But United had heroes all over the pitch in a far cry from the 6-1 home collapse to Tottenham a couple of weeks ago.

Repaid the manager’s faith in him by making stunning stops to deny Kurzawa and then Mbappe.
Had no chance with the own goal though.

Watch Bruno Fernandes MISS second Man Utd penalty in a row… before being saved by VAR and nailing retake

MANCHESTER UNITED star Bruno Fernandes MISSED his second-straight penalty – but was given a reprieve.
The captain for the night against Paris Saint-Germain stepped up to the spot after Anthony Martial had been fouled in the area.

    — Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) October 20, 2020

Fernandes missed a penalty against Newcastle at the weekend, his first failure since October 2018.
Noticeably, he changed his usual hop-skip-jump routine.
And it seemed that bad luck was continuing as PSG keeper Keylor Navas dived low to left to save.

The hop-skip-jump was back, but it didn’t work.

However, the officials judged Navas to have come too far off his line and ordered the re-take.
And this time, with the same routine, Fernandes made no mistake as he rolled it into the same corner he had earlier been thwarted in.
Fernandes congratulated Newcastle keeper Karl Darlow after he became the first Premier League goalkeeper to save one of his penalties at the weekend.
The midfielder had scored from the spot ten times in a row since he joined Manchester United in January.

But his 100 per cent record ended during Saturday night’s showdown with Newcastle.
With the score locked at 1-1, United were awarded a penalty when Jamal Lewis fouled Marcus Rashford.
Fernandes stepped up to the spot, but his well-hit effort was parried away by Darlow.
According to Utdreport, the 26-year-old said: “Congratulations to him.
“He is the first goalkeeper in the Premier League to save a penalty from me.”

Man Utd announce 25-man Premier League squad with Sergio Romero and Phil Jones both AXED with future in doubt

MANCHESTER UNITED have submitted their 25-man Premier League squad – and it’s bad news for Phil Jones and Sergio Romero.
Both players were linked with moves away from Old Trafford this summer.

    5

And unsurprisingly they have not made the cut.
However, Marcos Rojo – who is back at United following his loan spell with Estudiantes – is included in the squad.
Rojo has not played for United since November 2019.

Romero appears to have fallen to FOURTH choice at the club, with Dean Henderson No2 and veteran Lee Grant No3.

Jones, meanwhile, hasn’t even made a squad this season despite United’s troubles at the back.
Deadline-day signings Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani are also in, as is Facundo Pellestri, who doesn’t count towards the main list as he is under 21.
Jones has not played a single minute so far, and made just two Premier League appearances last year.
SunSport understands the ex-Blackburn youngster could leave in January, with United demanding £20m for him.

A number of Premier League clubs have shown interest in him in the past, and Fulham looked at him this summer.

United only extended his contract last year until 2023 – keeping him on a deal worth nearly £100,000-a-week before bonuses.
But Solskjaer has no plans at present to use Jones much this campaign, with just fleeting appearances in the FA and EFL Cup planned.
The Red Devils centre-back has struggled to stay fit in recent seasons, with a recurring hamstring problem.

Solskjaer insists Greenwood has not been left home for disciplinary reasons as striker misses Man Utd’s clash with PSG

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER has denied that Mason Greenwood was left at home when Manchester United travelled to Paris because of disciplinary issues.
Rumours circulated over the weekend regarding the reason for his omission from the squad that faced Newcastle on Saturday.

While he has been training, Greenwood did not travel with the team for the Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain.
Solskjaer gave a flat ‘no’ when the notion of a disciplinary issue was put to him.
But he would not say what injury the striker was suffering from to keep him out the squad.
Solskjaer said: “I can’t declare medical stuff, can I?

“We hope it’s just a niggle and we don’t want to take any chances with him, and hopefully at the weekend it’ll be fine again.”
It is not clear when and how he got this ‘niggle’ given that he did not go away on international duty with England, having been expelled from the camp for disciplinary reasons following his debut against Iceland.

The 19-year-old has been hailed by Solskjaer as the best finisher in the club but has had to be reminded of his responsibilities as a United player following that incident.
After the match in Reykjavik, Greenwood and Manchester City’s Phil Foden met up with two girls at the team hotel and were subsequently kicked out the squad.

