How Man Utd could line-up against PSG with Maguire and Cavani ruled out but Telles and Van de Beek to start

MANCHESTER UNITED take on Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night in the French capital as they begin their Champions League campaign.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will likely have one eye on Saturday’s huge Premier League clash with Chelsea.

    2

How Man Utd could line-up to take on PSG on Tuesday

But the Man Utd chief will send out his best available XI to take on the reigning Ligue 1 champions at the Parc des Princes.
Edinson Cavani, who has finally completed his period of self-isolation following his deadline-day transfer, will NOT make the XI against his old team.
The Uruguayan legend, 33, left PSG on a free earlier in the summer but was left in Manchester as his new pals flew to France in order to get up to match fitness.
Harry Maguire has also been left at home after calls to be rested amid a horror run of form – despite playing and scoring in the win over Newcastle.

Mason Greenwood also misses out, having not been present for the Toon victory with an unspecified injury.
However, Anthony Martial is free to play having been suspended for the game at St James’ Park after his scuffle with Erik Lamela in the 6-1 drubbing by Tottenham a fortnight earlier.
Solskjaer will now likely start Martial up front with Marcus Rashford on the left-wing.
With Greenwood not fit enough to reclaim his spot on the right-wing, Juan Mata, Daniel James and youngster Facundo Pellistri – all in the squad – will fight for his spot.

    2

Another way Solskjaer could line-up his troops for the PSG game

In midfield, Donny van de Beek is likely to start alongside Scott McTominay in the deeper midfield roles.
With Bruno Fernandes likely to continue in his favoured No10 role, that means Paul Pogba could be left on the bench yet again.
In goal, Dean Henderson could continue his new role as cup goalkeeper having played in all of United’s Carabao Cup games so far this season.
With Maguire out, Victor Lindelof is set to start alongside Eric Bailly in the heart of defence.
Alex Telles could replace Luke Shaw to make his Man Utd debut, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the right-back spot.
Man Utd take on PSG on Tuesday October 20 at the Parc des Princes, with kick-off 8pm.

Gary Neville REFUSED to pay £14.95 to watch Man Utd win over Newcastle on Sky Box Office after slamming club over tweet

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Gary Neville has revealed he refused to pay £14.95 to watch the club’s 4-1 win at Newcastle on Saturday.
The 45-year-old – who blasted the Red Devils for joking about fans not being allowed into St James’ Park prior to kick-off – instead followed the match on Sky Sports News.

    1

Neville stated that he did not pay £14.95 to watch the encounter, though he did show his delight at the club’s victory by posting a selfie of him with a glass of wine.

During the latter stages of the match, the former Valencia gaffer uploaded the boozy snap, leading Jamie Carragher to ask: “So you paid the PPV? Thought you were against it @GNev2.”
To which Neville commented: “Sky Sports News James.”
He then followed this up by tweeting out a selfie of him watching Sky Sports News, showing United leading Newcastle 3-1, before Marcus Rashford scored in the 96th minute.

But fans have been left unconvinced that Neville did not watch the game, as they pointed out a reflection in his wine glass that appeared to show the match being played.
One eagle-eyed supporter said: “Gary what about the reflection of the game in the glass?”
Another messaged: “Say you stream illegally with your chest.”
A third added: “Gary it’s OK we all searched live football stream.”

Meanwhile one quipped: “Admit it you’re illegally streaming it.”
Neville also poked fun at Carragher on Saturday after Liverpool had a dramatic winner against Everton chalked off by VAR.
Carragher tweeted a number of laughing face emojis, before quickly posting ‘delete, delete, delete’ after VAR judged Sadio Mane to be offside.
His Sky Sports colleague revelled in his misery, as he uploaded a smug selfie after the Merseyside derby ended in a draw.

Watch Javier Hernandez’s horror miss from just yards out as LA Galaxy fans turn on ex-Man Utd star

EX-MANCHESTER UNITED striker Javier Hernandez missed a sitter for LA Galaxy and their fans were NOT happy.
The Mexican blazed over from six yards after Boca Juniors loanee Cristian Pavon had put it on a plate for him during Galaxy’s MLS clash with Vancouver Whitecaps.

