‘Cristiano is an absolute genius’ – Ronaldo’s old trainer reveals how Man Utd star stays in shape ahead of 37th birthday

CRISTIANO RONALDO’S ex-trainer heralded the legend’s upcoming 37th birthday by tipping the ‘genius’ to play until his mid-40s.Manchester United’s power development coach Mick Clegg believes only Ryan Giggs came close to matching Ron’s fitness regime.
Man Utd icon Cristiano Ronaldo reckons he has the body and fitness of a super athlete a decade younger than his 36 years

And Clegg claims Portugal’s five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo has now found the perfect routine for physical and emotional well-being.
He told the Mirror: “Cristiano is a genius, an absolute genius.
“He learned a lot in the early days about how to manage his body.
“Not just physically, but mentally, emotionally and spiritually, too.
“He knows how to balance his food and he’s consistent in everything he does.
“The only person I’ve found as consistent was Ryan Giggs, which was why he played on until he was 40.
“Cristiano will want to go beyond the 40 mark. He’ll be hoping he can play until his mid-40s.”
Ex-Real Madrid and Juventus attacker Ronaldo, who will be 37 on Saturday, has stated he aims to keep playing until 41 – a year longer than Giggs did.

And Ronaldo could be involved after maintaining his meticulous fitness programme in the past week when with his family to Dubai.
After rejoining United last August he had his £50,000 cryotherapy ice chamber transported from Italy to his rented mansion.
And that’s the sort of dedication Clegg believes will be cold comfort to defenders for several more seasons.

Man Utd transfer blow after Declan Rice reveals plan to ‘stay close to home’ as West Ham star hints at Chelsea move

MANCHESTER UNITED target Declan Rice has hinted he wants to stay in London as he gushed about his childhood love for Chelsea.West Ham midfielder plans to ‘stay close to home’ amid speculation over a summer move.

Rice also revealed his bromance with boyhood idol and Chelsea legend John Terry is as strong as ever.
The 27-cap Londoner, 23, has been regarded as a potential dream signing for United in their search for a stylish anchorman.
But on Gary Neville’s Overlap podcast Rice underlined how settled he is – living just seven miles from Stamford Bridge.
Strolling together in Kingston, South West London, he told ex-United defender Nev: “Yeah, I’m here all the time.
“I’ve always wanted to stay close to this place, I feel like I don’t want to lose my roots.”
And he was equally frank about his upbringing as a Blues’ fan.

Rice said: “Yeah, growing up the whole family was Chelsea.
“I feel like it’s out there – everyone knows, it’s well documented.
“But I feel like when you play for a club like West Ham you become really affiliated to it, and there’s part of me now – and my family as well – that is a massive West Ham fan.”
But Rice continues to look up to former England centre-back Terry.
That bond grew after JT called him to offer support when the Blues released Rice aged 14 after seven years at their academy.
Asked who his idol had been, he replied: “‘John Terry. I speak to him a lot. I speak to him all the time really.
“For me growing up being a Chelsea fan, having a season ticket there, going to all the games, being in the academy.
Old Trafford legend Gary Neville was told by Declan Rice that the Hammer wants to stay close to his London rootsCredit: Getty
“Just him, looking at him, everything was JT as a kid. JT26 on the back.
“Even when I was younger I said if I make it I want to be No 26, but I feel like as I’ve got older now I’ve grown out of that – it would look a bit creepy!
‘He was amazing for me when I got released as well, he picked up the phone – he didn’t have to, I was only 14 at the time and I was speaking to my idol – so yeah, we’ve got a good relationship.”
Terry quickly responded to Rice’s comments, posting a link to the chat with Neville on social media and adding: “Love ya mate.”
Now many will expect Rice to return to Stamford Bridge and approach the heights there JT reached.

Jesse Lingard deserves better treatment at Man Utd… look how many chances Paul Pogba gets to impress

THE ONLY question surrounding the Jesse Lingard affair is which statement appears to more damning.Rio Ferdinand has piled into the debate which followed Manchester United’s decision to ask Newcastle United for a potential total of £15.5M to take him on loan.
Jesse Lingard looks like he will have an uneventful end to his Man Utd career
The former Old Trafford defensive king pin says it is “crazy” that Lingard is now in limbo until his contract expires this summer – and that the situation is his own fault.
Rio pulled punches on the subject, declaring : “I wouldn’t be happy if I was a player.
“It’s almost like he’s wasted a whole year of his career, a whole season of his career has been wasted
“He hasn’t played hardly any games, hasn’t been involved.
“Jesse Lingard went to West Ham and done fantastically well.
“Everyone would have wanted to take him outside of probably the top four… and then he goes back to Man United and doesn’t play.

