Arsenal idol Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher tear into Man Utd’s ‘unmanageable’ superstars amid record trophy drought

THIERRY HENRY and Jamie Carragher have torn into Manchester United’s ‘unmanageable’ stars. The Red Devils are set to equal their longest trophy drought since they were last relegated… 48 YEARS ago.

United are out of the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, and while Anthony Elanga came off the bench to secure a draw in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie at Atletico Madrid last night, not many fancy Ralf Rangnick’s side to go all the way.
Now Arsenal legend Henry and Liverpool great Carragher have ripped into the Red Devils flops and believe that some of them are actually ‘unmanageable’ after years of failure.
Henry told CBS Sport: “The way they play is not United. It’s not the United I know – I don’t know what it is.
Carragher jumped in and asked: “Do you think the Manchester United we’ve seen over the last four or five years are actually unmanageable?
“We are talking about the structure of a football club, the players they have. They have had five or six managers – some of them have won Champions Leagues.
“You talked about Ajax being your favourite Champions League team – Louis van Gaal was the coach. He’s managed Manchester United.

“Jose Mourinho, he’s been in there, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a legendary figure. Ralf Rangnick now, the top of gegenpressing, the way that teams play now.
“I look at that, and there’s different football clubs at different levels and no matter who goes in they can’t seem to get it right.
“Now is it at that stage where the structure from top to bottom, the Glazers and the players they have, recruitment…”
Henry jumped in and responded: “I don’t like usually to have a go at players but like you said, you had a teacher like Louis van Gaal who is successful, then they called Mourinho a ‘dictator’ because he was too much into this and that and too direct with the players.
“Suddenly you have a friend and they liked Solskjaer because he was more of a dad and nice guy. But when is it going to be about the players?
“They have to deliver. I repeat – it’s Manchester United and when you play for Man United you have got to deliver.
“Regardless of who the coach is, it cannot always be the coach. “I’m sorry but those guys need to perform and start to understand where they are.”

Ralf Rangnick reveals he had to talk Man Utd hero Anthony Elanga into staying after wonderkid demanded January transfer

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Ralf Rangnick has revealed he persuaded Anthony Elanga to stay at the club after he demanded a loan move. The 19-year-old has been one of United’s best players recently, and scored just five minutes after coming on in the Champions League draw with Atletico Madrid.

But Elanga found chances in the first XI hard to come by under previous gaffer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, which prompted him to push for a loan move – with the Championship believed to be the chosen destination.
But Rangnick, 63, blocked his exit after being impressed with what he saw of the teenager in training.
Speaking after the Atletico game, the 63-year-old said: “Apart from his name, of course, I had heard about his name before but not as a player because he didn’t play for Manchester United.
“The first training session the night before the Crystal Palace game, he was the player with the best training performance.
“I asked my staff members about him and found out he had almost already decided to leave the club on loan.
“So a week after the Palace game I said, listen, I want you stay and see how you are doing in the training games until the end of the closure of the transfer window.

“I think right now he has just shown what is possible in football with the right mentality, the right approach, this is exactly what he did and what he always does in every training session.”
Elanga was named on the bench for the game in Spain, which might have surprised many United fans following his recent performances.
He scored in the 4-2 win against Leeds in the Premier League at the weekend and helped turn the game back in United’s favour.
Rangnick continued: “In all the games he has played so far, he just shows that he’s playing with all the passion and all the fun, he’s just enjoying himself on the pitch.
“He’s fully aware of his strengths, of his assets and his weapons. He is always trying to play and show those weapons. This is what he did today.

“Apart from the goal he scored, he had two or three great runs and whenever he did that you could all of a sudden see Atletico had problems with this kind of approach.
“But we have to show this with other positions as well, not only Anthony Elanga.
“We have to play like this in every single position and if we want to proceed in the qualifiers in the next few weeks at Old Trafford we have to play exactly like that.”

