Man Utd stars Fred and Tuanzebe awarded just 4/10 and 5/10 ratings against PSG by L’Equipe despite winning over fans

MANCHESTER UNITED duo Axel Tuanzebe and Fred starred in helping their team defeat PSG – but French newspaper L’Equipe was not impressed.
Tuanzebe was playing his first game for ten months and marshalled superstars Kylian Mbappe and Neymar brilliantly in a coming-of-age performance.

Yet L’Equipe, who are notoriously stingy with their match ratings, only awarded him a five out of ten.
Fred, alongside Scott McTominay, easily won the midfield battle against fomer United star Ander Herrera and ex-Everton man Idrissa Gueye.
That was demonstrated when PSG boss Thomas Tuchel hooked off Gueye at half-time.

Yet L’Equipe only awarded the Brazilian a FOUR out of ten.

In fact, despite United earning a brilliant 2-1 victory in their opening Champions League game against last-season’s finallists, only three players even managed sevens.
They were David De Gea, Victor Lindelof and Alex Telles.
Elsewhere, matchwinner Marcus Rashford, fellow scorer Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial – who scored an own goal – were all given sixes.
But the French newspaper was similarly harsh to PSG, with them splashing the word ‘unrecognisable’ on their front page.

    4

L’Equipe described PSG’s performance as ‘unrecognisable’ on their front sport page

Neymar, Mbappe and former United man Herrera all scored four.
Gueye, who failed to come out for the first half, ranked even worse with a THREE.
Only goalkeeper Keylor Navas came out with any respectability, registering a seven.
The 2-1 victory for United was well deserved according to a delighted Solskajer speaking afterwards.

    4

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was delighted with his side’s showing in France
He told BT Sport: “When you go away to a team like this against Neymar and Mbappe you have to defend well and your keeper will have to make saves.
“Axel Tuanzebe is a top defender and his first game in 10 months was testament to the quality he has.
“Bruno missed two penalties in a row but he’s not going to stop taking them – he showed focus and character.
“We know we need ten points to get through so next week’s game is very important. There are so many games.”

BT Sport’s state-of-the-art new app lets fans virtually enter Man Utd’s stadium and dressing room

BT SPORT’S new Match Day Experience is taking football fans behind the scenes at Premier League clubs – and even Rio Ferdinand is impressed.
The broadcasters are harnessing the power of 5G to deliver augmented reality offerings that puts users right into the heart of areas normally out of bounds for the public.

    6

Users will have a choice of where and how to access, then a portal will appear

    6

Soon you will be in the Man Utd dugout, ready for the big game

Simply lock in on a spot in your living room and suddenly a portal opens letting you walk into the dressing rooms at Elland Road or Old Trafford.
The user is suddenly right there in the inner sanctum of the biggest clubs in England, able to explore and get a genuine feel for what the Premier League stars experience.
Former Manchester United and England captain Ferdinand said: “The dressing room was the place where no-one was able to go so to see inside is amazing.

“Even now, I’m intrigued to look at what the changing rooms are like right now.

“I’ve been in there at Leeds, but I haven’t been in there for 15-18 years, wherever is. So it’s intriguing for me to get that opportunity to go in and have a look.
“I wanted to have it and I think fans will be the same because and even looking at things like the difference in size of the home and away changing rooms.
“There is a massive difference in like luxuriousness of a home changing compared to it away changing rooms.
“Then when you see Old Trafford, they’ve expanded the home dressing room so much and you can see the gadgets that are in there now. For a fan to be able to see in there I think is a great added value.”

    6

Fans can then get to see what the players do on match-days – under current restrictions anyway

    6

The app feature, which will start to be available to EE subscribers this month, shows content filmed behind the scenes at all the top flight grounds, including the walk out of the tunnel onto the pitch.
There is also the option to ‘Watch Together’ in a live split-screen experience with friends and families through Augmented Reality.
Fans will also be able to watch the game from any angle – with an incredible new 360-degree camera feature.
But it also involves real time stats and even a split screen function which allows pals to connect during matches while they are sat in separate homes.

