Man Utd dealt transfer blow after Zinedine Zidane claims Real Madrid chiefs consider Raphael Varane ‘untransferable’

REAL MADRID chiefs have labelled Manchester United target Raphael Varane ‘untransferable’, according to Zinedine Zidane.
United have been heavily linked with a move for the French centre-back but Los Blancos boss Zidane has moved quickly to quash the idea.

United reportedly have an ‘opportunity’ to sign the France international for less than £100million.
They tried to sign him was back in 2011 when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge but the 27-year-old moved to the Bernabeu instead.
But Zidane is not interested in United’s renewed interest.

Speaking ahead of Real’s 1-1 draw at Villareal on Saturday, Zidane said: “It’s not just me [that wants to keep him].
“He is part of this club, we were very lucky to be able to bring him to Madrid.
“He has a great career, he’s achieved a lot since he’s been here.
“Of course, he is ‘un-transferable’ for the club, for the coach that I am, for people in general.

“That’s clear and unambiguous. Now we can’t stop people from talking.

“They’re not just talking about Varane, but about all the players, Real Madrid ones and others.
“But for Varane, my position is clear, and it’s the same as the club’s position.”
When Varane left Lens for Real, United went on to sign Phil Jones.
Varane’s name was put forward again after winning the World Cup in 2018.
But Jose Mourinho did not think he could get him, so he called off the pursuit before United splashed £85m on Harry Maguire last year.
However, they could make a sensational move to try and land him a decade on when the transfer window reopens in January.
Varane will have 18 months left on his current deal and would plug a gap as both an elite centre-back and strong leader in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
He did switch agent to join Base Soccer in September – a company United have a good relationship with – and is in the ideal age bracket for a defender.
However, the rumoured interest may just be the work of Varane’s new agent to broker an improved deal with the LaLiga champions.

How Barcelona could have lined up with Rooney in 2010 as Man Utd legend admits he wanted to play with Messi and Co

WAYNE ROONEY has revealed he was keen to swap Manchester United for Barcelona in 2010 as he longed to play alongside Lionel Messi.
The 35-year-old has stated that he came close to departing Old Trafford a decade ago after putting in a transfer request.

This is how Barcelona could have looked if they signed Wayne Rooney in 2010

Despite heavy interest from Chelsea, the former England skipper has insisted he wanted to ply his trade at the Nou Camp.
⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford
He told the UTD Podcast: “In my head, at the time, in that two-day period, I was ready to go and play in Spain.
“Ideally, I would have liked to have gone to Barcelona, but it was looking more likely to be Real Madrid than Barcelona. Chelsea were always there as well.

“I remember sitting down for one day and thinking ‘imagine playing in that Barcelona team – Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets’.
“And at that time Messi wasn’t playing the way he plays now, as a No 9 for instance. He was out wide.
“I was thinking I could have slotted in perfectly. I could have come to the ball as well and have players running in behind. I remember thinking about that.”
Rooney – who is looking to become Derby’s permanent gaffer – scored against the Blaugrana in the Champions League final defeat at the end of the 2010/11 season.

But should he have linked up with Pep Guardiola’s side, he would have surely led the line for the Spanish giants.

His former United team-mate Victor Valdes would have started between the sticks, with Dani Alves and Eric Abidal to slot in as Barca’s full-backs.
Gerard Pique – another team-mate of Rooney during his spell at the Theatre of Dreams – would have featured alongside Javier Mascherano at centre-back.
A midfield three would have consisted of Spanish trio Sergio Busquets, Xavi and Andres Iniesta.
Centre-forward David Villa joined from Valencia in 2010, but he would have started at left wing as he did for Barca.
Lionel Messi would then have had to slot in on the ring wing with Rooney spearheading the attack for the Catalan club.

Man Utd set to HALVE asking price for Sergio Romero transfer after he and wife were left furious at exit being blocked

SERGIO ROMERO will reportedly be allowed to leave Manchester United in a cut-price deal in January after he was denied a summer switch.
SunSport exclusively revealed last month that the 33-year-old begged the club to let him leave having fallen further down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero is desperate to leave the club

Dean Henderson is now United’s second choice goalkeeper following his successful loan spell at Sheffield United, leaving no room for Romero.
⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford
His wife was furious with the club after a move to Everton stalled, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side haggled over a £5million fee.
The Toffees then turned to Swedish star Robin Olsen, who they brought in on loan from Roma.