Man Utd ‘remain confident of landing top transfer targets like Rice this summer’ even without Champions League

MANCHESTER UNITED ‘remain confident they can attract their top targets’ – even if they fail to qualify for the Champions League. The Red Devils have a four-point advantage ahead of West Ham in fifth after victories over Brighton and Leeds.
Man Utd are confident they can attract targets like Declan Rice even if they don’t qualify for the Champions LeagueCredit: Rex
However, Arsenal, Wolves and Tottenham all have games in hand and can overtake Ralf Rangnick’s side if they can put a run together.
The German coach is only in charge on an interim basis as the club continue their search for a new permanent boss, with Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag the frontrunners for the job.
Funds have been promised to whoever takes over with West Ham midfielder Declan Rice believed to be one of their top targets.
That is despite the England midfielder now being valued at £120million.
Now ESPN claims that United are confident they can secure the players they want even if they are only playing in the Europa League next season.
The report states that Old Trafford sources pointed out that they made Paul Pogba their club-record signing for £89m back in 2016 despite them not being in the Champions League.

Man Utd verdict: Rangnick got tactics wrong but came up trumps with his subs as Elanga saves boss vs Atletico Madrid

RALF RANGNICK cannot keep relying on his Swedish teenage star to make an El of an impact off the bench. But at least the Manchester United boss was brave enough to fix his tactical mistakes to help his team get a result.

But his decision to start Victor Lindelof was the wrong oneCredit: AFP
The Red Devils were pegged back for nearly all of the first half by Atletico Madrid but escaped from the Spanish capital with a vital draw thanks to Anthony Elanga.
The 19-year-old came off the bench for the second-straight game to score and earn a vital Champions League last-16 first leg draw.
But despite battling back from Joao Felix’s early header, there are still plenty of questions for Rangnick.
The surprise choice of Victor Lindelof at right-back in place of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot raised a few eyebrows but it failed to provide a spark that Ralf Rangnick was looking for.
His two defensive rivals offer far more going forward and are a lot more comfortable on the ball, which resulted in United having no outlet on the right.
He made a great sliding challenge to deny Jose Luis Gimenez early on and got a couple of clearances in, but in truth the Swede was given the runaround all night by Renan Lodi and Joao Felix.

With half an hour on the clock, Lindelof to Raphael Varane was the highest pass combination in the match – and that told you everything you needed to know about they starved Marcus Rashford.
Alongside him it was Raphael Varane, who is still failing to show the composure he showed at Real Madrid, and Harry Maguire, whose slow reaction allowed Felix’s header to open the scoring, and Luke Shaw down the left.
And the four of them had plenty of work to do throughout the opening period as Atletico’s press had United on the ropes.
Not that the Red Devils made it hard for the LaLiga champions as everyone came short instead of running behind, a piece of cake for Diego Simeone’s men.
Up top the frustrated Cristiano Ronaldo hardly got a kick and had to wait until the 36th minute for his first opportunity against his old city rivals.
Rashford wasted one chance to tee-him up while Jadon Sancho also struggled to make an impact on his limited service.
And the stat that summed it all up was that United failed to have a single touch in the opposition box in the first half of a Champions League game for the first time since the 2005/06 season.
United legend Paul Scholes hit the nail on the head at half time when he told BT Sport that his old team had been ‘bullied’ and ‘that all the problems have come down the right side’ where Lindelof was.
    CH-CH-CHANGES
But fair play to Rangnick, shortly after the restart he quickly made amends with a triple sub.
The awful Paul Pogba was hooked for the second straight game and replaced with Nemanja Matic to add more steel in the midfield and stop the Atletico press.
Lindelof’s misery was over as Aaron Wan-Bissaka took over at full-back and Alex Telles was deployed at the back on the other flank.
Instantly United looked stronger and began to press – but still talisman Ronaldo could not get involved.
The Red Devils were enjoying most of the possession but were lacking bite with the Portuguese legend, Jadon Sancho and Rashford all ineffective.
But when you have an ace up your sleeve like the talented teen Elanga then you always have a chance.
Bruno Fernandes was one of the worst performers on the pitch, but he showed a glimpse of his magic with the perfectly-weighted pass for the sub to latch on to a finish – albeit not as sweetly as he would have liked.
It’s plain to see that there is still plenty of work for United to do – as you can see from our player ratings – but the boss holding up his hands when he has got it wrong is always a good start to making things better.