    6

The Man Utd trophy room might take a bit of time out of the day
And Ferdinand says the capability to deliver real time stats will allow him to do his job as a pundit for BT Sport more easily.
He added: “There are things that bring a bit of realism to the game, like the speed with which a player runs to get on to a ball.
“You can see someone has scored a goal and then ‘oh, he’s running 21km an hour’.
“All that data I can use as a pundit now as well. Normally we outsource all this data, and you’ll be waiting for it to arrive.
“Now this is live, I get it there and then, there isn’t any waiting about.
“I get it and can put it into what I’m looking to do at half time or full time. It really makes my job a little bit easier as well.”
Match Day Experience on the BT Sport app, the UK’s most immersive sports viewing service, will be inclusive for new customers taking the Full Works iPhone plan with the new 5G iPhone. Visit ee.co.uk for more from October 16.

Man Utd star Axel Tuanzebe, who kept Neymar and Mbappe at bay against PSG, also holds Hungry Hippos world record

IT was the night Axel Tuanzebe came of age.
Faced with superstars Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, the 22-year-old defender put on his best display in a Manchester United shirt – as the Red Devils shocked PSG to win 2-1 in the Champions League.

Now, he’s at the age where he can push for a first team spot and has given boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer another option in a defence that has seemed brittle at best this season.
But Tuanzebe also has a hidden talent, away from his footballing brilliance.
Incredibly, he holds a Guinness World Record for the fastest time to clear a game of Hungry Hippos.
    HUNGRY FOR SUCCESS
Just before Tuanzebe was sent on loan to Aston Villa in 2018, he joined his Manchester United team-mates on a preseason tour in Los Angeles.

There he was asked to take part in a game of Hungry Hippos for fun.
But somehow, as an individual, he finished it in just 17.37 seconds – managing to record a world record at the same time.
For those who missed out on the famous game as a child, it features four hippos in a circle with a handful of balls in the middle.
Players each choose a hippo and need to use it to collect as many marbles as possible before they are all taken.

    COMING OF AGE PERFORMANCE
The Congo-born defender, who moved to Rochdale as a child before joining United at the age of eight, found himself frozen out at Old Trafford with the signing of Harry Maguire.
His last appearance before his defensive masterclass in Paris came back in December 2019, so he could’ve been excused for rustiness.
However, his top-class display had Solskjaer purring – with pundits including Rio Ferdinand demanding Tuanzebe should be a starter.
After the PSG game, Solskjaer said: “We know that when you go away against a team like this, against players like Neymar and Mbappe, top, top players in the world, we know we have to defend well.
“We know David De Gea will have to make a few saves. Sometimes you’ll get in a foot race with Mbappe and you’ll have to run with him and we know Axel’s qualities – he’s a top defender.
“First game in, I don’t know, 10 months or something, which is just testament to the quality he has.”

    INJURY HELL
One of the reasons Tuanzebe was MIA for United was due to a series of niggling injuries that hampered what was supposed to be his breakthrough season with the Premier League giants in the past year.
And he admitted it certainly affected how he felt emotionally.
He said: “You’re just looking at the other lads progressing, the games being played, just counting the amount of games you’re missing and getting messages left, right and centre, asking when you’re coming back and stuff.
“It’s tough in that respect, but I’ve had good people around me who have kept me going, [who] motivate me every day, and I motivate myself to know that there’s light at the end of the tunnel.
“(I’d like to say thanks) especially to the rehab and S and C [strength and conditioning] guys.
“I’m constantly with them every day, and trying to strengthen any weak parts and do general conditioning, so it’s been really good.”

Often preferring the central defensive role, the England youth international has sometimes been pushed out to right-back while he is capable of playing in the middle of park.
And he is hungry to prove his worth, telling the club’s TV channel: “Manchester has always been my home so to be amongst the lads again is great, I want to push on and show everyone I’m ready for it.”
After his display on Tuesday, he looks it.