United legend Rio Ferdinand has been left stunned at Lingard’s predicament
“I was just baffled that he went back in the first place after having that taste of success, that taste of playing every week.
“Either he was promised by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he’d get more game time. I don’t know what it was.”
Speaking on his FIVE YouTube channel one of the great defenders of his generation who made 455 United adds : “He’s never going to play games. It’s just crazy.”
Solskjaer’s successor Ralf Rangnick, meanwhile, did not mention Lingard by name when it came to explaining why he might continue to use a player even if he is in the last months of his contract.
For the German it all comes down to attitude – which is why he will still utilise the talents of Paul Pogba.
The Frenchman, of course, could be far more influential as he runs down the clock and the talents of he and Lingard do not compare.
But there is a reason why Pogba is still welcome while Lingard is not, as indicated by Rangnick who declares: “For me, it’s not a question if a player has an expiring contract.
“The question is how much does he still want to be a part of this group?
Paul Pogba seems like he will be the pick for boss Ralf Rangnick when back fit
“How much does he still feel emotionally and physically on board?”
Rangnick points out that these final months of the season, if nothing else, allow Pogba to showcase his talents to interested parties.
The same reasoning should therefore apply to Lingard.
Except the attacker knows he is not really wanted and so why would he feel physically and emotionally on board?.
Before he left for West Ham he had been given only two starts by Solskjaer last season – in a 3-0 EFL Cup win over Luton and a 1-0 FA Cup third round victory over Watford.
During this campaign he has played a total of 89 Prem minutes, all as sub over nine games , and only one of those minutes was under Rangnick after the Baby-Faced Assasin got the bullet.
Yet at the start of it Gareth Southgate saw fit to give him three more caps – against Andorra twice and Hungary
United, it is said, are making an example of him – showing other disaffected players that they won’t be messed around by those running down the days on their contracts while awaiting big signing – on fees for joining new clubs when they become free agents.
Yet Lingard has been at the club since he was seven years of age and deserves better treatment than being held out to dry.
Lingard was a revelation at West Ham and they were keen to bring him back
It so happens that his breakthrough season came two years after Sir Alex Ferguson retired – cue the entrances of Moyes, Louis Van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Solskjaer and now Rangnick in the line of those trying to fill the void left by the great Scot.
Cue United’s often scattergun approach to bringing in new signings with home-grown players like Lingard becoming the collateral damage of an approach that barely hit a barn door.
Little wonder that he became disillusioned and even bitter.
True enough, he could have asked for a transfer outright and Ferdinand suggests he should have done exactly that.
Yet he began the season in hope, with those three caps, having been told by Solskjaer that his loan move had put him back in the frame.
Instead, thanks to the £73M arrival of Jadon Sancho and the grand return of Cristiano Ronaldo, he found himself marginalised again.
Some of this is his fault, for sure. He could and should have done more to become a big player.
Lingard enjoyed some good times at Old Trafford – but it is ending in the worst way
Questions were asked privately about his focus and indeed attitude.
But if that was the case and there were doubts about him he should have been sold.
And he should also have been loaned out last month but the Old Trafford hierarchy tried the cynical approach with Newcastle’s fabulously wealthy new owners.
But even the Saudis, with all the football money in the world, were not going to be taken as fools.
And so Lingard sits and waits while his club feels good about itself for trying to get value for him.
Had they not been so greedy in their asking price of £30M to West Ham last summer they would have got a decent wedge.
    Meanwhile Pogba will play on.
But then again, they want the Frenchman to stay for the World Cup winner is a means to an end.
He could help United into the top four, aid Champions League process and – forgive the cynicism – have a huge say in the German being made manager on a permanent basis.
Ferdinand may point the finger at his former team mate but his former club are just as culpable.
And if Lingard is not thinking that he is the victim of double standards then he should be.

