Ruthless Erik ten Hag demands 100% from Man Utd players or they face rotting on the bench, reveals Luke Shaw

LUKE SHAW has revealed that Manchester United’s players were allowed to swing the lead until ruthless Erik ten Hag came along. And he points to himself as an example of someone who suffered the consequences of failing to maintain the standards demanded by the Dutchman.

In a direct dig at previous United bosses Ralf Rangnick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he declares that even when standards dropped on the pitch or in training, under-performing stars were still allowed to keep their places.
But England left-back Shaw stresses not now with Ten Hag around, saying: “The good thing with this manager, this gaffer, is that if you’re not playing well then you won’t play.
“In the past that’s not been the case. But the good thing about this manager is that he’s keeping everyone on their toes.
“He makes sure that everyone is 100% every day. If you’re not at it then you won’t play. That’s a positive thing.”

Last season was Manchester United’s worst of the Premier League era.
They slumped from second in the previous campaign to sixth, winning only 16 games, scoring just 57 goals and finishing on a record low of 58 points.
But since he replaced Rangnick this summer, Ten Hag has shown the squad that any big name will fall if they don’t produce.
Only on Sunday he dumped Marcus Rashford to the bench after he failed to score in his previous two games.

Cristiano Ronaldo started just his second Prem game of the season in the scoreless draw with Newcastle United – but was hauled off in favour of Rashford in the second half.
He may now find himself back with the subs again when Tottenham visit Old Trafford tomorrow, having shown how unhappy he was to be replaced against Toon by shaking his head repeatedly as he trudged off.
Skipper Harry Maguire was unceremoniously ditched after the 4  0 humiliation at Brentford in the second game of the season.
He is now nearing fitness after pulling a hamstring in England’s 3 – 3 draw with Germany on September 26, but faces a fight to break up the central defensive partnership of Raphael Varane and £58M summer signing Lisandro Martinez.
Jadon Sancho, Fred and Scott McTominay have also had the tap on the shoulder from Ten Hag – just like Shaw did with Maguire after the Brentford debacle.
He missed four Prem games in a row and over the next 50 days was given just 20 Europa League minutes against Sheriff having been replaced by understudy Tyrell Malacia.
He only took over from the £15M signing from Feyenoord at half time in the 6-3 derby mauling by Manchester City at the start of this month.
    SHAW THING
But he doesn’t blame Ten Hag for dropping him, admitting: “To be honest I didn’t really need him to say anything to me.
“I knew. I knew the first two games were nowhere near good enough.
“I completely understood that it was my time to come out of the team.
“The results were bad, my performances were not good enough.
“I just had to keep training hard every day in training so the manager could see I was training hard.
“I was just waiting for my opportunity and had to bide my time because the team were doing well and we were winning. You can’t moan.”
    LUKE WANTS MORE
Shaw, in his eighth year at United after arriving for £30M for Southampton, stresses  “I think I’m at that age that it’s about time I start being more consistent.
“Over the years I’ve had a lot of ups and down.
“For me that’s not good enough and not what I want to be achieving.
“It’s all about consistency and I just need to keep training hard, keep the focus and give everything I can for the team.“
Shaw suggests that one player who doesn’t have to worry about Ten Hag’s axe right now is diminutive central defender Martinez.
That spells more bad news for Maguire, with Shaw saying he has been “unbelievable” since his £58M entrance from Ajax this summer.

He adds:  “You can see everyone loves him. The fans love him. His left foot is unbelievable.
“His aggression, his passion, we need him in that backline. He brings that every game. I am really pleased to have him in the team.” More

But Ronaldo barely had a sniff throughout the tight encounter – bar a 48th minute strike correctly ruled out for offside.
And Erik ten Hag decided enough was enough when he replaced the striker with Marcus Rashford in the 70th minute.
United fans saluted their iconic forward when his famous No7 flashed up on the board.
However, Ronnie was less than enthused when he realised he was being summoned.

Ronaldo then started shaking his head as he made his way off the field.
And the five-time Ballon d’Or winner could also be seen muttering under his breath before giving Rashford a half-hearted high-five.
It was just Ronaldo’s second start in the Premier League this season.

And his clear disgruntlement could raise further questions over his long-term future under Ten Hag.
However, replacement Rashford fared little better as United failed to find a way past Newcastle.
Brazilian midfielder Fred was gifted a golden opportunity to win it late on.
But despite having just one defender on the line to beat, he managed to send his effort wide.
Newcastle will also feel they could have grabbed all three points after ace Joelinton hit the post TWICE.

The Mail claims United have introduced tougher rules for renewals next season.
Fans must have their tickets scanned at a minimum of 10 league home games.

And United have now emailed affected fans telling them the games will not count towards the renewal requirements – unless they can PROVE they were there.

But if there aren’t enough sent back, United will remove them at random through a lottery-style ballot.
A MUST statement said: “We are consulting lawyers about a potential class action for interference with contract and also a judicial review for what looks like an irrational decision.”
Committee member Oli Winton added: “This sets a horrific precedent for all events, let alone football matches.

United have bounced back from this month’s 6-3 derby defeat at Man City with narrow wins over Omonia and Everton.
But Ten Hag will be looking for further improvements when his side host the Cypriot minnows in Thursday’s Europa League clash at Old Trafford.
One man who will be hoping to make an appearance from the off is 18-year-old Garnacho.
The Argentina youth international is rated as United’s brightest prospect.

However, Garnacho has made just three sub appearances so far this season.
And he has plenty of competition in the forward line, with even Cristiano Ronaldo unable to command a regular spot.
However, Parker believes Garnacho has plenty to offer United, advising Ten Hag to start the teen as he has “fire in his belly.”
Parker told BeMyBet: “I think really you have to look at what you got within the squad.

“There’s a younger player, Alejandro Garnacho. Everyone was kind of talking about him in the pre-season.
“Garnacho has a bit of him, he’s tenacious and he’s got a bit, a lot of Argentinians are playing with a fire in the belly and are a bit fiery, and he’s got a competitive edge.
“And I think someone like him maybe needs a run. With good players around him, he could probably perform quite well.”
Parker also hinted Garnacho’s inclusion could come at Rashford’s expense.
The striker, 24, has enjoyed an upturn in form under Ten Hag, scoring five goals in nine games.
But Parker believes Rashford’s work rate tracking back could be improved vastly.
Parker reckons the pressure is off for now, but Rashford should work harder off the ball or else risk being “embarrassed”.
Parker added: “Looking at Rashford, he is not in a position where his teammates will look at him and think he will work hard enough.
“They won’t look at him to win the ball back after he loses it.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner got his chance to score what would be only his second goal of the season as he started against Omonia in Nicossia.
The star forward led the attack but couldn’t register his 700th career goal, with the Red Devils finding themselves trailing 1-0 on 34 minutes after ex-Nottingham Forest ace Karim Ansarifard’s opener.
But thankfully for the Manchester giants, it all changed after Rashford and Martial came off the bench as they scored within minutes of their introduction.
Rashford equalised in the 53rd minute, just eight minutes after he replaced Jadon Sancho.

Many are now expecting the United legend to continue playing back-up to Rashford and Martial.

Since that transfer, Ten Hag has reminded Antony of his defensive responsibilities in all United’s training sessions at Carrington.
The message was reinforced to the 22-year-old before the clash with Manchester City at the Etihad.
But Antony seemingly forgot those instructions much to the frustration of his manager and right-back Diogo Dalot, who had no protection.
At one point in the rout, Dalot  remonstrated with Antony, who scored a scorching 30-yard strike, as he was constantly exposed down the flank by both Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva.
