Man Utd and Man City to MISS opening weekend of Premier League season after flopping in European competitions

MANCHESTER UNITED and neighbours City are set to miss the first weekend of the Premier League season following their Euro exits.
The Red Devils were dumped out of the Europa League last night in the semi-finals after going down 2-1 to Sevilla.

That followed Man City’s shock 3-1 defeat to Lyon in the last-eight of the Champions League 24 hours previous.
Now those results have eased what could have been a major fixture headache ahead of the Premier League fixture list being announced on Friday.
Both teams were promised a minimum of 30 days off once they had completed their 2019/20 campaign, but now having both been eliminated, that should mean they only miss the opening round of matches on September 12.

That has now raised the possibility that both could kick-off their new seasons in midweek in either September 15/16.

However, The Telegraph claims United want a longer break and have requested to begin the new campaign a few days later.
It is also believed top-flight chiefs do not want to schedule the Manchester Derby that early in the season due to it being behind closed doors.
After their respective results over the weekend, the derby has become potentially the only fixture which would be needed to find a slot for later in the season.
Meanwhile Wolves and Chelsea, the two other clubs that were still in European competition following the restart, will start their campaigns on time.

Wolves wanted themselves and the Blues to be the Manchester duos opponents for the opening weekend in order for the fixtures to be postponed.
That would have given them a longer break also, but that request is not expected to be met. More

Man Utd finish season with staggering 22 penalties… more than Arsenal have had in the last three campaigns COMBINED

MANCHESTER UNITED finished the 2019/20 season having been awarded 22 penalties – more than Arsenal have had in the last three years combined.
No side in Europe’s top five leagues have won more spot-kicks than the Red Devils since Barcelona during the 2015/16 term.

Manchester United were awarded a whopping 22 penalties during the 2019/20 season
United set a Premier League record last month when they were handed their 14th top-flight penalty of the campaign.
It means that United have been awarded a staggering 37 penalties in the last two seasons – having won 15 last term.
Their total of 22 this year is two more than what the Gunners have had since the 2017/18 season.
Mikel Arteta’s side have won just five penalties this season, meaning United have been awarded more than four times their tally.

Of their 22 spot-kicks, Marcus Rashford took nine of those – finding the back of the net on seven occasions.
Bruno Fernandes has banged in 12 goals following his arrival from Sporting Lisbon in January.
But incredibly, eight of those strikes have come from 12 yards out – with the playmaker yet to miss.
After Fernandes’ opener against Sevilla in the Europa League on Sunday, fans cheekily changed his Wikipedia page to label him a ‘professional penalty taker’.

The edited entry read: “Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes, born 8 September 1994, is a Portuguese professional penalty kick taker who plays as a penalty kick taker for Premier League club Manchester United and the Portugal national team.”
Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood, Juan Mata have also all scored penalties this term.
Meanwhile Paul Pogba missed from his only attempt during the 1-1 away draw against Wolves at Molineux.

Paul Scholes insists Man Utd must spend to win trophies despite splurging £520MILLION on transfers in last four seasons

PAUL SCHOLES has told Manchester United they must spend MORE to win trophies – despite splurging over £520MILLION in the past four seasons.
The Red Devils scraped a top-four spot on the final-day of the Premier League season in 2019-20.

Paul Scholes reckons Man Utd must spend more to be truly competitive

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Co were then dumped out of the Europa League at the semi-final stage, losing 2-1 to Sevilla.
And Scholes criticised the club for a lack of money invested in the squad – despite the club shelling out an astronomical amount in recent years.
After United’s defeat, Scholes revealed Man Utd need to spend more in order to compete – and bemoaned the club’s inability to pay the £108million necessary to sign Jadon Sancho.
He told BT Sport: “We talk about quality, we talk about spending money on a centre forward and wide players.

“We talk about hundreds of millions these days to get these players.
“But these are the players that win you trophies, these are the ones that win you medals.
“We know all this Sancho stuff is going on, they need to spend more money.
“If they want to win trophies, they’ve got to start spending the money.

