Former Man Utd star Shinji Kagawa now a free agent after having Real Zaragoza contract terminated a SEASON early

FORMER Manchester United ace Shinji Kagawa is a free agent after his Real Zaragoza contract was terminated.
The Japanese midfielder, 31, had his deal ripped up by mutual consent a SEASON before it was due to end.

Spanish second-division side Zaragoza confirmed Kagawa’s departure on Friday, even though he signed a two-year contract last summer.
A club statement read: “Real Zaragoza has ended the contractual relationship it had with footballer Shinji Kagawa.
“The club wishes to express thanks for the professionalism shown by the player during the time that he has worn the Zaragoza shirt, while wishing him future professional success.”
In an online press conference, Kagawa expressed his regret at the situation.

He said: “To be honest, it’s not what I wanted. I really regret having to leave unexpectedly.”
Kagawa spent two season with the Red Devils before rejoining Borussia Dortmund in 2014.
Sir Alex Ferguson brought him to Old Trafford in 2012 after paying the German club £12million.
Kagawa made 57 appearances in all competitions, bagging just six goals and ten assists.

Before arriving in Spain last year, Kagawa had spent the 2018-19 campaign on loan at Besiktas in Turkey.
He notched four goals and one assist in 31 league appearances for Zaragoza last season.
Kagawa is thought to want to stay in Spain, with fellow second-division side Sabadell interested, according to The Mainichi.
He added: “From here, I have to think about it. I am at the stage of organising my future.”

Edinson Cavani transfer to Man Utd takes step closer and 33-year-old free agent ‘could fly to UK TODAY’

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly close to sealing a sensational deal to sign free-agent Edinson Cavani.
And the former Paris Saint-Germain striker could fly into the UK today to seal the deal.

    1

Could Manchester United be closing in on the signing of Edinson Cavani?Credit: Reuters

MailOnline reports that United ‘are holding talks’ with the 33-year-old and that his signing ‘would make economic and sporting sense’.
Clubs’ finances across the spectrum have been hit by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and subsequent restrictions.
Atletico Madrid, Benfica and Inter Miami are all interested in the Uruguayan striker.

But his reported demands of £210,000-week and a two-year contract are proving difficult for those three teams to meet.
Meanwhile United have made a stuttering start to the season and have lacked that killer touch up top.
Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood don’t appear to have hit the ground running so far.
United have previously tried to sign Cavani when David Moyes was in charge in 2014, but that proved fruitless.

He has also been linked with an equally-sensational move to Premier League new-boys Leeds.

He netted 200 goals in 301 appearances for PSG before deciding to end his time with the French giants this summer.
United’s top target remains Jadon Sancho.
But with the days ticking down until the international transfer window slams shut, United have been unable to agree on a fee with his club Borussia Dortmund.
Barcelona’s wantaway winger Ousmane Dembele has emerged as a possible alternative, with a loan deal mooted.
Porto left-back Alex Telles is also believed to be a transfer target, but again the two clubs can’t agree on a fee.

Solskjaer should follow Mourinho’s example and take Carabao Cup seriously.. it can work wonders for Man Utd

THERE was a big reason Jose Mourinho was so effusive in his celebrations after Tottenham beat Chelsea on penalties to reach the last eight of the League Cup.
He knows what the little-loved competition can do for a team, particularly one he has just taken over.

    3

It was why he took it very seriously at the start of both spells in charge at Chelsea winning the competition in 2004-05 and 2014-15 as a prelude to lifting the title in both campaigns.
It was the same reason why he celebrated United winning the competition in his first season in charge at Old Trafford in 2016-17.
They went on to win the Europa League at the end of that season and finished second in the league the next and reached the FA Cup final.
A piece of silverware gives a team confidence, a belief.

It gives them a taste, and they want more.
Which was why United’s failure at the semi-final stage of three competitions last season was such a disappointment for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Such an effort, so many extra games for nothing as they failed to make the final step.
You couldn’t argue with defeat against Manchester City over two legs in the Carabao Cup, they were just that much better.

But the tinkering with his team against Chelsea in the semi-finals of the FA Cup cost him.
Against Sevilla in the semi-finals of the Europa it was a case of one team wanting it more, and United should have wanted it more.
Would the tiredness they seem to be feeling less than two months after that disappointment be there if they were still living off the adrenalin of lifting that trophy?
Which is why Solskjaer should take this competition very seriously.
He was able to make ten changes and still field a strong side in beating Brighton, who had made nine.
Their superior strength in depth ensured they would always be favourites once the team-sheets arrived.

