Man Utd in Erling Haaland transfer blow as Dortmund chief Zorc claims he will STAY at club even without Champions League

MANCHESTER UNITED’S hopes of signing Erling Haaland this summer have been hit after Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc insisted their star man will stay.Just hours after United’s humiliating European Super League about-turn, they have been handed another hammer blow.

Dortmund chief Michael Zorc says that the 20-year-old striker won’t be moving anywhere – even if the Germans miss out on Champions League qualification.
Speaking to Sky Germany, Zorc said: “We made a clear statement about the Haaland cause.
“The decision will not be made without Borussia Dortmund. No matter where we end up, Erling will continue to play for us.”
The Norwegian international has been in stunning form this season, scoring 35 goals in 37 games in all competitions for Dortmund.
His agent, the controversial Mino Raiola, even embarked on a world tour to meet prospective clubs interested in the free-scoring sensation.
Real Madrid and Barcelona were visited, with the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool also targeted.
But the latest statement from Zorc appears to confirm the striker is going nowhere.
And whether United would be able to pay in excess of £100million for Haaland is another thing.
The Red Devils, along with Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham, purchased around £8m in equity stakes in the European Super League before its sensational collapse.

The ‘Big Six’ are now unlikely to be able to reclaim the £8m up-front payment AND are set to face monster fines.
It’s believed the English clubs will be hit in the pocket rather than be punished via points deductions or exclusion.
On top of that, Man Utd were just one club to see their share price plummet amid the controversy.

On Tuesday, a number of supporters turned up on their club’s doorstep to demand they backtrack from the controversial plot.
Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool have signed up to the ESL alongside three Spanish and three Italian teams.
The proposals will take clubs out of the Champions League and into a new closed-shop setup, where teams qualify regardless of their performance.
Uefa, Fifa, the UK Government and the Premier League are among the bodies to threaten the plotters with significant punishment, including throwing them out of this year’s competitions.
While European football’s governing body and 14 other top-flight English clubs met on Tuesday, protests continued.
Outside Liverpool’s home of Anfield, banners reading ‘FSG OUT’ and ‘SUPER GREED’ were hung up to condemn the club’s owners.

The Reds’ home will no longer feature fan banners across the empty seats after supporters’ groups demanded they be removed.
Blues fans are set to appear en masse outside their home to demonstrate before Tuesday’s clash with Brighton, echoing Monday’s display before Leeds’ draw with Liverpool.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, supporters have been largely unable to make their feelings known in person with games played behind closed doors.

One placard attached to the gates at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium simply read ‘Shame on you’ alongside two club scarves.
The protests were not limited to England with a message from Barcelona fans posted onto the Camp Nou.

Man Utd verdict: Quality of Pogba and Rashford to much for Burnley – but Red Devils too happy to sleepwalk through games

MANCHESTER UNITED can count themselves lucky at finally finding a way to put Burnley away at home.It took a massive deflection to prevent Sean Dyche’s team making it five matches in a row without losing at Old Trafford.

Mason Greenwood will be credited with United’s first two goals, but his second effort probably wouldn’t have troubled Bailey Peacock-Farrell if it hadn’t taken a wicked bounce off the inside of Jack Cork’s leg.
The third goal from Edinson Cavani put an undeserved gloss on the result, with Burnley hopelessly exposed after throwing everyone forward in search of an equaliser.
But if United are to put any pressure on City – who are now ‘only’ eight points ahead with six games to go – they will probably have to win ugly from time to time.
It would also help if they were not guilty of sleep-walking through the first-half so often.
They were guilty of it again here, with United offering precious little threat early on, despite the fact that Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba both seemed to be capable of causing the Clarets plenty of problems.
Maybe Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should deliver the half-time rollickings that seem to pay dividends so often before kick off instead!

United were handed a reminder of the threat Burnley pose after just 15 seconds, with Chris Wood heading into the empty net with Dean Henderson stranded in no man’s land.
VAR’s decision that Wood was fractionally offside prompted a huge sigh of relief. If that ‘goal’ had stood, there could easily have been a different outcome.
But Greenwood’s coolness in front of goal, and his uncanny ability to buy room by cutting in from the right before shifting the ball onto that deadly left foot, are potent weapons.
Maybe, just maybe, there is a sting to come in the title battle after all.

Man Utd 3 Burnley 1: Greenwood brace rescues Red Devils and sends Solskjaer’s men eight points behind City in title race

MASON GREENWOOD struck twice in the second-half to keep Manchester United’s faint title hopes flickering. The Red Devils looked set to drop points at home against Burnley for a fifth straight season when James Tarkowski headed them level early in the second-half.

But just six minutes from time Greenwood collected a pass from Paul Pogba and his shot was deflected off Jack Cork before beating Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
This win cuts City’s lead at the top to eight points with six games apiece remaining – and while it remains possible United are clearly not for chucking in the towel.
As seems to be the case most weeks, the Red Devils began slowly.
After just ten seconds, Chris Wood beat Dean Henderson to a cross from the right by Matt Lowton and his header dropped into the unguarded net.
Fortunately for the England hopeful, his blushes were spared by the linesman’s flag and VAR showed the Kiwi was narrowly off.
United had their chances too with Paul Pogba heading wide and Bruno Fernandes just off target with a curling shot.
But as has been the case too often this season, United were lacklustre in the first-half.
And for a Burnley side who were unbeaten in their last four visits to Old trafford, there was little to worry about.