“They created chances tonight but if you think of Sancho in that team tonight I think United are scoring.”

Despite Scholes claim, Man Utd have actually spent £523m in the past four seasons alone, with a net spend of £355m.
United paid £89m to sign Paul Pogba in 2016 – their club-record buy.
And Harry Maguire cost Man Utd £85m just a year ago.
On top of that, the likes of Romelu Lukaku (£75m), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£50m) and Fred (£47m) have all cost a small fortune.
So lack of investment can hardly be blamed for the club’s inability to compete at the highest level.
United have now gone without a trophy for three straight seasons for the first time in over three decades.
Solskjaer has now admitted he will dive into the “strange” transfer market this summer in a bid to bring back the glory days.
After the Sevilla loss, the boss revealed: “[The players] need to keep improving, keep doing what they’ve done every single day and they’ve worked so hard, with the right attitude and mentality.
“We need to strengthen the squad depth because it’s going to be a long season.

“We’re going to keep pushing and keep demanding more of the players that we have.
“But still, we’re looking to improve and it’s a strange one.
“The league starts very quickly, but then the [transfer] market is open for so long.
“So we’ve got to be both good, smart and clever.”

Is Solskjaer still moaning about poor marking as Man Utd flops arrive home after Europa League heartbreak vs Sevilla?

MANCHESTER UNITED arrived back home after their Europa League loss to Sevilla – with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still seemingly fuming about his side’s defending.
The Red Devils slipped to a 2-1 semi-final defeat against the European specialists and extended their trophyless streak to three years for the first time in more than 30 years.

And on his arrival back in Manchester, Solskjaer could be seen looking frustratedly at airport stuff.
The United boss shrugged and gestured as he got off the shuttle bus, as if he was explaining his tactical disappointment to the bemused worker.
The rest of the Man Utd squad were also seen arriving home, all wearing face-coverings – with the exception of Paul Pogba, who was sporting a do-rag along with his burgundy club tracksuit.
Following Sunday night’s loss, Solskjaer was quick to reveal his disappointment after his side lacked a clinical edge and looked lost in defence, at times.

Solskjaer said: “The result is very disappointing.
“We’re not devastated, but it’s one of those hard ones to take.
“I feel we played some fantastic stuff at times, created chances and just couldn’t get the goals that were, I felt, deserved at times.
“In different spells of the game, I thought we were absolutely excellent.

“We were on top for long spells, both first and second half, especially at the start of both halves.
“We created chances and should have scored, but I can’t fault the boys.

“But we seem to let off at times because when we were on top, that’s the time to keep squeezing them.
“We let them play too much in periods and we definitely let him off the hook.
“It’s a disappointing goal [De Jong’s winner] to concede.
“I want them players to be accountable and to put others to account, but then again, the cross got deflected.
“Brandon [Williams] has been a bit unlucky and Victor [Lindelof] just gets caught with a ball looping over him after that deflection.
“So I think that was just a bit of frustration.”

Solskjaer continued by saying he trusts his squad to impress next season – but will look to dive into the “strange” transfer market this summer.
The United boss said: “[The players] need to keep improving, keep doing what they’ve done every single day and they’ve worked so hard, with the right attitude and mentality.
“We need to strengthen the squad depth because it’s going to be a long season.
“We’re going to keep pushing and keep demanding more of the players that we have.
“But still, we’re looking to improve and it’s a strange one.

“The league starts very quickly, but then the [transfer] market is open for so long.
“So we’ve got to be both good, smart and clever.
“It’s only going to be a couple of weeks’ rest until we get going again.
“We have to dust ourselves down, make sure that we are ready and fresh to go.”

Man Utd had 46 shots against Sevilla and Copenhagen in Europa League mini-league… and only scored two penalties

MANCHESTER UNITED’S poor finishing cost them tasting Europa League glory this season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side fell to a 2-1 defeat to Sevilla in their semi-final clash in Cologne.

