Man Utd boss Solskjaer must trust Van de Beek in Premier League soon as £40m star is creative spark vs Basaksehir

WHAT MORE does Donny van de Beek have to do to be trusted in the Premier League?
Since his £40m summer arrival at Manchester United from Ajax, the Dutchman has started three out of four Champions League group games, including the stroll past Istanbul Basaksehir.

Donny van de Beek has done enough to warrant a regular starting spot at UnitedCredit: Getty Images – Getty

It was a performance full of forward-thinking efficiency, consistency and creativity from the heart of a United midfield that has been lacking in those departments.
Yet he has started none of United’s eight league games so far, playing just 88 minutes. And when he has, it has been alongside four different midfield partners.
It must be a bizarre feeling to be depended on against last year’s semi-finalists Red Bull Leipzig in Europe’s elite competition, but limited to just 11 minutes at home to West Brom.

And after yet another impressive Euro display, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must be running out of excuses.
One of his excuses, the enigma that is Paul Pogba, was taken out of the United boss’ hands last night after revealing the Frenchman remains troubled with injuries.
“His ankle has swollen up,” said Solskjaer. “He trained yesterday but it didn’t feel right. This morning it was just confirmation he couldn’t play.”
A blessing in disguise for Van de Beek perhaps, who continues to show – in Europe at least – what an asset he can be for United when used correctly.

One of the issues facing Van de Beek is Bruno Fernandes, who scored twice in a driven performance. The comparisons are constant, but unnecessary.

Van de Beek is just not that sort of player, and ironically, showed just how helpful he can be to Fernandes when deployed as a holding No.6 against Istanbul.
Former Dutch international Rafael Van der Vaart half-jokingly suggested earlier this month that his compatriot is the only United player who can ‘kick a marble’.
He arguably has a point; last night’s passing display and control over the game was full of exactly what United’s front line have been crying out for – forward-thinking passes.
Nothing fancy or spectacular, but brave, accurate, and almost always into the feet of United’s most dangerous player in Fernandes.
That exact combination ended with Marcus Rashford having a well-worked goal ruled out for offside, while a round-the-corner pass in his own half sparked the attack for Fernandes’ second.

Van de Beek has staked his claim for a place in Solskjaer’s starting XICredit: EPA
United legends Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes saw it too.
“He is a breath of fresh air,” admitted Rio. “He is getting the ball and transitioning it to attacking areas well. A big difference to what we have seen in the last few weeks.”
Scholes agreed: “His link-up play with Bruno was very clever.”
In fairness to Ole, there still remain doubts over Van de Beek out of possession.
But with the ball, it is hard to find a player in this current United squad that can manipulate the ball, spark attacks and keep it ticking better than Donny.
And with Pogba a doubt for the weekend trip to Southampton, all eyes will be on Ole’s team sheet.
Another place on the bench for Donny in the league, and he may just lose his marbles. More

The Red Devils legend was fuming ‘one of the reserve players’ had nicked the charger he was using in the Carrington dressing room.
But Morrison has now taken to Twitter to set the record straight and claimed it was ‘all Rio’s fault’.
He said he gave his phone to the former centre-back to charge while he was playing in an Under-18s game.
He wrote: “@rioferdy5 Put my phone on charge for me, i had a U18s game on the way out I Gave him my phone.. 90 minutes later.. phone smashed to tiny pieces.

Rooney, who ended up the club’s all-time goal scorer with 253 goals, admits he damaged the mobile before realising it belonged to academy kid Morrison and not one of his successful United first team pals.
Rooney told the Utd Podcast: “I remember I smashed his phone up at one point.

“He came in the first team dressing room when he was in the reserves. My phone was on charge and he took it off and put his on.
“It was when we had the old BlackBerries and it had the email address on the front.
“I thought it was one of the other lads so when I saw it was one of the reserve players I just smashed the phone up!”

