Solskjaer not right for Man Utd job, claims Deeney as he says ‘I don’t think anyone else would get the time he’s got’

TROY DEENEY believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is NOT the right man for the Manchester United job.
And the Watford striker turned Sun Sport columnist says nobody else ‘would have got the time’ the Norwegian has.

Solskjaer took charge of his 100th match yesterday but the Red Devils produced a disappointing display as they slipped to a 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang bagged a penalty as the Gunners won at Old Trafford for the first time since 2006.
The result means United are winless in four home matches this season for the first time since 1972/73.
Former captain Roy Keane, an ex-team-mate of Solskjaer, blasted the performance after the game and claimed he did ‘not see men’ in the United side.

And Deeney believes the Irishman got it spot on as he stated the club needed a new manager.
Asked on Monday’s talkSPORT Breakfast if Solskjaer is the right man for the job, Deeney said: “If you had to look back over 100 games, you’d probably say ‘no’.
“I don’t think anybody else with that record would get the length of time he’d done.
“He seems like a lovely guy, I don’t know him, it’s not personal, I just don’t think he demands the respect off the other players.

“You listen to Roy Keane and the rant he had afterwards which was epic as always, I just don’t see how the players respect Solskjaer, you don’t see much change.”
Deeney continued: “Other than Greenwood, Rashford has started coming into his own, who would you really say has improved after him? That would be the question I’d ask.
“I think Pogba takes a lot of criticism and takes a lot of the blame away from a lot of people at Man United, but there were so many average performances yesterday in a game of that magnitude, why is that happening?
“They’ve just come off a couple of wins in the Champions League where everyone was saying they were ‘back to the United of old’, but you don’t see anything that would suggest they’re going to continue it for five or six weeks.”

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blasts ‘sloppy’ side for ‘not turning up’ in defeat against Arsenal

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER has blasted his Manchester United side for their “sloppy” performance in the 1-0 defeat against Arsenal.
The Red Devils yet again disappointed at Old Trafford as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s penalty deservedly secured three points for the Gunners.

Manchester United were second best at Old Trafford as they lost 1-0 against Arsenal – and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer criticised his ‘sloppy’ team

United are yet to win any of their home games at the Theatre of Dreams this term – picking up just one point out of 12 on offer.

The club now sit in 15th spot in the Premier League table, and Solskjaer has taken a swipe at his squad for their lacklustre performance against the North Londoners.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Solskjaer said: “When you have played well you think you can take your foot off the pedal, but that is not how it works because this was a big game against a good team and you have to be absolutely spot on with everything.
“If you are slightly late for a tackle they get away from you and you give a foul away.

“We weren’t at the races. We were too sloppy, too many passes went astray and the rotation was not there.
“Too many things that can go wrong in a game did for us today. Today we didn’t get the response we hopes for.”
He then criticised his side for failing to turn up against Arsenal in an interview with the BBC.
Solskjaer stated: “That’s football for you. It goes up and down. We didn’t turn up, especially in the first half.

“That’s what we have to address because we know these boys can be so good. We knew that this was the big game this week.
“And unfortunately in the first half we didn’t play well enough. Second half we played better, we never seemed to have to defend too much.
“But when we did have to, we were too slow and gave away the penalty.”
Before adding: “It’s for other people to judge if we’re making progress. We keep on working and we have another chance on Saturday against Everton.”

Man Utd winger Daniel James on worst run without goal for attackers in Premier League after 32-match goalless streak

MANCHESTER UNITED winger Daniel James is on the WORST scoreless streak of any attacker in the Premier League.
The Welsh winger has endured a tough time of it at Old Trafford since completing a £15million switch from Swansea last summer.

United pipped Leeds to his signature after a series of dazzling displays in Wales.
But as bettingexpert has discovered, James has gone 32 games without scoring in the top flight.
That puts him top of the tree as far as attacking players are concerned.

Close up behind is Everton ace Alex Iwobi – he has failed to hit the ground running after joining from Arsenal.

Ryan Fraser bags the third spot on the unwanted list – it is 27 games since Fraser last scored, that coming in his time with Bournemouth.
Wolves winger Adam Traore is in fourth, 25 games without netting, with Newcastle’s powerful forward Andy Carroll next up with 23 scoreless games.
James has endured tough times off the field prior to his big mvoe to United.
The 22-year-old was left heartbroken after his father died at the age of just 60.

