Romelu Lukaku was ‘rough diamond’ at Man Utd but now he’s polished, says Inter boss Antonio Conte – and stats prove it

INTER MILAN boss Antonio Conte has claimed Romelu Lukaku was a ‘rough diamond’ at Manchester United – but the stats show he’s been cut and polished in Italy.
The Belgian star, 27, never quite found his feet at Old Trafford and was often the target for criticism from fans.

How Man Utd Lukaku compared to Inter Milan Lukaku

Lukaku actually had a decent goals return at United, scoring 42 goals in 96 games.
But he was eventually sold for £66m by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the Norwegian looked to the future.
Little over a year since leaving England for Inter Milan, and Conte has managed to get the best out of the striker.
And recently, the Inter boss claimed Lukaku came to him as anything but the finished product.

Conte said: “Romelu is a different player to what he was a year ago.
“I always said in the past he was a rough diamond that I wanted to work with.
“He is working and you can see just the way he receives the ball, the way he moves, everything has improved.”
And the stats clearly show Lukaku is finally realising his world-class potential.

In fact, Lukaku has nearly matched his goal-scoring tally at Man Utd in just over HALF the games played in Italy.
The former Chelsea ace has scored 41 goals in a mere 58 matches at a rate of one every 117 minutes.
That’s compared to a goal every 168 minutes at Old Trafford.
Lukaku is also taking more shots per game and finding the net with a higher percentage of those shots in Milan.
On top of that, the Belgian is creating more chances, playing more passes – and at a higher rate of accuracy – while taking more touches per game.
In 2020-21, Lukaku has scored seven goals in just seven games for Inter Milan – adding three goals in just two games for Belgium.
Worryingly for defenders, he’s starting to look every inch the player United hoped he would be…

Man Utd ace Brandon Williams denies viral social media storm and threatens legal action over ‘defamatory’ allegations

MANCHESTER UNITED defender Brandon Williams has threatened legal action after ‘defamatory’ allegations about him were circulated on Twitter.
The defender, 20, has featured twice this season for the Red Devils in EFL Cup wins against Luton and Brighton.

Now Williams has instructed his legal team to ‘take action’ against unsubstantiated ‘rumours’ sweeping social media.
A statement from Williams’ representatives, as reported by the Manchester Evening News, reads: “Brandon Williams is aware of rumours circulating on Twitter.
“Brandon vehemently denies any wrongdoing whatsoever.

“The allegations posted on Twitter are false and defamatory. We have urgently raised these matters with Twitter.

“Brandon has instructed his legal team to take the action that they think necessary.
“We will not hesitate to bring proceedings against those who choose to repeat the false and defamatory allegations.”
Williams enjoyed a real breakthrough season last year as he often got the nod at left-back ahead of Luke Shaw.
But this campaign could prove trickier to secure a spot in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting XI.

The Premier League giants brought in Porto full-back Alex Telles for £15.3m on transfer deadline day.
Williams has featured 38 times for United in all competitions, making his first-team debut on September 25, 2019, as a substitute in an EFL Cup match against Rochdale.
He received his first call-up to the England U21 squad earlier this month and played in a 3–3 draw against Andorra on October 7. More

Man Utd to make Dayot Upamecano transfer move and can steal RB Leipzig defender for just £38m due to release clause

MANCHESTER UNITED will reportedly look to activate the release clause of RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano next summer.
The 22-year-old was heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford during the latest transfer window, but he instead signed a new deal with the Bundesliga side.

RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano is a target for Manchester United next year

SunSport reported earlier this month how the Red Devils were still keen on luring the centre-back away from Germany.

And now the Times claim United will look to bring Upamecano to England at the end of the season.
It’s reported that he has a release clause of around £38million that will become active next summer.
While £38m appears relatively cheap for a top centre-back, United could have signed the France international for just £700,000 from Valenciennes in 2015, but refused to offer more than £500k.

