Chris Smalling nears £18m Roma transfer after missing Man Utd pre-season to finalise deal following stunning loan spell

ROMA are reportedly on the verge of signing Manchester United defender Chris Smalling on a permanent basis.
The centre-back, 30, has been absent from the Red Devils’ pre-season training this week while he finalises the move.

Chris Smalling, seen here with fellow former Red Romelu Lukaku, has been a star in Serie ACredit: Reuters
According to the Telegraph, a deal is now close and expected to be worth in the region of £18million.
Smalling has appeared at Carrington this month but is said to have not taken part in first-team sessions.
Speculation over his future has persisted all summer, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer talking up the player’s “value” to United.
Despite over 300 games for United and a tally of 31 caps for England, he was largely considered a spent force at the top-level when sent on loan to Roma a year ago.

In 37 appearances for the Serie A side, Smalling showed he still has plenty left in the tank and became affectionately known as ‘Smaldini’ in Italy.
A permanent stay in Rome has long been described as his preferred option.
However, the Giallorossi are hardly flushed with cash and have been hard at work negotiating down United’s valuation.
Aleksandar Kolarov was allowed to leave for Inter Milan this week and Alessandro Florenzi is nearing a loan-to-buy move to Paris-Saint Germain.

It had appeared that Smalling had a future in Manchester after Solskjaer spoke of his encouragement at the defender’s loan spell.
The manager stated: “I think Chris has shown over his Manchester United career how valuable he is at Manchester United.
“This season was about him being a regular and going to Roma and showing how good a centre-back he is, I wanted to give Harry [Maguire], Victor [Lindelof] and maybe Axel [Tuanzebe] a chance.
“It was best for him to go and play for a year in Roma and he has shown he will be valuable, I’ve been speaking to Chris throughout. I’ve been delighted with his season.”

Man Utd fans go wild as teen star Hannibal Mejbri scores and makes incredible assists in 6-0 drubbing of Salford

MANCHESTER UNITED’S kids put League Two Salford to the sword thanks to a star performance from Hannibal Mejbri.
The frizzy-haired Frenchman opened the scoring with a fine strike before setting up two more in the 6-0 rout.

The Red Devils snapped up Mejbri, 17, from Monaco last year in a deal reportedly worth around £9million.
Such a fee raised expectations of the midfielder and fans were again hyped about the prospect after this showing on Wednesday night.
Mejbri took control of an eighth-minute goal scramble to curl a stunning effort into the top-corner at Moor Lane.
A whipped free-kick from the teenager was then turned home by Mark Helm for 3-0, before Mejbri helped wrap up the scoring.

Arguably the pass of the night came from the Parisian, who slotted the ball through the defence for Anthony Elanga to run on and score.
The display left United fans dreaming of the prospect following in Mason Greenwood’s shoes and making a first-team impact in the coming campaign.
One supporter’s Twitter account stated: “This is why they let Gomes go. Mejbri will be incredible player for Utd and Ole perfect manager to bring him through. Expect him to get minutes in League Cup this season.”
Robbo tweeted: “1 goal & 2 assists vs. Salford at 17 years old. Hannibal Mejbri is a magician.”

Saeed added: “People only hearing about Hannibal Mejbri. He’s been doing it! Future star.”
Another fan wrote: “You get the feeling that Hannibal Mejbri will be the next big breakthrough from the United academy. He was absolutely sensational against Salford City last night. Unreal talent.”
And one Red Devil posted: “Imagine if Mengi and Mejbri have a Mason Greenwood ‘breakthrough’ season.”
Mejbri is set for a season with United’s Under-23s having stuck with the Under-18s squad in 2019/20.
U23s coach Neil Wood has attempted to take the spotlight off the French starlet, although performances like this will make that a tough job.
Wood stated last month: “I think what you need to remember is Hannibal is still a young lad, he is only 17.

“He’s not long been here really, he is probably coming up to almost a first completed season if that.
“I think people get sucked into the price tag, and again that is not Hannibal’s fault.
“So I think he is a young player with potential, he is one of the young players we have got with potential, but there is still a lot of development and learning which needs to be put into him.”