Kevan passed away just three weeks before his transfer was completed.
James was due to be travelling with Wales for a training camp in Portugal prior to Euro 2020 qualifiers with Croatia and Hungary when he received the devastating news.
Since his big-money move from Swansea he has shown courage on and off the pitch.
But he admits the personal tragedy and making the switch to the Prem at the same time was hard to cope with. More

Sir Bobby Charlton diagnosed with dementia as wife reveals Man Utd and England 1966 World Cup winning hero’s battle

ENGLAND’S 1966 World Cup winning hero Sir Bobby Charlton has been diagnosed with dementia.
The shock news has been revealed by the former Manchester United star’s wife Norma.

Sir Bobby’s brother Jack, who died aged 85 in July, had also suffered with the disease in his later life.
Lady Norma confirmed the sad news to The Telegraph, hoping that revealing the diagnosis ‘could help others’.
Just days ago Nobby Stiles, another member of England’s World Cup winning squad, died at the age of 78.

He too had suffered with dementia in his later years.

Sir Bobby played every minute of England’s stunning World Cup triumph of 1966, with brother Jack also an integral member of the squad.
He went on the win the much-revered Ballon d’Or later that year and is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time.
The 83-year-old scored 249 goals in 758 games for Manchester United, helping them to their first ever European Cup win in 1968.
He also survived the horrific Munich Air Disaster in 1958.

At international level Sir Bobby netted 49 times in 106 games for England, despite playing in midfield.
Sir Bobby’s diagnosis will strengthen calls for the link between football and dementia to be explored more vigorously.
Stiles, Martin Peters, Jack Charlton and Ray Wilson have all died since 2018 after living with dementia.
Former England striker Shearer made a powerful BBC documentary in 2017 investigating whether there is a link between heading footballs and the brain syndrome.
Stiles’ family featured on the programme after the Manchester United icon was revealed to be suffering from advanced dementia in 2016.
Shearer believes serious questions need to be answered, especially as footballs were heavier in the past.
And he added that funding for ground-breaking research is due to run out next year.

Solskjaer backs Man Utd starlet Mason Greenwood landing second England call-up a month after raging at Southgate

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER has given the thumbs-up to Mason Greenwood getting a second England call — a month after it left him raging.
Greenwood is hoping to make Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming clashes with Ireland, Belgium and Iceland.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has no problems if Mason Greenwood is called up by England

Greenwood made his Three Lions debut against Iceland on September 5

And this time Solskjaer will have no problem if the Three Lions chief picks his teenage striker, despite his earlier run-in with Southgate.

When the Manchester United rookie was called up in September, his club boss was fuming as he insisted Greenwood, 19, needed a break.
But he has a different view now.
Solskjaer said: “It’s Gareth’s decision who he wants in his team and I had a very good conversation with him before the last get-together.

“I don’t want to interfere. It’s his choice who he picks and if he wants to pick any of my  players, they are available, of course.”
Greenwood came off the bench in the 1-0 win over Iceland but then he and Manchester City’s Phil Foden were sent home for breaking lockdown rules.
It meant they were snubbed for England’s last squad — yet Tammy Abraham, Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho were recalled for the Wales clash despite their own Covid-rule breaches.
United insiders say Solskjaer was unhappy at what he saw as harsher treatment for his own player but, publicly at least, he was not about to start another spat with Southgate.

The Red Devils manager added: “You’re not getting me into this  discussion!
“I’m full of admiration for the way Gareth is managing the England squad and think he has done a fantastic job.
“I’ll leave him to focus on his job — and me on mine.”

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer slams clubs who voted to scrap five sub rule over injury fears

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER has hit out at those Premier League clubs who voted against the use of five substitutes this season.
The rule was brought in post-lockdown but was not carried forward into this campaign as it failed to get the necessary 14 votes from the 20 clubs.

While Manchester United have a stronger squad than most Solskjaer still believes the vote will have a negative effect on players physically and mentally in what will be a congested season.
Echoing the sentiments of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Chelsea chief Frank Lampard, Solskjaer said: “I don’t understand and cannot believe the vote went against.
“We have to look after the players and this season is the most demanding season of all.
“I can see the point why clubs voted against but if you take a step back and think about these pro footballers’ mental and physical health, the only sensible solution would have been to rest a few more.

“We have seen a few injuries, Pep has spoken about it, we as managers and club med staff have to look after them and rest them.
“I would have liked to have had five subs.”
Solskjaer has had to juggle his squad of late with the demands of both the Premier League and Champions League.
He has done it to good effect of late, most notably beating both Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig in Europe.

