They failed to build on being the better side in a nervous start to the game and failed to create a clear-cut chance in the second half.
That said, Jordan Pickford twice prevented Everton from going behind before David De Gea was unlucky to be beaten by the hosts’ first effort on goal.
Pickford’s first save from a Rashford shot after his defence failed to clear a free kick was impressive. His second, from a header by the same player, was superb.
Everton were competing well enough but enjoying next to no meaningful possession in the United half.

Then came the bit of good fortune they needed. Alex Iwobi helped the ball into the path of Gordon and although his shot was on target, without the big deflection off Maguire it would surely not have beaten De Gea.
It would have been 2-0 if De Gea had not dealt brilliantly with a Richarlison effort that took a touch off Victor Lindelof.
United were struggling to create chances at the other end. Pickford did enough to put Nemanja Matic off his header and Vitaliy Mykolenko nodded away a dangerous cross, and that was it.
Rashford had the chance to make it third time lucky early in the second half, but failed to connect after running on to Fernandes’ fine long ball.

Rangnick’s attempt to do the same was a double change just after the hour, bringing on Anthony Elanga for Rashford and replacing Nemanja Matic with Juan Mata, who was making his first Premier League appearance of the season.

Pickford held a long-range effort from Paul Pogba with 10 minutes left and his boys in blue put their bodies on the line to prevent him from having to deal with any other efforts until stoppage-time.

United are reportedly considering a swoop for Rene Meulensteen to assist Erik ten Hag.
The Dutchman served as Sir Alex Ferguson’s No2 at Old Trafford between 2007 and 2013.

According to ESPN, Meulensteen, 58, is under consideration to be appointed Ten Hag’s assistant.

Speaking about giving youngsters a chance to shine, he said in 2019: “I do agree that youngsters need to get a chance in the first team but they have to deserve that chance themselves.
“They have to prove that they are better than the current players or at least have to potential to be better.”
United fans are excited about the raft of talent in their youth set-up – the likes of Hannibal Mejbri, Alvaro Fernandez, Alejandro Garnacho and Bjorn Hardley should be excited about their futures and won’t have to wait long to get their chance.
In addition, current graduates like Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay could see their careers put back on track.

Some have questioned whether Ten Hag realises the size of the job at hand managing a club in desperate need of a boost.

Ronald De Boer played alongside Ten Hag for Twente, and feels the tactician will be able to handle the pressure.
He told talkSPORT: “He’s focused in what he wants and everybody has to follow that path.
“At Ajax we also have stars, not to the magnitude you have there, but also big stars.
“He can also put them on the bench and I don’t think he’s afraid.”
