Luton 0 Man Utd 3: Dean Henderson enjoys dream debut as Mata, Greenwood and Rashford score

DEAN HENDERSON had waited nine years for this moment.
After progressing through the youth ranks at United, Henderson was dispatched out on loan spells to Stockport, Grimsby, Shrewsbury and Sheffield United before finally being handed a first-team debut.

So finally, he was given his debut but it looked as though he would not have a single save to make.
Then with 10 minutes left – and United struggling against Luton – Henderson proved why he could well replace David de Gea.
He is certainly convinced that De Gea will soon be toast.
Luton’s Tom Lockyer will have thought his effort was going to creep in at the near post but Henderson somehow managed to claw the ball away and from the rebound, the same Luton player saw his effort blocked by Eric Bailly.

But it was that moment of class which avoided Luton getting a deserved leveller and sending the tie into penalties. Until then, they were hanging on to Juan Mata’s penalty before subs Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood sealed the win with decent strikes at the end.
But in terms of Henderson’s one moment of class, at least Ole Gunnar Solskjaer learned one thing from this game as there was precious little else to analyse from his second XI.
No-one really took their chances to stake a place in the starting line-up for Saturday’s trip to Brighton. Equally, United will travel to either Preston or Brighton in the next round.
Yet while United’s defence was solid enough, there was very little spark going forward and Odion Ighalo looked completely isolated up front and rarely threatened.

Manchester United were awarded a whopping 22 penalties during the 2019/20 season

Jesse Lingard showed a few flashes of skill along with Donny van de Beek but it was nothing special and it was another forgettable performance from Solskjaer’s team.
This was not even Luton’s biggest game of the week as they made nine changes from Saturday as United was not even their biggest match of the week.
In a game the club’s fans have been waiting 14 years for, Luton make the short trip to Vicarage Road on Saturday for their battle against hated rivals Watford
Since that last meeting, a 1-1 draw in April 2006, Luton have tumbled out of the Football League, bounced back again through the divisions and now find themselves third in the Championship after a bright start.
Former boss Alex Ferguson always moaned about coming here to this corner of Bedfordshire and it was United’s first match at Kenilworth Road in 28 years.
Skipper Harry Maguire was the only survivor of the team while United’s only signing of a frustrating summer, £40million midfielder Van de Beek, was making his full debut.
We only saw flashes of what he is capable of and one of those moments came early on when he showed impressive awareness by allowing Lingard’s cross through his legs for Mata to pounce, but his half-decent strike was saved by James Shea.

    7

Jesse Lingard showed a few flashes of skill on a rare start for Manchester United
With his United job prospects not looking particularly bright, this was a chance for Lingard to put himself in the shop window, albeit against a team outside the Premier League.
He looked sharp enough and combined well with Van de Beek although you would have still expected United to cause a few more problems in the first half.
Luton had worked incredibly hard defensively and then they ruined it all with a needless challenge from George Moncur on Brandon Williams just before half-time.
There was not a massive amount of contact from the son of former West Ham midfielder John Moncur, but it was a silly challenge even if Williams was looking in the direction of the referee for a foul before even hitting the ground.
Mata sent Luton’s keeper the wrong way with a confidently-taken penalty and is now just one strike away from becoming the 22nd player in United’s history to reach a half century of goals.
Playing against his former club, Ryan Tunnicliffe denied the visitors a second with a goal-line block to deny Lingard while Nemanja Matic and Van de Beek had shots saved by Shea.
Henderson made that crucial save and at the end, substitute Rashford delivered a polished finish and fellow sub Greenwood stroked the ball into the far corner for 3-0.

Man Utd transfer move for Alexander Sorloth comes to nothing as Crystal Palace star joins RB Leipzig on permanent deal

MANCHESTER UNITED’S shock move for Crystal Palace flop Alexander Sorloth came to nothing as the striker signed for RB Leipzig.
The Norwegian struggled in a disastrous 12-month spell at Selhurst Park, failing to net a league goal in 16 appearances, before being sent out on loan.

He has performed well elsewhere, freely scoring for Danish side Midtjylland before his move to Palace as well as Trabzonspor.
His loan spell in Turkey last season, which came after a season-long loan in Belgium with Gent, earned Sorloth, 24, rave reviews.
An impressive 33 goals in 49 outings helped Trabzon to second in the Super Lig table and a big move has been predicted for the forward.
According to Turkish outlet Asist Analiz, United and Tottenham were hoping to fight over his services.

Trabzonspor manager Eddie Newton told SunSport in August: “If someone wants to purchase him at an agreed price then I think it would be foolhardy for the club to turn it down.”
However, Sorloth has put pen to paper on a deal at RB Leipzig – despite fears his cancelled medical would scupper the move.
Palace said: “Everyone at Crystal Palace FC wishes Alexander the very best for his career.”

