Man Utd cult hero Macheda on loan transfers ‘killing’ his career and surprise call from Sir Alex Ferguson last year

FEDERICO MACHEDA has admitted that loan moves and the wrong mentality prevented him from becoming a Manchester United star.
Few have burst onto the scene like the Italian, who struck two winners in his first two games for the club.

Sir Alex Ferguson rang the Italian last year to check up on his progress

A stunning injury-time effort against Aston Villa in April 2009 was followed up by a sharp finish past Sunderland a week later.
Alas, the Italian failed to live up to his early promise and has opened up on his rise, fall, and rise again.
After almost two years in the United setup, he was sent on loan to Sampdoria for a spell that hammered his confidence.
Macheda, 29, told the Mail: “Those six months marred my career because they tried to kill me as a footballer.

“I started to doubt myself a little bit.
“We were fighting relegation and being attacked by people.
“They thought because I was from Manchester United I was going to save them, but I wasn’t ready.
“I was still a young guy. It wasn’t working and I wasn’t the one to make it work.”

The striker would spend time at Queens Park Rangers, Stuttgart, Doncaster and Birmingham before leaving for Cardiff in 2014.
A quiet stint in South Wales was followed by two years back in Italy before finding his feet with Panathinaikos.
A record of 30 goals in 80 games for the Greek outfit is a very respectable return and Macheda acknowledged how tough it was to hit form again.
He continued: “It hasn’t been as good as I had hoped but I’ve learned a lot.
“I’ve overcome a lot of things in my career.
“Of course, I wish it could have gone another way, with the way it started and the way it was going.

If I could go back, I wouldn’t swap. I wouldn’t change that moment… Maybe it came too soon
    Federico Macheda

“I was very down and I managed to turn things around and that isn’t easy in football, especially after the path I’ve had.
“But if I could go back, I wouldn’t swap. I wouldn’t change that moment. Maybe it came too soon, but it’s something that every United fan will remember.”
Nowadays, the shirt and a photo of his debut winner hang in the family home in Italy and Sir Alex Ferguson even called him up a year ago to check on his former prodigy.
Macheda has admitted that he perhaps was not well equipped to deal with the demanding life of a professional footballer.
That Villa goal came at the tender age of 17 and he would fail to ‘understand’ what was needed when the going got tough.
He said: “I think I could have done more.

“I was working in an amazing team and I feel I let myself down. The whole picture, not just one thing.
“The way of playing, looking after my body, my life.
“The way of thinking, because when you don’t play you have to fight and I was finding excuses.
“I had the wrong reaction and I wasn’t working as hard as I should have done.
“When you’re young, you don’t understand many things. If I had the mentality I have now, things could have been much different for me.”

Man Utd in Erling Haaland transfer blow with ‘Barcelona now frontrunners due to agent Mino Raiola relationship’

MANCHESTER UNITED could miss out on Erling Haaland after reports emerged of a Barcelona plot to land the striker.
Catalunya Radio, via BarcaCentre, report on the Norwegian’s agent being keen to send his client to the Camp Nou.

A number of clubs have been linked to Haaland since he broke out at RB Salzburg last season.
United failed in a reported attempt to sign the youngster as he headed to Borussia Dortmund.
Stellar form in Germany, including a brace past RB Leipzig on the weekend, has continued his ascendancy.
Barcelona are reportedly a club Raiola wants to build a good relationship with – and the move is touted for this summer.

The Catalans are currently undertaking presidential elections which could harbour a spending spree from the successful candidate.
Eric Garcia and Memphis Depay are thought to be targets for this window despite the club’s difficult financial situation.
Candidates Emili Rousaud and Joan Laporta, the favourite for the role, are both linked with bids for Haaland.
After Rousaud last month claimed he had discussed the deal with Raiola, the agent shot back that any talks were ‘fake news’.

    Mino RaiolaOn Barcelona Rumours

He told Sport1: “When a new president is elected, they can call me.”
Real Madrid are also rumoured to be keen on the 20-year-old marksman, but are said to be focusing their efforts on Kylian Mbappe.
Any potential United deal for Haaland would have to go through Raiola, who has previously spoken against the club in regard to another of his clients, Paul Pogba.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisted the Frenchman has a ‘good attitude’ after his agent’s bombshell comments suggested a return to Juventus was on the cards.

Gary Neville APOLOGISES for his Sky Sports commentary after hearing of Salford’s late winner during Man Utd game

GARY NEVILLE has apologised for his ‘delirious’ commentary during Manchester United’s win at Burnley.
The Red Devils went top in front of their former defender – who was in the commentary box for Sky Sports – thanks to a deflected Paul Pogba volley in the second-half.

