How Marcus Rashford and Man Utd benefited from Sliding Doors moment… without it he’d be playing for Wigan

MARCUS RASHFORD arrived on the scene at Manchester United by glorious accident – just like his current managers with club and country.
A knee injury to Wayne Rooney, a late pull-out from Anthony Martial and a striker who’s “Manc born and bred” was thrust in to United’s starting line-up for the Europa League tie against Danish club Midtjylland.

Marcus Rashford has benefited from his Sliding Doors moment in 2016

Yet the local lad in question should have been Will Keane – twin brother of England defender Michael.
At five years older than Rashford, Will was on the brink of a first-team breakthrough after several loan moves.
With Louis Van Gaal’s United at least one striker short throughout that 2015-16 season, Keane had made a couple of sub appearances, yet he too was struck down by injury.
So enter Rashford – “Marcus who?” to all of us who were at Old Trafford that night – to see if United could avoid embarrassment after a 2-1 first-leg defeat in Denmark.

It was Rashford’s Sliding Doors moment.
Suddenly the 18-year-old kid who’d started that season in the youth team rather than the reserves was Manchester United’s centre forward.
Often a talented teenager coming through the ranks at a top-six club is widely whispered about before their first-team breakthrough.
Yet nobody had seen him coming.

Rashford – who yesterday won his fight with Boris Johnson to feed hungry kids this Christmas – scored twice on his first-team debut, then twice on his Premier League debut to deliver a devastating blow to Arsenal’s title hopes in a 3-2 victory.
After that he snaffled the only goal at the Etihad in his first Manchester derby.
He would go on to score on his England debut and his Champions League debut too – showcasing the supreme calmness he needed in injury-time at the Parc des Princes as United pulled off a miracle in March 2019.
That penalty to complete an astonishing Champions League comeback against Paris St Germain was the first spot-kick Rashford ever took for United.
After a mysterious VAR call gave United their chance, Paris Saint-Germain’s experienced dark-artists tried every trick to distract him and Rashford buried it.
Again United had been in the midst of an injury crisis in Europe. Again Rashford had stepped up.
According to Solskjaer, both Rashford and Romelu Lukaku were on penalty duty that night and had been asked to fight it out between them.
Rashford later revealed Lukaku let him take the spot-kick so he could grab the headlines.

Marcus Rashford was the hero as United battled past PSG in March 2019Credit: Reuters
He was never likely to miss. Rashford doesn’t do nerves. Yet had United never suffered that injury crisis in February 2016 then who knows?
He hadn’t been earmarked for a breakthrough that season and then came Jose Mourinho – hardly a man given to blooding unproven kids – along with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. A year later, £75million Lukaku.
So, however talented, Rashford could have drifted – like Will Keane, currently at Wigan.
Or like the other United kid to make his debut against Midtjylland, full-back Joe Riley – now at League Two Carlisle.
Rashford was always blessed with outstanding ball skills but physically, he was a late developer.
And the X factor for any striker is the ability to deliver under pressure – a quality impossible to measure until he is given a first-team opportunity.
Those two and a half years under Mourinho were not a complete wasteland.
Rashford continued to play regularly but, more often than not, on the wing – and it never felt as though the Portuguese believed in him.
    RASH REVITALISED
His disgusted reaction when Rashford squandered a chance against Young Boys in the Champions League group stage seemed to sum up their relationship.
Yet even before he was appointed as United’s caretaker boss, Solskjaer had recognised a kindred goal-poaching spirit in Rashford.
Two seasons ago, he’d give the young Englishman a pep talk about rediscovering that calmness in front of goal which had given him his breakthrough in the first place.
As soon as Solskjaer took over as caretaker boss, Rashford was revitalised.
He scored the first goal of the Norwegian’s reign after just three minutes at Cardiff, then netted again against Bournemouth.

Although his magnificent assist for Paul Pogba was the highlight of that match, with United clearly discovering their joie de vivre.
England boss Southgate, like Solskjaer, stumbled upon his current job as a lucky caretaker, having suffered relegation in his previous Premier League job.
Opportunism is a crucial in top-level football. Solskjaer and Southgate both recognise that quality in Rashford.

