Roy Keane hits out at Southgate for not consoling Harry Maguire after England red card and sympathises with Man Utd ace

ROY KEANE thinks Gareth Southgate should have consoled Harry Maguire after his disastrous red card in England’s 1-0 defeat by Denmark.
The Manchester United defender is badly out of form, and this continued in devastating fashion on Wednesday night when he was sent off after 31 minutes for two yellow cards.

And now Keane, who has been scathing of Maguire’s defending at times in the past, believes Southgate could have done more for his player in the situation.
Speaking to ITV the straight-talking Irishman said: “I think sometimes he [Gareth] knows Harry has had a tough time on and off the pitch, a pat on the back would have helped him.

“That would have settled him from Gareth.”
Keane is now worried how Maguire will bounce back from this latest setback with his club side.

The 49-year-old added: “The only down side is for Maguire, he’s going back to a team not full of confidence.
“I’ve been in situations before when I was in a situation with brilliant characters, I felt the dressing room was the best in the world. He’s not going to get that, in that back four.
“I wouldn’t be anywhere near those lads – I don’t see them as leaders.”
Maguire was booked for an early challenge on Yussuf Poulsen.

He was shown a second yellow by Spanish referee Jesus Gil Manzano after he brought down Kasper Dolberg trying to retrieve his own poor touch.

But Three Lions gaffer Southgate did back his under-fire centre-half speaking after the Nations League loss.
He told the BBC: “You learn who’s there for you in those difficult times. He’ll come through it, he’ll be a better player and a stronger man for it.
“To go down to 10 men is costly for the team, but we fully back him, we fully support him.
“He’s having a difficult period and in these periods you learn a lot about yourself.”
Christian Eriksen scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot after Kyle Walker fouled Thomas Delaney.

Man Utd’s Champions League showdown with PSG WILL go ahead despite France’s strict coronavirus curfew

THE mouth-watering Champions League clash between Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain WILL go ahead — despite a French coronavirus curfew.
France president Emmanuel Macron last night declared a four-week state of emergency — with a 9pm-6am curfew in nine cities, including Paris — starting on Sunday.

United begin their European campaign at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday and there were initial fears the game may have to be moved to POLAND.
But after contacting the French Football Federation, a Uefa spokesman said: “We have been told the curfew doesn’t apply to professional sporting events.”
The strict State of Emergency measure was applied to Paris, Lille, Rouen, Saint-Etienne, Toulouse, Lyon, Grenoble, Aix-en-Provence and Montpellier.

And the move will affect around 18million people.
All bars, restaurants, theatres and similar businesses will be forced to shut at 9pm sharp from Saturday – but a full national lockdown is not expected.
“We’re in a second wave,” Macron said in an interview on national television.
    “We have to react.”

On Wednesday France reported 22,591 new coronavirus cases, the third time in six days the daily tally has gone beyond the 20,000 threshold.

More than 32,000 people have now died from the bug in France.
SunSport also reported how United’s new signing Edinson Cavani could be in line for a sensational debut against his old club.
Cavani has had to self isolate for a fortnight since joining the Red Devils on transfer deadline day as a free agent.

That rules him out of this weekend’s trip to Newcastle but he will be allowed to make the trip back to Paris on Monday for Tuesday’s Champions League showdown.
Cavani, 33, has been training at home in Manchester to get up to speed and is likely to be on the bench in the Parc des Princes but with every chance of him coming on for an emotional late substitute appearance even without the fans.
The veteran Uruguayan striker scored 200 goals in 301 games for PSG between 2013 and this year but was let go in the summer when his contract ran out.

Man Utd trying to bulk up Donny van de Beek with strength programme – like Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo did

MANCHESTER UNITED plan to beef up new boy Donny van de Beek with a strength programme.
The Red Devils have been impressed by the former Ajax midfielder’s core fitness since he arrived in the summer.