The quarters are not now until December, the semis in January and the final in February.
Why not play your full strength side. The Champions League will not be a concern around the dates until possibly around the Carabao final.
But a good result in that first knockout round first-leg prior to that will have them flying were they to make it that far in both competitions.
The worth a trophy would give this new young team of Solskjaer cannot be calculated in the millions United continue to spend on players.
Just ask Jose. Solskjaer will get his chance in fact this Sunday when the Special One is back at Old Trafford.

Man Utd ratings: Pogba reminds Solskjaer of talents, Mata sparkles but James needs loaning out

MANCHESTER UNITED coasted into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a 3-0 win against Brighton – and gave boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a selection headache.
Goals from Scott McTominay, Juan Mata and a stunning Paul Pogba free-kick made it back-to-back wins against the Seagulls after their dramatic last-gasp win in the Premier League at the weekend.

Pogba climbed off the bench in the second half, and helped to add some gloss to the scoreline as his free-kick was deflected in by the unlucky Joel Veltman.
Here, SunSport’s John Hutchinson rates how the United players fared in their cup clash on the south coast.
    Dean Henderson – 7
Finally given the chance to impress with David De Gea rested from action.

Made a smart save on 26 minutes from Alexis Mac Allister’s rasping drive and an even better one from Leandro Trossard, down low on 67 minutes.
    Diogo Dalot – 7
Portuguese right-back never seems to do much wrong when he plays, yet is constantly linked with a move away from Old Trafford.
Provided decent attacking threat and was solid in the tackle. Better competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka than Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

    Eric Bailly – 9
Talked up by his manager before kick off, it’s a real make-or-break season for the Ivorian.
Showed good strength and recovery speed throughout, and surely worth a punt going forward such have United’s defensive weaknesses been.

    Victor Lindelof – 6
Given the runaround by Brighton’s nippy little striker Mac Allister.
There was no rest for Lindelof in Solskajer’s cup XI – perhaps it’s the boss giving the Swede one last chance to prove he has what it takes in the team.
    Brandon Williams – 7
When the 20-year-old bombed forward United looked pretty potent.
Not much to choose between Williams and Shaw in the left-back slot.
    Scott McTominay – 7
His goal was just what the young Scot needed – with confidence seeming low recently.
There’s a lot of competition in the middle of the park now, but McTominay rarely lets anyone down.

    6

    Fred – 6
The Brazilian has been the odd one out for Solskjaer this season in the Premier League.
But United fans will tell you he offers more than Matic. Nothing to shout home about but was tidy enough.
    Juan Mata – 8
Mata won and then took the free-kick that led to McTominay’s opening goal. He capped a fine performance with the crucial second goal for his team.
What he might lack in a bit of ‘get up and go’ these days, he makes up in his sublime range of passing and set-piece prowess.

Donny Van de Beek – 7
His agent didn’t help when he criticised United not starting the summer signing in the Prem.
Started tonight, and beautifully laid in Mata for United’s second. Pressed his claims.
    Daniel James – 4
Totally anonymous first 45 minutes, and another player who looks short on confidence.
Chose the wrong pass at regular intervals before being hooked. Needs a loan spell to re-ignite his career.

    6

It was another bad day at the office for Daniel JamesCredit: Getty Images – Getty
    Odion Ighalo – 5
The Nigerian won’t be replacing Marcus Rashford up top any time soon.
Signed as back-up and set to stay as that, Ighalo had one great chance in the first half but fired into the side netting. Subbed off for Rashford on 68 minutes.
    Substitutes
    Paul Pogba (replaced James, 68) – 8
Instantly impacted the game after being involved in the move that led to Mata’s goal.
Could have scored on 75 minutes when his header went just wide. But the Frenchman wasn’t to be denied, and curled in a beauty of a free-kick, via a deflection for the third goal.

    Marcus Rashford (replaced Ighalo, 68) – 6
Didn’t do much, but even that was probably more than Ighalo.
    Jesse Lingard (replaced Fred, 81) – 5
A couple of probing runs, but didn’t have enough time to do much.

Sevilla supremo Monchi ‘cannot believe’ Man Utd don’t have a sporting director to mastermind transfer business

MANCHESTER UNITED not having a sporting director is ‘unbelievable’ according to Sevilla’s man in that role, Monchi.
It is believed United were considering bringing in someone in that position to work with boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and executive vice chairman Ed Woodward.

    1

United legends Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra had discussions over the potential role.
Ex-PSG chief Antero Henrique and Red Bull’s head of sport Ralf Rangnick were also sounded out.
But Old Trafford bosses cooled their interest in finding someone for the role earlier this year.
Now highly-respected Monchi, who has himself been linked with United and Arsenal, believes the Premier League giants are missing out by not having a sporting director.

