needs to happen is for Ratcliffe to come out and give Ten Hag his full backing. Now.
The pair have already met and anyone who meets 53-year-old ETH cannot help but be impressed by him.
Former chief executive Richard Arnold and director of football John Murtough certainly were when they went to Amsterdam to meet the then Ajax boss as they searched for someone to succeed caretaker Rangnick.
None of the other candidates had done the research Ten Hag had on what was wrong with United — and what needed to be done to get the club back on track. Arnold and Murtough came out of the meeting feeling like two naughty schoolboys as he laid bare United’s failings.
Ten Hag has come under pressure during his time at Old TraffordCredit: Getty
But they were also convinced he was the new headmaster who would have the control Sir Alex Ferguson had.
That is something Fergie himself has privately claimed.
The control to get rid of Cristiano Ronaldo, to exile Jadon Sancho.
The control players respect because it is clear this man is the boss.
Unfortunately, right now, nobody knows if he will still be in charge by the end of next month, never mind the end of the season.
The way he had the team playing at times last term was as good as we have seen in the last ten years — since Sir Alex retired in 2013.
He won the Carabao Cup — the club’s first silverware in six years — reached the FA Cup final and finished third in the league.
But as Ten Hag says, when it comes to United “good is not good enough”. There is no doubt that had Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw been fit this season then things would look very different.
Likewise, if Casemiro had the consistent run of games he needs to be at his best.
But the prosecution can point to the £204.7million it will cost for Antony, Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana and ask: “Why?”
United played out a 2-2 draw at home to Tottenham on SundayCredit: Getty
With Onana now at the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon, we will soon find out if United will miss him.
Ten Hag knows Antony can be much better than he has shown.
And there was evidence in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham that Hojlund is starting to find his feet and that an understanding with Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes is growing.
If Rashford can get his head straight, we all know he is one of the best talents in the English game.
There are flickers of an identifiable style of slick counterattacking football beginning to form.
As Ten Hag himself made clear on Friday, the pressure and expectation at United is greater than anywhere else.
It might be this season is sacrificed as he continues to plot a path to sustained success.
Ten Hag has a contract until summer 2025 and he should get a new one now to show the club have faith in him.
It is time to back the boss, big time.
With Manchester United 13 points off the top, SunSport’s Neil Custis looks at how the sleeping giants can become title dreamers again…
    DEFENSIVE SOLIDITY
Ten Hag has struggled with injuries in defence this seasonCredit: Getty
Due to illness and injury, Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag has fielded TEN different centre-back partnerships already this season.
He has also been without Luke Shaw — considered one of the best full-backs in Europe.
Centre-backs Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez finally teamed up again during Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham.
And there is no doubt that if they get an injury-free run together, things will look much better at the back.
With those three and one from Diogo Dalot or Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the right, they can boast one of the Prem’s best back fours.
    FORWARD THINKING
Rasmus Hojlund is starting to hit his stride in front of goalCredit: Getty
There is evidence that an understanding is starting to build between Marcus Rashford and summer signing Rasmus Hojlund — with Bruno Fernandes pulling the strings as a No 10.
Hojlund broke his Prem duck with that emotional winner against Aston Villa on Boxing Day and it looks to have filled him with confidence.
He hit a cracking third-minute opener against Spurs on Sunday.
If the 20-year-old Dane continues to grow into his role and Rashford finds his scoring boots again, United will be a real threat up front.
Still, you feel United must go big on a top-class No 9 this summer.
    SORT OUT KEEPER HEADACHE
Andre Onana was signed to replace David de Gea in the summerCredit: Getty
There is little doubt that had David De Gea still been in goal for United they would be looking forward to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
The £43.8million Andre Onana is not a good like-for-like replacement.
His so-called distribution skills are hardly those of Ederson.
Even if they were, United just cannot play out from the back with any certainty.
And it will be interesting to see if Altay Bayindir provides a viable option with Onana at the Africa Cup of Nations, otherwise the club might have to think again in the summer.
    MAKE OLD TRAFFORD A FORTRESS

The ground itself is crumbling and the players do when the pressure is on in front of their own fans.
Ten Hag and Co need to make this famous old ground a place opponents fear again — not those in United shirts themselves.
So far this season at ld Trafford the Red Devils have lost four league games — plus two in the Champions League — and exited the Carabao Cup with a 3-0 loss to an under-strength Newcastle.
    GIVE MANAGER NEW DEAL

The club is back at square one or maybe even further back than that.