Man Utd star Cristiano Ronaldo fuming with referee over his treatment by Atletico Madrid as he’s given brutal reception

However, Ronaldo is sure to wake up with a few bruises tomorrow after some rough treatment on the field.
That’s because he was on the receiving end of some meaty challenges at the Wanda Metropolitano.
The tone was set before kick-off when the ex-Real Madrid star received raucous boos from the Atletico crowd when his name was shown on the big screen.
Ronaldo was continually jeered throughout the heated clash, which saw NINE players booked.
However, the first half saw ref Ovidiu Hategan dish out just one booking to Marcos Llorente for a foul on Harry Maguire.
And as the whistle blew for the break, Ronaldo confronted the official to vent his anger at the other challenges which went unpunished.

In the end, a further three Atletico players ended up receiving yellows, with five United aces also booked.
But it will be the Red Devils feeling the happier of the two after fighting back for a draw.
That’s because Atleti dominated proceedings from the off.
And they made a flying start when Joao Felix headed home with just eight minutes on the clock.
However, a tactical masterstroke from United paid off when sub Anthony Elanga netted an 80th minute equaliser to save some face.

Man Utd player ratings: Lindelof was given the runaround by Atletico as poor Pogba is hooked for the second game running

MANCHESTER UNITED escaped with a draw at Atletico Madrid thanks to Anthony Elanga.Joao Felix put the Spaniards ahead early on with a header in the first-leg of the Champions League last-16 tie.

But after being given the runaround in the first half, United battled back in the second and managed to level it with ten minutes to go thanks to the 19-year-old substitute.
Here’s how Gary Stonehouse rated each of the United men on display in the Spanish capital:
    DAVID DE GEA – 6/10
Could have had Dean Henderson in goal with him and the pair still wouldn’t have stopped Joao Felix’s header.
Did not have much else to do despite Atletico’s dominance.
    VICTOR LINDELOF – 4
Was the surprise choice at right-back in place of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot and made a great sliding challenge to deny Jose Luis Gimenez early on.
After a bright start, he then began to struggle to stop impressive wing-back Renan Lodi and would have been thankful to hear the half time whistle.
Booked on the hour mark for a foul on Felix.