Salford’s late win at Scunthorpe distracted the Sky Sports punditCredit: Rex Features

Neville was described by some on Twitter as ‘absolutely buzzing’ during the game and afterwards the former England player himself said of United going top: “It could easily turn the other way in three of four weeks time but like I said it’s not going to stop United fans getting carried away because why shouldn’t they?”
Neville, 45, has since admitted to missing the mark in his analysis – in part because in addition to a United victory, there was a late winner for his League Two side, Salford.
He tweeted on Wednesday night: “Apologies for the commentary tonight!
“Stockley Park all over the place, producer in my ear saying Salford have scored in the 92min and United gone top of the league!

“Delirious! I will be better Sunday.”

    — Gary Neville (@GNev2) January 12, 2021

Indeed, Ian Henderson struck in the 89th minute of Salford’s trip to Scunthorpe to put the pundit’s side fifth in the table.
Along with a host of other United legends, the former right-back is a shareholder in the team and later retweeted a couple of celebratory moments from their game.
    TURF MOOR CONTROVERSY
VAR was a regular feature in an at-times controversial affair at Turf Moor.

Viewers were left confused during the Burnley clash when Kevin Friend reviewed two major incidents from the same passage of play.
Luke Shaw followed through on Johann Berg Gudmundsson in a studs-up challenge originally deemed fair by the referee, before Robbie Brady scythed down Edinson Cavani moments later.
VAR asked Friend to review Shaw’s challenge, leading to a yellow card for the defender who Neville described as ‘lucky’ to dodge a dismissal.

United fans were fuming before half-time when Harry Maguire’s goal was disallowed for a questionable foul in the area.
The visitors would escape a later VAR review for what would have been a controversial handball penalty against Maguire.
Neville suggested the centre-back could have been in trouble during the check, prompting some United fans to accuse their hero of leaning too far against his old team, in an apparent bid to appear unbiased.
With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side top of the league ahead of Sunday’s trip to Liverpool, the pundit filmed himself humming a fan song dedicated to his playing days: “Gary Neville is a red, he hates Scousers.”

Premier League release statement over why Man Utd star Luke Shaw was not sent off and Brady didn’t see red at Burnley

PREMIER LEAGUE chiefs have revealed why Luke Shaw and Robbie Brady both dodged red cards in a mad minute at Burnley.
Manchester United’s win at Turf Moor involved a number of controversial calls, including a double VAR check in the first-half.

Luke Shaw clattered into Johann Berg Gudmundsson in his half, a challenge that referee Kevin Friend deemed fair.
The ball then broke for a United attack which saw Edinson Cavani felled by Brady.
Claims were made that both challenges were worthy of dismissals, with Shaw missing the ball and landing his studs on Gudmundsson’s ankle.
Likewise, Brady wiped out Cavani in a tackle that would have seen the Uruguayan through on goal.

Fans watching on were left asking questions as to how the process played out and refereeing chiefs PGMOL have released a statement explaining the VAR calls.
It read: “In the 27th minute of Burnley vs. Manchester United, Robbie Brady was shown a yellow card for a foul on Edinson Cavani.
“On the recommendation of the VAR, referee Kevin Friend went to the Referee Review Area to check for a possible red card for Brady for a denial of a goalscoring opportunity offence and a possible foul by Luke Shaw that was in the same attacking phase of play.
“When the referee was at the screen, he was first shown the challenge by Shaw on Johann Berg Gudmundsson.

“He determined that this was a foul and was part of the phase of play that led to the challenge by Brady.
“The restart was a Burnley free-kick, with Brady’s yellow card rescinded, and a yellow card issued to Shaw.”
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp was left surprised that Shaw was allowed to stay on the pitch.
He said: “I think Luke Shaw will be a relieved man in the dressing room.
“In the current climate where the game is so sanitised, I think he gets a little bit of the ball but certainly goes over the top and catches him.
‘For me that is reckless and dangerous. I think he is really lucky.”
Fellow Sky analyst and former United star Gary Neville agreed, deeming Shaw ‘lucky’.

VAR was called into action again later in the half with left-back Shaw crossing for Harry Maguire to nod home.
However, Friend and his replay officials agreed that the Red Devils captain had committed a foul in winning his header.
United nonetheless claimed all three points on Tuesday night thanks to Paul Pogba’s deflected volley.
The win put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side top ahead of their weekend trip to defending champions Liverpool, who sit three points further back.

Man Utd sweating on FOUR injury worries for Burnley and Liverpool clashes with Solskjaer set to call on Tuanzebe

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER is sweating on the fitness of four players heading into his biggest week as Manchester United boss.
Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof all missed the 1-0 FA Cup third-round win over Watford.

