Man Utd boost with Icardi, Verratti and Kehrer major injury doubts for PSG ahead of Champions League opener

MANCHESTER UNITED are set to face a depleted Paris Saint-Germain side on Tuesday with Marco Verratti a doubt for the match.
A trip to France’s capital kicks off the Red Devils’ Champions League campaign, with Thilo Kehrer and Mauro Icardi set to miss out.

PSG have confirmed a thigh issue for Verratti picked up during the international break.
There are serious doubts over Icardi’s availability while he suffers from a knee problem.
And Thomas Tuchel has admitted that a hamstring injury is set to keep German defender Kehrer out for ‘a few weeks’.

The PSG coach was left bemoaning an injury crisis ahead of Friday’s match with Nimes.

However, Les Parisiens dispatched their opponents with a 4-0 win, thanks to a brace from Kylian Mbappe.
Marquinhos and Julian Draxler missed the trip south and may return to face United.
Likewise, new signing Danilo was absent due to being in close contact with Cristiano Ronaldo before he was diagnosed coronavirus.
The midfielder is expected to start training on Sunday.

Ander Herrera is also cleared to play after testing positive for the virus.
Former Everton flop Moise Kean started the victory over Nimes while Neymar was rested.
And Tuchel has confirmed that the Brazil star will return for the Group H opener.

He stated: “Ney doesn’t have any issue. We talked together, like I did with Kylian.
“We had an honest discussion and I decided to let him rest today.
“He will be with us tomorrow. He will train and get ready for the game against Manchester United. He will be on the pitch, for sure.”

Man Utd icon Diego Forlan calls Edinson Cavani a ‘top signing’ and backs compatriot to become ‘new Zlatan Ibrahimovic’

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Diego Forlan believes Edinson Cavani can become the ‘new Zlatan Ibrahimovic’ at the club.
The Uruguayan has joined the Red Devils on a free transfer after he left Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

Although now 33-years-old, Cavani has enjoyed a goal-laden career with 341 league goals in 556 games.
And Forlan, who became a United cult hero despite only being at the club between 2002 and 2004, believes the signing will work out well.
And the 41-year-old expects Cavani to have a similar impact at Old Trafford to that of Ibrahimovic.

The Swede signed for United on a one-year deal in 2016 which was then extended for a second season before leaving to join LA Galaxy in March, 2018.

Ibra, now playing for AC Milan at the age of 39, netted 29 times in all competitions for the Premier League giants.
Speaking to the South China Morning Post, Forlan said: “Edinson is still a great player. I’ve not seen any decline in him yet. I think he’s a top signing for United, just like Zlatan was.
“He’s that type of player. He’ll lead by example, by how he trains and how he plays. He’ll be a positive influence for the young players.
“He’s a winner who has won lots of trophies, a goalscorer who has scored wherever he has been, he assists too.

“He’s strong and his physique will be fine for English football. He’s quick, he’s highly motivated.”
Cavani will have to wait a little longer before he can make his Red Devils debut.
The striker, believed to be earning around £200,000-a-week has had to self isolate for two weeks following his move to England.
This has ruled him out of this weekend’s showdown against Newcastle.
The 116-cap Uruguay international is in line to make his United debut against his old club PSG.
United face the French giants in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The striker will be available as he will be out of self-isolation by then.
It is likely that he will start on the bench, but he could make a late appearance.

Man Utd stars ‘growing frustrated at basic training which lacks creativity under insecure Solskjaer’ as pressure mounts

MANCHESTER UNITED players are beginning to question Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s training methods, according to reports.
The Red Devils are about to head into a crunch week of fixtures, facing Newcastle, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.

Selection issues are prominent as they head to Tyneside, given Anthony Martial’s suspension.
Goals have not been too hard to come by but only Marcus Rashford and Donny van de Beek have scored from open play in the league.
Meanwhile, the defence is also central to a huge debate amid Harry Maguire’s poor form.

Solskjaer’s ability to turn the slump around, and quickly, could be a deciding factor in his Old Trafford future.

Murmurings over Mauricio Pochettino will not go away without a decisive turnaround in form.
And, according to The Independent, players are questioning whether Solskjaer is the elite-level manager clubs like United crave.
A source in the report describes sessions as “basic” and “lacking in creativity”.
There is still a lot of positivity and warmth around the squad for the Norwegian, it is said, with anger currently held back in favour of disappointment.

Yet that could change and, while Jose Mourinho was reportedly disliked but acknowledged as an expert, Solskjaer is seen the other way around.
United kick off at St James’ Park on Saturday night knowing this squad will not change for at least the next two and a half months.
The transfer window has provided Alex Telles, Facundo Pellistri, van de Beek and Edinson Cavani to improve the side – although the latter is missing this weekend.