With the Argentine shot-stopper set to leave the Theatre of Dreams on a free transfer at the end of the season, United are said to be willing to cash in on him in the New Year.
According to the Mirror, Romero could be allowed to leave should any potential suitor cough up £2.5m.
Romero – who has been omitted from United’s Premier League and Europa League squads – hasn’t featured in a top-flight game since the 2017-18 campaign.
He saw a move to MLS side Inter Miami fall through, forcing him to remain in England until at least January.

The former Sampdoria ace is now training alone at United as he counts down the days until the winter transfer window.

Romero joined United in 2015, but has been limited to just 61 appearances in all competitions.
His highlight at the club came in 2017 when he started in the Europa League final victory against Ajax.
Despite featuring nine times in the tournament last term, David De Gea was preferred instead in the semi-final loss against Sevilla, leaving the goalkeeper devastated.

Rio Ferdinand slams ‘disgraceful’ VAR as Man Utd rescued by dodgy call after Bruno Fernandes foul vs West Brom

MANCHESTER UNITED legend called VAR a ‘disgrace’ after it rescued his old side against West Brom.
Bruno Fernandes was perhaps the luckiest player on the pitch as he benefited TWICE from the video technology during the 1-0 win.

Referee David Coote awarded the Baggies a penalty early in the second half after adjudging Fernandes had fouled Conor Gallagher but changed his mind after a video ref prompt.
That was despite TV replays appearing to show United’s Portuguese star whacking Gallagher’s shin.
Minutes later Coote awarded United a penalty for handball against Semi Ajayi — even though the Baggies player had his back turned.

Coote’s decision was supported by VAR and Fernandes converted the twice-taken spot kick after video technology intervened again to rule keeper Sam Johnstone had moved off his line first time round when saving.
Ex-United star Rio Ferdinand let rip after the first incident, saying: “It’s a disgraceful decision. The more you look at it, the more it’s a penalty.
“That was so clear. That is not what VAR is for.”
Former ref Peter Walton: “VAR should not have got involved. It’s not a clear and obvious error but VAR has put pressure on the ref in charge by asking him to look at the monitor.

“It’s a shin-on-shin tackle and the referee’s original decision should have stood.

“VAR is bringing in its own subjective opinions and that is not what it is for.”
Another former United great, Paul Scholes, summed it up perfectly after the final whistle after witnessing both incidents at Old Trafford.
He said: “We are going from one VAR disaster from another week after week.”

How was that penalty overturned 😳😳😳
    — Matt Le Tissier (@mattletiss7) November 21, 2020

Not sure how thats been overturned 🤷🏻‍♂️
    — Ben Chilwell (@BenChilwell) November 21, 2020

And a host of current players and former pros were similarly perplexed watching at home on TV.
Chelsea and England defender Ben Chilwell tweeted: “Not sure how that’s been overturned.”
While former SkySports pundit Matt Le Tissier asked: “How was that penalty overturned?”

The penalty rules are pretty clear. You can kick people in the box, but you can’t have arms. Get with it grandad.
    — chris o’dowd (@BigBoyler) November 21, 2020

Laws and laws, but Fernandes shinning Gallagher is 1,000,000% more a penalty than someone having the ball tatted at their hand from 3 yards in my world. I might be wrong. But anyway, life continues xoxox
    — Max Rushden (@maxrushden) November 21, 2020

Not hard to see why the penalty was reversed. I mean, all Bruno Fernandes did was kick the West Brom player in the shin in the penalty box. That’s completely fine.

Cavani offered more in late outing for Man Utd against West Brom than Martial while Fernandes is thanking his lucky VARs

The Red Devils struggled at times to break down the tough Baggies rearguard and their inspired goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.
Sun Sport’s Gary Stonehouse watched on to give his verdict on how each United star performed:
    DE GEA – 7

    Had little to do throughout.
But he kept his concentration to make an important save to deny Conor Townsend seconds before Fernandes’ opener.
    WAN-BISSAKA – 6
    Little to do defensively.

But, as always, he offered his usual threat supporting the attack down the flanks.