    SEE HIM UPA CLOSE
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is understood to be desperate for a new defender to partner Harry Maguire after deciding Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly cannot be trusted.
The Norwegian revealed this week he is looking forward to seeing Upamecano in action with the player set to feature against United in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Speaking ahead of the game with RB Leipzig, he said: “There are always rumours and speculation about good players for Manchester United.
“I’ve always tried to respect that they are players for other teams and don’t want to comment on every player that we are linked to.

“But since he’s playing against us tomorrow I know he’s a very good player so we can see him close up tomorrow.”
United are believed to face competition from Liverpool in the race to secure Upamecano’s services.
With Virgil van Dijk out with a knee injury, rumours have circulated that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp could turn to the former Red Bull Salzburg star.

Man Utd and Chelsea top league table of youth academy kids currently playing in Premier League as top 20 teams revealed

MANCHESTER UNITED have the best youth system in the world when it comes to youngsters making the grade in the Premier League.
The Red Devils have long been renowned for their incredible academy, churning out a host of future stars, including the Class of 92.

Clubs with the most youth products currently playing in the Premier League, either with them or elsewhere

Just last season, the club brought-up an incredible milestone, as they played their 4,000th consecutive game with an academy product in the match-day squad.
But even in the present day, United have the most-prolific youth ranks.
Incredibly, there are currently 18 Old Trafford kids starring in the Premier League – either with them or at rival clubs, according to bettingodds.
That’s four more than the next-best club, Chelsea, with 14.

United have eight players in their current squad who made it through the youth ranks with ten more playing elsewhere.
Marcus Rashford is the headline act, but Brandon Williams, Dean Henderson, Jesse Lingard, Mason Greenwood, Scott McTominay and Teden Mengi are all in the first-team squad this season.
The only other club with eight academy products in their current senior squad are West Ham, including the likes of Mark Noble and Declan Rice.
The Hammers sit joint-fourth in the overall standings, with 11 academy products spread across the Premier League.

Each PL team’s most-valuable academy product

    Arsenal – Bukayo Saka (£36m)
Aston Villa – Jack Grealish (£40.5m)
    Brighton – Lewis Dunk (£24.3m)
    Burnley – Dwight McNeil (£22.5m)
    Chelsea – Mason Mount (£40.5m)
Crystal Palace – Wilfried Zaha (£45m)
    Everton – Tom Davies (£14.4m)
    Fulham – N/A
    Leeds – Kalvin Phillips (£19.8m)
    Leicester – Harvey Barnes (£25.2m)

    Tottenham – Harry Kane (£108m)
West Brom – Romaine Sawyer (£2.88m)
West Ham – Declan Rice (£49.5m)
    Wolves – N/A

Southampton (13) sit ahead of the Irons, with Arsenal level on 11 and Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham all on 10.
Leeds’ academy has churned out nine top-flight stars, with Benfica and Ajax the first foreign clubs on the list, both turning out EIGHT Premier League stars apiece.
Benfica have churned out the likes of Man City duo Ederson and Bernardo Silva, while Ajax have given the league Donny van de Beek and Steven Bergwijn amongst others.
Other non-Premier League sides to have players from their academies currently starring in the top-flight include Nottingham Forest (7), Sporting Lisbon (7), Barcelona (6) and Charlton (6).
At the other end of the spectrum, Wolves and Fulham both have ZERO academy products in their current first-team squad.
In terms of nations, England understandably lead the way in terms of academy products in the Premier League.
No fewer than 251 top-flight players graduated from English clubs.
France come second on 44, with Spain (31), Brazil (25), Portugal (23) and Holland (19) completing the top five.

PL clubs with own youth products in current senior squad

Man Utd new-boy Van de Beek feels like another Veron – a player they didn’t need and just a cheap Grealish alternative

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER’S reluctance to start £40million summer signing Donny van de Beek has raised questions throughout Europe.
More than that, though – it has made Manchester United’s loyal fanbase question whether or not the United manager wanted him in the first place.