Leipzig were reportedly ready to pay more than £21million to sign the player, who was only halfway through his Trabzonspor loan deal.

Spurs fans in particular have been desperate for the club to sign some back-up for Harry Kane.
Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen both struggled to score goals while waiting in reserve for the England forward, leaving Irish teenager Troy Parrott as Jose Mourinho’s only natural striker aside from Kane.

Whether the Tottenham boss utilises new loan signing Gareth Bale on the wings or through the middle remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, Manchester United have Odion Ighalo as an alternative to Anthony Martial up top.
Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood are both capable of moving centrally but the Red Devils may prefer a new addition given their struggles in signing Jadon Sancho.

Man Utd fans call for Ed Woodward to quit after Rio Ferdinand reveals brutal story of his exit

MANCHESTER UNITED fans have been left furious after Rio Ferdinand revealed his startling treatment at the hands of Ed Woodward.
The former England defender spent 12 years at Manchester United, winning six Premier League titles and a Champions League.

But his departure in 2014 was described as surprisingly abrupt, for which he blames executive vice-chairman Woodward.
Ferdinand told The High Performance Podcast: “I’ve not even said goodbye to the fans.
“You normally get an idea if you’re going to get a new deal or not, one way or the other, before the last day of the season.
“Someone normally comes to you, the CEO Ed Woodward, to say, ‘We’re not giving you a new deal’ or, ‘We know you’re not going to sign, so look for pastures new’. I didn’t get either of them.

“On the last day of the season, we played Southampton. The game finishes and I come into the changing room.
“The directors always come into the dressing room to shake the players’ hands – Bobby Charlton and Ed Woodward.

That was what really made me start thinking that this place isn’t being run properly.
    Rio Ferdinand

“[Ed] sat next to me after the game, with my boots still on, and said, ‘Listen, we’re not going to renew your deal. Thanks for your services at the club. You’re free to go on and speak to other clubs’.”
“I was like, ‘Wow, is that the way it’s going to end? Surely you could have given me a heads up before so I could have a little bit of a goodbye with the fans’ but I was just numb.

“Because it got to so late in the season, I thought there probably would be a role for me here, either playing or coaching, because they surely would have told me before this day.
“But it never happened and I just felt that I deserved to say goodbye to the fans, the people at the club, the dinnerladies… I wasn’t afforded the time to do that. I was bitter for a while, if I’m honest.
“That was what really made me start thinking that this place isn’t being run properly. This is not how the best team in the world should be doing things.”
The revelations left Red Devils supporters angry with Woodward.
Many felt the episode served to underline the club’s decline since the 48-year-old took charge in 2012 – with just one Premier League trophy won since.
One United Twitter account wrote: “Rio explaining how he was told he wasn’t getting a new contract at United. A prime example of the incompetence of Ed Woodward in the role he has at the club. Unreal treatment of somebody who gave so much to United.”

Ann added: “Shocking way to treat someone that gave so much to the club over the years.”
Dave wrote: “Woodward’s arrogance is unbelievable the bloke has a lot of power but no idea how to use it.”
Another fan tweeted: “This is a disgrace. Get Ed Woodward out of my club.”
And Pranit commented: “This is why we hate Glazers and Woodward.”
Ferdinand’s experience appears to be far from unique, however.
Patrice Evra told Sky Sports last year how Woodward reneged on a gentleman’s agreement to release the Frenchman.

He revealed: “I think he was desperate for me to stay, he did everything.
“Before the end of that season in 2013, I remember he said, ‘Patrice, you’re going to stay for another year because we’ve got an option [in your contract]’.
“But I said, ‘I wish I can but I can’t’. I needed to leave because of family reasons. He shook my hand and said, ‘I understand, we won’t sign your option’.
“Then in May I was having dinner in Dubai on my birthday and had a text from my agent. He told me to go somewhere quiet, that he was going to send me a message and for me not to get angry.

“He sent me a message with the statement from United saying they were pleased to renew my contract for another year. I go mad.
“I feel really disappointed, so I call [Woodward] and swear on the phone and threaten him. He said I couldn’t talk to the director of football like that and that he was going to fine me.
“After that Ryan Giggs called and said I couldn’t leave just because of one man, but it gave me an excuse to leave. I’d already said to my wife we were going to leave, but inside I didn’t ever really feel I could. That gave me a little push.”

Man Utd will stick with Maguire and Lindelof partnership and won’t change transfer policy despite nightmare start

MANCHESTER UNITED ‘have no plans’ to sign a new centre-half despite their defensive horror-show in the 3-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace.
Captain Harry Maguire was partnered by Victor Lindelof at the back, but both looked well off the pace as the Eagles romped to victory.

