I’m a former Man Utd star – Erik ten Hag needs Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s backing and here’s why he shouldn’t be sacked

ERIK TEN HAG should remain Manchester United manager for next season regardless of how he finishes this term. That is according to United hero Mikael Silvestre, who insist the club’s new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe should give Ten Hag his full backing because of the Dutchman’s success in the previous campaign.

The 54-year-old came under fire this term following a poor start that saw the Red Devils getting knocked out of the Champions League group stages and falling dangerously far away from the top four.
The ex-Ajax boss has managed to turn things around after the holidays as he has won six out of eight matches, of which he only lost one, this year.
Ten Hag is making a strong claim for a late top-four push but his position at the Old Trafford dugout still looks uncertain.
Ratcliffe, who completed a £1.03billion takeover of 27.7 per cent of the club and is now in charge of sporting operations, hinted at major changes ahead of next season.

However, Silvestre remains adamant that the Dutch tactician should stay put as he has already showed he can work wonders with the right players.
Ten Hag led United to a third-place finish on his debut campaign, won their first piece of silverware in six years after a Carabao Cup triumph and also made it to the FA Cup Final.
Silvestre told SunSport on behalf of Betting Expert: “Yeah, I think he should be given time because of last season – the way the team behaved. The team performed and there was clear direction.
“He needs to be given time to implement his ideas, to have the right players in the right positions to go back to winning ways and to be a dominant force again in the league.

“So I think he should be given time and the backing necessary in terms of time and investment.”
Ten Hag has recently insisted he has Ratcliffe’s backing for the long term.

Man Utd legend Sir Alex Ferguson brutally threatened to send me back to France – my error wasn’t even the worst!

Sir Alex is known as one of the best managers in the history of football, but the United great is also notorious for his dressing room blowups that brought chills down every player’s spine.
It didn’t take long for Silvestre to get acquainted with Fergie’s backstage bashing as it took place in his third ever Prem match in 1999 shortly after he joined the Red Devils from Inter Milan.
The former left-back started against Southampton at Old Trafford and saw his team leading 3-2.
But then the ex-France international was dispossessed just outside his penalty box in the 73rd minute by Marians Pahars who set Matt Le Tissier up for the equaliser.

Ferguson was so furious with Silvestre at full-time that his face turned blood red as he lashed out at him in the dressing room.
The Scottish gaffer also warned his defender to never commit the same gaffe or he would send him “back to France”.
That was despite the fact United keeper Massimo Taibi allowed Saints back into the game by fumbling Le Tissier’s shot in a highly memorable gaffe. The stopper allowed the ball to through his arms and legs just minutes before Silvestre’s mistake.
Silvestre told SunSport on behalf of Betting Expert: “It’s always the first one, it’s the first one you remember cause it takes you by surprise.

“I didn’t wait long, it was a home game against Southampton. I recovered the ball 35m or 40m from our goal and straight away after I lost it Southampton equalised.

“So we drew at home and my mistake led to Sir Alex being extremely angry and telling me that it was the first time and the last time otherwise he would send me back to France.
“That was super loud and his face became red – super angry at me, which was normal but very intense.”
Silvestre took Ferguson’s warning on board as he went on to amass 10 goals and 20 assists in 361 appearances.
The now 46-year-old also won five Premier League titles, the 2004 FA Cup and the 2008 Champions League throughout his nine-year stint at Old Trafford.

Carragher said: “Twenty seconds into the game against Fulham, it’s been the problem for Manchester United all season, there’s space between the back four and the midfield.
“We go to the reason why they’re poor defensively and can’t cope with counter-attacks, they’ve got no pace at the back and a lack of legs in midfield.
“People say: ‘there’s no patterns of play at Manchester United, how do they play and what’s the philosophy?’. ”
But Ten Hag says the former Liverpool Champions League winner has been against United from the start and is not objective in his view points.

Ten Hag said: “First of all, some analysts are very objective in their comments, very good advice, some are very subjective.
“Jamie Carragher from the first moment on has criticised and now he wants to make his point.”
Yet the under-fire United boss went on to agree with some of Carragher’s assessment, particularly in how United began Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat.

But Ten Hag even admitted that his team had lacked the necessary “passion” in the first half.
He added: “I was not pleased with the performance with the defending, especially on the left side, how we did the pressing because they came out.
“Especially in the first half an hour, several times on the left side and that can’t happen and that has to do with willingness, spirit, passion.
“That was, in the previous weeks, very good for this team and therefore, we won football games.

Breakthrough Man Utd star still getting changed with Under-21s and could leave in summer after contract row

MANCHESTER UNITED breakthrough ace Omari Forson could leave the club in June when his contract expires.Forson, 19, is among United’s most highly-rated academy graduates and shone bright during his first ever Premier League start against Fulham.

