Harry Maguire cheered by fans before Leicester game as Man Utd supporters rally around captain after England jeers

HARRY MAGUIRE was cheered as Manchester United fans rallied behind their captain. The United skipper received a positive reaction from home supporters before his former club Leicester visited Old Trafford.

It comes on the same week Maguire was booed by England fans before Ivory Coast were beaten 3-0 at Wembley.
His manager Ralf Rangnick had tried to urge the United faithful to get behind their captain – and it appears his words were listened to.
Rangnick said: “Harry has been a very valuable player for the team and the club as the captain.
“I didn’t understand what happened at Wembley, it won’t happen in our stadium with the Red Army.

MIKE DEAN has revealed he was “nervous” to give decisions against the likes of Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira during the early stages of his refereeing career.The 53-year-old started officiating top flight English games in 2000 after a swift rise through the ranks.

Dean has announced he will hang up his whistle at the end of the current campaign after more than two decades in the Premier League.
But he has admitted that in the first few years the likes of Keane and Vieira were intimidating players to take charge of.
Speaking on BBC Sport, he said: “I got into the Premier League in 2000 when I was 31, 32, and you had massive, big personality players, the Keanes, people like that… Vieiras, they were all around then.

But he refused to use that as an excuse for United’s failings.
He said: “It’s not easy when players think that the manager is only here for a few months. And it’s not easy for him.

“Every new manager needs some time to work on it and we are trying to do exactly what he wants from us.
“Some games we did that very well and in some games not that great.”
When asked why they have struggled on the pitch, he continued: “It’s hard for me, I’m just one player. It’s hard for me to analyse that.
“What I can say is that we are not happy, of course, with this season. We have to do much better.
“This season has been difficult for us. When you play for Manchester United you need to win trophies. This season we didn’t do it.”

He said: “Harry Maguire did not serve that. I think that he played very well for England at the last Euros. He did fantastic so I don’t understand them.

The Ajax boss is the now favourite for the Manchester United job, ahead of other contenders Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel.
Speaking to broadcaster Sport1, Ten Hag said: “I’ve sat down with Ajax after every season – and this year again, I can say that Ajax and Ten Hag are very happy with each other at the moment.
“I need all my energy for final games. Anything else would just be a distraction.”
But when pressed further, he admitted: “In football you never know.
“I don’t want to rule anything out. I know that in football everything can change from one day to the next.”
Ten Hag pleads with Ajax fans
Erik Ten Hag has pleaded with Ajax fans to understand if he leaves the club.
He said: “My focus is currently only on Ajax. But in football you never know. I don’t want to rule anything out. I’m currently employed here at Ajax to perform.
“With the cup final against Eindhoven, we still have eight finals left, and I need all my energy for that.

Ukraine manager Oleksandr Petrakov wants to play a Premier League side to prepare for his nation’s play-off tie with Scotland.

“Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool seem to have it down to a tee.
“Klopp is well aware of Liverpool’s commercial appeal and the need to have that in modern football, but his job is to win matches and that feeds commercial success too.

PSG want Arsenal/Man United target
PSG have joined Manchester United and Arsenal in the race to sign Ajax winger Antony, according to reports.
He has 12 goals and 10 assists across all competitions this season, with six of his goal contributions coming in the Champions League.
Premier League duo Man Utd and Arsenal hold an interest in signing Antony.
But according to Le10Sport, PSG has joined the pair in the race to sign the Brazil international.
In fact, PSG have “upped their pursuit” in recent weeks and are currently in the lead to capture Antony’s signature.
‘We need to win every game’
Nemanja Matic has admitted that Man United have to win every single game from now until the end of the season to clinch fourth spot.

“I’m not saying he’s a bad player by any stretch of the imagination, but how can they give someone a five-year contract when they haven’t even got a permanent manager?

Fernandes extends Man United contract

Manchester United coach Mick Clegg has revealed Paul Scholes once told him he “hated playing for England”, writes GIACOMO PISA.
Scholes won 66 caps for the Three Lions, representing his country at four major tournaments.
But Clegg recalled a tell-all chat between himself and the Manchester United legend back in 2004 in which Scholes laid his feelings bare.
The midfielder was often deployed on the left side for England in order to accommodate Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in the middle.
And bosses Sven-Goran Eriksson, Glenn Hoddle and Kevin Keegan never really managed to get the best out of Scholes, who won 11 league titles, three FA Cups and two Champions League trophies at club level.
Clegg wrote in his new book, The Power and the Glory: “Paul said he hated playing for England, which came as a bit of a shock.
“I asked him why he kept turning up and he said ‘Well it’s England, that’s what you have to do’.
“Paul was worried about the reaction he would get from the rest of the country if he stopped playing for England.”
Clegg went on to reveal that he advised Scholes he was being “bullied” into playing for England.
And soon after the chat between the pair in 2004 Scholes retired from international football, seven years after making his England debut.

Ukraine want friendlies with Man Utd, Arsenal and City to get team fit to face Scotland in World Cup play-off

UKRAINE boss Oleksandr Petrakov wants his side to play friendlies against the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City.Petrakov, 64, has remained in Kyiv throughout, despite being urged by his family to head to Western Ukraine following Russia’s invasion on February 24.

While attempting to help out in any way he can, Petrakov is also tasked with trying to lift his side through adversity and to this winter’s World Cup finals in Qatar.
Ukraine had been due to play Scotland at Hampden Park on March 24 in their World Cup play-off semi-final – only for the match to be postponed following the outbreak of war.
The match is expected to go ahead in June, although Petrokov feels his players will require some warm-up matches to get fit and ready.
Ukraine’s domestic-based players haven’t been in action since the war started, with men aged between 18 and 60 eligible to fight unable to play football.

Speaking to The Guardian, Petrakov talked up the possibility of playing against the likes of “Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal” in friendlies prior to their clash with Scotland.
He would like to see money raised from the matches going to support the Ukrainian armed forces.
Elaborating on the idea, he said: “We could play at Wembley, for example, against a London club.
“It could be a good exhibition game, a response for the Ukrainian army, as well as preparatory work for the Scotland game.”

Petrakov then added: “We have to play because without the [practice] games, it would be very hard to get to play with Scotland.”
The national team boss remains in regular contact with his players stationed outside of Ukraine, including West Ham’s Andriy Yarmolenko and Man City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko.
He continued: “They’re calling to me, saying please be safe, we couldn’t bear it if you were killed. You’re staying in dangerous zone.
“But it is easier here. If I were there, it would be harder. Mostly, all the parents of these players are staying in Ukraine. The players worry.”
Petrakov fully expects his team to be playing again by June, but he hopes they NEVER take to the field alongside Russia.
He said: “I wouldn’t want this to happen while I am still alive.
“I don’t [want] to shake hands with these guys… We have to build a great wall and do what we can do to separate from them.”
