Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sweating over future as he faces Everton with Mauricio Pochettino looming large

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER is sweating on his Manchester United job as concern grows inside Old Trafford over recent performances.
The under-fire boss will definitely be in the dugout at Goodison Park tomorrow lunchtime to face Everton.

But a fourth Premier League defeat in just seven games could drop them to 17th in the table and leave Solskjaer hanging on to his job by a thread.
United insist there has been NO contact with Mauricio Pochettino, who is odds-on favourite to replace Solskjaer in his first job since being axed by Tottenham almost a year ago.
But the international break would allow the Red Devils to make the change without games getting in the way.

The board still insist they want to stick with Solskjaer, 47, believing the long-term goal to build an exciting young team is on track.
They point to last season’s third-place finish and impressive recent Champions League wins over Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig and believe he deserves time to turn things around.
However, the last two defeats against Arsenal and Istanbul Basaksehir have started to ring alarm bells in the Old Trafford board room.
Before the last international break United had also lost their opening two home games to Crystal Palace 3-1 and Spurs who thumped them 6-1.

What will also be a big concern will be the words of the players who admit they are lacking in intensity.

Manchester clubs have the worst net spend in the past decade by some distance

That was the admission of Bruno Fernandes after a shock 2-1 defeat in Istanbul on Wednesday night.
The Portuguese midfield star, 26, told MUTV: “Everything goes wrong, we did everything wrong.
“The intensity was not good since the beginning of the game.”
United were heavily criticised for the opening goal when Demba Ba was left completely free up field while United took a corner and was then released on the break.

United were criticised for leaving Ba wide open to score on Wednesday
Fernandes admitted: “We can do much better; everyone feels that. We know we can’t concede goals like that.
“But now it’s time to look at what we did wrong, to make it better in the next game.”
Fernandes knows United are falling short of expectations but he is not reading too much into the galling back-to-back losses.
He added: “I think, of course, after two defeats it’s hard to think or say something about this.
“But I think we need to look one week ago. Everyone was talking about we’re going well, we’re doing amazing games.
“We won against Newcastle, we won against Paris, we beat Leipzig.
“We draw against Chelsea – but of course the points we have in the league is not the points we want.”

Solskjaer aiming to avoid same fate as Man Utd predecessors Moyes, LVG and Mourinho on Merseyside date with destiny

THE omens for a trip to Merseyside have not been good for Manchester United managers of late.
David Moyes literally had the Grim Reaper on his shoulder at Goodison Park when he took charge of his last game on Sunday, April 20, 2014.

⚠️ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford

Paddy Power’s fancy-dress figure by the away dugout was the picture that went with the following day’s reports of the 2-0 defeat at his old stomping ground – and the official news on Tuesday morning that he was gone after ten months.
Next up Louis van Gaal and across Stanley Park at Anfield, a 2-0 Europa League defeat by Liverpool on March 10, 2016, convinced the United board a change had to be made at the end of the season.
Yes, they won the FA Cup and even if they had attained a top-four finish as well, LVG’s fate was already decided on the back of that result.

Jose Mourinho’s final act as United boss was to oversee a 3-1 defeat, again at Anfield, on December 16, 2018, just seven months after the club had finished second and reached another FA Cup final.
Now Ole Gunnar Solskjaer heads to Goodison tomorrow with his future on the line.
In a week when the world has been obsessed with polling, it is not the results from Pennsylvania and Florida that will concern the Norwegian.
It is the ones from Red Issue and United We Stand, the club’s two main online fanzines.

The first showed 66 per cent wanted Solskjaer to go, the latter, 56 per cent.

Now, while the votes where in hundreds rather than thousands, it was still not good.
Yesterday the Manchester Evening News announced that Mauricio Pochettino had been approached to replace Old Trafford legend Ole.
    Not so, claimed the club.
However, United also told the same paper Mourinho was safe, a story they duly printed on the day he was sacked.
The truth has always been that Pochettino remains the best alternative if Solskjaer fails – and the Argentine would love the job.
The question is whether 47-year-old Solskjaer is failing?
Based on the last two games against Istanbul Basaksehir and Arsenal, yes.
But based on the previous two in the Champions League, a 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain and 5-0 destruction of RB Leipzig, he is not.
And based on last season, when they finished third in the Premier League and reached three semi-finals, he is going in the right direction.
Based on their four home league games this season, he is not.