Greenwood has struggled with his form since that moment and scored just once, in a Carabao Cup game away to Luton.

Watch Man Utd teen starlet Puigmal score stunning free-kick at Arsenal in thrilling Under-23 draw

MANCHESTER UNITED youngster Arnau Puigmal starred with a superb free-kick in a draw with Arsenal’s Under-23s side.
Saturday’s match-up of the Premier League reserves finished 3-3 with Spanish midfielder Puigmal grabbing a brace.

Click right on the Instagram image below to watch…

One of the moments of the match at Boreham Wood’s Meadow Park came when Puigmal lined up a free-kick from 20 yards out.
The 19-year-old sweetly hit the ball to the near-post, curling inwards to beat the diving goalkeeper.
And he was naturally pleased with his first United goal of the campaign, uploading the clip to his Instagram alongside a picture of his celebration.

Puigmal scored in the third minute and again after the break, mopping up the rebound after missing a penalty.
A 3-1 lead was established when Joe Hugill, a summer signing from Sunderland, netted.
But Arsenal, who had Reiss Nelson and William Saliba among their U23s, worked their way back into the game thanks to goals from the winger and Folarin Balogun.
Puigmal was tipped for a loan spell away from Old Trafford for the new campaign but stayed in Manchester to continue his progression.

Barcelona rivalled United for the right-sided midfielder when he signed from Espanyol in 2017.

Much of his game time has been with the U18s with this season earmarked for a regular spot in the reserve side.
Under-23s coach Neil Wood praised the direct-minded Puigmal earlier in the year as the club look to continue their production line of young talent.
He said in August: “He likes to run forward and attack and scored some goals for himself.
“With the vision, creativity and range of passes, plus the accuracy, that those lads can play, it was a vital component of the team.”

Man Utd delete tweet over ‘climbing 14 flights of steps’ at Newcastle after Gary Neville slams post and fans rage at PPV

MANCHESTER UNITED fans hammered their social media team after a tone deaf tweet made light of the game with Newcastle being played in an empty stadium
Not only are supporters not allowed to enter St James’ Park on Saturday, viewers in the United Kingdom must fork out £14.95 to watch the match.

The 8pm kick-off is United’s first behind the new Box Office paywall set up by the Premier League last week.
Ahead of the clash, the Red Devils’ Twitter account embarrassingly joked that fans will be pleased to avoid the trip to Tyneside.
St James’ Park is known for demanding a long climb to the upper tier of the Milburn Stand and Leazes End.

Yet United fans were quick to reply that they would love to be making the climb after several months away from stadiums.

The tweet read: “At least there’s no climbing up 14 flights of stairs to get to the away end at St James’ Park for this one…
“Where are you watching #NEWMUN from?”
A laughing face emoji accompanied a world map with the kick-off times for fans worldwide, including Baghdad, Los Angeles and Manchester.
The social media team promptly deleted the tweet.

Gary Neville led supporters in making clear their anger at the joke.
The former defender wrote: “How bad is this tweet?”
United fan Ryan tweeted: “I’d rather walk up those 14 flights of stairs 50 times than pay £15 to watch it at home to be fair.”
Jack replied: “Nowhere because I’m not paying £15 straight to the Glazers pockets. I’ll watch the highlights 45 minutes after the final whistle on MOTD.”

Matty wrote online: “English fans are desperate to get into grounds. Clubs are desperate for match day money to survive. United social media team are laughing about it and telling us the kick off time in Kuala Lumpur. How out of touch can you get?”
Robert added: “Most people in the UK will not be watching because the club and the TV companies are using the pandemic as an excuse to justify charging UK fans an extra £14.95 to see the game. You should be ashamed.”
While Twitter user John commented: “How out of touch! Fans would kill to be walking up those stairs and watching a game live rather than paying £15 to watch on TV! What a poor tweet. I hate my own football club.”

Solskjaer’s suitability as Man Utd boss will be looked at if they lose to Newcastle with Pochettino and Allegri lined up

MANCHESTER UNITED travel to Newcastle in what is the first of seven games that will make or break United’s season – and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s managerial future.
Following a poor start to the campaign, two league defeats from three, speculation has intensified over the international break about Solskjaer’s long-term suitability for the role.

