United’s misery was compounded by Anthony Martial getting a straight red on 28 minutes for slapping Spurs midfielder Erik Lamela.

The 25-year-old told Sky Sports: “It was a lack of concentration and then a mistake, another mistake, another mistake.
“We switched off. It really hurts.

“Manchester United shouldn’t lose in this manner. It really hurts, it’s embarrassing and we’ve let a lot of people down.
“We’ve let ourselves down and the staff down.
“We need to look in the mirror, we are nowhere near it at the moment. Maybe it’s lucky that we’ve got a break now.
“When we went down to 10 men maybe we gave up, there wasn’t that character on the pitch. We were too quiet and naive. There was many mistakes, we need to do more.

Man Utd ratings: Maguire a shadow of former self, Pogba offers nothing and Martial petulant as they come

MANCHESTER UNITED were reduced to ten men and subsequently thumped by Tottenham in an Old Trafford shocker.
Anthony Martial was sent off for a slap on Erik Lamela – and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side them imploded to lose 6-1 to the side managed by their former boss Jose Mourinho.

Things had started so well for the Red Devils when Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot after just two minutes.
But it ended in horrible fashion, as two goals apiece from Heung-min Son and Harry Kane and strikes from Tanguy Ndombele and Serge Aurier turned it into a pasting.
Here, SunSport’s Paul Jiggins runs the rule of how United’s players fared – and it makes grim reading.

Could not be blamed this time – although at no stage did you fancy him to keep Spurs at bay.

    PAUL POGBA – 3

Man Utd verdict: Kane masterclass shows Red Devils exactly what they are missing with Martial sent off for Lamela slap

SOMETIMES the best things in life are staring you straight in the face.
And for Manchester United – who have spent months on an ’embarrassing’ £100million pursuit of Jadon Sancho – Harry Kane showed them exactly what they are missing.

    2

    2

Kane and Son Heung-min (left) ran riot against Manchester UnitedCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd

The Tottenham striker delivered a man of the match performance and played a central role in a historically bad first-half rout of United along with partner in crime Son Heung-min.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side shipped four goals in the first 45 minutes for the first time EVER in the Premier League.
Incredibly, they had got off to the perfect start when Davinson Sanchez bundled over current centre-forward Anthony Martial with barely 30 seconds on the clock, allowing Bruno Fernandes to convert from the spot.
But then the nightmare truly began at the Theatre of Dreams with Harry Maguire the chief villain.

The skipper was at fault for no less than THREE of Spurs’ first-half strikes as Jose Mourinho’s side tore apart his old club.
    Maguire’s rap sheet was lengthy.
One count of friendly fire after hauling down Luke Shaw in the build-up to Spurs’ first goal, then he naively allowed Kane to assist Son with a quick free-kick, before seeing Serge Aurier set up the South Korean for another by nutmegging the £85m man.
So, with the window slamming shut at 11pm on Monday, what can 16th-placed United do to arrest their slide?

Left-back Alex Telles appears to be arriving from Porto – and could immediately replace Luke Shaw who somehow escaped a red after a horrible second-half hack on Lucas Moura – but it is the middle of the back four where the Red Devils are in dire need of reinforcements.
Surely the £100m earmarked for Sancho, would be far better spent bolstering the leaky, blunder-prone defence.
With Simon Jordan comparing Maguire’s speed to that of an ocean liner, pace is a priority in a potential defensive partner.
And who better than RB Leipzig’s 21-year-old defender Dayot Upamecano, a shining light in their run to the Champions League semi-finals last term, and open to a move next summer.

Alternatively, Ed Woodward should have taken United legend Wayne Rooney’s advice and written a blank cheque to persuade Daniel Levy to let United poach talisman Kane.
Everyone has a price and the England skipper has the tools required to finally fill the void at Old Trafford.
Instead, free agent Edinson Cavani is set to arrive, bringing bags of experience and proven goalscoring ability.
But the 33-year-old Uruguayan is a short-term solution, papering over the cracks.
Cavani will provide competition for Martial – who can hang his head in shame after a ludicrous slap on Erik Lamela ensured he took an early bath for the first time in his club career.
And with United hit for six and Kane the architect, it could not be clearer what they were lacking.

Watch horror Harry Maguire gaffe as Man Utd captain gifts Spurs their first goal and appears to take out Luke Shaw

HARRY MAGUIRE’S horrendous gaffe gifted Tottenham their first goal after he took out team-mate Luke Shaw.
The Red Devils skipper made a horrible mess of dealing with the danger to allow Spurs an immediate way back into Sunday’s Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

Maguire and new centre-back partner Eric Bailly exchanged equally ill-advised headers on the edge of their own box after a Spurs throw had been deflected towards them.
Maguire then headed the ball back towards David De Gea – but his backpass was so under-hit it barely got past covering left-back Luke Shaw.
And as Shaw went to put his body between Erik Lamela and the ball, his captain bizarrely appeared to tug on his shoulder, pulling Shaw down and out of the way.
The ball broke for Tanguy Ndombele and despite Maguire’s despairing attempt at a block the ball ricocheted past De Gea to level the game up at 1-1.