Watch Cavani deep in conversation with Tuanzebe before Man Utd’s win over PSG as fans joke he leaked inside information

MANCHESTER UNITED fans are convinced Edinson Cavani dished the dirt on former side Paris Saint-Germain to Axel Tuanzebe prior to Tuesday’s clash.
The Red Devils beat Les Parisiens 2-1 at Parc des Princes as they kicked off their Champions League campaign with a hard-fought victory.

    5

Cavani played no part in the match as he is not yet fully match fit

And Tuanzebe was a standout performer for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side as he starred in his first game of the season.

The DR Congo-born England youth international, 22, won all his aerial battles and made a game-high seven clearances.
A clip of Cavani speaking to Tuanzebe in training has went viral, with supporters joking he leaked information about his former employers.
The duo were presumably speaking in French with Cavani spending seven years in Paris, while the language is one of three Tuanzebe can speak.

Commenting on the video, one fan tweeted: “Already loving Cavani’s positive influence in helping young players.”
Another messaged: “Experience is always important in games like this, he couldn’t play but did well to let others know.”
A third added: “I think Cavani is giving Axel tips here on how Neymar and Mbappe will come at him and didn’t the boy listen well.”
One simply stated: “Cavani already worth the 10 million agent fees that we had to pay.”

Tuanzebe’s team-mates were quick to praise the youngster after his dazzling display, as Marcus Rashford said: “I know Axel from a very very young age.
“He’s an unbelievable defender, and for me he has no problem stepping in even though he’s been out for a long time.”
David De Gea then raved: “He has been unbelievable today.

Man Utd debt soars by 133 per cent to £474m and club record £23m losses as 2019-20 financial results released

MANCHESTER UNITED lost a staggering £70million income in just three months because of the coronavirus crisis.
The Old Trafford outfit’s fourth quarter results show the impact of the pandemic on world football’s biggest money-making machine.

    2

United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward conceded the club had felt the ‘significant economic ramifications of the pandemic’.
He added: “Within that context, our top priority is to get fans back into the stadium safely and as soon as possible.”
In what was the first public nod to the furore caused by United’s involvement in drafting the Project big Picture proposals and talks about a breakaway European Super League, Woodward revealed all.
The United chief said:  “We are also committed to playing a constructive role in helping the wider football pyramid through this period of adversity, while exploring options for making the English game stronger and more sustainable in the long-term.

“This requires strategic vision and leadership from all stakeholders, and we look forward to helping drive forward that process in a timely manner.”
The latest financial figures, up to the end of June, lay bare the cost of the virus after United took up a £140m loan from Bank of America in May.
With no games in April and May because of the shutdown and only four matches played in June, broadcast income for the quarter fell by more than £25m from the corresponding period in 2019.
United also paid the price for being out of the Champions League last term, with their total broadcast revenues for the year to the end of June down more than £100m, from £241.2m to £140.2m.

Overall, revenues fell by £118.1m for the 12 month period, down to £509m from £627.1m in 2019, with £49.9m of that figure in the last quarter of the financial year.
Matchday income fell £21m over the entire year, to £89.8m, and £18.3m in the final quarter, to just £5.5m.
And while commercial revenue went up by £3.9m over the 12 months, it fell by £7.3m in the final three months as Covid-19 raged.
In a statement to investors, United pointed to the acquisitions of Edinson Cavani, Amad Diallo, Facundo Pellistri, Alex Telles and Donny van de Beek in the summer transfer windows.
There were also new contracts signed by Dean Henderson, Nemanja Matic, Scott McTominay and Brandon Williams.
The club also noted it had landed two US World Cup-winning women stars, Tobin Heath and Christen Press plus hailing ‘eight now global partnerships’ and other financial agreements.
Woodward added: “ On the pitch, we have strengthened the team over the summer and we remain committed to our objective of winning trophies, playing entertaining, attacking football with a blend of Academy graduates and high-quality recruits.”