Eric Bailly will definitely miss the match after suffering a neck injury versus WatfordCredit: Reuters

And Eric Bailly is a serious doubt with a neck problem after being clattered by his own keeper, Dean Henderson.
The Red Devils can go top at Burnley on Tuesday before a massive trip to arch-rivals Liverpool on Sunday.
And Solskjaer revealed only one of the three who missed out on Saturday will be back to face the reigning champs.
The United boss said: “I hope one will definitely be fit for Liverpool but I’m not sure if they will make Burnley.”

Bailly’s injury looked nasty as he collided with Henderson’s knee but Solskjaer confirmed it was not concussion.
And the defender, who was replaced by Harry Maguire just before the break, assured worried fans he is fine, tweeting: “I am OK, it was just a knock.”
CASINO DEALS: BEST SIGN UP OFFERS TO CLAIM OVER £700

Bailly will miss the Turf Moor clash, though.

And with Lindelof likely to miss out, too, Axel Tuanzebe, who impressed against the Hornets, is likely to be drafted in alongside Maguire.
Centre-back Tuanzebe, 23, started just his fourth game of the season against Watford.
He said: “We want to be top of the league and this is the time to do it.
“They are two games that can really cement our position at the top and we just bounce on from there.
“I’d obviously love to get more minutes, so I can constantly keep my performances up. Obviously the team are doing well so the only way in is really to force myself in with the chances that I do get.

Eric’s a warrior, that’s what he does for us — he gets in the way of things.
    Axel Tuanzebe

“Sometimes the opportunity can just come out of the blue.”
United legend Rio Ferdinand said Tuanzebe needs to be asking questions over his lack of game time since starring against Paris Saint-Germain in October.
Ferdinand said: “There has to be a moment in your career where you say, ‘Listen, I’ve been here a long time, I’ve done the groundwork, everyone knows what I’m about. Where do I stand in the rankings in the club?’.
“Does he want to play football? He did well against PSG, against world-class opposition, and then he doesn’t play.”

Bailly has started five of the last six games and had been in prime form since returning from an injury picked up with Ivory Coast in October.
And Tuanzebe added: “He’s fine — that’s the main thing.
“It’s good to see he’s all right. He’s a warrior, that’s what he does for us — he gets in the way of things.
“It’s good to see that he’s all right and he should be training in the next week or so.”

Man Utd face Romain Faivre transfer battle with PSG as they line up swoop for 22-year-old Brest midfielder

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly set to go toe-to-toe with Paris Saint-Germain in pursuit of Romain Faivre.
The Brest midfielder, 22, has been one of Ligue 1’s surprise standouts in 2020-21 after a move from Monaco.

Les Pirates paid around £450,000 for Faivre last summer and a sale would reap a pretty profit for the Brittany club.
According to Le10Sport, a whole host of clubs are taking an interest in the player.
United and PSG are named as two contenders, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently adding a new wide-man to his squad in Amad Diallo.
Mauricio Pochettino got a good look at Faivre on Saturday night as the youngster played 90 minutes in his first win as Les Parisiens boss.

In 19 appearances for Brest, he has notched four goals and three assists.
That includes a winner against old club Monaco in October and a late equaliser from the spot away to high-flying Lyon.

Brest have already moved to keep Faivre from interested parties, extending his contract to 2025 on Christmas Eve.

January may be a quiet month at Old Trafford with Ecuadorian wonderkid Moises Caicedo one of few players linked.
Marcos Rojo and Sergio Romero have been told they can leave the club ahead of their contracts expiring in June.

Man Utd sweat on Eric Bailly fitness for Burnley and Liverpool games as Solskjaer confirms neck injury

MANCHESTER UNITED could be without Eric Bailly for the Premier League games against Burnley and Liverpool after the defender picked up a neck injury against Watford.

But it came at a cost with Bailly having to come off just before half-time after being clattered by his own keeper Dean Henderson.
He is now an injury doubt for Burnley and then the mouthwatering clash against champs Liverpool as United aim to go TOP of the Premier League table.
Speaking after the cup triumph, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “It’s his neck I think.

“His head is fine. There is no concussion or anything like that.
“But we have got to do scans.”
The player himself also moved to reassure fans as he tweeted: “I am OK. It was just a knock.”
And his centre-half partner for the Old Trafford victory, Axel Tuanzebe, is expecting a quick recovery from the ‘warrior’.

He said: “He’s alright, it’s good to see, he’s a warrior, he gets in the way of things.