    LINDELOF – 6
Solid display alongside Maguire at the back.
And he made an important inception late on to cut-out Hal Robson-Kanu to help his team claim the points.
    MAGUIRE – 6
Usual threat from corners and a thunderous volley was blocked by the face of Kyle Bartley. Allowed the same man to out-muscle him to narrowly head off target moments later when defending a set-piece.
Came close again from a corner but was denied by man of the match Sam Johnstone.
    TELLES – 6
Back after his Covid scare and finally got to make his Premier League debut.
He was dreaming of the headlines when he volleyed over from 25 yards after meeting a corner but looked comfortable throughout.
The Brazilian tried to walk onto another corner later on but his Paul Scholes-esque effort was high-and-wide again.

Fred celebrates with Fernandes after the Portuguese star’s penaltyCredit: AP:Associated Press
    MATIC – 6
Struggled against the tricks of Matheus Pereira in the first half but did what he had to do for the majority.
    Typical no-frills, no-nonsense
    FRED – 5
Could have unleashed a shot when teed-up by Martial on the edge of the area to double the advantage.
But he bottled his big moment and instead tried to shift the responsibility on to Fernandes as the chance went begging on a very innocuous evening for the Brazilian.
Replaced by McTominay during the closing stages.
    MATA – 6
Struggled to carve open the Baggies backline but did win United the penalty.
Replaced by Edinson Cavani on the hour mark.

    FERNANDES – 7
One man who is loving VAR tonight is the Portuguese attacker, who once again proved to be the matchwinner for United.
He was saved by the video technology not once but TWICE after it overruled the ref’s decision to award West Brom a penalty when he caught Conor Gallagher on the shin.
He then had a spot-kick of his saved minutes later – only to get a second chance that he made no mistake from after Johnstone came off his line first time around.
Although it wasn’t his best night, he loves taking on responsibility and the thought of him not being at Old Trafford must be terrifying for the Stretford End.
    RASHFORD – 6
Quiet first half but burst into life after West Brom’s penalty scare when he hammered one towards the corner from 20 yards out with Sam Johnstone saving it well.
He was then denied by another incredible stop by the Baggies keeper but it was a quiet night by his high standards.
    MARTIAL – 6
Twice denied by Baggies goalkeeper Sam Johnstone early on and wanted a penalty just before the half hour after a tug on the shirt.
He has only found the net twice this campaign, and the Frenchman is desperate for a goal with Cavani chomping at the bit to replace him.

    SUBS
    CAVANI (63 MINUTES) – 7
Brought his usual non-stop movement following his intro and instantly provided more of a threat to the frontline.
It cannot be much longer before Solskjaer hands him a start for the out-of-sorts Martial, despite his late booking.
    VAN DE BEEK (79 MINUTES) – 5
Replaced Rashford with just over ten to go as United tried to shore things up by had little opportunity to make an impact.
    MCTOMINAY (84 MINUTES) – N/A
Was only given the last six minutes to help shut up shop.

How Man Utd could line-up vs West Brom with Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood doubts but Martial out with injury

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER has something of an injury crisis on his hands ahead of Manchester United’s clash with West Brom.
Having not played since the 3-1 win at Everton due to the international break, the Red Devils boss would have hoped to have come out of the blocks firing.

⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford

How Man Utd could line-up against West Brom on Saturday
But Solskjaer could be without his ENTIRE group of strikers, while also missing key men in defence.
In attack, Man Utd will definitely be without Anthony Martial, who suffered a back injury on France duty.
And there are doubts too surrounding Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

Rashford missed the international break with a shoulder injury, while Solskjaer asked both England and their Under-21s to not pick Greenwood.
Solskjaer said: “The short version is Luke Shaw, Jesse Lingard and Phil Jones are the only ones who didn’t join in parts of the training today. They’re at different stages.
“Some of them had recovery after the international on Wednesday and travelled and are working back after injury and fitness and we’ll make a decision tonight but most of them have joined in today and some joined in yesterday, so looking good.
“Rashford and Lindelof? Possibles, but some of them are probably some doubts. Marcus joined in for the first time today, hopefully there’s no reaction, I’m not sure.

“Bailly, that was his first day today, so no. Him and Marcos Rojo joined for the first time in a month, at least, so they’re not ready.
“Victor, we’ll have to check tomorrow because his back is not great.”
Under-21s boss Aidy Boothroyd admitted Greenwood ‘has had a lot of niggling injuries and a lot of things going on in his life’.
That leaves only Edinson Cavani available to lead the line should they miss out.
And the new-boy – who scored his first United goal against Everton – is a doubt himself.
Cavani only recently returned from Uruguay duty and even missed Thursday’s training session.