    3

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in the firing line at UnitedCredit: PA:Press Association

And, once again, we’ve seen former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino heavily linked with replacing him.
Then there is well-respected Italian Max Allegri who is out of work and seemingly looking for a way back in.
The game in the North-East is followed by crunch games against Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, RB Leipzig, Arsenal, Istanbul BaSakSehir and Everton before another pause for the international fixtures.
    Can Solskjaer afford another defeat?
United have conceded 11 league goals in three league games, their highest figure at this stage of a season for 90 years.

It’s very much ‘one game at a time’ for Solskjaer, but a defeat against Steve Bruce’s side would mean they’ve lost three of their opening four league games for the first time since 1986.
That said, United have won five successive Premier League away matches, scoring at least twice in each victory.
They have never earned six top-flight away victories in a row, not even under Sir Alex Ferguson. So, which record will it be?
Many of the players that have been on international duty have come out in support of Solskjaer.

But another showing like the 6-1 home defeat to Spurs, and the Norwegian may find that his position is untenable.
    What Solskjaer needs to do?
Captain Harry Maguire needs taking out of the firing line and resting.
The former Leicester City man looks like he needs a mental break having followed a poor start to the season with his club, with an equally worrying performance and a red card for England in midweek.

    3

Mauricio Pochettino could finally get the chance to shine at Old TraffordCredit: Reuters

Paul Pogba is another that’s under-performing and should be left out, especially when you’ve got someone as good as Donny van de Beek waiting in the wings to step in.
New number seven Edinson Cavani is unable to play this weekend, but his arrival should force Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood to find their best form and get back on the goalscoring trail.
Anthony Martial we know is suspended after his red card against Spurs.
    Verdict
Newcastle have won two of their past three Premier League home games against Manchester United and if they make it a third, then the United board might have a decision to make.
It might not mean it was the end for Solskjaer, but it would certainly feel like the beginning of the end.
Regardless of the result against Newcastle, it feels like a hurdle too far for Solskjaer, especially with Pochettino out of work and being linked with the club on a daily basis.
Solskajer has performed a miracle before, and there isn’t a United fan in the world who doesn’t want him to succeed.
Sometimes though, you have to hold your hands up and admit that you just aren’t good enough.

Man Utd ‘could turn to Massimiliano Allegri’ if they fail to tempt Mauricio Pochettino to replace under-fire Solskjaer

MANCHESTER UNITED have reportedly added Massimiliano Allegri to their shortlist to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Mauricio Pochettino is another name linked to the Old Trafford dugout, should the club make a change.

Solskjaer, 47, is under mounting pressure after United’s poor start to the campaign.
Losses to Crystal Palace and Tottenham have heightened doubts over the Norwegian’s ability to push his team to the next level.
All that could change with convincing performances against Newcastle, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea this week.

But reports have emerged highlighting discontent around the club, pushing the board to consider ex-Tottenham boss Pochettino, 48.

And The Transfer Window podcast claim that Allegri, 53, could end his sabbatical to manage United.
However, it is said that Pochettino is ahead of the former Juventus coach as the Red Devils’ first-choice candidate.
Allegri led AC Milan to their most recent Scudetto in 2011 before a hugely successful spell with Juventus, winning Serie A five times and reaching the Champions League final.
Since leaving last year, the Italian has been linked with Roma, Juventus, Barcelona, Lazio, Arsenal, Newcastle and Paris Saint-Germain – among others.

And, when asked about the Roma rumours on TV channel Rai earlier this month, he opened the door to a return to management.
Allegri remarked: “We’ll see, who knows. I’m just tired of not doing anything.”
Ahead of the trip to Newcastle on Saturday evening, Solskjaer called on his side to face up to the pressure.
He told reporters: “The spotlight should be on me, because I’m the manager and I’m responsible.

You have to be mentally strong. For me, this period is another chance to prove that.
    Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

“Last season was also hard, we played nine games and only won first of the two nine games, which was difficult.
“But if you’re part of Manchester United as a player or staff, you’re used to this and you have to be mentally strong. For me, this period is another chance to prove that.
“It’s about being focused for the next game, because I know they’re capable of getting results and moving up the table.”