    RAPHAEL VARANE – 5
Just doesn’t look to be the same composed presence at the back as he is for France or during his time across the city at Real Madrid.
    HARRY MAGUIRE – 5
Reacted slowly and allowed Joao Felix to get across him for the opening goal.
Still question marks over him at the top level.
    LUKE SHAW – 6
Restricted to defensive duties as his side failed to get on the front foot and found his way into the referee’s book moments after the restart.
Was unfortunate to be subbed off but the tactical changes paid off.
    FRED – 5
Was beaten too easily by Renan Lodi as the Atletico man whipped in the cross for the first goal.
Was constantly bypassed by the Atletico midfield and struggled massively against their press.
Booked in the second half for a clumsy challenge but at least he was constantly working – which is the minimum requirement.
    PAUL POGBA – 5
Was caught in possession several times throughout the opening period and struggled in the midfield battle with Geoffrey Kondogbia, with his frustration boiling over when fouling his rival just before the break.
Withdrawn before the 70-minute mark for he second-successive game after another poor night.
    MARCUS RASHFORD – 5
His pace was one of United’s only outlets but struggled to create much and left Cristiano Ronaldo fuming in the first period after failing to find him on a rare attack.
Tracked back well – although that’s not what he’s in the team for – and his frustration was on display for everyone when he blazed miles over from about 40 yards out.
Replaced late on after another night to forget.
    BRUNO FERNANDES – 5
Wasteful in the first half with his corners and then smashed a free-kick straight up field to Jan Oblak.
That continued in the second half and his display was typified when he smashed the ball straight out for a goal kick with what was neither a cross or a shot shortly after the restart.
But it’s games like this when United need him most, and despite a forgettable evening, he showed great patience to brilliantly slide in Anthony Elanga for the equaliser.
    JADON SANCHO – 5
Limited service all night but did plenty of running off the ball.
Starved throughout the contest before Jesse Lingard replaced him.
    CRISTIANO RONALDO – 5
Barely touched the ball before dragging his first effort wide from distance on 36 minutes.
Got no service and no change out of the Atletico defence all night – much to the delight of the home supporters.
Blazed a free-kick over with ten to go.
    SUBSTITUTES
    ALEX TELLES (On 66 minutes) – 6
Slotted in well in place of Shaw. Booked for a foul on Marcos Llorente.
    AARON WAN-BISSAKA (On 66 minutes) – 6
Did well when he came on to stop Atletico’s supply line down that side.
    NEMANJA MATIC (On 66 minutes) – 6
Replaced Pogba to try and stop the Atletico midfield dominance and battled well.
    ANTHONY ELANGA (On 75 minutes) – 8
The hero came off the bench to score for the second-straight game with his side’s first shot on target.
The Swedish forward kept his cool after being slid in by Fernandes to grab a vital away goal despite not hitting in cleanly. Top marks for the teen.
    JESSE LINGARD (On 82 minutes) – 4
Replaced Sancho late on but had no chance to make an impact.

‘Send him back to Hull’ – Man Utd fans slam Harry Maguire over shocking defending for Felix’s opener for Atletico Madrid

MANCHESTER UNITED fans ordered Ralf Rangnick to send Harry Maguire ‘back to Hull’ after his shocking defending saw Atletico Madrid score just EIGHT minutes into their 1-1 Champions League draw.Joao Felix fired the hosts ahead early on in the Champions League last 16, first leg tie at the Wanda Metropolitano, before super-sub Anthony Elaga rescued a draw for the visitors.

Renan Lodi picked up the ball on the left wing before swinging a sublime cross into United’s box.
Felix then darted off Raphael Varane before leaping above Maguire to head the ball past David De Gea.
It was a brilliant goal from the £113million Portugal star, especially considering he is just 5ft9in while Maguire stands at over 6f3in.
And Red Devils fans were far from happy as they delivered a scathing assessment on their captain’s efforts.
One demanded: “Please send Harry Maguire back to Hull City.”
Another said: “Maguire made little Joao Felix look like prime Peter Crouch.”

Watch Cristiano Ronaldo creep up on unwitting MUTV reporter as Man Utd squad head to Madrid for Atletico clash

CRISTIANO RONALDO looked to be in great spirits as he headed back to Madrid with Manchester United. The Portuguese superstar spent nine incredible years in the Spanish capital between 2009 and 2018 playing for Real Madrid.

The legend snuck up behind him as United headed to the Spanish capitalCredit: Instagram / @manchesterunited
He won the Champions League a mega four times during that period as well as two LaLiga titles and became the club’s all-time top goalscorer.
Now he has returned to the city with United for tonight’s Champions League last-16 first leg clash with Real’s neighbours and bitter rivals Atletico Madrid.
And the 37-year-old seemed to be excited upon depature as the Red Devils shared a hilarious clip from the tarmac.
A reporter from the club’s MUTV channel was talking into a microphone as Ralf Rangnick’s squad made their way onto the plane.

Ronaldo has played more games and won more matches against Atletico than any other club on the planet during his amazing career.
He has faced them 35 times previously and tasted victory 17 times – including two Champions League finals.
The icon has also scored a hat-trick of trebles against them.
Therefore it will be no surprise to him that a hugely hostile reception will be in store from the home supporters this evening for him as he looks to extend his stunning record versus Atletico.