Man Utd, though, want to keep Forson whose deal runs out in JuneCredit: Getty
The Red Devils’ manager Erik ten Hag opted against fielding £85.5million man Antony, whom he pushed to sign two years ago, even though in-form striker Rasmus Hojlund was injured.
Instead, Ten Hag placed his faith in teenage prospect Forson who started on the right flank on Saturday at Old Trafford.
United lost 2-1 to the Cottagers but the England Under-20 international hinted at a lot of promise for the future.
According to The Athletic, however, there are some significant doubts about Forson’s future at Old Trafford as he has yet to agree on a new contract.

Despite training with the first team since the summer, the youngster doesn’t have a place in the senior dressing room and still gets changed with the Under-21s.
This is partly due to a lack of space but also the club’s culture that demands young players to pay their dues, with Kobbie Mainoo only using the first-team dressing room a month ago.
United, though, have a lot of belief in Forson and hope that the faith Ten Hag showed him will convince him to extend his contract, which runs out on June 30.
However, there are worries that his start against Fulham and further opportunities down the road would raise his profile and that would allow him to get a better deal elsewhere.

The striker has not featured for United since he was suspended after being arrested on suspicion of rape and sexual assault in January 2022.
All charges were subsequently dropped with the Red Devils suggesting that he recommences his career away from Old Trafford.
Now, according to Getafe president Angel Torres, who spoke with Spanish radio station COPE, the forward wants to remain at Getafe.
He said: “He is very comfortable and crazy about staying another year.

“It’s a matter that they [United] have to decide. There is new ownership. They have to decide.
“In Spain, he has a market but they [Barcelona] have money. Barca’s way of playing would suit him well but it depends on Manchester United.
“If it’s true, he’ll tell me.”
Last week, new United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe refused to rule out the possibility of Greenwood returning to the club.
    Most read in Football
The Red Devils academy graduate has attracted interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid and United could well cash in this summer.
But Sir Jim has since hinted that the 22-year-old could be handed a path back to Old Trafford.
Mason Greenwood trains for first time with new club Getafe after more than 18 months since last game
Speaking for the first time since completing his £1.03billion purchase of a 27 per cent stake in the club, which includes control of football affairs, petro-chemicals magnate Ratcliffe gave a remarkable insight into his ambitions and thoughts.
And the Red Devils supremo claimed last Wednesday that a fresh decision will be taken on the future of Greenwood.
Ratcliffe said: “We will make a decision. I don’t know if he (Greenwood) could still have a future.
“All I can do is talk about the principle of how we will approach decisions like that.
“Is he the right type of footballer? Are we happy with that? Is he a good person or not?
“He (Greenwood) is a Manchester United footballer and we are in charge of football. So the answer is it’s quite clear we have to make a decision.”
Sir Jim also suggested his preferred option would be a new £2bn replacement stadium for Old Trafford, although rebuilding the club’s 114-year-old home is still on the agenda.
Greenwood’s potential future optionsMASON Greenwood’s long-term future in football still remains unclear.
Greenwood is out of contract in 2025 and is largely expected to leave Old Trafford in the summer.
But the star has enjoyed a good season at Getafe and has been linked with other clubs.
Here are his four main options:
    Stay at Manchester United
Greenwood’s United career was largely thought to be over when he moved to Getafe on deadline day last September.
But new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has since hinted that the 22-year-old could be handed a path back to Old Trafford.
Ratcliffe left the door open for Greenwood to play for United again after saying a “decision” needed to be made.
Sir Jim said: “He’s on loan obviously but he’s not the only one. We’ve got one or two footballers that we have to deal with and we have to make a decision on so we will do that.”
    Barcelona
The Spanish giants are understood to have been monitoring the former Manchester United star all season.
Greenwood has reportedly told his advisors that Barcelona is a “dream move”.
One source told SunSport: “Barcelona want to sign Greenwood, and he wants to move there.
“The next step is for the clubs to come to an agreement.”
Barca are even said to be willing to offer the 22-year-old Lionel Messi’s legendary No10 shirt to convince him to join.
    Atletico Madrid
The Red Devils academy graduate has also attracted interest from Atletico Madrid.
Marca previously reported, via Estadio Deportivo, that the club have held talks with United as they step up their pursuit.
Atletico had a chance to take in Greenwood up close during their derby meeting in mid-December.
Whilst the former England international didn’t get on the scoresheet during the testy 3-3 draw, Getafe were able to frustrate the Champions League side and escape the Metropolitano with a point.
    Make Getafe move permanent
Greenwood has been building back his form as a regular starter at the La Liga side.
He seems to have been enjoying his football and is thought to be interested in staying in Spain long-term after settling in the national capital.
Greenwood has scored seven goals and provided five assists in 25 appearances.
But several unnamed Italian clubs have also been linked with making moves for Greenwood in the summer.

Greenwood was sent out on loan to LaLiga side Getafe in September last year.
His time in Spain has so far proven fruitful, having scored seven goals and provided five assists in 25 appearances.
