Man Utd will be without Eric Bailly in coming weeks after Solskjaer confirms defender tested positive for coronavirus

MANCHESTER UNITED defender Eric Bailly will be out of action after testing positive for coronavirus. The 26-year-old has not returned to the UK after contracting Covid while on international duty with Ivory Coast.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was speaking after seeing his side snatch a 2-1 victory against Brighton thanks to Mason Greenwood’s headed winner.
The Norwegian gaffer said: “He won’t be with us for a little while.
“He went away with the Ivory Coast and tested positive for Covid.
“He’s not back in the country yet.”
It is just the latest setback for Bailly after failing to nail down a regular starting spot at United.
The defender joined United in 2016 from Villareal, but a combination of injury and poor form have seen him regularly on the sidelines.
And losing Bailly isn’t the only bit of bad news for Solskjaer.
The former Molde boss fears forward Anthony Martial could be out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

The 25-year-old was forced off with the problem while playing in a World Cup qualifier for France against Kazakhstan last week.
And while national team boss Didier Deschamps played down the severity of the injury, Solskjaer has now confirmed it is in fact much more serious than was first reported.
The Man Utd boss told MUTV: “Unfortunately, he sprained his knee with France.
“It’s always when they go away on internationals… you can keep your fingers crossed and hope they come back fit.
“Paul has played in all three games, 30, 60, 90 minutes, so that was a boost for us.
“Losing Anthony for what might be the rest of the season is very disappointing, especially when reports from there [France] was that it wasn’t anything serious but it looks a bad one.”

Man Utd verdict: Dean Henderson shows a few nerves as he embarks on final quest to oust David De Gea for good

DEAN HENDERSON has waited patiently for his chance to become Manchester United’s number one.And there were a few signs of nerves from the 24-year-old on his big night.
Dean Henderson spilled one ball in the first half – but it didn’t lead to a goalCredit: Getty
Yet that’s only to be expected – because in many ways the hard work starts now for the homegrown keeper.
He has to justify the faith that has been shown in him by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and live up to the reputation he has.
And for the next few weeks, until the end of the season at least, he will have United’s top earner David de Gea breathing down his neck.
Of course, the Spain international has been far from perfect over the last 12 months, but let’s not forget how many times he has saved United over the years.
He hasn’t been named the Red Devils’ Player of the Year more times than anyone else for nothing.
And De Gea, 30, will not relinquish the shirt he has held for almost a decade without a fight.
But it is Henderson’s to lose now and this was his first test as United’s No 1 – a role Gary Neville described recently as one of the most high-profile in world football.
Henderson was unlucky to be picking the ball out of his net after just 13 minutes.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seemed happy with his keeperCredit: Reuters

He made a superb reflex stop to keep out Danny Welbeck’s header, but the former United striker reacted quickly to nod in the rebound.
Albion had clearly identified they could put him under pressure from corners – getting bodies in front of him each time.
There was one heart-stopping moment when he seemed to catch one from Pascal Gross but then got in a terrible mess.
He dropped the ball against his skipper Harry Maguire who then had to help scoop the ball to safety.
There were good moments too, though, as he tipped over a thumping header from Lewis Dunk when the Seagulls were on top in the first half.

But overall it was a quiet night for Henderson – and there was nothing to suggest Solskjaer has made the wrong call. Or the right one.
With a top four place virtually secure and the pursuit of leaders City looking forlorn, the Europa League is now United’s priority.
If Henderson gets the nod in Andalusia then De Gea will know his reign is definitely over.
Former United defender Rio Ferdinand said: “Solskjaer is paid to make the decisions. Henderson has been waiting for this opportunity.
“Can he live up to the hype? I’m looking forward to seeing it.”
All eyes will be on Henderson over the next two months – including De Gea’s.

Man Utd striker Marcus Rashford heads straight down tunnel as he’s subbed off injured after scoring vs Brighton

MARCUS RASHFORD appeared to limp down the tunnel after he was subbed off against Brighton. The striker had not played since March 18 and was left out of the England squad having missed the previous three games for Manchester United.
Man Utd striker Marcus Rashford was taken off early on SundayCredit: Reuters
He was deemed fit enough to play against Brighton on Sunday and even bagged the equaliser – providing a neat finish into the far corner after being put through by Bruno Fernandes.
But less than ten minutes after that goal, Rashford was heading down the tunnel.
He appeared to be grimacing, although it is not yet clear if he has picked up another injury or was just taken off as a precaution.
Speaking after the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed the situation was ‘tough’ and could not confirm Rashford’s availability for Thursday’s Europa League game with Granada.
He told the BBC: “You just hope he can recover from it. He had to come off, but he’s a tough one.”
United had fallen a goal behind after former academy graduate Danny Welbeck opened the scoring for Brighton.