At the break Solskjaer threw on Edinson Cavani to replace an ineffective Fred and straight away things started to happen.
Rashford left Lowton floundering with a cheeky nutmeg on the left and then squared a ball into the box.
Fernandes cleverly dummied it and there was Greenwood arriving at the back-post to score his third goal in three league matches.
It was a brilliant goal from the home side but their lead lasted only two minutes – and the equaliser was as straightforward as they come.
Ashley Westwood swung over a corner from the left and James Tarkowski got ahead of Harry Maguire to nod home his first goal of the season.

That was the 1000th goal conceded by United since the start of the Premier League in 1992 – making them the 11th club to do so.
Both sides had chances to win it from there but Burnley – whose relegation fight had been boosted by Arsenal’s late equaliser against Fulham – were determined to hang on.
But United got the bit of luck they needed with Cork’s deflection – meaning City cannot start popping the champagne corks just yet.
There was even time for a third goal which slightly flattered United – Cavani tapping in a low cross from fellow sub Donny van de Beek.

And his agent, Mino Raiola is said to have told senior members of the United hierarchy his client will sign a deal, but ONLY if it’s worth a staggering half a million per week, according to the Daily Star.
Should United agree to Pogba’s demands, it would make him the highest paid player in the club’s history.
The Daily Star also claim that PSG, Real Madrid and Juventus have all been informed how much it would cost to secure his signature.
Incredibly, with image rights included to that base wage Pogba could net somewhere in the region of £800,000-a-week.
Pogba and Raiola are aware that his next move will probably be the last lucrative deal he is likely to be offered.
The Red Devils signed the midfielder for a club-record fee of £90million in 2016.
But during his time with the Premier League giants he is yet to win a league title, with only EFL Cup and the Europa League winners’ medals to his name.
This season, Pogba was slow out the traps as he struggled for form earlier in the campaign.
However, since the turn of the year his performances have improved – and he recently captained the team in the quarter-final Europa League win over Granada.

Mason Greenwood thriving after striking relationship with ‘top example’ Edinson Cavani, reveals Man Utd boss Solskjaer

MASON GREENWOOD will look back and realise that this season marked his coming of age in more ways than one.The striker’s campaign began with public humiliation when he and Phil Foden were sent home from Iceland by England boss Gareth Southgate for breaching Covid protocols.

The pair have drummed up a striking relationship, says Ole Gunnar SolskjaerCredit: PA
They invited two models into their Reykjavik hotel room having made their Three Lions debut last September.
Up until that point Greenwood, 19, looked every bit the budding superstar — just like his partner in crime from the other side of Manchester.
Yet while Foden, 20, went on to prove he truly is a prodigy with City and has since scored an England double, ironically against Iceland, Greenwood’s career went into the freezer.
The teenager scored 18 goals in his breakthrough season but was clearly hit hard by that England shame. He managed just four goals in 38 appearance for the Red Devils after being told to pack his bags by Southgate.
In many of those games he looked a shadow of the two-footed attacker who terrified defenders.
While Foden flourished it appeared that the weight of that misguided hotel invite got to Greenwood and he has not been in a Southgate squad since.
Last month he even found himself back with England’s Under-21s before being forced to withdraw with injury.
But thanks to the help of veteran Edinson Cavani he has emerged into the light with three goals in his last five games.

He scored and had an assist in the 3-1 win over Tottenham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is delighted to see the change in him.
The Old Trafford boss said: “He has come through that difficult patch as a stronger person and a better player.”
Uruguayan Cavani may well quit the club at the end of the season when his one-year deal ends but the 34-year-old will leave having had a major influence on Greenwood’s development.
If anyone has helped the Bradford-born striker battle through his problems it is the ex-Paris Saint-Germain star.
Solskjaer added: “Playing with Edinson Cavani has been a top example for him.
“Edi leads by example even though the language barrier has made it a bit difficult.
“But Mason and Edi have struck up a very good relationship. I can see that Edi appreciates Mason’s talent, his hunger and his willingness to learn.
“And in Cavani, he is learning from one of the very best.
Solskjaer has praised Greenwood’s form since breaking into the first-teamCredit: Getty
“It’s like when I speak about having Sir Alex Ferguson as a manager. If I couldn’t learn from him then there was no point in going into management.
“If Mason, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial can’t learn off Edinson then they can’t learn from anyone. He is a very good example to every single one of them.”
Greenwood has been raved about by United insiders as a natural-born striker ever since he joined the club as a six-year-old.
But Solskjaer goes into Sunday’s visit of Burnley determined that even if Cavani does leave United Greenwood will not be rushed into the role as main striker.
He insisted: “Maybe in the future he can play as a central striker, but I still think that’s a few years away.
“Being a centre-forward in the Premier League is probably the hardest position to play.
“At the moment, I think Mason is more suited to playing that wide role, dropping into pockets, finding space and running in behind.
“I don’t want him with his back to goal and having two centre-backs up his backside.
Mason isn’t just a natural finisher — he’s a natural footballer. He is so smooth and he’s matured so much this season.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

“I think we have found a good way to develop him and he might end up as a No 9.
“Mason isn’t just a natural finisher — he’s a natural footballer. He is so smooth and he’s matured so much this season.
“You can see his body has developed and he’s getting stronger. His consistency is getting better and he will start scoring more goals, that’s for sure.
“I have been really impressed and happy with his development this season.”