The teams were drawing 0-0 in the 84th minute when the chance presented itself.
And it did not take long for fans of the MLS club to get on the 32-year-old’s back.
Winger Pavon did well to create space on the right before whipping a perfect ball across the six yard box.

It found Hernandez, 32, at the far post and although he managed to connect with his left foot, the ball ballooned very high and very wide much to the disgust of Galaxy fans.

Replying to the footage on Twitter, Mario uploaded a picture of a clown and wrote: “Remember a year ago when everyone was hyping him up.
“This guy has not done anything at all.”
Another added: “Ffs man, Chicharito is so s***. You simply CAN’T miss those chances.”
Arsenal fan JKA tried to stand up for the ex-West Ham flop and wrote: “That is not an easy chance to finish, balls bobbling, he’s running at pace, even the best miss.”

    3

But Mr M was having none of it and replied: “A rookie from the reserves came off the bench in the 85th minute and scored from this exact pass to win the game.”
Kai Koreniuk, 22, came on in the 87th minute before scoring the winner in the 90th.
The game finished 1-0 to Galaxy but it was not enough to lift them off bottom place in the Western Conference.
Mexican international Hernandez played for Man Utd for five years between 2010 and 2015 but he was loaned to Real Madrid for the final season – 2014-15.

He had a successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen from 2015-17 before a move to West Ham.
But he failed to recapture his Bundesliga form in East London and is not remembered fondly by Hammers fans.
The Irons managed to offload him to Sevilla last summer but after just one goal in nine LaLiga outings, Chicharito made the switch to LA on 21 January this year.
He has failed to score in eight MLS appearances since the move.

A rookie from the reserves came from the bench on the 85th minute and scored from this exact pass to win the game.

Edinson Cavani trains with Man Utd team-mates for first time after quarantine ends in time to face old club PSG

MANCHESTER UNITED new boy Edinson Cavani trained with his team-mates for the first time on Sunday.
The Uruguayan finished a two-week quarantine period on Saturday and was hoping to make his United debut against his old club Paris Saint-Germain.

Cavani signed an eye-watering £200,000-a-week contract on deadline day after his PSG contract expired this summer.
But due to Covid-19 rules, he had to lock himself away for 14 days after his move to England.
That meant he missed out on United’s impressive 4-1 win at Newcastle on Saturday.

But he was put through his paces at Carrington yesterday – however, he and Harry Maguire were left out of the squad for the Paris trip.

United head to Paris for the Group H clash in what is their first European game of the season.
Cavani would have felt “beautiful emotions” if he made his debut against his former team where he spent seven seasons between 2013 and 2020.
He said before being left out: “I am going to experience an exceptional moment, that nobody thought would happen.
“It will be an incredible thing, beautiful emotions.”

Cavani’s former team-mate Kylian Mbappe will be hoping to build on his strong start to the campaign as he looks to push PSG one step further in Europe.
And the French superstar said he will not hold back when facing his old strike partner.
PSG were beaten in the Champions League final by Bayern Munich in August but will be optimistic their golden boy, who has netted four times already this season, can take them all the way this time round.

Five formations Man Utd could use to fit Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles in with Solskjaer ripping up plans

AFTER a slow start, Manchester United ended the summer transfer window with a bang.
With just the £40million signing of Donny van de Beek going into deadline day, fans were rightfully worried.

    6

But, in the final hours of the window, United landed both Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles – as well as youngsters Amad Diallo and Facundo Pellistri.
Now, the challenge for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is how to fit both Cavani and Telles into his team – starting with the Champions League clash at Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night.
The Man Utd chief already has difficulty getting Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek into the team together.
And now he must figure out how to get Telles and Cavani into his XI – which could mean completely tearing up his plans and starting from scratch.