Speaking to the club’s financial investors on a conference call, Woodward described 2019-20 as ‘one of the most extraordinary and challenging seasons in recent history’ and insisted he was ‘proud’ of United’s response.
However, he warned: “There are still big challenges and uncertainties ahead as the Coronavirus pandemic continues to disrupt our way of life across the globe.
“This disruption is clear to see in the financial results. We expect the impact to remain visible for quite some time to come.“
Tuesday night’s Champions League win at PSG has helped change the United mood that was close to despair after their 6-1 mauling by Spurs before the international break.
Woodward added: “On the field, we will never be satisfied at Manchester United unless we are winning trophies.
“While there is more hard work ahead and the path is not always smooth, we are making progress.

    2

Woodward has had his say on the ‘challenging’ 2019-20Credit: PA:Press Association
“We have a clear strategy under Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) to build a successful, committed team, with a core of home-grown talent blended with high-quality recruits, that plays fast flowing, attacking football.
“The recruits underscore our continued commitment to strengthening the squad and take our net investment in new players since summer 2019 to over £200m – more, I believe, than any other major European club over that time period.
“The bottom line is we are investing and will continue to invest to back the manager.”
Woodward also admitted the importance of the return of fans to Old Trafford and other stadiums.
He said: “While we recognize that public health must always be the priority, what is needed is consistency of approach.
“If people are allowed to sit in a plane for hours, or in the cinema, or even watch football in a cinema why not outside in a stadium environment which is professionally managed and controlled?
“If indoor concerts are allowed, why should outdoor, socially-distanced football fans be treated differently?
“Fans are the bedrock of this game and some of the inconsistencies out there are frustrating for them and for the clubs.”

Arsene Wenger reveals more details on being offered Man Utd job – but Arsenal legend still refuses to reveal when

ARSENAL’S legendary former manager Arsene Wenger was offered the job at Manchester United.
Earlier this month, the Gunners icon claimed he had a chance to take the Old Trafford gig – and now he’s revealed even more about the approach.

The 70-year-old also had talks with some of Europe’s other big clubs – including Juventus, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
And when French Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint Germain were mentioned in Wenger’s interview with the Times, he said: “I was offered that job a few times.”
Wenger also had the chance to manage the French national team but asked whether he was offered the Man Utd job as well, he responded: “Yes.”
Le Professeur’s Arsenal team were United’s biggest Premier League rivals when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge.

But he refused to be pressed on exactly when he was offered the chance to take charge.
Wenger said: “I don’t tell you that.
“I can tell you Man Utd offered me the job but I don’t tell you when.”

And now, in an interview with FourFourTwo, Wenger admitted he was approached by Old Trafford officials yet again.

    3

When asked if either Manchester club approached him, he revealed: “City never, United yes – I cannot tell you exactly when.”
Grilled as to whether he was interested, Wenger added: “No, because I was at Arsenal.
“You know, I had a real love story with Arsenal. My life is red and white.
“I felt when I came to the club that there was this special charm inside it.
“It was a good mixture between respect for tradition, respect for people, and not being scared to sometimes face unpopular judgements.”
It’s not known exactly when Wenger was offered the United job – but it’s widely believed to have been when Fergie nearly retired in 2002.

Wenger is currently Fifa’s head of global football development and says he has ‘no contact’ with Arsenal anymore – unlike Ferguson who was given a board position at United after he retired.
And despite a previous desire to get back into management, the former Monaco and Nancy boss has had a change of heart.
He said: “I’m not sure. For 40 years I did only that every day in my life.”
And he seems to be filling his newfound spare time wisely, adding: “Sport. Visiting my family and friends. Holidays. Reading a lot.
“Enjoying life but in a sensible way, because I’m a little bit drilled by 30, 40 years of discipline, you know?”

