Man Utd 2 Liverpool 2: Arsenal TOP of Premier League table with seven games to go as Reds held in Old Trafford thriller

MO SALAH’S late penalty spiked an extraordinary Manchester United comeback to earn Liverpool a point. But wasteful Liverpool still squandered the chance to return to the top of the Premier League as they failed to capitalise on their complete dominance of the first half.Mo Salah netted from 12 yards to rescue a point for LiverpoolCredit: GettyKobbie Mainoo scored a screamer for Man UtdCredit: GettyBut the 2-2 draw left Liverpool trailing Arsenal in the title raceCredit: ReutersHere’s how the team’s fared on paperMan Utd came back in the second half after Liverpool dominated the first halfJurgen Klopp’s side are behind leaders Arsenal on goal difference and just a point ahead of third-placed Manchester City after another extraordinary clash with their bitter rivals United. After Luis Diaz had volleyed Liverpool into the lead, Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo produced stunning finishes to turn a one-sided game on its head. Fernandes’ equaliser came from a horrible error by young Liverpool centre-back Jarrell Quansah, which could yet be looked back on as this season’s ‘Demba Ba moment’. Because Liverpool had outclassed United until that point and seemed to be cruising back to the summit.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLBut Salah equalised from the spot after Aaron Wan-Bissaka conceded an 84th-minute penalty as United threw away a lead for the third successive match. This was almost as dramatic as United’s crazy 4-3 FA Cup win over Liverpool three weeks earlier. And while Erik ten Hag is facing the sack at Old Trafford, he has done much to dent Klopp’s farewell tour – ending the German’s Quadruple dream and now damaging his bid for a treble.  It was difficult to know precisely which chaos would have been at the forefront of United minds – the shambles of Thursday’s late collapse at Chelsea, or the glory of their FA Cup win over Liverpool here just three weeks ago. Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERSThis match began in a similar vein to that FA Cup classic – end to end, wide open and the volume cranked up around Old Trafford. Rasmus Hojlund had the ball in the Liverpool net in the second minute but as soon as Bruno Fernandes had picked the pass, the Dane always looked offside. Watch Bruno Fernandes score from inside centre-circle after horror gaffe gifts Man Utd way back into Liverpool clashLiverpool, though, were soon on the front foot – Dominik Szoboszlai going close three times before Diaz’s opener.First the Hungarian was sent clean through but was denied by a smart stop from Andre Onana, then he pinged a long-ranger just over and skewed a shot wide from a low Andy Robertson centre. After the mayhem of the Cup quarter-final, this was formbook stuff – Liverpool exerting their superiority, outclassing United. The opener arrived midway through the first half from a corner which was well-executed by Liverpool but disastrously defended by United. Robertson delivered it to Nunez, who beat Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Casemiro to steer a header towards the far post where an unmarked Diaz volleyed into the ground and past Onana. Klopp’s side were voracious in their appetite for a second goal but wayward in their finishing.Nunez was causing problems for teenager Willy Kambwala – making only his second United start due to four centre-backs on the United injury list. A rapid break ended with a Salah shot pushed wide by Onana, then Nunez, in space, curled one over before Salah shot wide from Szoboszlai’s crossfield pass.  It was as one-sided as Liverpool’s 5-0 win here during the dog days of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign but the visitors were nowhere near as clinical. Casemiro enraged his own fans by kicking the ball out when Diaz went down feigning injury. And Fernandes, who so often seems short of friends, seemed to be picking out imaginary ones with some truly shocking passes.  Alejandro Garnacho thought he had opened the scoring early on before he was ruled offsideCredit: GettyMarcus Rashford added to Man Utd’s injury woes when he was subbed offCredit: AFPAndre Onana was once again busy facing a number of shots against himCredit: GettyAt half-time, the shot-count was 15-0, which became 17-0 before United – in some surreal Alice-in-Wonderland plot twist – equalised. Quansah’s attempted square pass to Virgil Van Dijk wasn’t even remotely close to its target but it was still quite some finish from Fernandes to loft a first-time finish from almost 40 yards over Caoimhin Kelleher, who might have done better. The scoreline was not so much flattering United as bathing them in asses’ milk. Suddenly, though, Old Trafford was reverberating with song and United were purring, Alejandro Garnacho had a shot deflected over and Marcus Rashford’s cross-shot caused panic for Kelleher. Still, Liverpool should have regained the lead when they broke from a United corner, and were five-on-two at one point, before Diaz – who should have shot – crossed for the far post where Nunez, true to form, miscued his shot. Ten Hag withdrew the injured Rashford, sending on Antony, while Klopp replaced Conor Bradley – rather than Quansah – with Joe Gomez. Jurgen Klopp fumed as his side went 2-1 downCredit: AFPAaron Wan-Bissaka fouled Harvey Elliott in the box to award Liverpool a penaltyCredit: AFPThen the remarkable turned into the unthinkable and United took the lead. Casemiro played an overhead pass to Mainoo who found Garnacho. The winger skipped a pass to Wan-Bissaka who squared for Mainoo, who turned and curled a gem of a shot inside the far corner. It was a ridiculous finish from a teenager who is primarily a defensive midfielder. While Liverpool had squandered so many clear chances, here was a United kid conjuring a goal out of nothing. Soon Onana was performing a Cruyff turn on Cody Gakpo, Garnacho was passing up a decent opportunity and a United win was beginning to look a distinct possibility. Klopp was fuming when Kambwalla was only booked for a heavy challenge on Gomez – although the United man did when the ball. Then Salah skied a glaring chance after Onana pushed out a Diaz shot. Soon, though, the Egyptian made amends. Wan-Bissaka lunged at Harvey Elliott in his own penalty area, missed the ball, and Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot. READ MORE SUN STORIESSalah sent Onana the wrong way and Liverpool were back on terms. Diaz skied a brilliant chance from close range and Antony shot straight at Kelleher when he could have won it in injury-time. Man Utd ‘interested in Thiago Motta as manager to replace Erik ten Hag’ – whose philosophy is bizarre 2-7-2 formation