French newspaper Le Parisien is now reporting that the Argentine’s last hope is landing the Champions League this season.
But his future will hinge on whether they progress past 13-time winners Real Madrid in the last-16.
PSG host the Spanish side on February 15 before travelling to the Bernabeu on March 9.
The Mirror reports that Pochettino is the ‘number one candidate’ to take over from interim manager Ralf Rangnick at Old Trafford.
And Old Trafford chiefs are now ‘growing increasingly confident’ that they will get their man.
The German is expected to move into a consultancy role at the end of the season.

Pochettino has 18 months left on his PSG deal after extending his contract until 2023 in the summer.
The 49-year-old was heavily linked with the United hot seat before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got the job permanently after Jose Mourinho was sacked in 2019.
Rangnick then took the reins at United on an interim basis after Solskjaer was axed in November.

In the event of Pochettino being sacked or leaving, PSG could turn to three-time Champions League-winning manager Zinedine Zidane.
The French icon was being touted as a potential replacement for Pochettino when United tried to prize him away from PSG in November.
But a move failed to materialise and Pochettino stayed put.

Man Utd ‘turned down Boubacar Kamara transfer opportunity to fix midfield woes due to uncertainty over Rangnick future’

MANCHESTER UNITED rejected Boubacar Kamara, Denis Zakaria and Julian Alvarez in January due to uncertainty over Ralf Rangnick’s future. That’s transfer guru Fabrizio Romano’s claim as it’s thought United want to delay splashing out until naming a permanent boss in the summer.

Another midfielder, Denis Zakaria, ended up at Juventus after being linked with Manchester United and ArsenalCredit: Getty
Instead French midfielder Kamara stayed with Marseille, Juventus signed Arsenal target Zakaria from Borussia Monchengladbach and Argentina striker Alvarez joined Manchester City.
Turning down the chance to recruit Kamara might stun Old Trafford fans as it’s understood interim chief Rangnick’s priority is to find such an anchorman.
The departures of Donny van de Beek to Everton and Anthony Martial to Sevilla were United’s only real activity in January.
And the Red Devils reportedly blocked temporary moves for England midfielder Jesse Lingard and second-choice keeper Dean Henderson.
Rangnick will play a key role at the end of the season when United make a permanent appointment following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking in November.
And the German is said to be compiling a breakdown of United’s individual and tactical issues, as well as a list of potential targets.
Romano also believes United said no to Alvarez ‘many times’.
The 22-year-old went on to join neighbours City for £17m on a five-and-a-half-year deal before rejoining River Plate on loan.

Meanwhile, Swiss midfielder Zakaria had been linked to Premier League giants, especially Arsenal and United, for several months.
But Juve nipped in as they were reportedly the only club willing to pay a fee for the 25-year-old six months before his contract expires.
Rangnick will now look to Paul Pogba to regain full fitness in the second half of the campaign.
But the German has admitted the French World Cup winner could still end up leaving, with Real Madrid and Juventus in the running.

Man Utd flops who were a success after leaving Old Trafford following Martial’s move to Sevilla, including Lukaku

PLAYING for Manchester United can be a heavy burden for some players, even the very best. And many find their way again after moving away from Old Trafford to the frustration of supporters.
These former Man Utd stars flourished away from Old Trafford
Anthony Martial, a £56million signing from Monaco, failed to hit the heights expected of him and will be hoping a move to Sevilla reignites his career.
He will be be buoyed by these seven who did especially well after leaving the Premier League giants behind.
From a Uruguayan legend to a Dutch star who later earned a transfer to Barcelona, here are the flops for whom life got much better after leaving Old Trafford.
    ROMELU LUKAKU
The Belgium centre forward is definitely the one that got away.
Often, Lukaku was deemed not good enough by supporters who felt he was overweight and cumbersome.
After cutting a more shredded figure at Inter Milan, where a new diet and fitness regime saw the striker lose 16lbs and get into the best shape of his career, he helped the Serie A club land the title.
That prompted Chelsea to splash £97.5m on Lukaku, although he’s yet to live up to that price tag at the Bridge.