However they would like to add a bit of muscle over the next few months so he is more prepared for the extra physicality of the Premier League.
This will mean putting on muscle in the right areas – so he can look forward to doing some heavy weights and resistance work such as pull-ups and chest presses..
The club have done similar with other new faces in recent years – including Bruno Fernandes earlier this year and, most famously, Cristiano Ronaldo early in his United career.

And Jesse Lingard put on 3lb of muscle over lockdown doing chest presses and pull-ups.

The Dutchman is regarded as one of the best trainers at the club and his ‘fantastic’ attitude has been likened to that of David Beckham when he was at Old Trafford.
Van de Beek, 23, has been on the bench in all three of United’s Premier League games so far – scoring on his debut against Crystal Palace.
He has started in both of their Carabao Cup matches and also for Holland in their defeat to Mexico earlier this month.
Meanwhile, defender Luke Shaw hopes the arrival of new signings Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles will provide United with a much-needed lift.

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hopes to have his squad back together on Thursday for the first time since their 6-1 humbling against Tottenham.
Cavani is currently quarantining and will not link up with his new team-mates until Monday.
But Shaw said: “We’ve got a few new arrivals in and that can maybe boost the morale of the squad and bring something different.
“Fresh faces are sometimes a good thing. Like we saw with Bruno, it can change completely the mood of a squad.”
Brazil international Telles has been brought in from Porto in a £15.4 million deal and will put pressure on Shaw for the left back spot.
But he said: “Competition for any team is a must. There is competition for every single spot and you’ve got to be ready for it, work hard and give the manager a decision.
“Like I said, competition is very healthy for the squad, it’ll push everyone – even more because everyone wants to play.”

Watch David De Gea make another mistake as Man Utd star mocked for ‘criminal positioning’ in shock Spain loss to Ukraine

DAVID DE GEA has been slammed on social media for ‘criminal positioning’ that led to Ukraine’s winner against Spain.
A delightful through-ball from West Ham star Andriy Yarmolenko was picked up by substitute Viktor Tsygankov to slam the ball home for a 1-0 win.

    6

David De Gea was slammed on Twitter for his positioning in conceding this goal against Ukraine

But it was Manchester United keeper De Gea who was heavily criticised for conceding.
He was caught half-way between coming out and staying on his line – and it didn’t go unnoticed by eagle-eyed footie fans.
Olly Lovel wrote that the Spaniard’s positioning was ‘criminal’, while Scott Rodgers asked why he ‘was so far out’.

Twitter user ‘Colm’ posted: “When that ball is played through he needs to either commit fully to going to the ball or get on his line, he did neither.

“It is literally a keeper’s job to make up for poor defending.”
Another joked that he was ‘hes trying to adapt to a sweeper keeper ffs’.
Eddie Glyn wrote: “Hendo will be licking his lips”, in a hint that De Gea could now lose his Manchester United No1 spot to understudy Dean Henderson.
‘What is he doing’, ‘should retire’ and ‘finished keeper’ were just some of the other comments aimed at the 29-year-old.

David De Gea had nowhere to hide as he conceded against Ukraine

De Gea didn’t exactly head to international duty in the best form – he conceded SIX as his United side were thumped 6-1 by Tottenham last time out.
But most of the goals could be blamed on the shocking defending in front of him as opposed to keeper errors.
De Gea came in for some stinging criticism last season from one United legend.
Roy Keane was left seething after the stopper allowed Steve Bergwijn’s effort to go straight through ‘the most overrated goalkeeper I’ve seen in a long, long time’.

“I am disgusted with it. Maguire? de Gea? Hang your heads in shame.””I’d be swinging punches at that guy.”Roy Keane is absolutely FURIOUS at that Tottenham goal…😳 pic.twitter.com/fC97LLKHcf
    — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) June 19, 2020

The no-nonsense Irishman said he was ‘sick to death of this goalkeeper’, that he would be ‘swinging punches at him’ at half-time, and told him to ‘get a taxi back to Manchester’.
United did manage to claw a goal back as the game finished 1-1, and De Gea almost redeemed himself with a world-class save from Heung-min Son.
But for Keane, the damage was done.
SunSport has compiled a list of the seven times De Gea has been left high and dry with errors – with more and more United fans now hoping boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gives Henderson his chance.