Rooney cited Morrison, now 27 and at Dutch club ADO Den Haag, as the biggest disappointment not to make the grade at Old Trafford.
He added: “With the younger players it’s been well documented about Ravel Morrison.
“He was brilliant in training and then he had a few issues and it halted his career.
“We all thought he was going to be top level. Everyone could see those issues were going to be there. I spoke to him.
“Gary Neville was trying to get him to live with him. There were different things people tried.”
Rooney also revealed he nearly left Old Trafford for Chelsea and that there was strong interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona but a move to rivals Manchester City was never close to going through.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claims Man Utd home form suffering this season because of empty Old Trafford and no ‘X Factor’ fans

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER insists Manchester United’s home form is suffering because of an empty stadium.
They have not won any of their last six Premier League games at Old Trafford, losing three and drawing one this season as they prepare for the visit of West Brom.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must turn around Manchester United’s home form to push the side up the tableCredit: AFP or Licensors

And United boss Solskjaer said: “We’ve had four home games in the league. The first one we didn’t have any preparation and Palace deserved it.
“Then Anthony Martial did not deserve to be sent off against Tottenham but, after he was, they deserved the win.
“Then both the Chelsea and Arsenal games were very tight and if we had our fans might they might have sparked that little extra X Factor we needed.

“It’s a different sensation playing in front of the Stretford End without fans, they usually score a goal for us.
“It’s something we want to correct and hopefully we’ll get our first win against West Brom.”
Covid-19 restrictions have barred fans from stadiums in the top flight but there are moves to allow some back soon as long as they are socially distanced.
United believe they have everything in place to make that happen.

Solskjaer said: “It’s welcome news for the players and the club but the biggest plus is for fans to come and watch games again.

“Watching on TV is not the same as getting close contact with players you admire and adore, you’re a fan of a club for a reason, hopefully we can get back to that but it’s up to government and society get the rate down in general because it’s an issue.”
Solskjaer will be without Luke Shaw for the game against the Baggies after he suffered a hamstring injury last time out, and Mason Greenwood will again be missing as he recovers from illness.
But in assessing Greenwood’s form this season, Solskjaer says people need to take a longer look at just how far he has come in a short space of time.
He said: “You have to take a step back sometimes, the boy’s only 19, he’s had a fantastic year.

“If we go back a year I left him out of the Carabao Cup against Chelsea, so he could play against Doncaster in Checkatrade Trophy to get some game time, that’s how far he’s come.
“He has now scored 19 goals for the first team made his England debut and scored in first Under 21 game.
“Everyone’s allowed to not be well, he’s been away eight or nine days from training and we are building him up again. I have no doubts about him.
“He has a very good head on him and the talent is there for all to see.”

West Ham join Man Utd in shock Sami Khedira transfer race after Juventus star revealed ‘dream’ of Premier League move

Juventus did not name Khedira, 33, in their Champions League squad and he is yet to play this season.
Talks are reportedly underway over terminating his contract, with no agreement reached yet.
Manchester United and Tottenham have been linked with a move for Khedira.

According to Sportmediaset, via TeamTalk, West Ham are also tracking the German.
Khedira has played only once in 2020 while suffering from knee and hamstring issues.
A World Cup winner in 2014, the midfielder has racked up seven league titles in three countries along with a Champions League.
And he spoke recently of his desire to one day reach the Premier League.

Khedira told Sky Germany: “When I was a child it was always a big dream of mine to be a Premier League player.

“I am really happy and satisfied with my career until now but one thing is still missing because I always had this dream and it has never come true… to be a part of the Premier League.
“I have watched so many Premier League games since I was young [but] even now I am following the Premier League a lot.
“I enjoyed always to play with my teams to play in the Champions League against the English clubs. The atmosphere, the style and idea of football has always impressed me.
“If it is possible it will for sure be a really big dream [come true] and honour to be a part of the Premier League.”

Man Utd star Victor Lindelof struggling with back injury after asking to be subbed against France, confirms Sweden coach

MANCHESTER UNITED defender Victor Lindelof is struggling with a recurring back injury and asked to go off in Sweden’s 4-2 loss in France on Tuesday night.
The centre-back lasted 66 minutes of the Nations League tie, having also been substituted in United’s 2-1 Champions League defeat at Istanbul Basaksehir on November 4.

And it means the chances of Alex Telles making his United debut in the Premier League at home to West Brom this Saturday are soaring.
Aftonbladet quote Sweden assistant manager Peter Wettergren as confirming: “Lindelof was in a bit of pain after the match against Croatia, but said that he will give everything for the team.

“He was able to train okay and said ‘I’ll push as long as possible’.

