Meet the man who could have bought Man Utd for just £10million in 1989, and missed out on a business now worth £3billion

TODAY, Manchester United is a business worth around £3billion.They are one of the world’s most valuable sports teams, thanks in part to a dominance of the British game in the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s, as well as clever marketing that means their name is recognised around the globe.

But in 1989, a then much-maligned club and starved of success, the Red Devils were on the verge of being taken over for just £10million.
Property developer Michael Knighton, now 69, had announced the takeover a day before their opening game of the season at Old Trafford against Arsenal.
Then, on the Saturday, he stood in front of the Stretford End and took in the cheers from some 48,000 fans before the game, appearing in an official team training kit and expertly juggling a football on the pitch.
His plans were to turn Manchester United into a £150million business. He saw that with TV money on the horizon from an expected Sky TV bid, it could be a lucrative money-spinner.
However, behind-the-scenes a secret plot schemed by the United hierarchy was desperate to dissuade Knighton from completing a deal.
Some were said to be miffed by his flamboyant appearance on the sacred Theatre of Dreams turf before the opening Division One game of the 1989-90 season.
While, private documents outlining a blueprint for his plans appeared at a well-known newspaper mogul’s home and ended up putting pressure on Knighton to withdraw his bid, thus ending his dream.
    BOARD RESENTMENT
A former school teacher, Knighton made his fortune building a property portfolio in the 1980s.
And in Manchester United he quite rightly saw their potential as an investment, and understood that ex-chief executive Martin Edwards would entertain an offer.

“The raison d’etre was very simple,” Knighton revealed.
“There was a lot of resentment against the board. Edwards was incredibly unpopular and desperate to exit. The business was losing money and home gates had fallen to as low as 18-20,000.”
United’s vast fanbase was key to Knighton’s theory. It’s what encouraged him to walk onto the pitch and orchestrate the crowd like a master politician would his voters.
“I wanted to show the fans I was a football man first and a businessman second,” he said.
“I wanted to bridge the gap between the boardroom and the terraces. Yes, it was novel. It was unorthodox. I knew it would attract interest and criticism. But I didn’t care. I needed the fans on my side more than I needed Bobby Charlton or Alex Ferguson, whose job was on the line at that time.
“I knew there was a massive captive market. If you are going to exploit that market, not in a pejorative sense, to sell them everything in order to generate the profits to buy any player in the world, you need them on your side.
“Look at what is happening now with the current owners and how the sponsors are being lobbied and some fans are not buying memorabilia and shirts.
“Of course I loved it. Who wouldn’t? Despite how it all turned out, I don’t regret going on that pitch and if I had £5bn to buy Manchester United today, I would do exactly the same again. I was fulfilling every schoolboy dream in the world.
“If you look at the pictures of that day and the smiles on the faces of the fans in the stadium, it worked.”
    ‘NOT VERY UNITED’
Knighton’s entertaining turn at Old Trafford, that would’ve given Simply Red singer, United fan and 80s icon Mick Hucknall a run for his money even at that time, riled the stiff board.

“Ridiculous”, one senior official called it – and it was at this point it was said that Edwards began to regret his decision to sell to the extravagant businessman.
Knighton’s way wasn’t the United way, despite Edwards revealing in his programme notes before a game against Norwich he wanted to sell the club and Knighton’s money would be put to use in developing the ground.
“It is not a secret that we have wished to develop the Stretford End for a number of years now,” Edwards wrote.
“The budget of £7.5m made me realise the commencement of the work is light years away.
“What Mr Knighton’s offer has brought us is the opportunity to develop the stadium as well as the playing staff and this offer was impossible to refuse.”
But privately Edwards was looking for a way out.
    SECRET DOSSIER
With every TV appearance Knighton made talking about buying United, he irked senior figures more.
Bizarrely, a document known as his ‘blueprint’ to help United become a £150million operation was mysteriously left at the house of newspaper owner Eddy Shah, who was a pal of the United hierarchy.
Shah immediately got in touch and senior board members rushed to his Macclesfield home.

Even United legend Bobby Charlton arrived at the scene, and was said to have had a calming influence on Shah’s aggressive dogs purely by his presence.
The dossier was supposed to be private. The fact it had got out put Knighton under pressure to withdraw his bid.
Knighton was offered a place on the board, if he opted out of a deal. He accepted.
For the next three years, he was a quiet influence in the boardroom, until 1992 when he bought Carlisle, before finally walking away from football 10 years later.
After that period, United went on to dominate the domestic game and adding European trophies to their trophy cabinet.
“It is extraordinary how Martin Edwards has claimed credit for what happened in the following decade after my involvement. Unbelievable,” Knighton said..
“I kept my mouth shut and my head down because my reputation had been hammered and it is virtually impossible to change a public image.