Solskjaer’s side struggled to get into the first-half but were better after the break.
On the equaliser, the manager noted: “It was a long ball which went up, we won it and it was great by Bruno to carry the ball. He’s hacked down as well!
“The finish was excellent – calm and composed. Marcus has been working on that a lot.”
It was substitute Mason Greenwood who then set United on their way to three points.

The teenage prodigy, who has struggled at times this season after a breakthrough campaign last year, scored with just seven minutes to play.
The close-range header was only Greenwood’s second in the Premier League this season.
Another Old Trafford striking product, Welbeck, had hit his third goal against United since leaving the club with the opener – the most of any ex-Red Devil in the Prem.

Man Utd player ratings: Greenwood dazzles with winner, Maguire pushes team-mates on but Cavani looks his age

MASON GREENWOOD was the matchwinner as Manchester United came from behind to beat Brighton. It wasn’t the most eye-catching of performances, but the three points puts United firmly in the driving seat for second place behind big rivals Man City.

Marcus Rashford had cancelled out old-boy Danny Welbeck’s opener for Brighton, who battled hard but lacked that cutting edge.
Here, SunSport’s John Hutchinson rates how United’s stars fared at Old Trafford.
    Dean Henderson – 6/10
Made a great point-blank save from Welbeck, but unfortunately couldn’t get near the rebound.
Held his nerve as Brighton piled forward for the equaliser and looked commanding in his area.
    Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 5
Benefitted from a rest recently but you wouldn’t have known in a subdued first 45.
Could have taken a few more risks in the second period to build some attacks down his flank
FREE BETS: GET OVER £2,000 IN SIGN UP OFFERS HERE

    Victor Lindelof – 6
Caught under the ball for Welbeck’s opening goal.
But battled well against the former Red Devil and Neal Maupay and is very much a confidence player.
    Harry Maguire – 7
Looked his usual composed self on the ball, but needed to give his team-mates some more urging during that dour first 45.
Became a pressing midfielder in the second half as United raised their line well into the Brighton half.
Harry Maguire led from example as he dragged United’s performance up a levelCredit: PA
    Luke Shaw – 6
Made his usual marauding runs in the first half, but often found himself in blind alleys.
Kept going forward in the second half and his confidence is flying him into the left-back spot for England at the Euros.
    Fred – 5
United’s trophy-winning teams of yesteryear demanded more of their midfielders than ‘looking busy’.
The Brazilian would be a good squad player going forward but surely doesn’t merit being a regular starter these days.
    Paul Pogba – 6
Frenchman was preferred to the likes of McTominay and Van de Beek in the middle of the park, but had a quiet first 45.
Stunning pass into Fernandes on the hour mark that the Portuguese star should have done better with.
Greenwood marked his man of the match performance with the winnerCredit: Reuters
    Mason Greenwood – 8
Looked the most lively of United’s attacking players in the first half, and hit the post with a rasping drive.
Confidence carried into the second, and wasn’t afraid to have a run and shot – and his header was a real poacher’s effort.
    Bruno Fernandes – 7
Injured his back early on, and that seemed to knock him off his game.
But still got his trademark assist for Rashford’s equaliser and was involved in the winner – standard.
    Marcus Rashford – 6
You’d have forgotten he was playing that poor first-half showing.
But the true sign of a world class player is they never take their eye off the ball, and he slotted home a beautiful equaliser before being subbed off ten minutes later with injury.
Rashford takes the congratulations from Cavani after equalisingCredit: Reuters
    Edinson Cavani – 4
Had to watch the midfield pass it around without ever actually getting the ball into his feet in the first 45.
But was a lifeless display up top for the 34-year-old Uruguayan and no surprise to see him subbed off.
    Subs
    Dan James (replaced Rashford, 72) – 6
Tried to get United motoring to complete a turnaround, and played his part in that.
Donny van de Beek (replaced Cavani, 81) – 6
Unlucky as if Greenwood wasn’t there he would have probably scored the winner as he was just behind.
Scott McTominay (replaced Pogba, 84) – NA
(not used): David de Gea, Lee Grant, Amad Diallo, Nemanja Matic, Brandon Williams, Axel Tuanzebe.

