Alex Telles seals Man Utd transfer on £15.3m deal from Porto after Spurs humiliation exposed need to replace Shaw

MANCHESTER UNITED have completed the deadline day transfer of Alex Telles from Porto.
The left-back joins a Red Devils side fresh from a 6-1 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday.

Luke Shaw’s horror show in the Old Trafford thumping helped expose United’s defensive frailties, with 11 goals conceded in three Premier League games.
And, on Monday, the club confirmed the £15.3million capture of Telles.
A medical was completed on Sunday evening after negotiations over the left-back’s transfer fee.
Out of contract at Porto next year, United had seen a bid of £12m rejected in their hunt for defensive improvements.

But Shaw’s nightmare outing, just one part of an all-round terrible display against Spurs, emphasised the need for a signing.
Despite breaking into the team last season, fellow full-back Brandon Williams is yet to appear in the league in 2020-21.
Limited to Carabao Cup action, the 20-year-old signed a new four-year deal in the summer.
Reports suggest there is Premier League interest in taking Williams on loan, particularly after the arrival of Telles.

💬 “I’m coming here to give my all.”🤩 Alex Telles is buzzing for his next chapter at #MUFC, and you can hear more from our latest signing here 👇
    — Manchester United (@ManUtd) October 5, 2020

The Brazil international, 27, spent the last four years with Porto, helping seal a league and cup double last season.
Arriving in England with the defender will be partner Priscila Minuzzo, who made headlines in Brazil for founding a charity that helps disadvantaged youngsters learn through the medium of street dance.
Speaking to the official club website, Telles said: “To join a club with the prestige of Manchester United is a huge honour.
“You have to work hard to get to this moment in your career and now I am coming to this club, I can promise that I will give everything in my heart to be a success here.
“I won many trophies at FC Porto and I want to continue that at United. The manager has a clear plan and direction for this team and I can’t wait to pull on the famous shirt.”
Questions have been asked of manager Solskjaer amid United’s difficult start to the campaign.

And the Norwegian believes Telles can provide an element of mental toughness that his squad has been lacking.
Solskjaer noted: “He is a player we have been tracking for some time and his performances over the past few years are exactly what we are looking for.
“He is a fighter and a winner and will add real determination and competition to the squad.
“Alex has the qualities, both as a player and as a person, that we want here at Manchester United.”

Frantic Man Utd target Sarr on loan transfer as yet ANOTHER Jadon Sancho alternative but Watford want permanent sale

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly seeking a loan deal for Ismaila Sarr having so far failed to sign Jadon Sancho.
The end of a long summer transfer saga involving the Borussia Dortmund winger and the Red Devils is nigh, without an agreement in sight.

That has forced United to look elsewhere to bolster Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attack.
And French outlet Telefoot report on an approach to take Watford winger Sarr on loan.
The deadline day bid involves an option to sign the 22-year-old for £45million next summer, and is said to have been rejected by the Hornets.
Negotiations are described as ongoing with Watford holding out for a permanent sale or an initial loan fee amounting to £25m.

Senegal international Sarr cost the Championship side £30m last year but has only scored six goals at Vicarage Road, making his second appearance of the campaign in his side’s defeat to Reading on the weekend.
Liverpool were previously linked with the ex-Rennes star, before opting to sign Diogo Jota.
Should United fail to sign a wide attacker on deadline day, they could then go back to Sarr given the domestic deadline is not until October 16.
The Red Devils are also reportedly interested in a loan move for Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele.

Even though the Frenchman is unwanted at the Camp Nou, the LaLiga giants will only entertain permanent bids, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Fellow target Douglas Costa is one man definitely not heading to Old Trafford on Friday, after he completed a return to Bayern Munich.
Going into deadline day, Donny van de Beek was the only man to sign for the club this autumn.
But free agent Edinson Cavani and Porto left-back Alex Telles are expected to sign on the dotted line before the 11pm close of play.

Watch Harry Maguire ‘foul’ team-mate Luke Shaw to gift Tottenham star Ndombele opening goal at Man Utd

HARRY MAGUIRE set Tottenham on the way to a 6-1 win at Man Utd as he pulled back his own team-mate Luke Shaw to gift Tanguy Ndombele an equaliser for Spurs.
The Red Devils skipper made a horrible mess of dealing with the danger to allow the North Londoners an immediate way back into Sunday’s Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

Maguire and new centre-back partner Eric Bailly exchanged equally ill-advised headers on the edge of their own box after a Spurs throw had been deflected towards them.
Maguire then headed the ball back towards David De Gea – but his backpass was so under-hit it barely got past covering left-back Luke Shaw.
And as Shaw went to put his body between Erik Lamela and the ball, his captain bizarrely appeared to tug on his shoulder, pulling Shaw down and out of the way.
The ball broke for Tanguy Ndombele and despite Maguire’s despairing attempt at a block the ball ricocheted past De Gea to level the game up at 1-1.

