Man Utd ‘in talks over Nikola Milenkovic transfer’ and told Fiorentina defender will cost just £30m

MANCHESTER UNITED have opened talks over a deal for Fiorentina star Nikola Milenkovic, according to reports.
The Serbian centre-back has been a star in Tuscany since signing from Partizan Belgrade in 2017, drawing interest from a number of clubs.

Manchester City, Tottenham, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool have all been named in reports on the 23-year-old.

According to transfer journalist Constantin Eckner, Milenkovic’s representatives are in talks with the Red Devils over a summer move.
However, a number of teams are also said to be in contact to gauge a bid.
Fiorentina would demand a fee of £30million for the player, it is reported.

A defender has been high on United’s wish list for some time, particularly amid criticism of Victor Lindelof.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have made a better fist of a title fight this season but the backline has been an issue, conceding the eighth-highest number of goals in the Premier League.
Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde has been linked as well as Milenkovic, but like the Serb he will attract wide-ranging interest this summer.
Fiorentina have remained lodged in mid-table for much of the season, of which the defender has played 24 games and kept five clean sheets.

Milenkovic’s contract runs only to 2022 and Viola sporting director Daniele Prade claimed earlier this month that renewal discussions are underway.
He told reporters: “We are talking about it, these are situations that we will face but right now we have to think only of the pitch.
“The team is responding, some results have been excellent, others less so. We just think about playing.”

Man Utd and Liverpool set for Raphinha transfer battle but Leeds desperate to keep star after amazing debut season

LEEDS star Raphinha could become the subject of a transfer battle between Manchester United and Liverpool, according to reports.
After leaving Rennes for Yorkshire in October, the Brazilian winger has been a key man at Elland Road.

His form has alerted the likes of United and Liverpool, among others ahead of the summer transfer market.
SportItalia report on the interest, with Leeds ready to fight to keep hold of the 24-year-old.
The Whites forked out £17million for Raphinha last year following a single season in France.
Scoring a winner past Everton in only his second start for the club, he has gone on to bag five goals and five assists this season.

Netting again versus Southampton in midweek, the Brazilian revealed a heartfelt tribute to Ronaldinho’s mother after she passed away aged 71.
Both the footballers’ families hail from Restinga neighbourhood of Porto Alegre and Raphinha dedicated his goal to Miguelina, revealing a message to the family on his vest during the game.

The best thing you can do with spontaneous players like this is to let them be themselves.
    Marcelo Bielsa

Speaking after the game, Marcelo Bielsa outlined why the attacker has become such a big asset to his team.

The Leeds boss said: “He’s a player who unbalances by himself.
“He’s very ambitious, very competitive. It’s not a very common mix because he works a lot and on top of that he is creative and can unbalance.
“I sincerely think I can add very little to his game. The best thing you can do with spontaneous players like this is to let them be themselves.”

A defender is reportedly high on Manchester United’s agenda ahead of the summer.
Sevilla’s Jules Kounde is one target featuring in gossip columns with there also talk of an attacking addition such as Raphinha.
Leeds will fight tooth and nail to keep him but both United and Liverpool would hope to dangle Champions League football his way.
However, defenders are also being more commonly linked with the Anfield giants of late with Fiorentina ace Nikola Milenkovic and Lille’s Sven Botman both named in reports.

Dybala’s contract expires in 2022 but injury issues are hampering his chances of signing a new deal in the coming weeks.
Juve managing director Fabio Paratici has admitted that the club are concerned by his fitness woe.
Talks over a new contract are taking place but could continue for ‘months’.
He said: “Paulo still has a few problems – it’s like he’s on a swing.

“Some days he’s better and others he’s worse. He seemed okay [last week], then he felt some pain again.
“We have spoken [about this contract], we have been speaking and will continue to speak in the next few days and months.”

Having been named on the bench for the Champions League defeat at Porto, 27-year-old Dybala again found himself ruled out of Monday’s victory over Crotone.

It was the 13th game he has missed due to injury in a turbulent campaign that has produced only three goals for the typically prolific forward.
Dybala is only two strikes away from reaching 100 Juventus goals, a feat achieved by only 12 players in the club’s prestigious history.
It is thought that the Old Lady will sell the attacker if he cannot agree a new deal by the summer.