Change does not bring the long-term stability required, which is why the club need to publicly back the Dutchman now with a new contract.
The board must have faith that what convinced them to employ him in the first place will finally lead them towards a return to the top. More

I’m ex-Man Utd star who Fergie signed without watching, now I’m starring at Afcon after switching nationality

SIR ALEX FERGUSON’S signing of Bebe for Manchester United in 2010 is one that continues to live on in infamy.United paid Portuguese third division side Vitoria de Guimaraes £7.4million to sign the winger – despite Ferguson admitting he had never watched him play.
Little was known about Bebe when he signedCredit: Dave Pinegar – The Sun
But he is now starring at Cape VerdeCredit: AFP
Bebe’s signature was instead suggested by Ferguson’s trusted confidante and former assistant Carlos Quieroz.
The signing never really worked out, with Bebe playing just seven times for the club before being sold to Benfica.
He then spent some wilderness years jumping from club to club on loan and rarely playing, including at the likes of Benfica and Cordoba.
But at 33 now, Bebe finally appears to have found his feet and is experiencing a career renaissance.

The winger has been playing regularly for Madrid-based side Rayo Vallecano, who are currently 11th in LaLiga.
The club were, until last season, managed by Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.
And his performances there have seen him earn a call-up to Cape Verde to represent them at Afcon this year.
Bebe’s story before becoming a footballer is a remarkable one, spending much of his childhood in Portugal growing up in a homeless shelter.

He was still living in shelters just prior to his move to United in 2010.
And having grown up in Portugal, he did initially represent them at international level.
But he was allowed to switch to Cape Verde in 2022 after not appearing in the nation’s first team.
Since then he has made 11 appearances for their first-team, scoring four goals.
And Cape Verde got off to the dream start in their opening Afcon game last night when they beat Ghana 2-1 thanks to a last minute goal from substitute Garry Rodrigues.
The side have their work cut out in getting out of the group, with Mohamed Salah’s Egypt the favourite to get out of Group B – but beating Ghana is a huge first step. More

Late twist in Hannibal Mejbri transfer as Sir Jim Ratcliffe ‘insists on last-minute change to loan deal from Man Utd’

He was filmed arriving in Seville airport with a smile on his face – but United supporters were less than impressed.
One said: “This makes me sad.
“He’s so much better than Eriksen physically and so much better than McTominay technically, yet he’s the one Ten Hag has thrown out of the door”
Another added: “If he’s sold I have no words, kids gonna be wicked.”

One raged: “Another big mistake. Hannibal certainly has what it takes to make it at this club and has been forced out.
“I don’t have a problem with a simple loan but that buy option is ridiculous.”
Mejbri, 20, has struggled for game time this season with only 11 appearances and just five starts.
So United decided to potentially cash in on the Frenchman by sanctioning his move to Sevilla.

But according to Fabrizio Romano, there was a late twist in the deal as owners INEOS insisted on including a back clause before approving the deal.
So fans were quick to hail their new ownership, led by British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
One said: “INEOS is saving us big time. Finally a buy back clause in this deal. Would have liked a simple loan without buy option but it is what it is.”
Another agreed: “Someone used their brain and added in a buy back!
“I’m not used to the club making smart decisions, let’s hope it continues and isn’t just a one off.”

I won three Premier Leagues under Sir Alex Ferguson.. Erik ten Hag is so similar to Fergie and can lead Man Utd to glory

MANCHESTER UNITED hero Lee Sharpe claims struggling manager Erik ten Hag is “very similar” to how Sir Alex Ferguson was during his early days at the club.Ten Hag has found himself under fire amid a turbulent campaign that has seen United getting eliminated in the Champions League group stage and dropping to eighth place in the Premier League.

The Dutch tactician’s future appears uncertain following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 25 per cent takeover with the Red Devils losing three of their last five Prem matches.
However, Sharpe insists the 53-year-old shouldn’t be sacked and reminded the fans that Ferguson wasn’t much different during his early years when he took over in 1986.
The versatile midfielder joined the Red Devils just two years after Sir Alex took over and saw him struggle to build his glittering legacy at Old Trafford.
Fergie didn’t win anything in his first four years at the club and some fans even called for his dismissal before he finally lifted the FA Cup in 1990.

Sharpe then went on to win three Premier League titles, two FA Cup trophies and the 1992 League Cup under Ferguson.
And the ex-England international insists Ten Hag needs more time the same way the legendary Scotsman had as he can also lead United back on top.
Sharpe told SunSport on behalf of Fruityslots.com: “I think they’re very similar in a lot of ways. I think he’s very disciplined. He’s very organised. He lives, eats, breathes football.
“You can see he is 100 per cent dedicated to the club and to the task of getting the team right. So I think it is about giving him a bit of faith, giving him a bit of trust and strengthening in January if they can. I think you’ve got to give him a bit of time.

“You know they keep changing managers and a new manager to come in now would have his own philosophy, would want his own players, would ostracise certain players because they wouldn’t fit into his sort of regime.
“So I think it would probably be a little bit more detrimental than helpful if they sacked him now.
“Give him a chance, give him a bit of time to get players back on their feet on the pitch, get the squad strengthened up again and see what it can do from there.
“But I certainly think he knows what he’s talking about. And I would certainly give him a little bit more time.”