Now 69, Knighton isn’t involved in football anymoreCredit: The Sun

“But Martin and the other people on the board decided to hide behind the fiasco Michael Knighton caused and claim the credit themselves.
“If they could really see what was going to happen, why did they agree to sell the club for £10m?”
    Now, we’ll never know.

Speaking to the media ahead of the clash, Solskjaer said: “He’s had a good week with us here.
“He’ll definitely be on the pitch at some point, that’s for sure.”
Solskjaer would not be drawn as to whether the Portugal star would start the game at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo is ready to feature having had a pre-season with Juventus and also having played the full game for Portugal in a World Cup qualifier against Ireland last week.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has been training at United since Tuesday.
Solskjaer said he expects Ronaldo to play at the top level until he is 40 years old, like another United great in Ryan Giggs.

In this summer’s most sensational of transfers, Ronaldo made an emotional return to Old Trafford, signing a two year deal with the option of a third.
United managed to get the prolific striker for just £12m.
Solskjaer has promised Manchester United fans an even better Ronaldo than they had before.
The gaffer says he still has the same speed but has become a better all round player and one of the best finishers ever.
He’s in such good nick still and will be looking in the next few years to play and score as many goals as he canOle Gunnar SolskjaerOn Cristiano Ronaldo
Solskjaer said: “He has evolved as a player. I don’t think you’ll see see those 18,19, 20 step overs before he goes past you but he still has them, the step over, shift and shoot.
“He has developed into one of the most accurate finishers I have seen.
“What he developed in his years at Real Madrid has impressed us all.
“He is one of the best of course in the air, his timing and desire to get on the end of crosses is second to non.
“He still hits the target 99 times out of 100 when he shoots from outside the box as well.
“He knows the game more, definitely, he knows which positions to drop into and when to run in behind and he is still as quick it looks like from the stats.
“He’s in such good nick still and will be looking in the next few years to play and score as many goals as he can.
“We don’t have his skill set in the team, the mix, no one has really. He is one of the best players that’s ever played the game.”
    FRED IN AWE
And he has already left his team-mates stunned by his fitness levels at the club’s Carrington training centre.
Midfielder Fred was asked if the 36-year-old looks sharp in training to which he replied: “Of course, yeah!
“He is an amazing player, you know the difference when you look at Cristiano Ronaldo.
“With the ball, without the ball, he works a lot and it’s so good for us. We are so happy to have Cristiano here.
“We know who Cristiano Ronaldo is because he likes to win, he pushes everyone, so you need to be at your best to get with him.
“It’s so good for us because he pushes everyone, we can win every game, so it’s so important.”
He become a fan favourite during a six-year stint at the club in which he won the Premier League three times, the Champions League, the FA Cup, the League Cup twice and the Fifa Club World Cup.

He scored 118 goals in 292 games before leaving in 2009 to join Real Madrid for £80million.
He spent nine seasons in Spain before moving to Juventus in Italy in 2018.
Ronaldo — dubbed CR7 — has already told of his happiness at reclaiming the club’s No 7 shirt and declared: “I’m really glad and looking forward to starting my first game.”

In a career that saw him play 34 times for his country, Djemba-Djemba’s last club side was Swiss team Football Club Vallorbe-Ballaigues.
But he’s best known for his time at Manchester United, where he played 20 times – and was on the bench for Cristiano Ronaldo’s first debut.
Djemba-Djemba is now focusing on his own academy in Cameroon.
Talking about his decision to hang up the boots, Djemba-Djemba said: “I can say to you today, that I’m officially retiring from playing football.
“I have an academy in Cameroon and I am going to focus on trying to help educate the young players there on how to become a footballer, and how to build a successful career as a footballer.
    “Today, I’m stopping playing football.”

Djemba-Djemba arrived at United with high hopes and then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson believed he had unearthed a real talent.
But things just didn’t work out for the midfielder – but he is delighted he got the chance to run out at Old Trafford.
He added: “I loved my team at Manchester United. But it was disappointing, it was difficult.
“Everybody who has a career has a chance, and I have to say I was lucky to play with all of the players that I got to play with, and I loved having the experience of playing with those players at United.
“It was hard leaving Manchester United, and it definitely affected my mental health.
“I left because I didn’t get much time playing, so I went to Aston Villa, but it was so difficult to leave Manchester because United was like my second family.
“They gave me everything. They gave me my career, so it was definitely difficult having to leave United.”
    WANTS TO HUG FERGIE
And of the legendary Fergie, Djemba-Djemba added:” I think I could have played a big role if I had more time, but that is life.
“But today, I’m happy. I’ll say thank-you to Alex Ferguson every single day, because he changed my life.
“I’d love to see Ferguson to give him a hug. I saw him in Denmark in 2011 when I was playing there, and gave him a big hug when I saw him.”