“He gave me a signal at half time that he would not go the whole [of the second] half.
“Then I told him to shout when it is not possible.”
Lindelof did play all of United’s last game, a 3-1 Prem win at Everton on November 7.

But boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will surely tread carefully after the 26-year-old’s latest problem.
And Brazil left-back Telles is itching to finally play for United after his summer arrival from Porto.
The 27-year-old has missed two weeks after testing positive for Covid-19 but got the all-clear on international duty.

Man Utd injury news: Comeback dates for Rashford, Greenwood and Shaw as trio hope to be fit for West Brom clash

MANCHESTER UNITED are sweating on the fitness of Marcus Rashford and several more stars ahead of Saturday’s game with West Brom.
The Baggies come to Old Trafford for an 8pm kick-off after the international break.

Chief among Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s concerns will be the availability of Rashford.
The striker, 23, injured his shoulder against Everton before the international break, forcing him to miss England’s Nations League games.
United will hope to have Rashford back for the weekend with Mason Greenwood also possibly in contention.
England bosses agreed not to select the youngster for either the senior or Under-21s meet-ups this week.

U21s boss Aidy Boothroyd admitted Greenwood ‘has had a lot of niggling injuries and a lot of things going on in his life’.
Eric Bailly has not featured since early October and is fighting to be fit for next weekend.
Ivory Coast did call up the defender for a double-header of AFCON qualifiers versus Madagascar, but he featured in neither game.
Solskjaer may need the centre-back to ease his defensive headache with Luke Shaw out until next month.

He picked up a hamstring problem against Everton, leading to the manager lambasting the Premier League’s fixture scheduling.
Therefore, it would be an ideal time for new signing Alex Telles to become available.
Yet the Brazilian, who missed four games with coronavirus, had again tested positive for the illness despite playing for his country last week.
United still hope that Telles will be free to play after a fresh negative test was most recently returned.
Phil Jones will not be able to fill in against West Brom while he continues to recover from a knee complaint.
But Jesse Lingard is expected to be fit having returned from a knock in recent weeks.

Solskjaer will need all the help he can get with the Red Devils kicking off a fresh fixture pile-up on Saturday.
Istanbul Basaksehir and Paris Saint-Germain travel to Manchester for midweek Champions League games, either side of a trip to Southampton.
Two games a week will remain the order of the day right up through the Christmas period with Manchester City, Leeds, a Carabao Cup clash with Everton, and Leicester among the opponents on the horizon.

Man Utd eye David Carmo – dubbed ‘next Van Dijk’ – but face transfer competition with TEN clubs keen on £36m defender

MANCHESTER UNITED are not alone in their desire to sign David Carmo, it has been claimed.
The Portuguese defender, 21, is making a name for himself at Braga and recently signed a new contract with the club.

David Carmo is attracting interest from across EuropeCredit: Getty Images – Getty

That served to double his release clause, from £18million to £36m.
Reports last week indicated that United were keen on Carmo.
However, the club’s backlog of defenders, including Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo, could mean that a sale is necessary before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can add to his defence.
Even if the Red Devils can clear space, as many as TEN rival clubs have already made contact with Carmo’s representatives over a move, according to The Athletic.

Roma were said to have bid £15m for the youngster in the summer before completing a deal for Chris Smalling.
Coming in at 6ft 5in but described as strong in possession, Carmo has attracted comparisons to Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk.

The left-footed centre-back made his Primeira Liga debut in January and has racked up 27 appearances for Braga.
Until a red card against Vitoria Guimaraes last month, he had been ever-present in Carlos Carvalhal’s side and featured in the 4-0 Europa League humbling at the hands of Leicester.

Braga tied Carmo down to a long-term contract last week, which runs to 2025.
After signing the deal, the Portugal youth international expressed his optimism at challenging for titles with Braga second in the league.

He stated: “I am very happy and I feel at home. I feel that Braga believe in me and that people value my work.
“What I try to do is to help the club as much as possible and that is what I will try to do in the future, for the next five years.
“I don’t like to call myself an example to others, but rather proof that it is possible, that if you work, if you have all of the conditions on and off the field, that you are be able to seize the opportunity.
“I think that a player from Braga has more and more responsibility because Braga are a big club, we are increasingly one of the best teams in Portugal.”