Manchester clubs have the worst net spend in the past decade by some distance

Solskjaer added: “At the moment, we are looking like a Manchester United squad.
“I’ve got competition for places, and any successful team in the modern era of football have had the option to rest players and to rotate.
“That is the only way you can last in the most intense league in the world and with Champions League.”
After a rocky start to the season including a 6-1 defeat to Tottenham, Solskjaer has steadied the ship and believes his squad is up and running again.
The boss said: “I think any result as brutal as a 6-1 would have to get a response.
“Of course, it has been dealt with internally, we’ve tweaked a couple of things and got players fit.
“I think the manner of defeat wasn’t something we should ever have to be confronted with again.

Solskjaer is fearful of the physical and mental toll on his players in this congested fixture listCredit: EPA
“Then again, things happen in football these days and the response has been fantastic.
“We wanted to finish that off as soon as we could and move forward.
“We keep on working, developing, improving…
“It’s not up to me to say how far we’ve come but I’ve been very pleased with the response after what we did early on in the season.
“We knew we had to hang on early on but now we feel strong and competitive in every game.”
The match against Arsenal will be Solskjaer’s 100th game in charge of United.
He said: “I’m surprised it’s 100 games, it’s gone really quickly and a lot has happened, so let’s hope I can celebrate with a good result.
“Arsenal is always going to be difficult, because they are a very good team with a good manager and I’m looking forward to it.”

How Man Utd could line up against Arsenal with Solskjaer’s rampant attack headed by Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford

MANCHESTER UNITED host Arsenal in the pick of this weekend’s Premier League action.
With little rest for either side, the two giants will go head-to-head on Sunday afternoon after midweek wins in Europe.

How Man Utd could line up against Arsenal on Sunday

United battered RB Leipzig 5-0 thanks to a Marcus Rashford hat-trick off the bench, while Arsenal cruised past Dundalk with a 3-0 win.
And Rashford is set to lead the line against the Gunners along with Mason Greenwood, who also scored against Leipzig after being recalled to the team.
Anthony Martial will continue his suspension for Sunday’s game at Old Trafford.
And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could therefore be tempted to send out his Man Utd team in a 3-4-1-2 formation.

David De Gea is set to keep Dean Henderson out of the team.
And Axel Tuanzebe – so influential against Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month – could return to a back-three.
Tuanzebe would likely partner up with Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire.
However, Solskjaer, who is still without Alex Telles due to his positive Covid test, could opt to leave Tuanzebe out, with Lindelof, Maguire and Shaw comprising a back-three.

However, that would force the United captain out of his favoured spot on the left of the trio.

Another way Solskjaer could line up his stars vs Arsenal

Playing a 3-4-1-2 allows Solskjaer to play three central midfielders – two deeper and one attacking.
With the centre-mid ranks easily United’s strongest suit, that could play to their advantage.
In this set-up, Scott McTominay and Fred would likely continue their impressive partnership in the deep tandem.
Bruno Fernandes will take the starting spot at No10.
However, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek – who all played against Leipzig – will hope to sneak into Solskjaer’s starting XI.
In attack, Greenwood and Rashford could both start centrally with Martial still sidelined after lashing out at Erik Lamela in the 6-1 mauling against Tottenham.
Solskjaer could decide to send out his team in his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.
But that might not be the best way to go against Arsenal – especially with Martial injured.

Pogba and Van de Beek will be desperate to play a part in Sunday’s gameCredit: Eddie Keogh
Solskjaer may decide to play Rashford and Greenwood on the wings with Cavani central.
Or Rashford could start in the middle with Greenwood and one of Juan Mata and Daniel James on the wing.
But, in order to get his best players out on the pitch, fans on social media have been crying out for a 4-1-2-1-2 formation.
In that scenario, Solskjaer could in theory play McTominay, Pogba, Van de Beek AND Fernandes – although that’s a smidge attacking against a side as dangerous as Arsenal.
Should the boss opt 4-1-2-1-2 is the way to go, it’s likely McTominay would get the nod over Nemanja Matic as the deepest of the central four.
Fred and one of Pogba or Van de Beek would play in the middle, with Fernandes at the tip of the diamond.
This formation would again allow Rashford and Greenwood to play in their strongest central role up front.
Man Utd welcome Arsenal to Old Trafford on Sunday November 1, with kick-off at 4.30pm.

What happened to seven Man Utd kids Sir Alex Ferguson tipped for stardom in 2001 from Darren Fletcher to Luke Chadwick

SIR ALEX FERGUSON is one of the greatest football managers of all time.
From being one game from the sack at Old Trafford to transforming the club into a real European heavyweight, Fergie’s tenure will go down in history.