Currently eight points behind in the title race and suffering from major pandemic-inflicted financial problems, the end of the season could herald a squad overhaul at Allianz Stadium.
In the summer of 2019, Tottenham were strongly linked with a deadline day swoop for the player and Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly keen on bringing him to new club Paris Saint-Germain.
Napoli have also been urged to bid for Dybala, in a reversal of the controversial move that saw Gonzalo Higuain sign for Juve in 2016.

How to pronounce Man Utd wonderkid Shola Shoretire’s name properly… and it’s not how you think

MANCHESTER UNITED gave Shola Shoretire his debut at just 17 years old at the weekend.
And while the academy prospect only had a handful of touches in the dying stages, there was still plenty of talk around the talent.

And one line of conversation was around how to pronounce his surname.
BT Sport commentator Des Kelly went with ‘shore-ea-teery’ phonetically, that had a few United fans wondering whether he had got it all wrong.
One supporter asked ‘where the hell Des Kelly got this pronunciation’ – with the sports journo quick to respond on Twitter.
Kelly answered: “From his Dad. Anything else I can help you with?”

The United wonderkid, 17, was being courted by the likes of European giants Barcelona and Juventus before he signed his first professional deal with the Red Devils recently.
Shoretire was then fast-tracked to the first team and added to the club’s Europa League squad ahead of their tie against Spanish side Real Sociedad.
He sat on the bench against Sociedad in Europe, but his patience prevailed as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought him on against Newcastle in the league, handing the youngest his pro debut.
Shoretire replaced Marcus Rashford with just a minute to go but got a sense of the big-time at Old Trafford.

After the game Rashford sent a classy message to Shoretire after his debut.
Alongside a heart emoji, he tweeted: “Cherish this moment for ever little bro. Your family must be very proud.”
Speaking post-match, England hero Rashford added: “It’s in our DNA, it’s what we do at Man United.
“It’s important our kids know when they’re good enough, [they know] they’re old enough.
“Shola has been training with us now for a little while, and has done really well, [this] was the next step up.
“In the last transfer window we let a few players go out on loan, which made the path for him shorter and I’m sure he’ll remember his five or six minutes on the pitch tonight.”

Van Persie reveals how Sir Alex slammed two stars as a***holes’ who went out partying after Man Utd loss to City in 2013

SIR ALEX FERGUSON hammered ‘a***hole’ stars in front of their teammates for partying after a derby defeat, Robin van Persie once revealed.
A 2-1 loss to Manchester City still left the Red Devils 12 points clear as they raced to the Premier League title – but Fergie was fuming.

Two first-team players were humiliated in front of the dressing room for partying the night of the defeat with photographs of their exploits plastered over the walls.
Van Persie told SoFoot: “During my first season with United we were 15 points clear at the top. We hosted Manchester City hoping to wrap up the title.
“We lost, but were still 12 points clear. Most managers wouldn’t have made a drama out of the situation.
“But the boss got really fired up. Things got extremely heated, as two of the squad had gone out after the defeat.

“The day after the game Sir Alex had photos put up on the dressing room wall of the two players taken during their night out.
“He told the entire squad: ‘Boys, if we don’t win the league it’s because of these two a***holes who opted to go out’.
“I know the names, but can’t reveal them. The manager slaughtered them. It was amazing. He’d put up photos documenting where they were, at 2am, 3am, 4am etc, to underline just how stupid they had been.
“He didn’t stop there, but warned us that if he heard of any of us going out before we’d won the league we’d be out of the team.

“He was merciless, saying: ‘I don’t care who you are or how many trophies you’ve won – if you go out before the end of the season I’ll sell you’.
“After that speech, I had the two hardest training sessions I’ve ever had in my life. We went on to win the title. A manager has to know when to be tough, and when to take the pressure off.”
United nonetheless crawled over the line to seal the title in Ferguson’s final weeks in charge of the team, winning three of his last nine games as boss.

Premier League confirm just TWO positive Covid tests from 2,633 carried out on players and staff after Man Utd outbreak

MANCHESTER United’s backroom Covid outbreak prevented Prem chiefs announcing their first clear round of testing this season.
The latest figures revealed that there were just two positive tests last week from 2,633 samples.