How Man Utd could replace Pogba with Eduardo Camavinga thanks to failed transfer talks over Ousmane Dembele

MANCHESTER UNITED could reportedly replace Paul Pogba with countryman Eduardo Camavinga.
Pogba’s deal expires next summer, but United do have the option to extend it for another season.

But according to Spanish newspaper AS, plans are being drawn up to prepare for the 27-year-old’s departure.
And Rennes starlet Camavinga has emerged as a potential long-term replacement.
United have ‘put in place the mechanism’ to sign Camavinga – and it started by already dealing with his agent.

Camavinga is managed by Mousa Sissoko, who also looks after Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele.

While United failed in their loan bid for Dembele on deadline day, it is being reported that ‘a foundation’ was laid to explore the possibility to sign Camavinga.
The 17-year-old’s current deal at Rennes expires in 2022.
Real Madrid were believed to be the frontrunners for the signature of Camavinga – but with a holding interest in Pogba, any move for the teen may be scrapped.
Juventus are also keen on a reunion with Pogba having bought and then sold him to United.

Football expert Fabrizio Romano claimed on a podcast that Pogba probably would have been a Juve player this summer had it not been for the coronavirus.
And Romano believes the pandemic, which is causing a cash crisis across the continent, made a summer bid for the France international ‘impossible’.
Last week Camavinga scored a stunning overhead kick in his first start for France.
It only took the 17-year-old prospect nine minutes to register as his country demolished Ukraine 7-1 in a friendly.
In a flash of quick thinking, the youngster readjusted his body and flicked the ball over his head in a brilliant overhead kick.
The Ukrainian defence were left stunned as Camavinga celebrated his moment of genius.

Man Utd ‘going nowhere’ after deadline panic buys, while Arsenal transfer business was unbelievable, claims Paul Merson

PAUL MERSON believes Manchester United are “going nowhere” after making the last-minute addition of Edinson Cavani.
The former Paris Saint-Germain striker, 33, signed as a free agent on deadline day to bolster the Red Devils’ attack.

While Cavani has bagged 250 goals in Serie A and Ligue 1 throughout a lethal career, there are fears he is a spent force.
And former Arsenal and England midfielder Merson, 52, does not think the Uruguayan will guide United to success.
He wrote in the Star: “Edinson Cavani is an underwhelming signing for Manchester United that shows they are going nowhere.

“He’s been available on a free transfer since I don’t know when, and I don’t think they got beaten by Tottenham because they can’t put the ball in the net.

“Having a man sent off in that game just gave them an excuse. They were already all over the shop defensively.
“It’s hard to play for a big club when you haven’t got any pace and their centre-backs have none.
“I thought they were a shoe-in for the top four before the season started but until they get some legs in that back four I don’t see where they are going.
“They have opened the door for teams like Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton to finish in the top four this season.

    3

Former Gunner Merson is happy with his old side’s transfer businessCredit: Getty – Contributor
“I don’t think they are a top four club at the moment. They can’t defend for toffee, and they let Chris Smalling go to Roma. He would probably get in the team right now.
“Cavani feels like a Quick Fix. But he’s probably not even that if I’m being honest. I don’t see him being the difference.”
United completed much of their transfer business on deadline day, adding Cavani, Alex Telles and Facundo Pellistri to earlier signing Donny van de Beek.
Atalanta winger Amad Diallo is set to arrive in January after the club missed out on Jadon Sancho.
Merson feels the Red Devils are heading in the opposite direction to Arsenal on the pitch.
The Gunners have attracted criticism, including from Merson, for their handling of Gunnersaurus mascot man Jerry Quy’s sacking.
But the £45million signing of Thomas Partey was praised by the ex-midfielder as a real coup.

Merson added: “I like where Arsenal are going on the pitch. Mikel Arteta is doing really well.
“And Partey is an unbelievable signing.
“I don’t know why Manchester United or even Manchester City didn’t go for him. He’s better than what they’ve got.
“But off the pitch, I don’t like what is happening at Arsenal at all sometimes. It’s not the club I remember.”