Sir Alex Ferguson tipped big things from a few players who never quite reached that levelCredit: Reuters

But the great man did make one or two mistakes along the way.
From signing the likes of Bebe, Eric Djemba Djemba  and Gabriel Obertan to the infamous David Beckham boot-kicking episode, there were some colourful times during his 26 years at the club.
After winning the Premier League in 2001, the boss was full of beans for the future.
Fergie tipped seven youngsters from the United youth team that he predicted were destined for greatness.

He said: “Darren Fletcher, who we hope will get over his broken leg, is good. Michael Stewart and Luke Chadwick are doing very well, and John O’Shea’s doing well too.
“There’s a young left-back called Paul Tierney who’s doing well, as is Danny Pugh.
“But there’s a young boy who has started now, he’s 16, called Kieran Richardson. He’s going to be a fantastic player.”
Some lived up to his billing but sadly others failed to make the grade. We take a look at who was a hit and who missed the mark.

    John O’Shea
Mr Versatile, O’Shea even played in goal during his time with United.
Far from being a flop, O’Shea featured 256 times for the club between 1999 and 2011.
The Irishman moved on to Sunderland where he captained the Mackems, but couldn’t stop their slide down the leagues.
O’Shea joined Reading for one season in 2018 before retiring and joining their backroom staff, where he is currently first team coach.

    Darren Fletcher
A capable midfielder who perhaps never got the credit he deserved for his workmanlike performances in the middle of the park.
Incredibly the Scot managed to play at the top level while suffering from a serious bowel condition.
He won five Premier League titles as well as the Champions League during his 342 appearances in 11 years for United.
Fletcher went on to play for West Brom and Stoke before retiring at the age of 36 at the end of last season to begin regular media appearances.

Darren Fletcher did his njob without too much fuss, and went on to become a Scotland internationalCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
    Luke Chadwick
Once talked about as Beckham’s successor, it’s fair to say Chadwick failed to live up to even half of that billing.
He did feature 38 times in United’s first-team, but that mostly came in cup competitions and coming off the bench.
Chadwick went on to play for West Ham, Stoke, Norwich, MK Dons and Cambridge United before dropping into non-league to finish his career with Soham Town Rangers.
The 39-year-old is now coaching in Cambridge’s academy but hit headlines after revealing his sadness at being mocked on the BBC quiz show They Think It’s All Over – earning an apology from presenters Nick Hancock and Gary Lineker.

Luke Chadwick never quite filled David Beckham’s boots at Old TraffordCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
    Kieran Richardson
Fergie described how Richardson would go on to become ‘a fantastic player’.
Like O’Shea and Fletcher, Richardson can look back on a pretty successful career, even making eight England appearances and scoring twice.
He made 81 appearances for United between 2002 and 2007, and went on to play for Sunderland, Fulham, Aston Villa and Cardiff.

Kieran Richardson never really made it at Old Trafford, but did make eight England appearancesCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
    Danny Pugh
Pugh had the honour of making his debut for United when he replaced the legend that is Ruud van Nistelrooy in a Champions League game against Maccabi Haifa in 2002.
But he went on to feature only another six times before being shipped out to Leeds as part of the deal that took Alan Smith to Old Trafford.
Pugh also played for Preston, Stoke, a second spell with Leeds before floating down the leagues.
He is currently coaching at Port Vale after seeing out his playing days with the League Two club.

Danny Pugh spent most of his career outside England’s top flight after leaving UnitedCredit: Action Images
    Michael Stewart
A defensive midfielder in the time when Roy Keane was bossing the opposition as well as the dressing room, Stewart was always going to find it difficult to break through.
The Scot made eight appearances for United between 1998 and 2005 before being moved on to Hibs permanently.
He joined their great rivals Hearts in 2007 where he stayed for three season, before a spell with Genclerbirligi in Turkey and his career ended in 2011 after a nine-game stint at Charlton.
Capped four times by Scotland, he later applied to be a candidate for the Scottish National Party in the 2015 general election – but failed to secure the nomination.

    Paul Tierney
After shining at youth levels at United, Tierney made only ONE first-team appearance – in the League Cup against West Brom in 2003.
The right-back joined up with Scottish side Livingston in 2005 but was flogged on to Blackpool when they were relegated from the SPL.
After a loan spell with Stockport, he was released by the Seasiders. Tierney ended his career with a three-game stint with Altincham.