Man Utd face Youri Tielemans transfer battle with Real Madrid and Barcelona also ‘monitoring’ Leicester star

REAL MADRID and Barcelona have joined Manchester United in the bidding war for Leicester star Youri Tielemans, reports suggest.Tielemans has impressed at King Power Stadium ever since the Foxes signed him on a club record £40million fee in 2019.
Leicester star Youri Tielemans has been linked with a move to Manchester United, Barcelona and Real MadridCredit: AFP
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims that a host of top clubs are now keeping tabs on the midfielder ahead of the next summer transfer window.
Romano reports that United, Real and Barca are among the Belgium international’s suitors.
The Italian journalist added that that this could be one of the most prominent transfer sagas of the coming summer.
United will reportedly make a move for the 24-year-old if they lose Paul Pogba next year.
Pogba’s contract with the Red Devils runs out in June and he doesn’t look close to signing a new deal any time soon.
The star midfielder has previously been linked with a move to Real, who are still keeping tabs on him.

Thus, a potential departure by the France international could clear the path for United to land Tielemans.
According to ESPN, though, West Ham star Declan Rice will also be included on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s transfer list should the Old Trafford manager lose Pogba.
Tielemans has amassed a total of 18 goals and 19 assists in 112 appearances for Leicester across all competitions.
But none of his goals was more critical than his screamer during last season’s FA Cup final, which led to victory over Chelsea at Wembley.

Wayne Rooney tips pal Cristiano Ronaldo to still be fab at 40 for Man Utd as Portuguese star prepares for second debut

WAYNE ROONEY has tipped his old pal Cristiano Ronaldo to still be fab at 40 for Manchester United. The Reds’ greatest ever goalscorer says the five-time Ballon D’Or winner is capable of emulating Ryan Giggs’ achievement in continuing to play Premier League football for United beyond his 40th birthday.

The Portuguese superstar is preparing to make his second debut for the Red Devils on SaturdayCredit: Getty
The Portuguese legend, who turns 37 in February, negotiated a three-year deadline-day deal, and is expected to make his eagerly anticipated second debut for United against Newcastle tomorrow – 12 years after his last appearance for the club.
Rooney says United fans will see a very different Ronaldo to the swashbuckling winger who blew defenders away with his explosive pace and trickery during his formative years at Old Trafford.
But he claims Ron’s eye for goal and poacher’s instinct will see him still terrorising defenders and flexing those famous abs when he hits 40.
Rooney, the scorer of a staggering 253 goals for United, said: “Cristiano’s coming back into the best league in the world, so he knows it is going to be challenging.
“And, of course, coming back to Manchester United, he’ll want to prove himself again at the club, and he sets the highest standards for himself.
“But if there’s one player in the world who can live up to that challenge, it’s Cristiano.

BETTING SPECIAL GET RONALDO TO SCORE AGAINST NEWCASTLE ANYTIME AT 30/1 OR FIRST AT 50/1
“I think he’s a completely different player to when he was last playing in the Premier League.
“The last time he played here he was more of a runner, a great dribbler, with pace and power, whereas now he’s a goalscorer.
“His game has adapted dramatically since then and I’m not at all surprised he is still going strong at 36.
“His ability is obviously one thing, but he’s also looked after himself massively, you can see the shape he’s in, he’s still in great condition.
“So it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s playing until he’s 40, like Giggsy did, and still scoring goals.”
Rooney’s United scoring record may not be in imminent danger as Ronaldo’s 118 goals in 292 games for United leaves him 135 goals off his pace.

Wayne Rooney, now manager at Derby, quit playing at the age of 35Credit: PA
However United’s master marksman says he admires his mate’s courage in putting himself back in the firing line in the most difficult position on the pitch.
Rooney retired at 35 to prove himself as a manager with Derby County.
But he had moved back into midfield long before then to preserve his legs in his twilight seasons, before heading to the Championship.
It’s a common route for even the greatest players, with midfielders also moving back into defence.
Yet Ronaldo has taken the opposite route and moved from wide areas, into the heart of the action to pit his wits against some of the best defenders in world football.
Rooney believes there are only two players in world football capable of cutting it at that level of intensity.

And he says United’s younger generation might have to run the odd extra mile to help out the old boy!
“The general rule is the older you get, the further back you play,” Rooney explained.
“With Cristiano it’s different and it’s the same with Lionel Messi. Those two players are probably the only two at this level who only play in one half of the pitch.
“It’s box-to-box, high energy defending which uses all your energy. But when you have the ball in one half of the pitch, it’s all about scoring goals.
“The rest of his teammates will have to work a little harder. But if it’s anything like the last time – towards the last two years of playing with him – the team allowed him to do that because Cristiano scores you goals and wins you games.”