Ahead of the game, Solskjaer stated: “We need a response as we always do after we lose a game you want to win the next one we want to try and dominate the game.
“The result is very important, but we want to see positive body language and mindset.
“You don’t get anywhere being negative, so we’re going to go out there go for the win and see which players want to work for the points.” More

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer backs Bruno Fernandes amid Man Utd bust-up rumours and says ‘he’s not used to losing’

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER says Bruno Fernandes knows now what it means to be a Manchester United player after a fortnight of criticism and stories of bust-ups.
The Manchester United boss pointed out that his Portuguese play-maker had lost only two league games since his arrival at the end of January.

But as ever with the Red Devils, two defeats equals a crisis and with Fernandes subbed at half-time in the 6-1 defeat against Spurs, there has been extra scrutiny on him.
Solskjaer said: “Bruno has lost two league games since he came.
“It’s been two in quick succession and he’s not used to losing league games but welcome to Manchester United, this is what happens.

“They are going to  try and create a division between us but it’s not going to happen, this is a group that wants to work together and stick together.”

While it is not clear who ‘they’ are, there has understandably been criticism of the team given their awful start to the league season.
It has seen two defeats from three and 11 goals conceded, ending with the humiliation at the hands of Spurs.
Solskjaer said: “We know we’ve started the season badly and that game ended really badly.
“We started well and after the sending off with ten men we couldn’t hold on or get a result.

“When we got the 3-1 just after the sending off, the extra hope went and we know we have to perform better.
“But we’ve now had two weeks to think about it, work on it, with the others who were here, while the ones on internationals had positive and negative experiences.
“We’ve been in touch with the ones that have been away and it’s one of those things you have to get over as soon as you can, we know any little chance from outside people want to create division.
“Bruno spoke well the other day. We are united and have to stay together, we can’t listen to everyone outside, we have got to get on with it.”
United travel to Newcastle on Saturday evening amid calls captain Harry Maguire to be given a day off amid his worrying run of form.
There were fears that Fernandes would have to miss the next four games after Portugal team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo tested positive for Covid.
However, it is not believed the current United star had close contact with the Old Trafford legend and has been given the green light to play.

Man Utd captain Harry Maguire ‘pleads with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to keep him in the team’ amid horror run of form

HARRY MAGUIRE has reportedly pleaded with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to ignore his nightmare patch and keep him in the Manchester United team.
Calls to drop the club captain have grown over the international break, as he added to his poor string of performances with a red card for England.

United travel to Newcastle on Saturday before a difficult Champions League opener against Paris Saint-Germain.
And Maguire hopes to brush off the criticism and continue in the Red Devils’ team.
According to the Mail, Maguire, 27, is remaining level-headed over his recent run, admitting that he has been far from his best.

Yet the player is said to prefer getting his head down and playing himself into form, rather than taking a break from the game.

The decision over the centre-back’s immediate future will be left to boss Solskjaer, who hardly has a wealth of backups to call upon if Maguire is dropped.
Eric Bailly also played badly in the 6-1 defeat to Tottenham while Victor Lindelof has failed to fully convince his manager.
Axel Tuanzebe is thought to be liked by Solskjaer but he will not be fit for a first-team return for a couple of weeks, with Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo exiled from the side.
There are fears over Maguire’s state of mind and body after a strenuous end to last season, for which he was handed only a two-week break.

In that time, the England star was arrested on the Greek island of Mykonos, on a charge he denies with a retrial due next year.
Solskjaer, 47, made Maguire club captain in January and steadfastly refused to rest him during last season’s busy run-in.
After June’s restart, he played every minute of United’s 14 games across just over eight weeks, with two ties going to extra time.
Bruno Fernandes was another player heavily relied upon by the manager, also leading to burnout worries for the Portuguese playmaker.
Maguire’s form has led to Red Devils legend Rio Ferdinand calling on his old team-mate to rest the centre-back.

Ferdinand, 41, said: “It’s obvious to see he’s going through a bad spell.
“Nobody is immune from having a downturn in form and confidence. If you want to play well, then having that confidence is an absolute necessity.
“He’s lacking that and it’s very evident in his performances. In these situations – and I’ve been in them as well – you sometimes need to be taken out of the oven.”

Roy Keane hits out at Southgate for not consoling Harry Maguire after England red card and sympathises with Man Utd ace

ROY KEANE thinks Gareth Southgate should have consoled Harry Maguire after his disastrous red card in England’s 1-0 defeat by Denmark.
The Manchester United defender is badly out of form, and this continued in devastating fashion on Wednesday night when he was sent off after 31 minutes for two yellow cards.

And now Keane, who has been scathing of Maguire’s defending at times in the past, believes Southgate could have done more for his player in the situation.
Speaking to ITV the straight-talking Irishman said: “I think sometimes he [Gareth] knows Harry has had a tough time on and off the pitch, a pat on the back would have helped him.