Watch Man Utd boss Solskjaer in furious Fergie-esque rant at fixture pile-up after Rashford and Shaw injured vs Everton

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer let rip in a furious, Sir Alex Ferguson-esque rant over his side’s fixture pile-up just moments after watching his side beat Everton.
The Red Devils beat Everton 3-1 in Saturday’s lunch-time kick-off – a little over two days after slipping to defeat in Turkey.

United lost against Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League on Wednesday night, before embarking on the long flight home and getting straight back to training.
Despite beating Everton, Solskjaer was left enraged after he saw Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford pick up injuries.
And the livid boss slammed Premier League officials, saying he believes his United squad have been ‘set up to fail’, while calling the congested schedule a shambles.

A clearly seething Solskjaer told BT Sport: “We were set up to fail. The kick-off time set us up to fail.
“We have been to Turkey, played loads of games this season already, we got back Thursday morning and we are playing Saturday lunchtime.
“It’s an absolute shambles. These boys deserve better.
“Luke Shaw has got injured because of it. It’s a hamstring which might be a long one.

“And Marcus Rashford might be struggling.

“The authorities set us up for fail, who is responsible?
    “We’ve had enough of that.
“Players this season, in these times, a pandemic, mentally and physically it’s draining.
“Let us play on a Sunday, there’s an international break after this, it’s a joke.”
However, Solskjaer was quick to deflect praise to his players, despite his obvious anger.
After coming from behind to steal all three points against high-flying Everton, the boss said: “The players were brilliant.”
Edinson Cavani – who scored his first goal for the club in the 95th-minute – was also singled out for praise.
Solskjaer added: “Cavani is getting better and better.”

Watch Edinson Cavani score first Man Utd goal after unselfish Bruno Fernandes passes up hat-trick chance to assist him

EDINSON CAVANI scored his first Manchester United goal in a 3-1 win against Everton – and had selfless team-mate Bruno Fernandes to thank for it.
The Toffees were caught on the break as they pushed for a late equaliser.

The pitch opened up and United were able to unleash a four-on-two attack.
Fernandes could have fired at goal to complete his hat-trick, but unselfishly squared for Cavani.
The Uruguayan, 33, made no mistake as he coolly fired past Jordan Pickford in the home goal.

It was Cavani’s first goal for his new club having gone goalless in his opening four games.
The former Paris Saint-Germain ace will hope it opens the floodgates.
Speaking after the game, Fernandes said: “I don’t need to think about a hat-trick.
“For a striker it is important to score for his confidence.

“He will be important for us and the first goal will give him confidence.”
As well as Cavani, the 3-1 win will ease some of the pressure on Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Norwegian has come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks after a string of bad results, most-recently in the shock 2-1 defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir.
And Solskjaer would have feared the worst ahead of kick-off too after all THREE of his United predecessors – David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho – all lost their jobs on Merseyside.

And when Bernard gave Everton the lead early on, Solskjaer must have been fearing the worst.
Fernandes got United level with a header shortly after.
And, five minutes later, his cross for Marcus Rashford missed everyone and snuck in off the far post to put his side in front.
With Everton pressing to avoid their third straight defeat, they over-committed in attack.
And United, led by Fernandes and Cavani, took full advantage in the fifth minute of four to be added on.

Everton 1 Man Utd 3: Bruno Fernandes double and Cavani give Solskjaer much-needed comeback win as Toffees lose yet again

A BRUNO BRACE stopped the rot for Manchester United and may even ease the speculation about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – for now at least.
Bruno Fernandes struck twice and teed up Edinson Cavani for a late third as United recovered well from falling behind to another soft goal.

You can usually tell when a team has stopped playing for a manager, but the way Solskjaer’s side avoided losing a third game in a week suggested that time had not come yet.
Instead it was a flat-looking Everton who were beaten for their third Premier League match in a row.
Both teams can go into the international break and regroup, with the pressure off Solskjaer after another mini crisis.