    MEMPHIS DEPAY
In 2015, United shelled out £25m on the Dutch star on the insistence of Louis van Gaal.
But Depay looked lost at sea on our shores, playing 53 times and managing just seven goals.
Two seasons later he was sold to Lyon for £20m, where he rediscovered his form.
In 2021, after scoring 76 goals in 178 games, he joined Barcelona on a free transfer.

After moving to Lyon, Depay has re-emerged for club and country – signing for Barcelona
    ANGEL DI MARIA
It’s not uncommon for Argentinian stars to lose their way at Old Trafford – with Juan Sebastian Veron also struggling in Manchester.
Di Maria was a marquee signing in 2014 for a then-British transfer record fee of £59.7m.
In his only season, he managed just four goals in 32 games and soon fell out of favour with boss van Gaal.
A year later he was sold to PSG for £40m, where he has scored double figures in goals in five of his six seasons, as well as been integral in four Ligue 1-winning campaigns.

    WILFRIED ZAHA
In 2013, United moved to sign Zaha from Crystal Palace for £15m – Sir Alex Ferguson’s final acquisition for the club.
A year later he found himself out of favour under new boss David Moyes and was loaned out to Cardiff City.
Zaha would later say he never felt he was given a fair chance at Old Trafford.
He was loaned to the Eagles, who eventually bought him back for £10m – and he’s gone on to become one of the Premier League’s biggest danger men.

    DALEY BLIND
A lot of Blind’s problems at Old Trafford stemmed from where managers thought he should play.
Was he a left-back? Should he play in a midfield holding role? Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho just couldn’t work him out.
In 2018, the Dutch international returned to Ajax, where he has won two league titles and contributed to the club’s brilliant Champions League run in 2019… playing at centre-back.
And at the Euros he starred for Holland.

    DIEGO FORLAN
Forlan was a costly (at the time) £7m buy for United in 2002.
However, in his first 13 Premier League games and five Champions League matches he was ridiculed for failing to hit the back of the net.
United sold him to LaLiga’s Villarreal, where he was an instant hit scoring 25 league goals and winning the Spanish Golden Boot and the European Golden Shoe in his first season.
He repeated that trick in 2009 at Atletico Madrid – scoring a sensational 32 goals in 33 games.

    RADAMEL FALCAO
The Colombian striker, now 35, is plying his trade at Rayo Vallecano where he has five goals in 13 games.
Before that, he was scoring goals at Galatasaray – 20 in 43 games.

But at Old Trafford, on loan from Monaco, he really struggled with just four goals in 29 games, although a serious knee injury and a struggle to initially return to fitness hindered him.
After his Manchester United nightmare, a poor spell at Chelsea followed.
But a return to Monaco helped Falcao find his Midas touch again. He scored 70 goals in his last three seasons with the French giants before continuing his rejuvenation in his twilight years in Turkey.

Man Utd will be better suited to 4-3-3 formation than Rangnick’s experimental 4-2-2-2 until they improve squad

AS we arrive at a two-week winter break in the Premier League, Manchester United have entered in the top four for the first time under Ralf Rangnick. It is also the first time since November 2021 they have been in the mix as they slowly start to show the signs that they can turn this season around.
Ralf Rangnick cannot rely on his favoured 4-2-2-2 as the players are not good enough
Since the managerial change, United have picked up 17 out of 24 points available in the league.
There have been important victories over the likes of West Ham, Brentford and Burnley.
However, the Red Devils have not shown the signs of a high pressing team or a side dominating the midfield battle, some things that majority of supporters were instantly expecting under Rangnick.
Nevertheless, the former Schalke 04 and RB Leipzig manager has recently moved to a 4-3-3 setup.
The team are now looking more balanced and in control in the middle of the park.
We investigate why the 4-3-3 formation is working and why the 4-2-2-2 did not…

