But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could not select his first-choice forward in his line-up.
The manager confirmed to MUTV, via utdreport, that Martial fell ill overnight.
As a result, the 24-year-old was left ‘by himself’ to watch the game.
It is not yet known whether Martial was suffering from coronavirus-like symptoms.

Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford started for United in their colleague’s absence, with Edinson Cavani on the bench.
Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay, Luke Shaw, Eric Bailly, Jesse Lingard and Phil Jones were also unavailable.
Martial had suffered indifferent form in the early weeks of 2020-21, and is still yet to score in the Premier League.
Paul Scholes has been one to question the striker’s mentality following his difficult in backing up last year’s top form.

The ex-midfielder said in the week: “I don’t think he’s got that movement for centre-forward, he’s not good with his back to goal.
“But when he gets the ball and he’s facing someone, it’s a different position. You see him going at someone.
“He’s a little moody but once he gets a goal there’s every chance he’ll go on to get three or four.”

How Man Utd could line-up at Southampton as Solskjaer faces injury crisis with Pogba, Lindelof and Wan-Bissaka doubts

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER expects to be without Paul Pogba again when Manchester United travel to Southampton on Sunday.
The Frenchman has missed two games in a row due to an ankle knock.

And the manager has confirmed Pogba’s absence from training on Friday, meaning a possible first Premier League start for Donny van de Beek.
Having impressed in the 4-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir, he may finally get the call in the league to provide further creativity in the middle of the park.
Solskjaer will have to decide between the playmaker and Nemanja Matic , to partner Fred in his 4-2-3-1, with Scott McTominay also a major doubt.

The decision may be affected by the availability of two of his first-choice defenders.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a doubt after picking up an ankle knock in midweek and Victor Lindelof has a back problem.
Both men were taken off during the Istanbul win and Solskjaer may hold them back for the following Wednesday’s game with Paris Saint-Germain.
Solskjaer told BT Sport in midweek: “Hopefully they’ll be ready for the weekend.

“It’s ankle for Aaron and back for Victor. There was no point taking any more risks.”

Axel Tuanzebe and Timothy Fosu-Mensah stand by to fill in with Eric Bailly fighting to be fit after suffering a muscle injury.
Luke Shaw will miss the game with a hamstring problem and Phil Jones is also out, but Jesse Lingard has recovered from coronavirus.
In attack, United are waiting on Marcus Rashford’s recovery from a knock.
The club confirmed on Friday that the Red Devils are hopeful of the forward making the game.
Solskjaer will also have to decide whether to continue with Edinson Cavani down the middle.
The Uruguayan impressed when starting on Tuesday but hasn’t played back-to-back 90 minutes since February.

If he starts, Solskjaer can either keep Anthony Martial on the flank or return Juan Mata to the starting XI.
After the Istanbul win, the Norwegian said: “Edinson is a good old fashioned number nine and we haven’t had that for a while.
“And I was happy with how Anthony played off the left.”

Man Utd ace Van de Beek goes Christmas shopping wearing matching ‘sleeping bag’ coats with girlfriend Estelle Bergkamp

MANCHESTER UNITED star Donny van de Beek was snapped doing his Christmas shopping with girlfriend Estelle Bergkamp in matching ‘sleeping bag’ coats.
The Dutch midfielder, 23, joined the Red Devils for £40million in the summer from Ajax.

And he seems to have settled into life in Manchester as he was pictured holding hands with partner Estelle as they nipped into the city centre.
The young couple wrapped up warm in matching long black coats to hold off the winter chill ahead of the festive season.
Estelle, 24, is the daughter of Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp and she was born in London, one year into her father’s Gunners career.

Last summer she started dating Holland international Van de Beek after they met in Amsterdam.
The couple’s cosy-looking winter wear bore more than a slight resemblance to the legendary touchline coat worn by Bergkamp’s old boss Arsene Wenger.
Despite arriving as United’s headline signing of the transfer window, Van de Beek has struggled for Premier League game time.
Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is yet to start the Dutchman in the league but has used him from the off in three out of their four Champions League fixtures.

And he took his chance in Tuesday night’s 4-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir at Old Trafford.

United legend and pundit Rio Ferdinand called for Van de Beek to be given a shot after the ‘refreshing’ star’s ‘close to perfect’ performance.
Ferdinand told BT Sport: “I was very impressed. You spend £40m on a player and you want to see him make more than just cameos here and there.
“I think he is the one player in this squad who is happy playing one-touch, two-touch, keeping it simple… sacrificing parts of his game to help other people flourish.
“In any great team you need players like that and he’s one player who will make other players tick, and make them play better.”
Former England midfielder Owen Hargreaves added: “I thought Van de Beek was close to perfect.
“He is so unselfish, he can just fit in and play the right balls everywhere.”