But it could have been different if Everton had built on their lead.
United started well enough, enjoying plenty of possession and fashioning the first chance, which Anthony Martial dragged just wide.
But minutes later, rank defending allowed Bernard to open the scoring.
Victor Lindelof’s challenge on Dominic Calvert-Lewin was weak and the ball broke to the Brazilian.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka failed to close him down quickly enough and Bernard squeezed a shot inside David De Gea’s right-hand post.

Fair play to United, they soon hit back with a much more attractive goal.
Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata combined to work the ball to Luke Shaw, whose cross was headed home emphatically by Fernandes while Everton’s defence stood and stared.
Everton left-back Lucas Digne hit the outside of a post when a cross looked the better option and Pickford saved a Fernandes free kick as the game became more open and end-to-end.
And then the Portuguese schemer soon put his side ahead.
Another good move gave him room to clip in a ball towards Rashford and replays showed the England striker failed to connect with his head, leaving the ball to go in off the far post.
The game was more even after half-time but Pickford, recalled after being rested for the Newcastle defeat, was soon at the centre of more VAR controversy.

Confusion reigned over Man Utd’s second goal as Rashford celebrated despite not getting a head on Fernandes’ crossCredit: Reuters
This time the Everton goalkeeper dropped a Juan Mata free-kick and then joined Michael Keane in kicking Harry Maguire.
Yet video official Michael Oliver, who had missed Pickford’s lunge on Virgil van Dijk in the Merseyside derby, saw no reason to award a penalty.
The England keeper made a good save from Rashford to keep the match alive and United had two more penalty claims dismissed.
At the other end, Maguire led United’s defence well and Everton struggled to create a clear-cut chance to equalise.
Abdoulaye Doucoure had two sights of goal, but both his efforts were poor.
And in stoppage-time, Fernandes led the break and fed Cavani, who opened his United account and can now look forward to working with Solskjaer for a little while to come.

Watch confusion as Rashford celebrates second Man Utd goal before Fernandes given it as replays show striker missed ball

BRUNO FERNANDES was awarded Manchester United’s second goal at Everton after Marcus Rashford sparked confusion by celebrating his phantom header.
In the week, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer demanded his players show some passion in a bid to save him from becoming the latest Red Devils chief to perish on Merseyside.

Marcus Rashford scores to give Man Utd the lead…Or does he?! 👀It looked like he buried the header, but replays suggest that’s Bruno Fernandes’ goal! 🇵🇹 pic.twitter.com/brG8wypFPc
    — Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) November 7, 2020

But Everton quickly made the Norwegian sweat as the hosts took the lead through Bernard, before Bruno Fernandes sparked a first-half comeback.
The Portugal star grabbed his fifth goal of the season with a headed equaliser.
He then delivered an inch-perfect cross for Marcus Rashford to seemingly give his side the lead with his head.

However, fans were left baffled after replays seemed to suggest Fernandes’ teasing, curling cross evaded everything, from Everton’s defenders and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to Rashford’s head.
On first glimpse, it appears Rashford got his head to the ball, such was his confident celebration.
But Fernandes was officially credited with the goal as United went into half-time 2-1 up.
Man Utd had initially tweeted ‘RAAASSSHHHFFOOOORRDDDD!’ after the ball nestled in the corner of Pickford’s net.

But they were later forced to back-track, adding: “Sorry, @MarcusRashford – that one may be Bruno’s as well. United now lead 2-1!”

The Premier League officially confirmed the goal belonged to Fernandes with a tweet of their own.
They wrote: “After review, the #PL Match Centre has awarded the goal to Bruno Fernandes, as Marcus Rashford didn’t make contact with the ball.”
Fantasy football bosses will no doubt argue the claim but the points will go to Fernandes, not Rashford.

How Man Utd manager Solskjaer compares with Fergie’s successors as stats show under-fire boss has second-best win ratio

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER knows he must beat Everton on Saturday to ease the speculation surrounding his future at Old Trafford.
The Manchester United boss is under huge pressure following back-to-back defeats against Arsenal and Istanbul Basaksehir.

United currently sit 15th in the Premier League table after six games played, but they could drop to 17th should they lose to Everton on Saturday.
The Norwegian gaffer has been in charge for almost two years after replacing Jose Mourinho, but how does he compare to Sir Alex Ferguson’s other successors?