4-3-3 formation, control the midfield and attack through the wingers
United were utilising a double pivot midfield of Fred and Scott McTominay.
Neither the 4-2-3-1 setup or 4-2-2-2 system allows the side to gain control of the game or assist in the build-up play.
Fred and McTominay do not have the intelligence or qualities that are required for the holding midfield role.
This is especially as both midfielders are seen as hard-working, box-to-box players.
With a three-man midfield, the roles are equally shared out and each individual plays to their strengths.
Ralf Rangnick may look to go with this when he has everybody fit
The central midfielder sits deep and dictates play, one of the side midfielders works to help out both full-backs as much as possible and the final midfielder helps the team to create chances in the final third.
Looking in the midfield department, the ideal trio for Rangnick’s starting line-up would be Nemanja Matic, Fred and Paul Pogba.
Rangnick utilised the 4-3-3 formation at Aston Villa, where the side’s first-half performance was considered as one of the best 45 minutes they had so far this season.
Although the side drew the game after a poor defensive showing in the second half, the Red Devils kept to the same setup against Brentford.
This led to the first Premier League win of 2022 as they continue to aim to return back into the top four positions.
And in the recent fixture against West Ham the side showed they have the ability to work as a unit as they prevented David Moyes’ side from creating a single big chance and limited the opposition to just one shot on target.
Despite lacking creativity of their own in the final third, partly due to the likes of Jadon Sancho and Pogba not being available, United bagged the winner late in stoppage time through Marcus Rashford.
Ronaldo and Cavani will have to adapt their game if Rangnick is to trust playing them both
Lack of intelligence and technical quality to fit into the 4-2-2-2 setup
In this formation, each individual plays an important role and especially the two strikers up front.
They are expected to press high up the pitch and ensure they drop deep from time to time, allowing one of the wide attacking midfielders to overlap and take advantage of the space ahead.
As Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani have been starting regularly, two veterans who do not have the legs to play in this intense style, the team have found it difficult to link up play from midfield to attack.
They have also struggled to create chances from the wide areas where the full-backs and the two No10s should be playing off one another.
This is one potential option if Rangnick wants to revert back to 4-2-2-2
How the 4-3-3 formation is slowly working for Rangnick
The Red Devils do not have the technical quality in the midfield area with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, McTominay and Rashford not wanting to hold on to the ball for long.
They prefer to play in quick bursts rather than dictating the tempo of the game, understanding when to slow down and when to raise it.
A good example would be from the 1-1 draw against Newcastle United at the end of last year.
United had a 26 per cent success rate in crosses and a 45 per cent success rate in long balls – showing they did not have the composure or knowledge of how to overcome a deep block.
They then panicked a bit and went direct in the last 20 minutes.
But with Ronaldo on his own in the box against a very deep Newcastle side, the tactics made no sense.
Bruno Fernandes has been asked to modify his role under Rangnick
In the same game against the Magpies, playmaker Fernandes lost the ball on 26 occasions, completing four out of 15 attempted long balls.
Rashford lost the ball on 19 occasions and did not pose a threat in the final third.
If the two No10s within this setup are not technically complete and do not have patience with the ball, then the 4-2-2-2 system is ineffective.
On the other hand, this does not come up as a huge surprise, as the side have been used to an open style under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over the last three years.
United have thrived in transition and the 48-year-old Norwegian did not want to complicate things with specific tactics and systems.

Man Utd to make sock colour switch for FA Cup clash with Middlesbrough to help colour-blind fans with kit clashes

MANCHESTER UNITED will wear white socks and not their usual black ones for their FA Cup tie at home to Middlesbrough. The club have decided on the change ‘to avoid potential issues for colour-blind fans and viewers’.

According to MailOnline, United have decided on the colour change to ‘help increase the visual contrast’.
Middlesbrough only have two options for their socks – red or green, so United believe wearing white will clash more.
But changing their socks or not, United could have a tough time of it on Friday night, according to former Boro boss Neil Warnock.
Warnock left Boro in November after being replaced by Chris Wilder in the Riverside dug-out.
But he believes the Championship side have a good chance of producing an upset against the 12-time FA Cup winners at Old Trafford as his old club have better defenders.
Warnock told talkSPORT Breakfast: “They’ve got great individuals but not a team and I don’t see that coming.

“They’ve got my old team Middlesbrough in the next round of the FA Cup and I wouldn’t swap any of their defenders for the back three at Middlesbrough – Dael Fry, Anfernee Dijksteele and Paddy McNair.
“I think they’re better than Man United‘s defence.”
United will be without Donny van de Beek for the FA Cup clash – the Dutch midfielder completed a loan deal to Everton for the rest of the season.
But Jesse Lingard could be in line for a rare start after the club BLOCKED him joining West Ham in some last-minute deadline-day drama.