Van de Beek is quickly becoming Man Utd’s new Juan Sebastian VeronCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd

In 37 appearances in all competitions last season for Ajax, Van de Beek registered ten goals and 11 assists.
The season before he found the back of the net 17 times and assisted on 13 occasions.
People on social media have moaned that it’s a long season and that he’ll get his chance.
But this United is inconsistent and against Chelsea at the weekend, Solskjaer’s side were crying out for something different.

The week before during the 4-1 win at Newcastle, Van de Beek showed a glimpse of what he is capable of.
Sent on in the 76th minute and with the score at 1-1, it was the Dutchman’s clever play in the build-up to Bruno Fernandes’ goal that helped open up the Toon midfield.
That performance was followed by a short run out as a substitute in Paris in the Champions League, before back to looking dejected from the stands last Saturday tea-time as an unused bench-warmer.
The best way for a player to gain form and consistency is through playing matches.

United aren’t on a ridiculously good run, so fans are quite rightly asking why he hasn’t started more.
It felt a strange move when he joined – not because he lacked quality but because in Paul Pogba and Fernandes, United already have two highly-talented players who operate in his preferred position.
Van de Beek’s failure to start a Premier League game also hasn’t gone unnoticed in his home country.
Holland legend Marco van Basten believes the 23-year-old shouldn’t have joined United and instead chosen a club where he would be playing more regularly.
Speaking to Dutch TV channel Ziggo Sport, Van Basten said: Donny shouldn’t have gone to United.
“When you’re a good player you want to play every week.”
And it was a view shared by former United defender Patrice Evra who posted on Twitter: “Why did we buy Van de Beek?”

Van de Beek has looked good in his brief run-outs – so why is Solskjaer letting him rot on the bench?
So was Van de Beek a Solskjaer signing or was he given to him by United’s recruitment team to keep fans happy?
At the moment it feels like another Juan Sebastien Veron moment.
A player United didn’t quite need, and a cheaper alternative to say, Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, who could have floated in nicely from the right or left.
There may well be a greater plan here and Van de Beek may have been told to bide his time until Pogba moves on, either in January or more likely next summer.
But, as we saw during the last window, there are no guarantees.
At the moment, United have a talented player who looks disillusioned, who doesn’t fit the starting XI and who in all honesty should probably start to think about his own exit strategy.
That is, unless he is given more opportunities to start – beginning against RB Leipzig on Wednesday evening.

How Man Utd could line-up against RB Leipzig with Edinson Cavani free to make first start while Tuanzebe could be axed

MANCHESTER UNITED host RB Leipzig in their second Champions League game of the season on Wednesday night.
And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a real selection dilemma on his hands for the game.

How Man Utd could line-up for their game with Leipzig

In last week’s tournament opener, the Man Utd boss – fearful of Paris Saint-Germain’s front-three – sent out a back-five.
Axel Tuanzebe thrived on the right-side of the central trio, keeping superstar Kylian Mbappe uncharacteristically quiet.
Despite his stunning performance, he was left out of the team for the 0-0 draw with Chelsea at the weekend, with Solskjaer reverting to his preferred 4-2-3-1.
Despite Leipzig posing a tough test, Solskjaer will be more confident – and, playing at home, too – is more likely to send out an attacking team.

With that in mind, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw are likely to start in front of David De Gea.
In midfield, Scott McTominay and Fred have been Solskjaer’s preferred deeper pivot.
Over £130million’s worth of talent in Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek have been left on the bench, along with Nemanja Matic.
Bruno Fernandes will surely continue in his No10 role.