Man Utd star Marcus Rashford to line up for England vs Belgium in black boots adorned with 40 messages from school kids

MANCHESTER UNITED star Marcus Rashford will wear black boots adorned with 40 messages from school kids for England against Belgium tonight.
The 22-year-old – who was awarded an MBE for his inspirational campaign to secure free meals for disadvantaged children in the school holidays – has launched the ‘Marcus Rashford Boot Project’ in honour of Black History Month.

As part of his efforts to use his platform to give a voice to disadvantaged youngsters, the Three Lions ace will don a pair of special edition Nike Mercurial boots featuring handwritten messages.
The words are all responses given by school kids to the phrase ‘I am the future of…’ and will be first seen in the Nations League fixture against Fifa’s No1 ranked side at Wembley.
The 40 children have been selected from three schools where a large portion of kids receive free school meals, including Button Lane in Wythenshawe – Rashford’s own primary school.

The Manchester-born hero will also display messages written by youngsters from Passmores Academy in Harlow and Brunswick Community Primary School in Sheffield.

Rashford will wear the boots throughout October before donating pairs to charities aligned with his fight against child poverty, including FareShare and Trussell Trust.
The striker idolised Muhammad Ali in his youth and an inspirational quote from the late great boxer can be found on his laces.
It reads: “Recognise how every moment of our journey is an important part of the growth of our soul.”
The colour of the boots is also a nod to Rashford’s journey through the United academy – where youngsters are famously BANNED from wearing anything other than black boots.

The custom-made boots will not be available to buy.
Rashford said: “This project was an opportunity for me to give millions of children in the UK a platform to share their voice and inspire the next generation.
“If I hadn’t experienced what I experienced as a child, I couldn’t stand here today as a voice for change. There would be little power in the delivery of my message.
“I wanted to carry their voice with me, standing in Wembley Stadium with their messages written across my boots. I wanted to give them a moment to shine.

It is for his campaign to secure free meals for disadvantaged children in the school holidays.
England centre-back Eric Dier said: “We had a team meeting before training as we normally do.
“The manager gave a speech on everything that Marcus has done, congratulated him and we gave him a round of applause.
“For him to put everything into a cause that is so close to his heart, and for him to effect change in the way he has, he is a fantastic role model for not only kids — but us as players as well.

“What Marcus has done will show players that we can all have in effecting change in a positive way in a subjects that matter dearly to us.”

Southgate said: “It’s wonderful for him and the family,  but he didn’t start this project to get the recognition.
“He started it because it was something he was affected by and cared passionately about.
“For someone his age to make the difference he has is a phenomenal achievement.

“We have watched him grow up — I say that but he’s still only 22!
“You can only marvel at what he has achieved.”

Rashford revealed he will take his mum Melanie to meet the Queen.
The Manchester-born star told BBC Breakfast: “I know I’ve got to take my mum, she doesn’t give me a choice.
“Then I’ve got to pick between my brothers and sisters – wish me luck.”
Rashford took to social media to express his thoughts and future plans after being bestowed the honour for his work off the field.

He said: “I’m incredibly honoured and humbled.
“As a young black man from Wythenshawe, never did I think I would be accepting an MBE, never mind an MBE at the age of 22.
“This is a very special moment for myself and my family, but particularly my mum who is the real deserving recipient of the honour.
“The fight to protect our most vulnerable children is far from over.
“I would be doing my community, and the families I have met and spoken with, an injustice if I didn’t use this opportunity to respectfully urge the Prime Minister, who recommended me for this honour, to support our children during the October half-term with an extension of the voucher scheme, as the furlough scheme comes to an end and we face increased unemployment.
“Another sticking plaster, but one that will give the parents of millions of children in the UK just one less thing to worry about.
“Let’s stand together in saying that no children in the UK should be going to bed hungry.
“As I have said many times before, no matter your feeling or opinion, not having access to food is NEVER the child’s fault.”