Another way Solskjaer could line-up his Man Utd squad on Saturday

The ex-Paris Saint-Germain veteran is still most-likely to lead the line, flanked by Daniel James and Juan Mata should Rashford and Greenwood miss out.
In midfield, Solskjaer is likely to pick his preferred trio, with Scott McTominay and Fred playing deeper, and Bruno Fernandes slotting in at the No10 position.
David De Gea will keen his place between the sticks.
But with Luke Shaw out with a hamstring injury, Alex Telles may be forced to start at left-back after seemingly recovering from coronavirus, having returned a fresh negative test.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka will continue at right-back, but there are concerns in the heart of defence.
Phil Jones is unregistered, while there are injury doubts surrounding Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly.

Maguire complained of a bruised foot following England’s win over Iceland.
Lindelof played through the pain for Sweden despite a back injury, while Bailly could be fit, but has been out of action since early October.
Bailly was picked for Ivory Coast’s two games during the international break – but failed to play in either match.
That means Axel Tuanzebe will likely start, with Solskjaer hoping Maguire is pain-free for the match.
Man Utd welcome West Brom to Old Trafford for Saturday’s 8pm kick-off.

Man Utd transfer boost as Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule ‘dreams of Old Trafford move’ amid Solskjaer interest

BAYERN MUNICH centre-back Niklas Sule reportedly ‘dreams’ of joining Manchester United once he decides to depart the Bundesliga.
The Germany international – who still has two years left to run on his deal at the Allianz Arena – was targeted by the Red Devils last year.

Niklas Sule is reportedly keen on a move to join Manchester United in the future

Sule, 25, remained in Bavaria, where he helped the club win the league, cup and Champions League last season.
⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford
But it appears that he has already made up his mind on the next chapter of his career.
According to Bild journalist Christian Falk, the ex-Hoffenheim defender has set his sights on a future move to Old Trafford.

Taking to Twitter, the German football expert said: “True: Niklas Sule dreams of playing for @ManUtd one day.”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is known to be desperate to bring in a centre-back to partner Harry Maguire at the back.
And with Sule said to be keen to link up with the club, United could look to reignite their interest in him.
United are also believed to be interested in prising away Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig.

The France international is expected to depart the German side in 2021, and he could decide his future as early as January.

Touted as one of the most talented defenders in Europe, the 22-year-old boasts just a £40million release clause in his contract.
United are looking to offload Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo, and there remains question marks over Eric Bailly.
Solskjaer’s men have struggled defensively this season having shipped in 14 Premier League goals in seven games – losing on three occasions.

Chris Smalling slams Man Utd over ‘s*** situation’ for way Roma transfer was handled and training on his own

CHRIS SMALLING has slammed Manchester United, saying they put him in a ‘s*** situation’ in the summer transfer window.

Smalling grew frustrated at Man Utd after being frozen out by SolskjaerCredit: Getty – Contributor

But after returning to Old Trafford in the summer, Smalling reveals he was only told he wouldn’t feature in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans AFTER the Premier League deadline closed.
Ultimately, the former Fulham ace was able to escape Man Utd with just one day left on the Italian transfer window in an £18million move.
But it wasn’t without its frustrations, as Smalling told The Telegraph: “I was just a bit frustrated.
“One, I would like to have been told earlier and then, secondly, I was only able to go with just a day left of the Italian window being open.

“I knew that my days under Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) were pretty much numbered.
“The English window had shut. I was left in a very s*** situation. I had to decide.
“After I had that chat [with Solskjaer] it was a case of, ‘I’m not sure when your next game will be.’

“In an ideal situation I would have known early in the summer and made plans and it almost got to the stage where I had a day left.

“My wife had just had a kid as well. There was a lot going on that happened at the last minute.”
Even after his move appeared to be close, Smalling revealed he thought it was destined to collapse.
The ex-England star added: “There was more than one occasion when I didn’t think it was going to happen.
“Even in the week before… there were a couple of times when it was very close and it was pretty much off.”
Smalling spent a decade at Man Utd – between 2010 and 2020 – scoring 18 goals in 323 games, including two Premier League titles.