Louis van Gaal lost at Liverpool… and then lost his jobCredit: PA:Empics Sport
Before the 2-1 defeat on Wednesday to Istanbul, United had won ten straight away games for the first time in their history.
They were unbeaten in 18 away from home going back to a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool in January – their best run since 1999.
So if the board are judging him over a decent length of time and thinking long-term, which is what United still claim they want to do, then he is safe.
But for a club that holds so much store by social-media numbers, another bad performance and the pressure could be enormous to make a change with an international break to sort things out.
So you start all over again – another new manager, another change of staff, more money spent on the players he wants, rather than the ones he has inherited.
Another bright, new dawn, before it proves a false one, another corner turned before ending up back at square one.
But former Tottenham boss Poch is the answer, apparently.
He has never won a trophy as a manager and won just seven of his last 26 games in charge at Spurs before being replaced by Mourinho – the bloke United sacked before appointing Solskjaer.
The 48-year-old Argie has not had a job for two weeks short of a year now. Then he pops up on Sky this week and says he is ready to go.
United still back Ole but clubs always have contingency plans when things start to wobble.

Jose Mourinho also lost his job at Man Utd following a defeat in LiverpoolCredit: Getty Images – Getty
The Red Devils did with Van Gaal, long before Moyes went.
They did with Mourinho before Van Gaal went and likewise Solskjaer before Mourinho was axed.
The only thing that stops that contingency plan being put into operation is results.
Solskjaer needs some and quick, starting on Saturday.
Win at Everton and he can breathe a sigh of relief and hope United come out the next international break as they did the last one with three impressive wins from four.
Merseyside did not think it would have to wait 30 years for a top-flight title to return there.
United were adamant they would never follow suit. But it has been seven years now, it will stretch to eight and there is every chance it will go beyond that.
Every team they beat to their last title under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013 is better than them.
Still, their lean years have brought an FA Cup, EFL Cup, Europa League and a second-placed Premier League finish.
Pochettino would have taken any one of those.
He did get to a Champions League final, though, and Spurs were awful in it.But he is the answer, it appears, just as Van Gaal was, then Mourinho and Solskjaer himself.
Ole is still at the wheel, as it stands. But United keep going round and round in circles.

Man Utd have a ‘little Xavi or Iniesta’ in whizkid Ethan Galbraith, claims Northern Ireland boss Ian Baraclough

ETHAN GALBRAITH is Manchester United’s ‘little Andres Iniesta or Xavi’, according to Northern Ireland boss Ian Baraclough.
The United youngster, 19, made his Red Devils debut in the Europa League defeat to Astana last year.

Despite not having played for the first-team since, Baraclough has been more than impressive by Galbraith after calling him up to Northern Ireland’s senior set-up.
Baraclough named Galbraith – who recently signed a new contract at United – in his squad for the upcoming Euro 2020 play-off against Slovakia.
And the boss has been thrilled by his progress having worked his way into his nation’s first-team reckoning via the Under-21s.

Baraclough told the Man Utd website: “Ethan, over the last six months, we’ve seen a maturity in his play and the way he goes about his work day to day.
“He’s excelled with the Under-21s and he’s a different type of player to anyone we’ve got in the senior squad.
“Hopefully it’s the start of a long career for him.
“Hopefully, he relishes his time from the start in this squad, rather than coming in from the Under-21 squad.

“He has earned his right with the way he has gone about his play for the last six months.”

Manchester clubs have the worst net spend in the past decade by some distance

Baraclough continued by saying he could become United’s – and Northern Ireland’s – ‘little Iniesta or Xavi’.
The boss added: “Not to put too much pressure on his shoulders, but he’s our little Iniesta or Xavi.
“[He’s] someone who can get on the ball and manipulate the ball and find positive passes.
“Over the coming years, he will give us a different flavour to the squad.
“He’s been brought in a couple of times and made his debut against Luxembourg.
“For him to be picked outright, it’s a big moment for him, but he’s ready for it.
”He’s gone and signed a new deal with Man Utd and you can see there’s a real self-confidence about him.
“It’s great someone like that can be a shining light for the young players, knowing there are chances for them if they perform at their clubs.“

Man Utd ace De Gea and girlfriend Edurne Garcia expecting first child as they announce pregnancy in cute Instagram post

DAVID DE GEA and his girlfriend Edurne Garcia are expecting their first baby.
The Manchester United keeper took to Instagram to announce the news with a cute post.