Things went from bad to worse for Maguire just three minutes later when he fouled England colleague Harry Kane.
Kane sprung up and was allowed to take a quick free-kick with Maguire choosing to not cynically block the immediate pass and instead found himself out of position high up the pitch.
Kane threaded a ball neatly through the heart of United’s defence allowing Son Heung-min to make it 2-1 after just seven minutes with Maguire stranded in no man’s land.
After Kane got himself on the scoresheet, Serge Aurier nutmegged Maguire to assist Son’s second goal and make it 4-1 to Jose Mourinho’s jubilant Spurs.

United had been gifted a penalty barely 30 seconds in after Davinson Sanchez’s rash challenge on Anthony Martial allowed Bruno Fernandes to convert yet another spot-kick.
But Maguire’s initial howler sparked a dreadful first-half turnaround for United – which included Martial’s first red card in his club career for slapping Lamela.
The Red Devils conceded four goals in the first-half of a Prem clash for the first time ever.
And the onslaught continued after the break with Aurier burying a fifth goal.
Harry Kane then capped a man of the match performance by slamming home a penalty to hit United for six.

“We switched off. It really hurts.

“Manchester United shouldn’t lose in this manner. It really hurts, it’s embarrassing and we’ve let a lot of people down.
“We’ve let ourselves down and the staff down.
“We need to look in the mirror, we are nowhere near it at the moment. Maybe it’s lucky that we’ve got a break now.

Man Utd ratings: Maguire a shadow of former self, Pogba offers nothing and Martial petulant as they come

MANCHESTER UNITED were reduced to ten men and subsequently thumped by Tottenham in an Old Trafford shocker.
Anthony Martial was sent off for a slap on Erik Lamela – and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side them imploded to lose 6-1 to the side managed by their former boss Jose Mourinho.

Things had started so well for the Red Devils when Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot after just two minutes.
But it ended in horrible fashion, as two goals apiece from Heung-min Son and Harry Kane and strikes from Tanguy Ndombele and Serge Aurier turned it into a pasting.
Here, SunSport’s Paul Jiggins runs the rule of how United’s players fared – and it makes grim reading.

Could not be blamed this time – although at no stage did you fancy him to keep Spurs at bay.
    AARON WAN-BISSAKA – 3

    PAUL POGBA – 3

Man Utd verdict: Kane masterclass shows Red Devils exactly what they are missing with Martial sent off for Lamela slap

SOMETIMES the best things in life are staring you straight in the face.
And for Manchester United – who have spent months on an ’embarrassing’ £100million pursuit of Jadon Sancho – Harry Kane showed them exactly what they are missing.

    2

Harry Kane celebrates his first goal at Old TraffordCredit: EPA

    2

Kane and Son Heung-min (left) ran riot against Manchester UnitedCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd

The Tottenham striker delivered a man of the match performance and played a central role in a historically bad first-half rout of United along with partner in crime Son Heung-min.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side shipped four goals in the first 45 minutes for the first time EVER in the Premier League.
Incredibly, they had got off to the perfect start when Davinson Sanchez bundled over current centre-forward Anthony Martial with barely 30 seconds on the clock, allowing Bruno Fernandes to convert from the spot.
But then the nightmare truly began at the Theatre of Dreams with Harry Maguire the chief villain.

The skipper was at fault for no less than THREE of Spurs’ first-half strikes as Jose Mourinho’s side tore apart his old club.
    Maguire’s rap sheet was lengthy.
One count of friendly fire after hauling down Luke Shaw in the build-up to Spurs’ first goal, then he naively allowed Kane to assist Son with a quick free-kick, before seeing Serge Aurier set up the South Korean for another by nutmegging the £85m man.
So, with the window slamming shut at 11pm on Monday, what can 16th-placed United do to arrest their slide?

Left-back Alex Telles appears to be arriving from Porto – and could immediately replace Luke Shaw who somehow escaped a red after a horrible second-half hack on Lucas Moura – but it is the middle of the back four where the Red Devils are in dire need of reinforcements.
Surely the £100m earmarked for Sancho, would be far better spent bolstering the leaky, blunder-prone defence.
With Simon Jordan comparing Maguire’s speed to that of an ocean liner, pace is a priority in a potential defensive partner.
And who better than RB Leipzig’s 21-year-old defender Dayot Upamecano, a shining light in their run to the Champions League semi-finals last term, and open to a move next summer.

Alternatively, Ed Woodward should have taken United legend Wayne Rooney’s advice and written a blank cheque to persuade Daniel Levy to let United poach talisman Kane.
Everyone has a price and the England skipper has the tools required to finally fill the void at Old Trafford.
Instead, free agent Edinson Cavani is set to arrive, bringing bags of experience and proven goalscoring ability.
But the 33-year-old Uruguayan is a short-term solution, papering over the cracks.
Cavani will provide competition for Martial – who can hang his head in shame after a ludicrous slap on Erik Lamela ensured he took an early bath for the first time in his club career.
And with United hit for six and Kane the architect, it could not be clearer what they were lacking.

Mourinho interrupts Son interview to say Kane should have got Man of the Match vs Southampton despite Son scoring FOUR More