Things went from bad to worse for Maguire just three minutes later when he fouled England colleague Harry Kane.
Kane sprung up and was allowed to take a quick free-kick with Maguire choosing to not cynically block the immediate pass and instead found himself out of position high up the pitch.
Kane threaded a ball neatly through the heart of United’s defence allowing Son Heung-min to make it 2-1 after just seven minutes with Maguire stranded in no man’s land.
After Kane got himself on the scoresheet, Serge Aurier nutmegged Maguire to assist Son’s second goal and make it 4-1 to Jose Mourinho’s jubilant Spurs.

United had been gifted a penalty barely 30 seconds in after Davinson Sanchez’s rash challenge on Anthony Martial allowed Bruno Fernandes to convert yet another spot-kick.
But Maguire’s initial howler sparked a dreadful first-half turnaround for United – which included Martial’s first red card in his club career for slapping Lamela.
The Red Devils conceded four goals in the first-half of a Prem clash for the first time ever.
And the onslaught continued after the break with Aurier burying a fifth goal.
Harry Kane then capped a man of the match performance by slamming home a penalty to hit United for six.

Watch Anthony Martial get sent off for slapping Lamela – but Man Utd ace appeared to be elbowed in neck first

MANCHESTER UNITED striker Anthony Martial was sent off for slapping Erik Lamela – but the Frenchman appeared to be elbowed on the neck first.
United’s home clash against Tottenham was already dramatic enough with three goals in the first eight minutes.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, already 2-1 down, were reduced to ten men when Martial lost his cool.
Spurs were preparing to take a corner when the Frenchman clashed with Lamela.
Replays showed the Spurs midfielder falling to the ground after Martial put his hand into his face.
But just prior to this, as the pair jostled in the box, Lamela’s elbow appeared to make contact with Martial’s neck.

Referee Anthony Taylor brandished the red card, but players and the Sky Sports commentators weren’t sure who had been given an early bath.
Taylor had VAR in his ear, but the official seemed confident he had got it right, and it was Martial who was sent marching down the tunnel.
The 24-year-old looked as stunned as his team-mates as he contemplated an early end to his game.
United were 2-1 down at this point, with Bruno Fernandes’ second minute penalty being cancelled out by goals Tanguy Ndombele and Heung-min Son.

Lamela should have gone too, says Mark Halsey

ANTHONY MARTIAL was sent off for an act of violent conduct but Erik Lamela should have received the same punishment.
What was the difference in their conduct? The only difference was Tottenham’s Lamela was a disgrace in the way he went down — the Argentine got the Manchester United striker red-carded.
Was it violent conduct? Not for me. And had Martial acted in the same way then Lamela too would have been dismissed.
When you raise your hands you do run the risk of a red card.
Both should have been  cautioned  for  adopting an aggressive attitude towards each other.
But I’m not convinced ref Anthony Taylor saw the initial contact by Lamela so I can’t understand why VAR ref Stuart Attwell didn’t recommend a review on the monitor.
Spurs boss Jose Mourinho felt United should have finished with eight men. I don’t believe Eric Bailly deliberately stamped on Harry Kane’s calf. VAR viewed the incident and felt it wasn’t a red card.
But Luke Shaw was lucky not to be sent off for a serious foul play challenge on Lucas Moura. He had no chance of winning the ball and if the contact was higher he could have broken Moura’s leg.

    4

And just two minutes after Martial’s red, Harry Kane slammed home for 3-1.
Things got even worse for Solskjaer’s shell-shocked troops when Son netted his second as Spurs went in at half-time 4-1 up.
Serge Aurier added a fifth after the break before Kane’s late penalty made it SIX.
Former Liverpool hardman Graeme Souness was fuming with Lamela’s reaction in the melee.
He told Sky Sports: “Pathetic. A tickle across the chops.
“Is that what the English game is all about?
“Lamela will sleep well tonight because he thinks he will have done a great piece of work for his team.
“That’s not us, but that is in our game now.” More

Edinson Cavani ‘agrees Man Utd transfer’ with ex-PSG star set to sign two-year deal

MANCHESTER UNITED have reportedly agreed a two-year contract with striker Edinson Cavani.
The 33-year-old is a free agent having left Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

Now, according to ESPN, the Uruguayan will pull on United’s famous red shirt after agreeing terms.
Cavani is set to fly to Manchester from Paris on Sunday to complete a medical.
The deal is likely to be officially announced either later that day or Monday.
Atletico Madrid, Benfica and Inter Miami were interested in the Uruguayan striker.

But his reported demands of £210,000-week and a two-year contract proved a stumbling block.
Meanwhile United have made a stuttering start to the season and have lacked that killer touch up top.
Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood have so far failed to match their post-restart form.
United have previously tried to sign Cavani when David Moyes was in charge in 2014, but that proved fruitless.

He has also been linked with an equally-sensational move to Premier League new-boys Leeds.
He netted 200 goals in 301 appearances for PSG before deciding to end his time with the French giants this summer.
United’s top target was believed to be Jadon Sancho, but the Cavani signing may mean the Premier League giants have accepted defeat.