United have admitted two members of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s backroom staff were self-isolating after testing positive.
The action did not prevent United’s Prem game with Newcastle taking place despite the scare.
And while it did mean Prem execs are still awaiting the first clear week this season, the fact that the issues were contained to one club is seen as another step in the right direction.
The figures revealed that one positive test came from the opening 1,290 samples taken across the 20 clubs between Monday and Thursday.

That was followed by the second positive, from 1,343 tests, between Friday and Sunday.
It matches last week’s season-low tally of two positives, with a rapid improvement since the League’s enhanced Covid measures were introduced at the start of January.
League bosses will be hoping that this week will bring a clear round, which has not happened since the end of last season in July.
Manchester United boss Solskjaer was joined on the bench against Newcastle by Nicky Butt and Mark Dempsey.

Butt, a long-time team-mate of Solskjaer’s at Old Trafford during their playing days, is the club’s head of development.
Former United player Dempsey returned to the club in 2018 as part of Solskjaer’s staff, having previously worked with the Norwegian at Molde, and is now primarily working with the academy set-up.
And all three will have been relieved to get the three points against Newcastle after a 3-1 victory.
United made a nervy start to the game but managed to go 1-0 up thanks to Marcus Rashford’s opener.
But Allen Saint-Maximin gave the Magpies some hope with an equaliser, before Dan James and Bruno Fernandes sealed the three points on offer.

Solskjaer insists Man Utd ARE still in title race despite 10-point gap to Man City… as ‘surprises’ happen in football

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER says Manchester United must hang in there in the title race – as strange things can happen in football.
The Red Devils brought the gap to leaders City back down to 10 points thanks to goals from Dan James and Bruno Fernandes versus Newcastle.

Many believe Pep Guardiola’s men already have a third crown in four seasons in the bag – but the Old Trafford chief is not giving up just yet.
Solskjaer said: “I’m never going to say it’s done until it’s done.
“You’ve seen so many examples of teams just hanging in there, doing their own jobs and something might happen.
“We’ve got to be there just in case. Every time we get three points we’ve done our job. We’ve got loads to play for.

“We can’t control any other team but ourselves – but there have been many surprises in football.”
United had their preparations for the game thrown into chaos when members of their backroom staff tested positive for Covid.

Mike Phelan and Michael Carrick were among those missing from the bench as Nicky Butt and Mark Dempsey stepped up.

The United boss said: “We’ve got good staff elsewhere. Of course it was a different preparation for the boys but that’s the situation we are in.
“We have to be ready. We did that. And we’ll have to follow the protocols.”
Newcastle looked capable of getting something from this game when the lively Allan Saint-Maximin equalised in the first-half.

But they end the weekend just three points ahead of a resurgent Fulham – with the Toon Army fearing the worst.
Bruce said: “There are six or seven teams in and around it with 13 games to go.
“There’s a few looking over shoulders, but I’m still quietly confident we’ll be fine. If we play like we did for first hour I think we’ll get the results we need.”

Man Utd hit by coronavirus outbreak among coaching staff with Nicky Butt to join Solskjaer on bench for Newcastle game

MANCHESTER UNITED have been hit by a coronavirus outbreak just hours before their Premier League clash at home to Newcastle.
Nicky Butt and Mark Dempsey will join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the Manchester United bench for the game with some other members of the coaching staff in self-isolation, the club have announced.

The individuals in self-isolation are not being identified.
It is understood there are no concerns that any players will need to isolate and tonight’s fixture, scheduled to kick off at 7pm at Old Trafford, will go ahead.

The club statement read: “Nicky Butt and Mark Dempsey will join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the bench this evening due to some of the coaching staff having to self isolate.”
Solskjaer’s side are second in the standings, 10 points behind big rivals Manchester City who play Arsenal.
But the Red Devils should be full of confidence after the 4-0 Europa League thrashing of Real Sociedad in the week.
And Solskjaer is refusing to overlook the danger poised by a Newcastle side desperate to pull themselves away from the relegation zone.

The Norwegian told the club website: “Every game in the Premier League is difficult. You’ve got to earn the right.