Speaking to the Telegraph, the 52-year-old said: “This is my opinion – all clubs should have this position.
“What is the main function? To dedicate the time to everything that relates on a sports level.
“Where 60-70 per cent of the budget is allocated to the first team, if you don’t have a specialist who deals with that, it is very difficult to understand.
“I do understand there are very successful clubs – Manchester United are probably one of the top five in the world, but they do not have that specific position.

Four Premier League teams crack the top ten highest wage bills in Europe

“But I think that clubs more and more are aware that they really need this position and also we are the connection between the technical staff, the squad, the board, we know the market, we get lots of information through the different scouts.
“So, for me, I can’t believe a club does not have this particular position.
“Logically, I have to believe in it because that’s what I do. But I do think it’s essential.”
Monchi left Italian giants Roma in March 2019 and was thought to be in line for move to the Emirates as a Director of Football.
But the Gunners missed out, and the 52-year-old returned to his old club Sevilla.
    TALENT SPOTTER
He spent his playing career as a goalkeeper at Sevilla before taking on the role as Director of Football at the same club in 2000.
In his 17 years in the post, Monchi helped them win 11 trophies, including five Uefa Cup and Europa League titles.
But it was his ability to unearth young talent that has earned him such a strong reputation.
He helped find the likes of Sergio Ramos and Jose Antonio Reyes and brought them through the club’s academy.
Meanwhile, he signed Dani Alves, Julio Baptista and Ivan Rakitic before selling them on for big profits.

Ex-Man Utd stars Brown, Fletcher and O’Shea would be branded ‘f***ing s***’ by modern fans, claims Rafael

RAFAEL claims modern fans would brand fellow ex-Manchester United stars Darren Fletcher, West Brown and John O’Shea “f***ing s***” –  as he pleaded for more patience over boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Brazil right-back Rafael, 30, believes harsh, instant verdicts from today’s social media generation damage current Old Trafford players like Fred.

And the Istanbul Basaksehir star claims there is far too much “negativity” as he urged supporters to “relax and trust” Solskjaer and his squad.
That might sound a tad rich coming from a player who slated Louis van Gaal as being “one of the worst people” and having a “s***” reign as United manager.
But Rafael told The Athletic: ‘If you see some players who played very well for Manchester United, these days if they played in this team … I speak about Wesley Brown, John O’Shea, Darren Fletcher..
“I speak about many of us, players who are good Manchester United players historically. But these days, everyone would have said, ‘F***ing s**t, why is this guy playing for United?’

“F***ing hell, guys, these players are there for a reason. Give them some trust and confidence.
“I am not saying everything is right at United. Many things went wrong and they did wrong but not everything is s**t.

“You see Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Even Fred. Fred is not a flop. He is a good player and sometimes he is not even playing.
“You say you want more midfielders? F****ing hell, Fred is not even playing sometimes.

“You say he is a bad player? He is not a bad player. But these days, Twitter. People are there, like a computer, saying, ‘Delete the club; or ‘S**t coach, s**t player’.”

Fans rip into penalty-loving Man Utd after they appear to score AFTER full-time whistle in 100th-minute Brighton win

MANCHESTER UNITED have been accused of ‘finding another cheat level’ after scoring ‘after the final whistle’ against Brighton.
Referee Chris Kavanagh blew for full-time in the 98th minute against The Seagulls with the two teams tied at 2-2.

Rival fans must be scared now , You can’t even celebrate after the final whistle cause United can still find a way to score a penalty 😂
    — Ugbedeojo (@Certifiedopeboi) September 26, 2020

But United players were furiously appealing for a handball – and the official soon had VAR in his ear.
Neal Maupay, who earlier in the game had scored a brilliant panenka penalty, had raised his arm at a Harry Maguire header.
Kavanagh then awarded the visitors a penalty, and Bruno Fernandes did what he usually does and slammed home what turned out to be the winning goal.
And while the decision was the right one according to BT Sport’s former ref Simon Walton, it didn’t stop rival football fans lambasting it.

One posted on Twitter: “Rival fans must be scared now. You can’t even celebrate after the final whistle cause United can still find a way to score a penalty.
JJ Omojuwa posted: “VAR penalty after final whistle? Lol. Man United have unlocked another cheat level.”
Bill Hardy tweeted: “United’s penalty winner came at 90+10, who was refereeing, Alex Ferguson?”
David Messer was not happy, posting that the game was ‘a con’.

The goal, timed at 99mins 45secs, is the latest scored in the Premier League since Juan Mata’s strike for Chelsea against Norwich in August 2011.