“That would have settled him from Gareth.”
Keane is now worried how Maguire will bounce back from this latest setback with his club side.

The 49-year-old added: “The only down side is for Maguire, he’s going back to a team not full of confidence.
“I’ve been in situations before when I was in a situation with brilliant characters, I felt the dressing room was the best in the world. He’s not going to get that, in that back four.
“I wouldn’t be anywhere near those lads – I don’t see them as leaders.”
Maguire was booked for an early challenge on Yussuf Poulsen.

He was shown a second yellow by Spanish referee Jesus Gil Manzano after he brought down Kasper Dolberg trying to retrieve his own poor touch.

But Three Lions gaffer Southgate did back his under-fire centre-half speaking after the Nations League loss.
He told the BBC: “You learn who’s there for you in those difficult times. He’ll come through it, he’ll be a better player and a stronger man for it.
“To go down to 10 men is costly for the team, but we fully back him, we fully support him.
“He’s having a difficult period and in these periods you learn a lot about yourself.”

Man Utd’s Champions League showdown with PSG WILL go ahead despite France’s strict coronavirus curfew

THE mouth-watering Champions League clash between Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain WILL go ahead — despite a French coronavirus curfew.
France president Emmanuel Macron last night declared a four-week state of emergency — with a 9pm-6am curfew in nine cities, including Paris — starting on Sunday.

United begin their European campaign at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday and there were initial fears the game may have to be moved to POLAND.
But after contacting the French Football Federation, a Uefa spokesman said: “We have been told the curfew doesn’t apply to professional sporting events.”
The strict State of Emergency measure was applied to Paris, Lille, Rouen, Saint-Etienne, Toulouse, Lyon, Grenoble, Aix-en-Provence and Montpellier.

And the move will affect around 18million people.
All bars, restaurants, theatres and similar businesses will be forced to shut at 9pm sharp from Saturday – but a full national lockdown is not expected.
“We’re in a second wave,” Macron said in an interview on national television.
    “We have to react.”

On Wednesday France reported 22,591 new coronavirus cases, the third time in six days the daily tally has gone beyond the 20,000 threshold.

More than 32,000 people have now died from the bug in France.
SunSport also reported how United’s new signing Edinson Cavani could be in line for a sensational debut against his old club.
Cavani has had to self isolate for a fortnight since joining the Red Devils on transfer deadline day as a free agent.

That rules him out of this weekend’s trip to Newcastle but he will be allowed to make the trip back to Paris on Monday for Tuesday’s Champions League showdown.
Cavani, 33, has been training at home in Manchester to get up to speed and is likely to be on the bench in the Parc des Princes but with every chance of him coming on for an emotional late substitute appearance even without the fans.
The veteran Uruguayan striker scored 200 goals in 301 games for PSG between 2013 and this year but was let go in the summer when his contract ran out.

Man Utd trying to bulk up Donny van de Beek with strength programme – like Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo did

MANCHESTER UNITED plan to beef up new boy Donny van de Beek with a strength programme.
The Red Devils have been impressed by the former Ajax midfielder’s core fitness since he arrived in the summer.

However they would like to add a bit of muscle over the next few months so he is more prepared for the extra physicality of the Premier League.
This will mean putting on muscle in the right areas – so he can look forward to doing some heavy weights and resistance work such as pull-ups and chest presses..
The club have done similar with other new faces in recent years – including Bruno Fernandes earlier this year and, most famously, Cristiano Ronaldo early in his United career.

And Jesse Lingard put on 3lb of muscle over lockdown doing chest presses and pull-ups.

The Dutchman is regarded as one of the best trainers at the club and his ‘fantastic’ attitude has been likened to that of David Beckham when he was at Old Trafford.
Van de Beek, 23, has been on the bench in all three of United’s Premier League games so far – scoring on his debut against Crystal Palace.
He has started in both of their Carabao Cup matches and also for Holland in their defeat to Mexico earlier this month.
Meanwhile, defender Luke Shaw hopes the arrival of new signings Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles will provide United with a much-needed lift.

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hopes to have his squad back together on Thursday for the first time since their 6-1 humbling against Tottenham.
Cavani is currently quarantining and will not link up with his new team-mates until Monday.
But Shaw said: “We’ve got a few new arrivals in and that can maybe boost the morale of the squad and bring something different.
“Fresh faces are sometimes a good thing. Like we saw with Bruno, it can change completely the mood of a squad.”
Brazil international Telles has been brought in from Porto in a £15.4 million deal and will put pressure on Shaw for the left back spot.
But he said: “Competition for any team is a must. There is competition for every single spot and you’ve got to be ready for it, work hard and give the manager a decision.
“Like I said, competition is very healthy for the squad, it’ll push everyone – even more because everyone wants to play.”