Man Utd 2 Brighton 1: Greenwood pops up to complete comeback after Welbeck put Seagulls ahead at old club

MANCHESTER UNITED can almost hear the Champions League chimes now.Sunday’s comeback win over Brighton, sealed by an 83rd-minute Mason Greenwood header has them on the brink of rejoining European football’s elite once more next season.

The striker’s header made him United’s third-highest teenage scorer in the Premier LeagueCredit: Getty
The gap is now 11 points between them in second and fifth-placed Tottenham, who they meet next week.
United still have Liverpool and Leicester to play as well in their final eight games, but there does not look like being any squeaky bums at Old Trafford.
They had to recover from a wretched first-half performance to win this one.
Ex-United striker Danny Welbeck had given the visitors a 13th-minute lead.
But the Red Devils are used to biting back in the second period and after Marcus Rashford levelled with a superb sidefoot finish in the 62nd minute, Greenwood grabbed the winner.
So that’s three more goals from the United academy from which all the scorers graduated.
Welbeck did not give up scoring at Old Trafford after leaving in 2014…
Unfortunately for Manchester United his last three here have been for the opposition.

It has been too long since his rejection at the hands of Louis van Gaal for there to be any tempering of celebrations.
Particularly not when his header looked for a long time like it might put Brighton within touching distance of Premier League safety.
He added that to a winner he got here in the FA Cup quarter-final back in March 2015 for Arsenal.
He scored another for Arsenal in February 2016, a 3-2 defeat to the Gunners, and got one at the Emirates too in a 2-0 win in May 2017.
In scoring in this game the now veteran 30-year-old, became the first to get three Premier League goals against United after leaving them.
United had started sloppily and the goal came from them needlessly giving away possession.
Paul Pogba was the guilty man with a loose ball that Leandro Trossard snapped up. He fed it straight on to Pascal Gross, who released Neal Maupay down the right.
The cross was perfectly delivered, evading Victor Lindelof for Welbeck to power a header down.

Brighton demanded a penalty when Harry Maguire put an arm on Danny WelbeckCredit: Getty
Somehow Dean Henderson kept the point-blank effort out with his foot but the ball popped up invitingly for Welbeck to nod back past him.
It could have been more but for Henderson, who just six minutes later sprang to the air to tip over a powerful Lewis Dunk header.
Henderson was of course the big call on the day by Solskjaer, opting for him instead of David De Gea.
Henderson had performed well in a run of six games after De Gea had been given time off for the birth of his first child.
This was surely the biggest signal yet that he will be number one for the remaining league games – and next season too.
After ten years great service De Gea’s days here could now be numbered.
A few others could be as well if they keep performing like they did in the first period.
It brought them just one decent effort on goal when Greenwood hit the right-hand upright.
Otherwise they were like strangers going forward.
Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani in particular were just not on the same wavelength and seemed irritated with each other early on.
The hosts had to come back from behind again to tighten their grip on second placeCredit: Reuters
Welbeck reminded his first club of his striking pedigreeCredit: Reuters
Paul Pogba was too deep to have any influence going forward and Rashford just wasn’t seeing enough of the ball.
Solskjaer had been bellowing from the technical area and you can bet he was in the changing rooms at the break as well.
The response came with Rashford levelling things up.
Joel Veltman’s challenge for a high ball with Edinson Cavani only helped it into the path of Bruno Fernandes.
He tried to make up for his error by fouling Fernandes just outside the box.
But the Portuguese playmaker had been able to get the ball away and into the path of Rashford, who cooly side-footed a shot across Robert Sanchez and in.
Brighton were not done though and will feel more than a little aggrieved that neither Mike Dean nor VAR Peter Bankes thought they deserved a 70th-minute penalty.
Maupay played a ball in from the right and Welbeck stretched for it but was put off by Maguire.
The United captain, making his 100th appearance for the club, had his hand on his shoulder and appeared to hold him back as he tried but failed to make contact.
The Brighton players screamed penalty but Bankes and Dean – didn’t they do cinema ads? – said no.
Rashforddd… Level! Bruno Fernandes doing all the work, drawing defenders (and the foul 🙃), leaving the finish to United’s No. 1️⃣0️⃣Great finish, and game on 🤝 pic.twitter.com/sHvKZRbumw— Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) April 4, 2021

Brighton rocked, United went for the kill.
Fernandes had a thumping low shot spilled by Sanchez and Greenwood scooped the loose ball over. He had another go that went straight to the goalkeeper.
    Then the winner came.
Fernandes chipped a ball into the box, Pogba mishit his shot into the ground but the ball bounced up for Greenwood to head home from close range.
Lucky, yes, but United had upped their game in the second-half and the pressure finally told.