Spaniard De Gea shared a picture of a baby’s bottle alongside one of his personalised goalkeeping gloves and a microphone in a nod to Edurne’s singing career.
He posted some love heart emojis and a baby face and simply captioned it: “BabyIsComing.”
The post received more than 174,000 likes inside the first couple of hours.

And De Gea’s United team-mates Harry Maguire, Fred and Bruno Fernandes all commented on the snap and wished the Spanish international well.
Edurne also shared the same post with her 1.5million followers.
The 34-year-old is a singer, actress and television presenter having become famous on Spanish reality show Operacion Triunfo in 2005.
She reportedly once described Manchester as “uglier than the back of a fridge”.

But Edurne has since denied it claiming she was taken out of context.

De Gea has long been under fire at Old Trafford after some high profile mistakes last season.
And he was snubbed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for United’s Champions League defeat at Istanbul Basaksehir last night.
The Spain international was replaced by Dean Henderson who Solskjaer said has ‘matured’.

Five things Solskjaer must do to save Man Utd job ahead of make-or-break Everton clash as Pochettino waits in wings

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER faces a make-or-break game this weekend, taking on high-flying Everton in the Premier League on Saturday.
With the pressure mounting on the Manchester United boss, Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with the job – installed as the early favourite to finally take over at Old Trafford.

Tom McDermott lists five things the Norwegian must do if he is to save his job.
    PLAY WITH WIDTH
Solskjaer opted for the diamond during the 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal, which meant Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba were expected to provide width when they could – a tactic which failed catastrophically.
The boss unleashed the diamond again in the 2-1 defeat at Istanbul Basaksehir – with Juan Mata and Donny van de Beek tasked with adding width from within… again, it backfired.

If this is the way Solskjaer intends to go in the future, then the pressure will be on Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw to deliver in the attacking third – and they simply aren’t good enough at that.
Alex Telles is capable but he’s yet to establish himself after testing positive for coronavirus.
Solskjaer simply must revert to 4-3-3 / 4-2-3-1 which has the flexibility to revert to 4-5-1 when out of possession and provide some much-needed width during the different phases of play.
START CAVANI & VAN DE BEEK

Cavani – along with Van de Beek – must be starting for Man UtdCredit: EPA
Both summer signings have hardly had a chance since arriving.

You can forgive Solskjaer for not playing Cavani more, because the Uruguayan has barely kicked a ball since March – but Van de Beek is a different case.
The Dutchman played well in the game in Istanbul but was surprisingly withdrawn.
Cavani’s experience up front and Van de Beek’s eagerness to impress could be just what Solskjaer’s side needs to navigate through this tricky period.

    STICK WITH A BEST XI

Solskjaer must stop chopping and changing and pick his best XI, including Van de BeekCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd
You expect changes from time-to-time both in terms of team selection and formation.
But Solskjaer makes so many you could forgive the players if they started to become a little confused.
Solskjaer’s selection is always made with the opposition in mind and not focused enough on the damage his own side can cause teams.
There’s enough attacking quality in that United squad to beat most sides in Europe, as we’ve seen against Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig.
But until Solskjaer settles on a more ‘stable’ XI – in both formation and personnel – we’ll see blip after blip.
    RECRUIT IN JANUARY

Bruno Fernandes has proven January transfers can be season-changingCredit: PA:Press Association
We saw the impact Bruno Fernandes had last January when he signed for the club – and if Solskjaer manages to survive until the winter window, he needs to spend again.
United signed the wrong players in the summer and if it means part of the summer budget is moved forward to January , then that is what must happen.
Failure to be in that top four next May means Solskjaer will lose his job anyway.
    SHOW SOME PASSION

Solskjaer and his players have got to show a bit of passionCredit: AP:Associated Press
Before last night, Istanbul Basaksehir hadn’t scored a goal in the Champions League this season.
So it came as a shock to many United fans when they struck twice… and won.
United have a better team than many of their opponents, but the players look tired on the pitch, and the manager, at times, looks bored in the dugout.
Get in that technical area and let’s see a manager who is fighting for his life.
Solskjaer’s post-match interview where he says ‘it’s not good enough’ is becoming a regular occurrence.
It was also a familiar theme under David Moyes’ regime too – and we all know how that ended.