But just like in the previous round against Copenhagen, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side missed a whole host of chances to kill the game off.
In these two games, United had FORTY-SIX shots at goal – but have only two scored penalties from Bruno Fernandes to show for it.
Solskjaer was desperate to end the season with some silverware to add to an impressive third-placed finish in the Premier League.
But it is perennial Europa league winners Sevilla who progress through to the final back in Cologne.

Watching the two games, you wouldn’t have thought Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood have shared 62 goals between them.
Speaking to BT Sport about the missed opportunity of silverware, Solskjaer said: “It’s one of them if you take chances you win comfortably – not always the case in football.
“We had moments in spells in both halves where we should have scored a few.
“We have a young team – some spells showed that this group of players will have to learn and get some consistency in their play.

“When we get the ball down and create chances it’s scintillating at times.
“It’s disappointing we didn’t score because we’ve got players with that quality.”

Their keeper did very well, but the quality we have we should have scored
    Bruno FernandesManchester United Midfielder

And Fernandes, the only player to score in both games, added: “[It was] more than a positive start. We played a great game and created a lot of chances.
“But in football it’s not enough – we missed a lot in front of goal.
“We are not satisfied about this because we wanted to go through.
“Their keeper did very well, but the quality we have we should have scored.”
The disappointment could see United push on with their pursuit of Jadon Sancho.
His club Borussia Dortmund insist the 20-year-old winger is going nowhere, but a bid in the excess of £100million could change that.
And United legend Paul Scholes believes United would have beaten Sevilla if they had Sancho in the team.
“We know all this Sancho stuff is going on, they need to spend more money.
“If they want to win trophies, they’ve got to start spending the money.

“They created chances tonight but if you think of Sancho in that team tonight I think United are scoring.”
Scholes believes United lack quality depth in their squad, a problem that can only be solved by spending big cash on star names.
And the 45-year-old has urged old team-mate Solskjaer to keep on pushing, explaining that quality players like Sancho are the only ones who can lift United past their current state and help them win finals.

Man Utd fume as Sevilla WRONGLY awarded throw-in in build-up to goal… but VAR cannot overrule as club crash out

MANCHESTER UNITED were left fuming after they crashed out of the Europa League thanks to a controversial equaliser.
Sevilla levelled after the Spanish club were wrongly awarded a throw-in in the build-up to their equalising goal.

    3

The ball clearly flicked off the hair of Sevilla’s Jules Kounde

And despite VAR being present for the Europa League semi-final clash, it is not used for those decisions.
The ball clearly flicked off the hair of Sevilla defender Jules Kounde, but the assistant flagged the decision in the Spaniards’ favour.
And as often happens in football, a goal was the result of the wrong decision.
Former Liverpool midfielder Suso was the man who swpet the ball home at the far post to tie the game up at 1-1, finishing a cross from impressive Chelsea target Sergio Reguilon.

The likes of Paul Pogba and Harry Maguire protested to referee Felix Brych, but the goal stood.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was not impressed with the decision either.
He said: “It was a throw-in – 100 per cent, but when you don’t get it you can’t stop.
“You know it’s our throw-in but it ends up on other side of pitch at the other end [and they cross it for the goal].”

The Norwegian added: “It’s one of them if you take chances you win comfortably – not always the case in football.
“We had moments in spells in both halves where we should have scored a few.
“We have a young team – some spells showed that this group of players will have to learn and get some consistency in their play.
“When we get the ball down and create chances it’s scintillating at times. The keeper had a fantastic game. It’s disappointing we didn’t score because we’ve got players with that quality.”
United fans took to social media to slam the decision.
Aaran Murphy tweeted: “Ref is terrible should’ve been our throw in.”
Avinash Raina believes VAR SHOULD be able to intervene, posting: “Why on earth is Sevilla’s goal given?!?!
“To begin with, it was Manchester United’s throw in! Why wasn’t this checked with the VAR team?”
Hortjur Halldors was similarly angry with the decision, but also with United’s defence.
He wrote: “Okay our defence was absolute crap in the goal but man that ref is having a field day.

“Our throw in. Kounde touched the ball.”