Former United greats Paul Ince and Dimitar Berbatov have both urged Old Trafford boss Solskjaer to swoop for Aguero.
But the Norwegian insisted no player should move between the rivals.
He said: “I wouldn’t expect any player who has played for a club for ten years to want to go to their local rivals. It’s not for me.
“When I played for Manchester United, if a rival club tried to sign me and I had gone — well, where’s the loyalty?
“Loyalty is one of the values I really, really put highly.
“I know we are professionals but when you play for United you don’t go to City.

“We have had examples of that and I didn’t really agree with it.
“I won’t name names but you all know who I mean — enough said.”
Aguero has won four Premier League titles, an FA Cup and five League Cups during his amazing City career, including his iconic winning goal that broke Red Devil hearts in 2012.
And many believe he could add some much needed quality to United’s front line.
However, Carlos Tevez enraged Reds fans when he controversially switched to the Etihad in 2009.
Treble-winning keeper Peter Schmeichel’s move to City seven years earlier also left everyone at United fuming.

Schmeichel, then 36, quit Old Trafford for Sporting Lisbon after the 1999 Treble, claiming the Premier League was too demanding.
Yet after two years he returned to England with Aston Villa and after 12 months joined City for a season.
Solskjaer would not refer to him by name and it soured relations with his one-time team-mate.

Jesse Lingard’s transfer fee could rocket to £40m as West Ham face missing out on Man Utd loanee in summer

WEST HAM could miss out on signing Jesse Lingard — because they failed to put a ‘buy’ clause in his loan deal.Manchester United were ready to offload Lingard for as little as £20million this summer when they agreed to let the attacker play for the Hammers.
Jesse Lingard could command a high price if sold by Manchester United in the summerCredit: EPA
But his form since then — scoring five in seven appearances — has seen him rocket back into contention for a place in England’s Euros squad.
And that is now forcing United bosses to consider almost doubling the price.
That causes a problem for West Ham because they were unable to secure a guaranteed option to make his loan deal permanent during negotiations.
And if his fee climbs towards £40m, it may be too much for them to pay.
There is hope that the 28-year-old has enjoyed himself so much at the London Stadium that he tells United he wants to make the move there on a full-time basis.
But Lingard will have little control on any fee United demand.
BETTING SPECIAL: 40/1 ON A PENALTY FOR EITHER SIDE IN MAN UTD vs BRIGHTON

West Ham boss David Moyes said: “I’m sure at this moment in time we will say yes, we’d love to have Jesse, because of how well he’s doing.
“But we’ve still got nine games to go to judge and assess Jesse, just like United will have a period to think about do they want to sell or keep him?
“That would be a decision we would all need to get to but, no, there’s nothing in place at the moment.”

Jose Maria Ramos, Sergio’s father, and mother Paqui Garcia spoke to Spanish TV show El Chiringuito in the week.
Both were effusive on the 35-year-old’s chances of staying in Madrid, stating that he ‘absolutely’ is excited to sign a new deal.
Jose said: “He is not worried at all, he is calm as always.
“He is totally sure that he will continue.
“The family decides little, but there is time for everything.”
Paqui added that Ramos is looking ‘great’ before stating: “Let him stay at Real Madrid.”
Manchester United have been linked with a move for the Spaniard in their pursuit of a new star defender.
Madrid are said to have offered reduced terms as part of a one-year extension offer to the club captain.

The coronavirus pandemic has hit the club’s finances hard but big-money moves for Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe are still rumoured to be in the works.
Ramos will miss Real’s Champions League quarter-final with Liverpool this month after feeling pain in his calf on Spain duty.
Saturday’s win over Eibar was the 19th game he has missed this season due to injury.
The veteran wrote on Instagram after news of the problem broke: “To be honest it’s been a tough few weeks for me.