“It’s good to see he’s alright and I’m sure he’ll be training this week.”
Bailly, 26, was replaced by club captain Harry Maguire as United scraped past plucky Watford in a disjointed performance.
The Ivory Coast centre-half has been in fine form in recent weeks having bagged the spot next to Maguire ahead of Victor Lindelof.
And former Red Devil Rio Ferdinand is hoping Bailly is back to marshal the defence.

The defender will be assessed int he coming daysCredit: Reuters
He told BT Sport: “He’s been one of the positives in this good run of form they’ve had.
“He’s one of the ones where you’ve sat and thought, ‘actually, he looks like the difference-maker in that back-line especially’.
“This is something that has undone his Man United career time and time again, and he’s got another injury today, hopefully it’s not too serious.”

Man Utd player ratings: Hero McTominay shows he’s captain material but Lingard fails to make most of rare start

MANCHESTER UNITED booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Watford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer picked a much-changed team for the Championship club’s visit.

Scott McTominay excelled with the armband on in Saturday’s winCredit: Getty Images – Getty

But it was Scott McTominay who proved his worth once again with a fifth-minute winner.
Jesse Lingard, Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams were all handed chances to impress from the start.
Here, SunSport’s Oscar Paul delivers his verdict on the individual performances on Saturday night.
    Dean Henderson – 6/10
Raced off his line early on to save from Adam Masina but looked frantic and had a couple of uncomfortable moments in the first-half.

KO’d Eric Bailly, was nearly caught out in no man’s land haring out of his box, and his distribution was mixed. Barely tested by Watford as the Hornets chased an equaliser.
    Brandon Williams – 6
Aggressive and assured in the unfamiliar right-back role, although it was far from a tough night with Watford’s limited threat coming down the opposite flank.
Offered little going forward as the Red Devils struggled to open Watford up.
    Eric Bailly – 6
A couple of loose balls and nervy moments at the back, and flashed a free header wide at the other end.

Replaced by Harry Maguire just before the break after being clattered by Dean Henderson.
FANCY A PUNT? CLAIM £40 IN FREE BETS BY BETTING £10

Eric Bailly was forced off after suffering a nasty head injuryCredit: Reuters
    Axel Tuanzebe – 7
Solid and composed in a rare start for the 23-year-old.
An important goal-line clearance in the first half kept things level before keeping Watford chances down to a minimum in the second.
    Alex Telles  – 7
The Brazilian’s outswinging corner was met by Scott McTominay to get United up and running, before a carbon copy was nodded wide by Eric Bailly.
Recovered well against the dangerous Ismaila Sarr having got himself in a muddle a couple of times.
    Scott McTominay – 8
A dream night. Captain for the first time, McTominay’s header got United up and running inside five minutes.
But just like legendary skippers Bryan Robson and Roy Keane, the midfielder did the dirty work at the back with some pivotal interventions.

Captain McTominay flung himself at an early corner to notch the winnerCredit: PA:Press Association
Donny van de Beek – 7
A sublime flick to put Juan Mata in on goal was the one moment of pure class in a dull tie.
Dictated the play early on with plenty of the ball and, after three minutes in United’s previous four games, the Dutchman has to be close to a run of starts in the league.
    Daniel James – 6
A lively start but his decision-making and finishing continues to frustrate.
Blew a couple of decent chances before being replaced as United faded as an attacking force.
    Juan Mata – 6
Should have scored on his left peg after being beautifully played in by Donny van de Beek.
On his 400th game in English football, the Spaniard found some promising positions but failed to get the United attack purring.

Juan Mata was one of many players handed a rare start versus WatfordCredit: Getty Images – Getty
    Jesse Lingard – 5
No disaster but did little to suggest he will be anywhere near the league side anytime soon.
Kept things neat and tidy but failed to impose himself in his first start since September.
    Mason Greenwood – 5
A quiet night after being handed a golden chance to make the lone striker’s position his own.
Could not get in the game and barely had a sight of goal before being replaced by Anthony Martial.
    Subs:
    Harry Maguire  (for Bailly, 45) – 6
Would have been hoping for a rare night off but replaced the injured Eric Bailly just before half-time.
Some trademark headers and clearances but was rarely troubled. Went close with a header at the other end late on.

Harry Maguire (right) came off the bench to help see out the winCredit: EPA

    Anthony Martial (for Greenwood, 69) – 6
Brought on for Mason Greenwood to add a spark but did not have a sniff.
    Marcus Rashford (for James, 69) – 6
A great run down the left minutes after coming on but his shot was straight at the keeper.
    Nemanja Matic (for Lingard, 79) – 6
Replaced Jesse Lingard to close the game out and got through the last ten minutes unruffled.