Sharpe insists Ten Hag can’t be blamed alone for this season’s shambles as he has also been dealing with a long and growing injury list.
The former Leeds ace added that even if the ex-Ajax boss was dismissed there wouldn’t be a “great list of candidates” to replace him.
Sharpe added: “Well, I think at the moment [it] would be a bit harsh to sack him. I’m not sure there’s a great list of candidates to take over if I’m honest. But I also think with the injury list he’s had, you saw the bench last night [against Wigan] there was hardly a senior player on the bench.
“So I think he’s had a tough time with injuries. He’s had a few issues to deal with off the pitch as well. So I think he’s had a bit of a tough time in his first 12 months in charge.

“So I think it’s a bit early to pull the plug. I think if they could back him during this window, get him a couple of players to strengthen the squad and just see how we go over the next couple of months.
“I don’t think there would be any reason to sack him before the end of the season.” More

I felt full force of Fergie’s hairdryer at Man Utd… he told me to sell my house and leave during Liverpool horror show

MANCHESTER UNITED hero Lee Sharpe opened up about the most unforgettable hairdryer treatment he ever received from legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.Ferguson ran United with an iron first since the day he took over in 1986 until his emotional departure in 2013, and that included some infamous backstage outbursts to some of his greatest stars.

Sharpe didn’t escape that dreaded hairdryer during his eight-year stint at Old Trafford, which kicked off in 1988 when he was only 17 years old.
Fergie always showed faith in the Red Devils’ academy, even in his early years before he even won the FA Cup in 1990, and the versatile midfielder was one of many youngsters that got a chance.
However, Sir Alex would push them the same way he did to his most respected veterans even before he won a single piece of silverware for United, where he ended up lifting over of 24 high honours.
Sharpe was only 18 years old and very new in the first team when he first encountered the Scotsman’s wrath during a crunch derby against rivals Liverpool at Anfield.

The ex-England international struggled in the first half and Ferguson let him know about it at half-time in the dressing room.
The now 82-year-old was so enraged he actually ordered the then teenager to sell his house, his car and even his dog before leaving the club.
However, the now 52-year-old now sees how the United legend was only trying to get the best out of him and looks back at the incident with a big smile on his face.
Sharpe told SunSport on behalf of Fruityslots.com: “For me personally. My worst one was probably at Anfield at half-time when he told me I have to move out my house and go back to Birmingham.

“And then [to] get out [for the] second half and go and play well at Anfield, which was a very difficult thing to do in the best of times…
“He was certainly an aggressive manager but certainly got the best out of players.”
Sharpe went on to flourish under Ferguson as he amassed a total of 245 appearances at United as well as three Premier League titles, two FA Cup trophies and the 1992 League Cup. More

Mason Greenwood reveals ‘best feeling so far’ in rare interview after Getafe aces ‘take Man Utd loanee under their wing’

MASON Greenwood has told how his new club have “taken him under their wing” in a rare interview. The Manchester United forward is on loan with Spanish club Getafe after Old Trafford bosses ruled he couldn’t play for the club following abuse allegations.

The decision came after allegations of attempted rape, assault and controlling coercive behaviour were dropped by the CPS when a key witness refused to co-operate with the prosecution.
The 22-year-old has scored five goals and provided four assists in 15 games since moving to Getafe in September.
Now he has given an interview to Getafe club media about life in Spain – and thanked fans for their support.
Greenwood said: “Everything’s fine, I adapted pretty quickly. My team-mates took me under their wing and I’ve just been happy ever since coming here, training and playing the games.

“The fans mean a lot to me. The best feeling so far is when I scored my first goal here at the stadium and it meant a lot to me, I heard the fans quite a lot.
“Also we had the training day and a lot of fans came out and watched so we always appreciate the fans, they’re like an extra man out there on the pitch when they’re out there supporting us.”
His future remains uncertain with Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and AC Milan all keeping tabs on his form.
SunSport revealed this week that Barcelona are eyeing a £40million move and are prepared to offer the winger Lionel Messi’s old number 10 shirt to secure his services.

Argentine World Cup hero and eight-time Ballon D’or winner Messi, 36, left Barca in August 2021 and his number was handed to Ansu Fati.
But it has not had an owner since Fati moved to Brighton on loan in September this year.
It comes after Greenwood enjoyed a family Christmas at home after jetting into Manchester with his partner Harriet Robson.
He was pictured shopping with Wag Harriet in Hale, Cheshire, in the run up to Christmas.
The couple, who have a baby daughter, flew back to the UK to see family during the La Liga winter break which runs from December 23 to January 3.
Meanwhile Sir Jim Ratcliffe completed his 25 per cent takeover at Manchester United.
The British billionaire has purchased a £1.3billion stake in the Red Devils from the Glazer family.
Ratcliffe, who will run football operations at the club, had initially wanted to become the majority owner, but has now settled for a minority stake.
And it has been confirmed he will inject £237million into the club. More