Brighton 2 Man Utd 3: Fernandes nets penalty winner in 100th minute as Maupay goes from hero to villain in thriller

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER scored a few injury-time winners in his goal-poaching heyday.
But even in the glory days of ‘Fergie Time’, he never managed a decisive goal AFTER the final whistle was blown.

Bruno Fernandes did just that to settle an afternoon of gloriousbedlam and hand Manchester United an extraordinarily lucky victory.
When Solly March – who had just netted a 95th-minute equaliser -cleared a Harry Maguire header off the line, ref Chris Kavanagh blew the final whistle.
Yet he was then persuaded by VAR official Simon Hooper to consult his pitch-side monitor and award a penalty for handball against Neal Maupay.

    9

Solly March’s 95th minute winner looked to have settled itCredit: Getty – Pool
And all this after Brighton became the first team to hit the goal frame FIVE times in a Premier League match since Opta stats began 17 years ago – with no team ever previously managing four.

Graham Potter’s men struck both crossbars and three of the four posts and were also denied by VAR when they had a debatable penalty award overturned.
So to say that United got lucky to claim this comeback victory is a vast understatement.
A Lewis Dunk own goal and a brilliant Marcus Rashford effort had cancelled out Neal Maupay’s spot-kick opener.
But United were fortunate to avoid back-to-back defeats at the start of a Premier League campaign for the first time in 28 years as Brighton enjoyed more possession and many more scoring opportunities.

    9

Marcus Rashford gets the plaudits for his brilliant goal putting United 2-1 upCredit: Reuters

Solskjaer ended up with five at the back and two defensive midfielders as United clung on for dear life.
It was a crucial win to lift the mood of despondency around Old Trafford – yet the performance did little to calm those supporters urging United to get busy in the transfer market.
Solskjaer sounded confident that their opening defeat by Crystal Palace had simply been a blip, a result of United starting their season a week late and being caught cold.
But United began tentatively here, with Brighton purposeful and the hosts almost went in front on nine minutes when Leandro Trossard turned and hammered a shot against the post.

Albion’s new sensation, wing-back Tariq Lamptey was soon darting inside, slipping past United players and winning a free-kick.
When United discovered some attacking momentum, Mason Greenwood dragged a shot wide.
But having hit one upright, Trossard then shook the other, anotherturn on the edge of the box followed by a low drive which had David De Gea beaten.
Then the Spanish keeper pushed an Adam Webster header away onto the bar with United rocking.

    9

Lewis Dunk was unlucky to poke past his own keeper that made it 1-1Credit: EPA
They might have had the opener on 33 minutes when Anthony Martial toasted Ben White and supplied Marcus Rashford, who squared for Greenwood to shoot home only for an offside flag to deny him.
Yet it was Brighton who took a deserved lead five minutes before the break when Bruno Fernandes – who had won and converted a fair few spot-kicks last season was penalised for tripping Lamptey.
Fernandes, who had already been booked, was fortunate to escape a second yellow but Maupay was as cool as the sea breeze with a dinked slow-motion spot-kick.
United were back on terms within three minutes, though, as Solly March chopped down Luke Shaw and Fernandes delivered a forceful free-kick to the back post where Nemanja Matic forced it back into the centre and Lewis Dunk, under pressure from Maguire, prodded into his own net.

Solskjaer’s men had a huge let-off straight after the restart when Aaron Connolly fell under pressure from Paul Pogba and ref Chris Kavanagh pointed to the spot.
VAR official Simon Hooper told Kavanagh to take a look at his pitch-side monitor and with Maguire yelling ‘Come on Chris, it’s obvious’, the ref decided he had made a clear error, when in truth the decision could have gone either way.
Yet VAR evened it up almost immediately, ruling out a Rashford effort, side-footed home from a Martial cross, for a marginal offside call.
Rashford did not take long to muster an effort which no official, in Brighton or Stockley park could rule out.

    9

This was a common sight during the game – ref Chris Kavanagh checking VARCredit: EPA
Fernandes pierced Brighton’s high defensive line with a sweeping and Rashford did a comprehensive mincemeating job on Ben White, beating then centre-half once, turning down the opportunity then beating him again before thumping home.
The contest was still wide open, thought and Brighton soon struck the woodwork for a fourth time when Maupay fed March who drilled against the inside of the far post.
Pogba, who’d had one of his semi-detached afternoons, was dragged off to make way for Fred as Solskjaer looked to shore up.
Then Trossard battered a shot against the crossbar to bring up Brighton’s extraordinary woodwork stat and De Gea denied Trossard from close-range in injury-time.
But March headed home from a Lamptey cross on 95 minutes but there was time for one more United attack – and for all hell to break loose.