Watch ex-Chelsea star Demba Ba take advantage of ridiculous Man Utd defending after being left clear

DEMBA BA took advantage of Manchester United’s gung-ho attacking play to score the simplest of openers as Istanbul Basaksehir shocked the visitors on Wednesday night.
The Turkish champions were gifted the lead after just 12 minutes of the game.

⚠️ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford

Demba Ba was allowed to race free with all ten United outfield players in the opponents’ half
On the attack, United committed all ten of their outfield players to the cause.
Every single player was standing within 35 yards of the Istanbul Basaksehir goal.
But after the play broke down, Ba seized the opportunity to break out.

The former Chelsea star, 35, raced towards the halfway line with no-one standing between himself and Champions League debutant Dean Henderson.
The ball was punted over the top for Ba to chase, with only Nemanja Matic within ten yards of him.
Ba outpaced and outmuscled Matic to compose himself and roll the ball past Henderson and into the back of the net.
United legend Paul Scholes was scathing of his former side’s defending.

He said on BT Sport: “That goal is completely down to organisation. It’s like Under-10’s football.

Demba Ba celebrated after scoring a simple one-on-one in TurkeyCredit: Reuters

Demba Ba had only Nemanja Matic within ten yards of him as he streaked home to score

“What the back four were doing I have no idea, it’s embarrassing.”
Co-commentator Martin Keown labelled it as ‘comical’, while Robin van Persie also ripped into the Red Devils.
The Dutchman, 37, said: “I’ve never seen a goal conceded like that first goal – usually you leave two defenders at the back.”
United had won their opening two Group H games – 2-1 against Paris Saint-Germain and 5-0 against RB Leipzig.
But fell to a shock defeat in Turkey against the previously winless Basaksehir side.
Against arguably the minnows of the ‘Group of Death’, United would have hoped to press home their advantage with nine points from their opening three games but were stunned early on.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to start Henderson in goal over David De Gea – with the Spaniard having played the opening two group games.
And Axel Tuanzebe was recalled into the heart of defence after impressing against PSG – that night as part of a back-three.
Sticking with his new, preferred diamond formation, Matic joined Juan Mata, Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek in midfield.
But they were all caught napping as Ba was set clear to net the game’s opener in Istanbul Basaksehir’s quest to win their first Champions League game of the season.
The defending was just as bad for the second goal, with Edin Visca free at the back post to tap home from another counter-attack.
Anthony Martial struck back just before half-time, but it wasn’t enough as the home side held on for a famous win.

Five stars whose biggest mistake was leaving Man Utd including David Beckham, Jaap Stam and Javier Hernandez

DAVID BECKHAM, Jaap Stam and Javier Hernandez are just three players who may have regrets about leaving Manchester United for new challenges.
The trio won trophies galore at Old Trafford, and despite still claiming silverware after departing, their best football was played at the Theatre of Dreams.

David Beckham swapped England for sunny Spain in 2003 when he joined Real MadridCredit: Getty

Here, SunSport looks at five players who arguably made a mistake quitting the club.
    DAVID BECKHAM
A controversial entrant on the list, as though Beckham impressed in his four-year spell in Spain with Real Madrid, it took until his last season for him to win LaLiga.
In that time, he scored just 20 goals in 155 matches, compared to finding the back of the net 27 times in his last two campaigns at United.
He joined Los Blancos during the prime of his career at the age of 28, and he may feel as though Real should have won the Champions League during that time.

Real won the coveted trophy in 1998, 2000 and 2002, but Beckham couldn’t help his side progress further than the quarter-final stage after his arrival in 2003.
This is even more disappointing considering the former England skipper played alongside Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Raul, Roberto Carlos and Robinho at the Bernabeu.
Speaking to the BBC in 2010, Beckham said: “I’d have loved to have stayed at Manchester United for my whole career and never gone anywhere else, but it just wasn’t meant to be.
“It takes a special person and a player to stay at a club for so many years.”