Martial, Rashford and Co give Man Utd spades of attacking flair… but they lack the end product Sancho would bring

MANCHESTER UNITED’S attacking prowess is like a starter and main course of a meal, without the dessert.
Some of the build up play by the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood is simply mouthwatering.

    3

    3

Marcus Rashford will also be gutted at not finding the back of the netCredit: EPA
But there is a distinct lack of sweetness – in this case goals.
Yes, Martial has netted 23 times this season, Rashford 22 and Greenwood 17 in all competitions.
But the first two could be in Cristiano Ronaldo hauls of goals for this season if they had taken all their chances.
Whether it’s been heroic defending, losing balance at the vital time or a dodgy decision, United have struggled to really kill off opponents.

    3

Jadon Sancho, heavily linked with United, rarely fluffs his chancesCredit: Getty Images – Getty
We saw it against Copenhagen in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
Yes, the Danes’ keeper Karl-Johan Johnsson had an inspired game, but all three United strikers should have netted in normal time of that game.
And again tonight in the 2-1 loss to Sevilla, everything in the build-up was perfect at times, but that killer instinct just wasn’t there.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side should have been home and hosed at half-time against perennial Europa League success-stories Sevilla.

But all they had to show for a host of chances created was a penalty, their 22nd of the season, scored once agains by Bruno Fernandes.
    COOL CUSTOMER SANCHO
Martial was labelled a £100million player by United legends Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves after that Copenhagen game and likened to a Ferrari.
But to really be at that level, he needs to repeat Ronaldo’s 37 goals, Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski’s incredible 54 and Lazio ace Ciro Immobuile’s 37.
One player who shows all the coollness of those player when it comes to taking his chances could be winging his way to Old Trafford.
United are heavily linked with bringing in England star Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund this summer.
The 20-year-old’s development at Borussia Dortmund has been nothing short of sensational – Manchester City must be raging at letting him leave so easily.
Sancho has netted 20 goals this season, and in this United team who create so much you could see him adding another 10 to that.

If Sancho joins that would mean Rashford, Martial and Greenwood competing for the other two slots.
If that competitions doesn’t tell them to take their chances then nothing will.

Bruno Fernandes rows with Victor Lindelof on pitch after dodgy defending lets unmarked De Jong score Sevilla’s winner

BRUNO FERNANDES and Victor Lindelof had a blazing row on the pitch after Sevilla’s winner in their Europa League semi-final.
Fernandes tore into the Swedish centre-back after his sloppy defending allowed the LaLiga side to go 2-1 up with just 12 minutes remaining.

    2

Victor Lindelof and Bruno Fernandes had a blazing row on the pitch during the Europa League semi-final

    2

The argument erupted after Lindelof’s shoddy defending let Sevilla in to score the winner

Sevilla held on to win and knock United out of their third semi-final of the season.
Luuk de Jong was left totally unmarked in the United box as he ran onto a cross from the right and poked past De Gea.
It was flat-footed and out-of-position Lindelof who took the brunt of the blame.
Andd Portuguese star Fernandes wasted no time in telling him what he thought.

Close up footage showed Fernandes gesticulating and shrugging at Lindelof.
But rather than apologise for his shoddy defending, the under-fire centre-back fired back in aggressive fashion.
He got right up in Fernandes’ face and was seen shouting some pretty angry – yet unrecognisable – words.

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did not lay the blame on Lindeloff, but admitted the defending was far from good enough.

He told BT Sport: “We should have stopped the cross, we should have cleared the ball when it came into the box.”
While Fernandes, speaking after full-time, played down the row and echoed his boss, insisting the whole team had to iron out mistakes.
Asked about the row, United’s goalscorer on the night said: “It’s normal when you concede.
“It’s not about me or Victor. What happened between me and Victor is normal.
“It will happen many more times in football. We need to see the mistakes everybody did and improve.”

United legend Paul Scholes was critical of Solskjaer’s side’s defending. He said: “You have to say the second goal was shocking. You can almost blame the entire back four.
“Lindelof and Maguire were past the near post and there is only one centre-forward.
“Lindelof’s body angle is all wrong. For me, Lindelof is the biggest problem.”