Here SunSport takes a look at how they fared at the Theatre of Dreams.
DAVID MOYES – win ratio – 52.9 per cent
Dubbed ‘The Chosen One’ after being hand-picked by Ferguson himself, the Scotsman was handed a six-year contract by United.
However he failed to last a single season after he was sacked in April 2014 after a defeat by his former employers Everton.
Of his 51 games in charge, he won 27, lost 15 and drew nine.

At the time of his sacking, United were seventh in the table – 13 points behind fourth-placed Arsenal with four games to go.
The highlight of his spell at United arguably came in his first official match, when his side beat Wigan in the Community Shield.

LOUIS VAN GAAL – win ratio – 52.4 per cent
The legendary Dutchman was replaced by Mourinho after guiding United to FA Cup glory at the end of his second year in charge in 2016.
Van Gaal took charge of 103 games, winning 54 and losing 24.
United finished in fourth spot under the tutelage of Van Gaal in his opening campaign, before they finished fifth the following term.
The club also failed to progress from their group in the Champions League in his second season, before crashing out in the Round of 16 stage in the Europa League.

JOSE MOURINHO – win ratio – 58.3 per cent
The Special One boasts the highest win percentage out of any manager post-Ferguson after 84 victories out of 144 matches.
His first year in charge saw United win the League Cup, Europa League and Community Shield, though the club finished in sixth place in the top-flight.
No trophies were won the following year after losing in the Uefa Super Cup, however United finished in second spot.
Despite finishing 19 points behind Manchester City, Mourinho hailed their finish as one his biggest achievements of his career.
Mourinho was sacked in December 2018 after losing to Liverpool, with United winning just seven out of their opening 17 league games.

Jose Mourinho won three trophies during his time in charge at the Theatre of DreamsCredit: EPA

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER – win ratio – 54.5 per cent
Solskjaer was initially appointed on an interim basis, but after winning 14 out of his opening 19 games, United offered him a three-year deal.
Under his tutelage, United finished both the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons with 66 points, with the first term seeing the club end the campaign in sixth spot.
But the points tally was enough to get United into third place last season thanks to Leicester drifting off following Project Restart.
Pressure is mounting on Solskjaer this season after three defeats already in the top-flight.
United are yet to win any of their home games at Old Trafford – picking up just one point out of 12 on offer.
But Solskjaer’s overall win percentage is better than both Moyes and Van Gaal could manage – but does trail that of Mourinho.

Man Utd dressing room ‘support’ Pochettino move if Solskjaer is sacked but Argentine already in talks with another club

MAURICIO POCHETTINO would have the ‘support’ of the Manchester United squad should he replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to reports.
It follows claims on Thursday that the Red Devils had approached the former Tottenham boss about taking over.

However SunSport understands there has been no contact with the 48-year-old, though Solskjaer is sweating over his future at Old Trafford.

The Norwegian will definitely be in the dugout at Goodison Park for the away clash at Everton on Saturday, where a loss could see his side drop down to 17th.
According to the Daily Mail, Solskjaer remains a popular figure with the players, though there are concerns about whether he is the right man to get them back on track.

It’s claimed that should Solskjaer, 47, be sacked by United, the dressing room would support the club’s decision if they brought Pochettino in.
However, United face missing out on the Argentine, with it alleged that he has held talks with at least one ‘high-profile’ team in recent weeks.
Appearing on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Pochettino declared he is ready to return to management after being sacked almost one year ago by Spurs.
He said: “I always feel ready to get back involved in the game. I love football, it’s my job.

“It’s not a stress when you are working, it’s not a stress to go into the training ground, it’s not a stress to prepare the game, it’s not a stress to compete.

“My hair is long, look. I hope to cut it when we start working again to work.
“I am looking forward again to being involved in the game.”
Asked if he would ideally like his next job to be in the Premier League, he added: “I don’t know. I am not going to close any door.
“I learnt when I really really young that football will dictate the way.
“I am waiting to feel which is the right project for us to take.”
