‘I was not the coach’ – Jose Mourinho in veiled Man Utd dig as ex-Red Devils boss highlights familiar problem

Man Utd ‘consider shock Ivan Toney transfer approach in blow to Chelsea pursuit of Brentford star’

MANCHESTER UNITED are considering a shock transfer for Ivan Toney, according to reports. The Red Devils are in the market for a new forward in the summer to compete with Rasmus Hojlund.Ivan Toney is has emerged as a shock target on Man Utd’s radarCredit: RexToney could move to Old Trafford as Man Utd ponder the type of striker they want in the summerCredit: EPAAnd, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, their search may land them on Brentford ace Toney.Toney has made no secret of his desire to leave the Bees for pastures new in the summer. Man Utd are yet to finalise their summer transfer strategy following the investment of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos, who have been handed control over the clubs football operations after a decade of mediocrity under the Glazers.Ratcliffe and his new team are still ironing out certain profiles they want, and are deciding between bringing an experienced or younger frontman.READ MORE ON MAN UTDBut, according to Romano in his daily briefing column for CaughtOffside, Toney’s availability could prompt Man Utd to make a move.Romano said: “It’s just one of the options to be considered and discussed internally. “Man United are still in early stages of the process to decide which striker they want to sign; experienced or young. “Talks are gonna take place internally, Toney will be one of the names available on the market so could be one to watch.”Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERSAt the age of 28, Toney would offer a wealth of experience without age being a risk.Arsenal and Chelsea are among the other clubs who have been linked with the star.Inside Ivan Toney’s Life As A FootballerHowever, SunSport understands the Gunners have cooled their interest, leaving the Blues, Tottenham and West Ham as the main parties in the running to have expressed interest. That is of course, barring a move from Man Utd to bring Toney to Old Trafford.Toney unlikely to let opportunity slideBy Charlie Wyett
IVAN TONEY will be backing himself to beat Ollie Watkins in the race to Euro 2024.
Because when it comes to supreme self-confidence, others might call it extraordinary arrogance, Toney gives Zlatan Ibrahimovic — football’s ultimate bighead — a run for his money.
If, heaven forbid, something did happen to Harry Kane ahead of the summer tournament in Germany, Brentford striker Toney would likely see himself the only viable alternative as a replacement No 9.
Equally, if England found themselves in another shootout at this year’s final in Berlin on July 14, most would want the bloke who has scored 35 of his 38 career penalties to be one of Gareth Southgate’s takers.
Aston Villa forward Watkins, 28, is enjoying the best season of his career with 22 goals in all competitions but his Euros trial did not go so well with a disappointing performance in the 1-0 defeat by Brazil on Saturday.
Against Belgium, Toney is unlikely to make the same mistake.
A strong performance could see the Brentford ace continue on his journey from footballing outcast to, potentially, a national hero this summer.

Given Erik ten Hag likes to utilise a physically dominant forward such as Sebastien Haller at Ajax or Wout Weghorst at Man Utd last season, it stands to reason that Toney would compliment the Dutchman’s system. In the meantime, Toney is set to start for England in their friendly against Belgium.Toney returned to football in January following a betting ban.In that time he has netted four goals in ten Premier League games, but blanked in each of his last five. Here’s how Toney has performed this season More

I bought Man Utd star Marcus Rashford’s £700,000 Rolls-Royce for £184,000 – but had no idea it was completely destroyed

I coached ‘baby giraffe’ future Premier League and England star – I’m not surprised Man Utd are interested in a transfer

STEVEN PRESSLEY was barely a month into life as Carlisle boss when he took on definitely one of the less glamorous sides of the job.An unofficial reserve game at Oldham’s training ground on a typically cold North West winter’s day — and the new gaffer was on a fact-finding mission.Jarrad Branthwaite (centre) training with England ahead of his expected international debut against BelgiumCredit: AFPBranthwaite cut his teeth at Carlisle in the EFLCredit: RexSteven Pressley gave Branthwaite his big break when he was Carlisle managerCredit: PA:Press AssociationIt was February 2019 and as well as checking on the progress of those returning from injury, Pressley  wanted to see  if any uncut diamonds lay beneath the senior ranks. Two hours later he was back in the car, phoning director of football David Holdsworth. As a former centre-back whose own CV included both Old Firm clubs, a place in Hearts’ Hall of Fame and 32 Scotland caps, Pressley knows a good defender when he sees one.And in Jarrad Branthwaite, the raw-boned rookie who had blown him away, Carlisle had exactly that. He had to find out more . . . and  tie him down.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLBranthwaite was only 16, still to sign a professional contract, and — as his new boss said — “a bit like a baby giraffe”.But he  stood out a mile and within a week the 6ft 5in local boy penned a two-year deal.Pressley revealed: “No one had spoken to me about Jarrad, but when I went to watch that reserve game he caught my eye.“It was one of those moments when you’re really excited about seeing such a good young player for the first time. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKER“Straight after the game I rang my director of football and said,  ‘Listen, we have to get this young man tied up’.“Obviously there was a lot of developing to be done and he was a  bit like a baby giraffe.Who could be Man Utd’s next manager after Ten Hag?“Even though he was so big, he still had to grow into his body.“But  he was two-footed and — for such a young player — already had the basics, which was obviously very encouraging.“So was the fact that when I told his parents of my plans for Jarrad, it was clear what a supportive and sensible family he had.“There were no ridiculous expectations, they just wanted  to see their son progress, which allows the proper process to take place.”As it happens, that process went like lightning. A month later, Branthwaite was on the first-team bench. Two months into the following season he was a regular starter.Pressley, now head of player development at Brentford, added: “To play 16 or 17 on the spin at centre-back in League Two, against seasoned pros, says everything about him.“He had to understand things like protecting the space going for headers and develop the finer arts, but the foundations were all in place.“People don’t realise how tough the mental side is for young players either,  but Jarrad handled it just as impressively.“That temperament came from his stable background.”I said very early Carlisle had a future international – I’ll be very proud when it happens.Steven Pressley on Jarrad BranthwaitePressley was not the only one impressed. In 2020, after only nine league games, Everton snapped him up, sending him on loan to Blackburn and then to a year with PSV Eindhoven. After returning with a  Dutch Cup winners’ medal, Branthwaite, now 21, started the season in the Toffees’ first team — and is now on Manchester United and Real Madrid’s radar. He has also forced his way into Gareth Southgate’s Euro plans and is likely to make his Three Lions bow in Tuesday’s friendly against Belgium. On his rise, Pressley added: “I said very early Carlisle had a future international.“I’ll be very proud when it happens.“It’s no surprise to see him linked with such big names.