Wenger was in charge of the Gunners for 22 years, during which time he won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cup crowns.
But by the end of his reign, fans were on the Frenchman’s back after 14 years without a title with the side looking further and further away from challenging.
And he admitted he may have ‘been Arsenal boss too long’.
Wenger added: “Maybe I stayed too long… I don’t know.
“But I was committed like on the first day.
“I think I guided the club through the most difficult period in a very successful way.
“At some stage people say you’re too old, but they don’t really look at what you do.
“I served the club as much as I could.”
Wenger also confessed he used to be physically sick after Arsenal lost matches while he was at the helm.

Solskjaer reveals Scott McTominay played with ONE EYE in first half of Man Utd’s win over PSG after losing contact lens

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed Scott McTominay could only see out of one eye in the first half against Paris Saint-Germain.
The Scottish midfielder had a fine game in the French capital, easily winning the battle against old team-mate Ander Herrera and ex-Everton man Idrissa Gueye.

And it turns out the 23-year-old did it with his vision severely affected too… after losing a contact lens.
Solskjaer explained: “Scott’s [McTominay] first-half performance was even more impressive considering he only had one contact lens in.”
Gueye was hauled off at half-time, highlighting just how superior United had been in the middle of the park.

Bruno Fernandes put United ahead from the penalty spot, only after he had missed the first attempt.

The referee adjudged PSG keeper Keylor Navas to have come off his line, ordered the retake, and the Portuguese midfielder made no mistake second time round.
The sides were level in the the 55th minute when Anthony Martial – like McTominay struggling to see after he CLOSED his eyes, headed past his own keeper David De Gea.
But Marcus Rashford, just like he did two season ago in the Parc des Princes, was the matchwinner when he rifled home with five minutes remaining.
The 2-1 victory was well deserved according to a delighted Solskajer speaking afterwards.

Bruno Fernandes looks a natural leader as he passes Man Utd captaincy test with flying colours in Maguire’s absence

BRUNO FERNANDES looked surprised when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer announced he would captain Manchester United in Paris.
Yet it would not be a shock to see the Portuguese take the Red Devils armband on a more permanent basis going forward.

    2

Bruno Fernandes, as he has done since he joined United, stepped up once again when it matteredCredit: Getty Images – Getty

Leadership is something that comes naturally to the £67million midfielder – even though he is only 26.
Back in February 2019, he took over as skipper of Sporting Lisbon from ex-United winger Nani and kept it for the final year of his stay.
And he showed in the French capital he could take on the responsibility – either for good or at least for the foreseeable future while Harry Maguire focuses on clearing his name.

The England defender – who was absent on Tuesday night due to a hamstring injury – has looked like a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders this season.

The £80 million man has a Greek jail sentence hanging over his head and knows if that is not overturned then the United captaincy is not all he would lose.
His horror show against Tottenham and then that red card for the Three Lions against Denmark were proof how hard he is finding it at the moment.
At least Solskjaer knows he has the ideal man to stand in if he does need to take Maguire out of the spotlight at any stage.
To think that not long ago Paul Pogba had hopes of taking over as skipper at United – the record signing is not even getting in the starting line-up right now.

Fernandes has been a talisman ever since he first set foot in Old Trafford at the end of January.
His influence has been clear right from the off and he has not been afraid to tell team-mates when they need a word in their ear.
He also has high standards and despite a quiet start to the season, he has started to look much more like his old self in the last two games.
And his unflappable temperament was evident here too.

    2

Bruno Fernandes has become irreplaceable for UnitedCredit: EPA
It would have been easy for him to pass on the responsibility after seeing Keylor Navas save his penalty – on the back of his miss at Newcastle on Saturday.
But he was ice cool when the ref ordered it to be retaken – scoring for the 11th time from 12 spot-kicks.
It is that sort of character that makes him an obvious choice as a future United captain. The only question is when.