    2

United reject Wilfried Zaha in particular gave Lindelof a torrid time and helped himself to two goals.
Even Maguire looked low on confidence after a tough summer that saw him arrested and charged for his part in a brawl on his holidays in Mykonos.
He has appealed the suspended sentence handed out to him by the Greek courts.
But according to The Athletic, boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is not planning on bringing in another centre-back in the transfer window.

That means the likes of Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Marcos Rojo and Axel Tuanzebe will be the back-up for the current first-choice pair.
After the miserable loss in their season opener, United gaffer Solskjaer refused to blame the lack of transfer activity on their shock defeat.
He said: “We are always looking to improve if there is something available at the right price.
“You can see we are short and they deserved the points. They were sharper than us in challenges, tackles.

    2

“If you look at the players we have on the pitch and on the bench and not here we have to look within first and know we can perform better.
“It was an off day, everyone knows they can improve and we will improve.”
Even defender Luke Shaw called on the club to sign some more players after the home defeat.
Shaw said: “We are a very good group, but personally I think we need more players to strengthen the squad.
“It can give us a boost. When you look around at how other teams are strengthening their teams, then we must also do it to keep up with the others.”
The Red Devils are still in the hunt for Borussia Dortmund ace Jadon Sancho, and are reportedly close to snapping up Porto left-back Alex Telles.

Man Utd ‘to make £21m transfer bid for Porto star Alex Telles this week’ but other offers from England could derail move

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly ready to bid for Alex Telles amid rival interest for the Porto defender.
Having missed out on new Spurs signing Sergio Reguilon, the Red Devils remain in the market for a new left-back.

    1

Telles, 27, has been linked to United on a number of occasions and the deal appears to be picking up momentum.
Spanish journalist Jose David Lopez claims a bid of around £21million will land in the coming days.
However, the deal could be scuppered by interested clubs around the Premier League and LaLiga.
Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be keen after losing first-choice left-back Juan Bernat to a serious knee injury.

Porto opened their season with a 3-1 win over Braga on Saturday, which saw Telles bag a brace and set up the other.
The Brazil international insisted post-game that he is not thinking about his future.
But, with his contract up in June, his club are reportedly ready to cut a deal.
Telles told Sport TV: “I’m a guy who focuses a lot on work, people believe what they want, say what they want in the newspapers, but the most important thing is to be focused on my work.

“You know that and so do my team-mates, whatever happens, I’m focused on the club, I’m here, I’m playing.”
Whether Telles leaves or not is not concerning Porto coach Sergio Conceicao, who insists he will be happy so long as his club find a replacement.
He stated on the weekend: “I don’t think about it, the market is not about me.
“I am not a manager, I am a coach and I have to train the players I have. Obviously I would like to count on everyone and if someone else came in, I would not be upset at all.”

How Man Utd could line-up against Crystal Palace as van de Beek makes debut with Solskjaer missing up to 11 crocks

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER faces a sleepless night ahead of Manchester United’s season opener – with 11 players set to miss the clash.
The Red Devils play host to Crystal Palace for the 5.30pm kick-off on Saturday after their start was delayed due to last season’s Europa League run.

    2

How Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side could line up without the eleven doubts

United only played their ill-fated semi-final defeat to Sevilla just under five weeks ago with their pre-season plans taking a monster hit.
With just one week of training under their belts, coupled with a bout of Nations League ties, United stars risk not being ready.
Centre-back Axel Tuanzebe is certain to miss the game at Old Trafford as he recovers from injury.
Mason Greenwood, too, looks unlikely to play after being told to train alone since his England fiasco.

The forward, 18, was sent home along with Phil Foden by the Three Lions after breaking Covid-19 restrictions by inviting two Icelandic girls into the squad hotel.
Elsewhere in the United squad, several other players have only arrived for training in recent days and are unlikely to be match-fit for Palace.
Bruno Fernandes only touched down in Carrington at the weekend.
Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Fred, Eric Bailly and Nemanja Matic only returned on Monday.

    2

Manchester United’s possible XI if the manager takes a fitness gamble

Aaron Wan-Bissaka also began his pre-season at the start of the week after a trip to Dubai caught the right-back on the wrong side of the Government’s quarantine guidelines.
Fellow defender Phil Jones is also a fitness doubt while Sergio Romero has not yet returned for training after being relegated to third-choice goalkeeper.
That could force Solskjaer into starting Daniel James and Jesse Lingard at Old Trafford.
Academy product Lingard, 27, could play ahead of Scott McTominay and new signing Donny van de Beek in the more advanced of the three central positions.
Wantaway full-back Diogo Dalot is in line to start with Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof in defence.
Up front, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are set to be fit enough to start after the England forward skipped his country’s games – citing a lack of fitness.
Fans also eagerly await the decision between the posts with both David De Gea and Dean Henderson fit and available for selection.
Solskjaer will be desperate for improvement after a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in their only pre-season friendly.