Immediately after lockdown, United went on an incredible run of wins, inspired by Solskjaer’s 4-2-3-1 formation, with Fernandes floating behind the striker in the No10 role.
But so far this season, it’s been a mixed bag for Solskjaer – with a formation change possibly on the horizon.
We take a look at FIVE ways United could line-up in 2020-21 in order to get the best out of Cavani and Telles.
    4-2-3-1

    6

How Man Utd could line-up in a 4-2-3-1
IT could be Solskjaer believes the two new-boys could fit into his current system.

In the 4-2-3-1, Telles would come in for Luke Shaw and Cavani would replace Anthony Martial as the sole striker.
Martial could be shunted out left – where he has spent much of his United career – but that would force Marcus Rashford either onto the right wing or the bench.
Fernandes would play just off Cavani in the No10 role, with Mason Greenwood likely to start on the right wing.
In midfield, Van de Beek would likely keep Pogba out of the team, with the more defensive-minded Scott McTominay holding down the fort.
David De Gea appears to be Solskjaer’s No1 – at least for Premier League games.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire would join Telles in a new-look, first-choice back-four.

    4-3-3

    6

How Man Utd could line-up in a 4-3-3
IN this formation, arguably the most-popular in world football at present, the defence would look the same.
Telles would again start as a traditional left-back.
And Cavani would instead have three central midfielders feeding him the ball with no No10.
Fernandes would instead start deeper alongside Van de Beek – both of whom would roam more freely than McTominay.
Rashford and Greenwood are the most-likely starts on the wing, with Martial demoted to the bench.
    3-4-3 / 5-2-3

    6

    How Man Utd could line-up in a 3-4-3 / 5-2-3
THIS formation is increasing in popularity in recent seasons, since Antonio Conte enjoyed so much success with it during his time at Chelsea.
And it could work for Man Utd in 2020-21 – with Telles’ best position arguably in a left-wing-back role.
Wan-Bissaka would start on the right, with Maguire and Lindelof joined by Eric Bailly in the heart of defence.
United’s defence is their Achilles heel this season – and Maguire has proven in the past he is best-suited to playing on the left of a back-three.
Adding more bodies to the defence could allow the midfielders and forwards to attack with more freedom, rather than worrying about their defensive duties.
This formation still allows for three forwards – and plenty of width.
But the wingers – likely Rashford and Greenwood – would be able to slot in more narrowly, with Wan-Bissaka and Telles given licence to overlap on the wings.
That essentially allows for three centre-forwards, including Cavani, while in possession – but still with three central defenders providing cover.
McTominay would likely sit in front of the back-three, with Fernandes pushing forward – with Van de Beek and Pogba threats off the bench.
    3-4-1-2

    6

How Man Utd could line-up in a 3-4-1-2
A SLIGHTLY more defensive-minded version of the 3-4-3 / 5-2-3, the 3-4-1-2 could arguably be perfect for Man Utd’s personnel.
    Solskjaer could line-up with the same back-three / back-five.
But ahead of them, would be THREE central midfielders rather than two.
With United’s strongest area arguably being the centre of midfield, that plays right into Solskjaer’s hands.
In this scenario, McTominay could start alongside one of Van de Beek or Pogba – with Fernandes just ahead of them.
The Portuguese star would also provide support for a traditional front two.
With Cavani starting, United would love an injection of pace alongside – with one of Martial or Rashford proving the perfect foil.
This formation sacrifices a touch of width – relying purely on the wing-backs – but plays to United’s strength through the middle.
    4-4-2

    6

How Man Utd could line-up in a traditional 4-4-2
IT may be deemed ‘old-fashioned’ by some, but 4-4-2 would allow United to field an ultra-attacking team.
In fact, they could squeeze FOUR natural strikers into the team, with Cavani and Martial playing centrally, with Rashford and Greenwood on the wings.
This formation does sacrifice one of the central midfielders, but coul reap the rewards.
With the same back-four as in the 4-2-3-1 AND McTominay in the team, there would be plenty of defensive cover.
Fernandes could then push forward and join the what could be considered a front-four.
In this formation, though, Rashford and Greenwood would be expected to track back and help out on the defensive end.