Solskjaer reveals he had been tracking Man Utd new boy Van de Beek for 5 years after impressive first training session

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER has revealed his five-year long admiration for Donny van de Beek before the Dutch star joined Manchester United.
The midfielder cost £39million from Ajax and underwent his first training session at Carrington on Wednesday.

For Solskjaer, van de Beek has been one to watch for a number of years having bagged his first Ajax goal against the Norwegian.
A forthright header past Molde in December 2015 was not one the United boss forgot quickly, particularly as it bruised his defender.
Solskjaer told Football Daily Podcast: “I have actually followed Donny, his first goal he scored was against me, my team Molde, in the Europa League in 2015.
“We drew 1-1 at the Amsterdam Arena and he scored a fantastic header.

“He actually headbutted my centre-back at the time as well, so he was brave! Very brave!
“I’ve liked his infectious attitude, when you have a smile on your face. When you see players with that drive and desire.
“I’ve spoken to Edwin van der Sar, other players that know him, you just use the people you know and trust to scout that character.
“When someone scores against you, you’ll always remember it… You remember the goals you concede more than the ones you score, as a coach.

“I just remember a cross and he beats my centre-back and it loops over our keeper at the beginning of the game.”
Solskjaer and club captain Harry Maguire posed for pictures with the 23-year-old as he pulled on the club training kit for the first time.
Fans have speculated where the manager will fit van de Beek into his system with Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba starring at the end of last season.
But Solskjaer, 47, is confident in his new signing’s character and his ability to hit the back of the net.
He noted: “We’ve signed Donny and he’s a type of player I felt we needed in the squad.
“He’s the type of person that will fit the culture, fit the team and improve us next season and for years to come.

He added: “He’s a versatile player, a very intelligent, clever player. He’s got loads of energy, enthusiasm, developing all the time.
“He scores goals – we need to add goals from midfield. Our forwards scored quite a few goals last season, Bruno came in and scored goals but we need goals throughout the squad because we didn’t score enough to be challenging at the top.
“He will add his creativity, his reading of the game, his understanding of the game because he can see space and arrive at the right time, the timing of his movement is fantastic.”

Donny van de Beek arrives for Man Utd training for first time as Solskjaer uses extra week to work on tactics

DONNY VAN DE BEEK touched down at Carrington for his first Manchester United training session on Wednesday.
The Dutchman was driven into the club’s base for a workout under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after his £39million move from Ajax last week.

Fresh from his hero’s send-off by the Amsterdam club’s fans, van de Beek can look forward to an extended period of training before United’s season begins.
With the Red Devils’ Premier League opener against Burnley postponed, the squad can utilise the extra week’s preparation before hosting Crystal Palace on September 19.
United fans are keenly watching Solskjaer for indications on how he will fit van de Beek into his system.
The 23-year-old generally played in a central attacking midfield role for Ajax, where Bruno Fernandes is the star at Old Trafford.

Moving the new arrival deeper would mean threatening Paul Pogba’s place in the team, potentially leaving van de Beek on the bench in ten days’ time.
However, fans and pundits alike are excited to see what the midfielder can do in the Premier League.
Former Netherlands star Wesley Sneijder believes United will work out better than the move to Real Madrid he was also touted for.
Sneijder said: “English football suits him better than Spanish football. He is a complete player. I really like his running actions.

“He is someone who makes space, has a lot of depth and always looks for the right moments to go deep. He is always in the right place and always keeps playing football.”

Meanwhile, ex-United striker Dimitar Berbatov reckons van de Beek’s arrival leaves Solskjaer’s midfield “crowded”.
But the Bulgarian believes that will help propel the Red Devils up the table as they fight on multiple fronts in 2020-21.
He stated: “It’s getting crowded in the midfield department but that’s a good thing because competition is always healthy.
“They will get the best out of each other.”

Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood ‘tried to sneak FOUR girls into England hotel’ in Covid-19 breach shame

PHIL FODEN and Mason Greenwood tried to sneak FOUR girls back to England’s hotel, according to the latest reports on the pair’s Covid-19 breach shame.
England boss Gareth Southgate chucked the youngsters out of the national team camp after they celebrated their Three Lions debuts by breaking strict coronavirus guidelines.

Lara Clausen joined her cousin in sneaking into the hotel – but at least four girls are said to have been asked
Icelandic beauties Nadia Sif Lindal Gunnarsdottir, 20, and Lara Clausen, 19, hung out with the footballers after being invited into the England hotel.
But MailOnline claim that Foden, 20, and Greenwood, 18, had been chatting up at least four local ladies ahead of landing in Reykjavik.
Anita Gunnarsdottir was filmed chatting to the players with a friend but insists she did not venture to the hotel.
    WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR

She is quoted as saying: “I didn’t meet them. I’m not one of the girls who went to the hotel.”
Leaked Snapchat clips showed the stars, who ply their club trade with Manchester City and Manchester United, hosting Nadia and Lara after England’s 1-0 win over Iceland.
At one point, City playmaker Foden flashed his bum at the girls, who did not enter the national team’s secure Covid-19 bubble.
The rule breach earned both players a £1,360 fine from local police, with further punishment expected from club and country.

Southgate dismissed the pair on Monday morning, barring them from breakfast and training with the squad before they boarded a flight home.

Foden and Greenwood are expected to become Three Lions mainstays for years to come after their first outing in the Nations League, yet could be banned for the next FOUR internationals.
Sent home on a private jet last night, the apologetic stars were subject to scathing statements from both City and United, as well as England.
The FA condemned their “unacceptable breach of our protocol” and “serious lack of judgement” ahead of a full investigation.
Meanwhile, Manchester City described Foden’s action as “totally inappropriate” with United “disappointed” in striker Greenwood.
Foden vowed to learn from the “valuable lesson” of his “poor behaviour”.
After deleting his Twitter account, Greenwood apologised on Tuesday for his “irresponsible” actions.

TELEPHONE CONVERSATION BETWEEN STARS AND BABES

Foden: ‘Say that again, what was you saying?’
    Girl: ‘What’s the plan?’
    Foden: ‘What’s the plan?’
    Girl: ‘Mhmm’
    Foden: ‘Mason what’s the plan?’
    Greenwood: ‘Depends what you want’
Foden: ‘He says depends what do you want?’
Girl: ‘We can come to the hotel but I don’t know how you’re going to sneak us in’
Foden: ‘What you coming to the hotel for?’
    Greenwood: ‘What do you think?’
    Foden: ‘What does she want?’
Girl: ‘Yeah, what do you think bro?’
Girl: [Speaks In Icelandic to her friend]
Greenwood and Foden: ‘Discussing. Hard to tell what they are saying.’
Foden: ‘Have you got a mate?’
    Girl: What?
    Foden: ‘Your friend?’
    Girl: ‘Yeah’

In a statement released via United’s website, he wrote: “It was irresponsible of me to break the COVID-19 protocols which are in place to protect players, staff and the public.
“In particular, I want to apologise to Gareth Southgate, for letting him down, when he had shown great trust in me.
“Playing for England was one of the proudest moments in my life and I only have myself to blame for this huge mistake.

Nadia admitted to the “mess” that the quartet have found themselves in

“I promise my family, the fans, Manchester United and England that this is a lesson I will learn from.”
Beauty queen Gunnarsdottir has confirmed that she had been texting the United ace for a couple of days before his arrival in Iceland.
She admitted to having “messed up” but defended the players, along with Clausen, her cousin, who described them as “such gentlemen”.

Man Utd hero Berbatov warns club that van de Beek transfer makes midfield ‘crowded’ and urges them to sign defender

DIMITAR BERBATOV hopes Manchester United can benefit from having a “crowded” midfield after Donny van de Beek’s arrival.
The Red Devils paid £39million to bring the Dutchman in from Ajax last week.