MANCHESTER UNITED are interested in appointing Thiago Motta as Erik ten Hag’s replacement, according to reports. The Paris Saint-Germain legend has been defying expectations at Bologna this season, leading the Italian outfit in an unlikely top four charge.Thiago Motta has been linked with Man UtdCredit: ReutersErik ten Hag could be replaced by the Italian in the summerCredit: AlamyMotta’s football philosophy is underlined by a stunning ‘2-7-2’ formationCredit: RexAfter taking charge in September 2022, the 41-year-old led Bologna to ninth in his first season and now has them fourth with a five-point cushion ahead of the run in.Despite his remarkable achievements in northern Italy, founded by an unorthodox “2-7-2” formation, Motta’s contract expires in the summer. According to Gazzetta, Man Utd chiefs are among the biggest admirers of the former Barcelona and Inter Milan midfielder. Further reports have also seen Bologna ace Joshua Zirkzee, 22, linked to boost the firepower in the team’s ranks.READ MORE ON MAN UTDHowever, the Red Devils will face competition from Juventus for his signature. Motta’s agent, Dario Canovi, recently declared he will coach in the Champions League one day. Therefore, Man Utd’s struggles in the Premier League – which has left them nine points adrift of fifth-placed Tottenham who look set to claim the last Champions League spot – could be decisive.Regardless, Motta has not decided on his future at the Stadio Dall’Ara.Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKEROld Trafford head coach Ten Hag remarkably received a boost to his prospects of keeping his job after reports emerged suggesting there were “a lack of viable interested alternatives”.Names touted for the Man Utd hotseat include the likes of former Chelsea coach Graham Potter and England boss Gareth Southgate.Who could be Man Utd’s next manager after Ten Hag?Late collapses against Brentford and Chelsea this week have seen Man Utd’s hopes of earning a spot in the UCL next season all but mathematically end. They face Liverpool next in a rematch of their thrilling FA Cup quarter-final before the international break. What is Motta’s football philosophy? After hanging up his boots and stepping into coaching with PSG’s Under-18s in 2018, Motta shocked the world when he announced a brand new formation – the 2-7-2.The formation sounds extreme on paper, especially considering Motta treats his goalkeeper as a “midfielder”.But Motta reads his team from left to right rather than bottom up – so it is actually similar to a traditional 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1.Speaking on his ideas in 2018, Motta said: “My idea it to play offensively. A short team that controls the game, high pressure and a lot of movement with and without the ball.Motta’s 2-7-2 reads from left to right with two left-sided players, seven midfielders including the goalkeeper and two right-sided players”I want the player that has the ball to always have three or four solutions and two team-mates close by to help.”The difficulty in football is, often to do things simply but to control the base, pass and get free.”I don’t like the numbers of the field because they trick you. You can be super offensive with a 5-3-2 and defensive in a 4-3-3.”Depending on the quality of the guys. I had a game a while ago where the two full-backs ended up playing as the 9 and 10.”But that doesn’t mean I don’t like people like Samuel and Chiellini, born defenders…”The goalkeeper counts as one of the midfield seven. For me, the attacker is the first defender and the goalkeeper is the first attacker.Motta’s managerial record
    Genoa (October 2019 – December 2019): Played 10, Wins 2, Draws 3, Losses 5
    Spezia (July 2021 – June 2022): Played 40, Wins 11, Draws 6, Losses 23
    Bologna (September 2022 – Present): Played 67, Wins 33, Draws 19, Losses 15.
Overall win percentage: 40.91 per cent

“The goalkeeper starts the play, with his feet and the attackers are the first to put pressure to recover the ball.”While opting for a more pragmatic approach at Spezia, Motta’s Bologna team have favoured a possession-dominant system this year. They are second in the division for most passes completed at an accuracy of 85.2 per cent. In build up they opt for a 1-3-2-5 formation but are proficient in rotating their options with 2-3-5 a common switch to help play through the lines. The 4-3-3-esque shape then sees the two No8s move wide to support the wingers and full-backs. But Bologna are far from direct and rank among the lowest in the division for crosses into the box, with Motta preferring his players to work the space and create from narrower positions where superior numbers can make their mark.READ MORE SUN STORIESThe formation is supplemented by players such as Zirkzee dropping into space to help progress the ball with Bologna’s box midfield.Defensively, Bologna press high but drop into a 4-1-4-1 mid-block.Inside Ratcliffe’s Man Utd plansEverything you need to know as Sir Jim Ratcliffe takes charge at Manchester United… More

Erik ten Hag handed unexpected boost as Man Utd boss edges closer to keeping job due to ‘lack of interest’