Man Utd ‘reach Luis Gomes transfer deal’ with 16-year-old Sporting Lisbon star – dubbed next Figo – available for £14m

MANCHESTER UNITED have agreed a first refusal deal for Sporting Lisbon youngster Luis Gomes, according to reports.
The 16-year-old midfielder has been dubbed the new Luis Figo and the Red Devils look set to land him for just £14million.

    1

Man Utd have agreed a first refusal deal for Sporting Lisbon teen Luis Gomes

Gomes signed a five-year contract with the Portuguese side last week but is expected to move on to one of Europe’s elite clubs before too long.
Having signed Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcos Rojo, Bruno Fernandes and Nani from Sporting in recent years, United have a positive relationship with the Primeira Liga outfit.
And that has seen them agree a £14m deal for Gomes if Sporting decide to sell him, according to the Mirror.

Gomes has been with Sporting since 2010 when he was six and has developed at a phenomenal rate.

Atletico recently made enquiries about his availability but United have pipped them to the post.
Speaking after signing his Sporting contract last week, Gomes said: “It is a unique feeling.
“This has always been one of my great goals since I joined the academy.
“It is very good to feel that the club believes in me.

“Now I have to continue to work and fight to achieve more goals and return the confidence placed in me.
“I always dreamed that I could get here and I always want more.
“It is very good to see that it happened. It was many years and many trips. We went to many tournaments, but the effort paid off.
“One of my dreams is to reach the main team, and I will work for that.”
Portuguese legend Figo spent six seasons with Sporting before mega transfers to Barcelona and Real Madrid saw him win the Ballon d’Or in 2000.

Solskjaer’s suitability as Man Utd boss will be looked at if they lose to Newcastle with Pochettino and Allegri lined up

MANCHESTER UNITED travel to Newcastle in what is the first of seven games that will make or break United’s season – and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s managerial future.
Following a poor start to the campaign, two league defeats from three, speculation has intensified over the international break about Solskjaer’s long-term suitability for the role.

    3

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in the firing line at UnitedCredit: PA:Press Association

And, once again, we’ve seen former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino heavily linked with replacing him.
Then there is well-respected Italian Max Allegri who is out of work and seemingly looking for a way back in.
The game in the North-East is followed by crunch games against Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, RB Leipzig, Arsenal, Istanbul BaSakSehir and Everton before another pause for the international fixtures.
    Can Solskjaer afford another defeat?
United have conceded 11 league goals in three league games, their highest figure at this stage of a season for 90 years.

It’s very much ‘one game at a time’ for Solskjaer, but a defeat against Steve Bruce’s side would mean they’ve lost three of their opening four league games for the first time since 1986.
That said, United have won five successive Premier League away matches, scoring at least twice in each victory.
They have never earned six top-flight away victories in a row, not even under Sir Alex Ferguson. So, which record will it be?
Many of the players that have been on international duty have come out in support of Solskjaer.

But another showing like the 6-1 home defeat to Spurs, and the Norwegian may find that his position is untenable.
    What Solskjaer needs to do?
Captain Harry Maguire needs taking out of the firing line and resting.
The former Leicester City man looks like he needs a mental break having followed a poor start to the season with his club, with an equally worrying performance and a red card for England in midweek.

    3

Mauricio Pochettino could finally get the chance to shine at Old TraffordCredit: Reuters

Paul Pogba is another that’s under-performing and should be left out, especially when you’ve got someone as good as Donny van de Beek waiting in the wings to step in.
New number seven Edinson Cavani is unable to play this weekend, but his arrival should force Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood to find their best form and get back on the goalscoring trail.
Anthony Martial we know is suspended after his red card against Spurs.
    Verdict
Newcastle have won two of their past three Premier League home games against Manchester United and if they make it a third, then the United board might have a decision to make.
It might not mean it was the end for Solskjaer, but it would certainly feel like the beginning of the end.
Regardless of the result against Newcastle, it feels like a hurdle too far for Solskjaer, especially with Pochettino out of work and being linked with the club on a daily basis.
Solskajer has performed a miracle before, and there isn’t a United fan in the world who doesn’t want him to succeed.
Sometimes though, you have to hold your hands up and admit that you just aren’t good enough.