Another way Solskjaer could send out his team vs Leipzig

Anthony Martial is allowed to play, with his suspension purely domestic.
However, Edinson Cavani will be hoping to make his first start for the club having nearly scored with his first touch against Chelsea.
Marcus Rashford will likely start on the left wing, with Juan Mata, Daniel James and Mason Greenwood vying for the right spot.
Should Solskjaer opt to go with his 3-4-3 /5-2-3 formation, Tuanzebe would surely slot in alongside Lindelof and Maguire.
Wan-Bissaka would push forward to right-wing-back, with Alex Telles likely to be preferred to Shaw in this formation.
The United chief may opt for a more attacking midfield with five defenders in the team – offering the likes of Pogba and Van de Beek hope.
Odion Ighalo will also be hoping to feature, but is way down the list of striking talent at Old Trafford this season.
Man Utd host RB Leipzig at Old Trafford on Wednesday October 28, with kick-off 8pm.

Man Utd ‘make Erling Haaland No1 transfer target with Solskjaer still keen on Jadon Sancho in Dortmund double swoop’

MANCHESTER UNITED have reportedly put Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland to the top of their shortlist.
The Premier League giants chased his team-mate Jadon Sancho all summer, but failed to sign the England international.

Now, according to The Athletic, boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘still has designs on enhancing his centre-forward options’.
And despite bringing in goalscoring legend Edinson Cavani on a free, Haaland is now the main transfer target.
It is reported that although ‘United’s negotiations with Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola may have ended fractiously’ there are still ‘bridges’ between Solskjaer and the player.

Solskjaer had told United that he wanted to be reunited with Haaland having worked with the player at Molde.

But the Red Devils didn’t agree with there being a release clause in the deal, and the Norwegian ended up moving to Dortmund from RB Leipzig.
The 20-year-old has scored seven goals in eight games in all competitions for the German giants this season.
United will be hoping any prospective move for Haaland ends better than their failed pursuit of Sancho.
Borussia Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke says United ‘misjudged’ their chase of the former Manchester City youth in the summer.

But the German giants’ CEO admitted the England winger, 20, is ‘not unsellable’.
Dortmund had set United officials a deadline of August 10 to meet their £108million valuation.
But Old Trafford bosses played it all-too casually and waiting until much later in the transfer window in order to attempt to secure a cut-price fee.
United had offered £70m plus add-ons for Sancho – but Dortmund remained firm all summer, with the winger committing his future to the club, despite reportedly being keen on a move back to England.

How Man Utd could line-up with Adama Traore as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer eyes Wolves ace to link-up with Rashford and Martial

MANCHESTER UNITED could be set to splash the cash in 2021 in their bid to become Premier League title contenders.
Fans were disappointed with the club’s summer transfer business as they failed to bring in a right winger or centre-back.

This is how Manchester United could start next season if they signed Adama Traore from Wolves

And they were unsuccessful in their quest to prise Jadon Sancho away from Borussia Dortmund in what was their best chance to sign him.

Even though the transfer window is closed, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have been linked with a host of players – including Wolves ace Adama Traore.
Seen as an alternative to Sancho, the Red Devils are one of five clubs that are claimed to be ready to make a move for the 24-year-old.
However it has been said that Wolves will not part ways with Traore unless they receive a fee in the region of £90million.

United are understood to remain interested in RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano, 21, who has a bargain £36.5m release clause in his contract next summer.
And United could also look to replace the ageing Nemanja Matic, with Borussia Monchengladbach defensive midfielder Denis Zakaria, 23, being eyed up.
Should United sign all their targets, Solskjaer will know he has a side truly capable of winning silverware.
David De Gea would likely keep his place between the sticks ahead of Dean Henderson.

Meanwhile Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Alex Telles could slot in as the full-backs, with Upamecano to partner Harry Maguire.
Should Paul Pogba stay, he would play alongside Zakaria in the middle of the pitch, with Bruno Fernandes to be deployed in an advanced role.
Traore would then start as United’s right winger, with Marcus Rashford on the opposite flank.
Anthony Martial would surely lead the line, though Mason Greenwood could also be an option for Solskjaer.