Man Utd boss Solskjaer must trust Van de Beek in Premier League soon as £40m star is creative spark vs Basaksehir

WHAT MORE does Donny van de Beek have to do to be trusted in the Premier League?
Since his £40m summer arrival at Manchester United from Ajax, the Dutchman has started three out of four Champions League group games, including the stroll past Istanbul Basaksehir.

It was a performance full of forward-thinking efficiency, consistency and creativity from the heart of a United midfield that has been lacking in those departments.
Yet he has started none of United’s eight league games so far, playing just 88 minutes. And when he has, it has been alongside four different midfield partners.
It must be a bizarre feeling to be depended on against last year’s semi-finalists Red Bull Leipzig in Europe’s elite competition, but limited to just 11 minutes at home to West Brom.

And after yet another impressive Euro display, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must be running out of excuses.
One of his excuses, the enigma that is Paul Pogba, was taken out of the United boss’ hands last night after revealing the Frenchman remains troubled with injuries.
“His ankle has swollen up,” said Solskjaer. “He trained yesterday but it didn’t feel right. This morning it was just confirmation he couldn’t play.”
A blessing in disguise for Van de Beek perhaps, who continues to show – in Europe at least – what an asset he can be for United when used correctly.

One of the issues facing Van de Beek is Bruno Fernandes, who scored twice in a driven performance. The comparisons are constant, but unnecessary.

Van de Beek is just not that sort of player, and ironically, showed just how helpful he can be to Fernandes when deployed as a holding No.6 against Istanbul.
Former Dutch international Rafael Van der Vaart half-jokingly suggested earlier this month that his compatriot is the only United player who can ‘kick a marble’.
He arguably has a point; last night’s passing display and control over the game was full of exactly what United’s front line have been crying out for – forward-thinking passes.
Nothing fancy or spectacular, but brave, accurate, and almost always into the feet of United’s most dangerous player in Fernandes.
That exact combination ended with Marcus Rashford having a well-worked goal ruled out for offside, while a round-the-corner pass in his own half sparked the attack for Fernandes’ second.

United legends Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes saw it too.
“He is a breath of fresh air,” admitted Rio. “He is getting the ball and transitioning it to attacking areas well. A big difference to what we have seen in the last few weeks.”
Scholes agreed: “His link-up play with Bruno was very clever.”
In fairness to Ole, there still remain doubts over Van de Beek out of possession.
But with the ball, it is hard to find a player in this current United squad that can manipulate the ball, spark attacks and keep it ticking better than Donny.
And with Pogba a doubt for the weekend trip to Southampton, all eyes will be on Ole’s team sheet.
Another place on the bench for Donny in the league, and he may just lose his marbles. More

    — ravel morrison (@morrisonravel) November 24, 2020

The Red Devils legend was fuming ‘one of the reserve players’ had nicked the charger he was using in the Carrington dressing room.
But Morrison has now taken to Twitter to set the record straight and claimed it was ‘all Rio’s fault’.
He said he gave his phone to the former centre-back to charge while he was playing in an Under-18s game.
He wrote: “@rioferdy5 Put my phone on charge for me, i had a U18s game on the way out I Gave him my phone.. 90 minutes later.. phone smashed to tiny pieces.

Rooney, who ended up the club’s all-time goal scorer with 253 goals, admits he damaged the mobile before realising it belonged to academy kid Morrison and not one of his successful United first team pals.
Rooney told the Utd Podcast: “I remember I smashed his phone up at one point.

“He came in the first team dressing room when he was in the reserves. My phone was on charge and he took it off and put his on.
“It was when we had the old BlackBerries and it had the email address on the front.
“I thought it was one of the other lads so when I saw it was one of the reserve players I just smashed the phone up!”

Rooney cited Morrison, now 27 and at Dutch club ADO Den Haag, as the biggest disappointment not to make the grade at Old Trafford.
He added: “With the younger players it’s been well documented about Ravel Morrison.
“He was brilliant in training and then he had a few issues and it halted his career.
“We all thought he was going to be top level. Everyone could see those issues were going to be there. I spoke to him.
“Gary Neville was trying to get him to live with him. There were different things people tried.”
Rooney also revealed he nearly left Old Trafford for Chelsea and that there was strong interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona but a move to rivals Manchester City was never close to going through.