    2

    2

Donny van de Beek’s arrival excites the Bulgarian – pushing a sense of “healthy” competition
And with talks to sign winger Jadon Sancho at deadlock, Berbatov wants to see United look elsewhere for their next signing.
The former striker, 39, told Stadium Astro, via MEN: “It’s getting crowded in the midfield department but that’s a good thing because competition is always healthy.
“They will get the best out of each other.
“There is going to be [Paul] Pogba, him and Bruno Fernandes – that is exciting.

“The team is getting compact in a really nice way. Maybe they will surprise us with one or two more signings.’”
Along with Pogba, Fernandes and van de Beek, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have Juan Mata, Scott McTominay, Fred, Nemanja Matic, Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard to select from for his midfield next season.
However, United’s return to the Champions League will likely demand squad rotation in a congested calendar.
And Berbatov reckons one more signing is required to cement their challenge for silverware.

Harking back to the days of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic’s star partnership while he was at the club, the former red would like to see a new centre-back arrive.
He continued: “I think in defence, a centre-back is something that they need to look for.
“If they are going to buy someone or not we are going to see, but I think that is where they need to strengthen.

“Everything else at the moment looks balanced. For me they need someone who can accommodate Harry Maguire.
“Harry is more of a guy for getting the ball out of the defence and giving it to the midfield, so maybe someone who is different to that but also strong.
“They need to copy the Rio and Vidic partnership from the past.”

Man Utd forced to make Sergio Reguilon transfer decision ‘soon’ as Sevilla ask to have him back on loan from Real Madrid

MANCHESTER UNITED will have to make a quick decision on whether to sign Sergio Reguilon on loan.
It comes after United were believed to have been offered the Real Madrid defender on loan.

    1

Man Utd will have to make a quick decision on whether to sign Sergio Reguilon on loanAccording to Fabrizio Romano, the Old Trafford board are deciding “soon” on whether to take on the left-back.
But they will be rushed into making up their minds as Sevilla – who Reguilon played for last season – also want to bring back the 23-year-old.
The Spain international enjoyed a breakthrough season in Seville last term having been loaned out by Real Madrid.
He made 38 appearances and lifted the Europa League trophy.

And despite being voted LaLiga’s best left-back, Bernabeu boss Zinedine Zidane has no plans for Reguilon to stay in the capital this season.
But if the league champions wish to keep him on their books, the full-back could spend another season out on loan.
PSG, Juventus, Napoli and Tottenham are also among those interested in signing the player.

But United remain frontrunners to sign him, with Solskjaer keen to bolster his options at left-back and provide competition for places.

Luke Shaw remains injury prone while Brandon Williams is regarded as one for the future after his emergence.
Reguilon currently has no space in the Madrid side, with Ferland Mendy overtaking Marcelo as the club’s preferred left-back.

Alexis Sanchez reveals he wanted to QUIT Man Utd transfer and return to Arsenal after his FIRST training session

MANCHESTER UNITED flop Alexis Sanchez has revealed he wanted to leave and return to Arsenal after his FIRST training session.
The Chilean striker moved to Old Trafford in January 2018, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan going the other way.

But neither player managed to establish themselves at their respective new clubs.
Big things were expected of Sanchez when he signed his £505,000-a-week contract for United.
But that saw a miserable return of just five goals in 45 appearances in all competitions before he was shipped off on loan to Inter Milan.
Now, speaking to Pelotoros TV, the 31-year-old has revealed he felt instant regret after joining United.

He said: “After the first training session I had at Manchester United I realized many things.
“And when I got back home I told my agent if I could cancel the contract and go back to Arsenal.”
Sanchez ended up joining Inter permanently this summer, but he has failed to replicate his decent scorring record at Arsenal, managing just five goals in 30 games.
He netted 80 times in 166 games in all competitions for the Gunners.

After agreeing his move to Inter, Sanchez took a dig at his former employers United.
He said: “I’m really happy to be staying here with you, Inter fans.
“I’ve found a family here and the staff are great.
“It’s a group where there’s a real desire to win something big.
“People here want to fight together as a team to give the club the success it deserves.”
He is believed to have got a £9m pay-off to get his £505,000-a-week wages off the books.