    JAAP STAM
Ferguson fell out with Stam in 2001, with United selling the Dutch defender to Lazio when he was 29.
Stam spent three seasons at Old Trafford, where he won an abundance of trophies and was named in the PFA Team of the Year at the end of every term.
He won the Coppa Italia at Lazio in his third season, before he moved to AC Milan where he was part of the squad that lost to Liverpool in the Champions League final in 2005.
The former Reading boss finished his career at Ajax, but he never looked like the same monster that instilled fear in the hearts of Premier League attackers.

    JUAN SEBASTIAN VERON
The Argentine midfielder spent just two seasons at United before joining Chelsea in 2003 – where he lasted just one year before being loaned out to Inter Milan and Estudiantes.
Veron left United after winning the Premier League where he played in 42 games in all competitions.
It’s always been felt the superstar never quite fitted in at Old Trafford, but he did enough to be included in Gary Neville’s all-time United foreign XI.
He thought the grass was greener at Stamford Bridge when Roman Abramovich came to town.
However it wasn’t to be as he featured just seven times in the Premier League for the Blues.
After being released by Chelsea, he spent the last eight years of his career playing back in Argentina.

    JAVIER HERNANDEZ
A firm fan favourite, the Mexican international notched 59 goals in 157 games despite featuring predominantly off the bench.
But like many before him, he fell out with the management which resulted in him leaving.
He spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Real, before quitting United for Bayer Leverkusen in a permanent deal the following season.
Hernandez scored 39 times for the German outfit in two years – proving he could compete at the top level.
Shoud he have stayed at United under Louis van Gaal, United could well have challenged for the title as they missed his contributions.
After disappointing spells at West Ham and Sevilla, he is now embarking on a new chapter of his career at LA Galaxy.

    ANDREI KANCHELSKIS
The Russian winger – like Stam and Beckham – fell out with Ferguson, which resulted in him joining Everton in 1995.
He left United having won seven trophies with the club, where he was arguably at one point the best right winger in the country.
His departure led Beckham to take his place, and even though he shone at Goodison Park, he was sold to Fiorentina in 1997.
Kanchelskis played for eight different clubs after leaving United before retiring in 2006.
But the only trophies he won after departing came at Rangers, where he won five major honours.

Bruno Fernandes gave ball away 34 times as Man Utd were humbled in Istanbul – FOUR TIMES more than Van de Beek

BRUNO FERNANDES struggled yet again for Manchester United on Wednesday as he gave the ball away a staggering 34 TIMES against Istanbul Basaksehir.
The 26-year-old played the whole game in Turkey as his side lost 2-1, while team-mate Donny van de Beek was hauled off after 61 minutes despite impressing.

Fernandes how now flattered to deceive against Chelsea, Arsenal and Istanbul, with the player arguably going through his worst spell at United.

So it came as a surprise to many Red Devils fans that it was Van de Beek who went off despite being more influential in Turkey.
The Dutch midfielder – who is yet to start in the Premier League – had an impressive pass accuracy of 93 per cent.

His team-mate Fernandes completed just 73.8 per cent of his passes, and he also had a lower pass completion in the final third of the pitch.
Just 63.5 per cent of his passes were successful, with Van de Beek’s rate considerable higher at 84.2 per cent.
Fernandes also lost possession a whopping 34 times – more than four times the amount that Van de Beek gave the ball away.
The ex-Ajax midfielder lost possession just eight times, while he created one chance during the disappointing defeat.

That is one more than what Fernandes achieved, as he failed to create anything despite being on the pitch for half an hour longer.

In addition to that, the former Sporting Lisbon maestro registered just one shot on target out of four attempts – a free-kick that was easily parries away.
None of his six crosses found a team-mate, while just seven out of his 14 long passes were successful.
Pressure is mounting on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and he knows he must beat Everton on Saturday to ease speculation over his future.
When asked about his position after United’s defeat to Istanbul, he said: “I decline to comment.
“It is early and opinions are out there all the time. I have got to stay strong.
“I am employed by the club to do a job and will do it to the best of my ability.”
