Solskjaer insists Man Utd star Cavani has ‘learnt his lesson’ over ‘negrito’ post ahead of ‘special’ PSG clash

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER has backed Edinson Cavani to put his troubles to one side when he faces PSG in the Champions League.
The Manchester United striker is under investigation by the FA for an Instagram post to a friend that read ‘Gracias negrito’.

He is facing a three-match ban for the offence which followed his two goal heroics in landing a 3-2 win for United at Southampton on Sunday.
As it is he is available for the match with PSG, with United needing just a point from the game to qualify for the next stage.
And Solskjaer said: “He’s learnt a lesson, it might affect him but he”ll have to put it to one side when the game’s on.
“The best players put their problems and other thoughts away for a while and perform when they have to.

“It’s special for him to play against PSG, his old club where he’s the top scorer, so that’ll affect him mentally but from knowing him that’ll give him energy.
“He is so professional and experienced.
“He will work on his mindset today and tomorrow to be ready for the game.”
Solskjaer defended Cavani for his error, claiming there was never any intent to offend by using the phrase.

He said: “We’ve communicated with Edinson and he’s really deeply sorry for the mistake he’s made.
“There was no malicious intent at all, it was just an affectionate greeting to a friend of his.
“But we have explained things to him.
“He has been asked by the FA to explain and we support the FA in them asking for him to explain so it is out there for everyone to see and he’ll cooperate with them, and we’ll support him.”

Real Madrid top all-time Champions League table with Man Utd most successful English team as best 20 sides revealed

REAL MADRID are the most-successful team in Champion League history – that is a well-known fact.
The Spanish giants have won 13 European titles in their glittering history – more than any other club.

Real Madrid are the most-successful club in CL history

A lot more than any other club… AC Milan sit second with seven trophies, with Liverpool and Bayern Munich next on six apiece.
Los Blancos enjoyed a purple patch in the 2010s, winning ‘Ol’ Big Ears’ in 2014, as well as three in a row between 2016 and 2018.
But as well as winning the most Champions League trophies, Real Madrid would also be top of the charts in terms of points.
Once the group stages are over, the remaining 16 teams all go into a straight knockout situation – but what if points were awarded like in the early round?

In that case, Real Madrid are yet again runaway leaders with a staggering 863 points from their 441 Champions League games.
To average nearly two points per game against Europe’s best clubs – including knockout rounds against the creme de la creme is exceptional.
And over 400 matches is no small sample size, either…
No one comes close, with reigning champions Bayern Munich in second on just 686 points from 350 games.

Barcelona rank third with 626 points – winning five trophies down the years.
Manchester United are England’s most-successful club, coming fourth overall on 512 points.
Juventus (493) sit fifth, ahead of AC Milan (417), Liverpool and Porto (both 375).
Benfica (371) and Ajax (325) complete the top ten – with the Premier League’s next-best performers Arsenal (306) and Chelsea (297) in 11th and 12th respectively.
Amongst British clubs, only Celtic also crack the top 20, with a total of 205 points in all.
Fellow Scottish Premiership side Rangers (160) sit 25th, ahead of Manchester City (142) in 29th.

Edinson Cavani set to be available for Man Utd’s next four games even if he is charged for ‘racist’ post

EDINSON CAVANI is set to be available for Manchester United until Christmas week – even if he is charged for his allegedly ‘racist’ social media post.
SunSport revealed that Wembley beaks have opened an investigation into Cavani’s Instagram response to a congratulatory message after firing his side to victory at Southampton.

Edinson Cavani is being investigated for this social media post

The Uruguayan answered a fan who posted a message of ‘asi te quiero matador’ – ‘I love you, matador’ – with the phrase: ‘Gracias negrito.’
Under FA regulations, using a discriminatory word, regardless of context, leaves the South American open to a charge.
United are understood to feel the use of the word, widely deployed in South America, was in an affectionate, although Cavani has been made aware that it might be misinterpreted.
But that seems unlikely to avoid the prospect of action, which leaves the striker facing an automatic three-game ban if found guilty.

New regulations, brought in by the FA in August, distinguish between language used on and off the pitch, including on social media.
But the rules, sent out to all clubs and players – via the PFA – state: “Where an offence is in writing only or via any communication device the absolute minimum match-based sanction in such cases will be three games.”
Under FA guidelines, disciplinary chiefs have until close of business on Wednesday to decide whether to charge or contact Cavani to ask for his observations.
The FA would then have until next Monday to actually issue the charge, with a hearing then being scheduled before December 21, with a commission to determine any punishment needed.

It means, unless there was a charge and immediate guilty plea, that Cavani will be available for the weekend game with West Ham and the Manchester derby against City on December 12.
He is also likely to be free to play United’s next two Prem games, at Sheffield United in the first midweek fixture of the season and the clash with Leeds on December 20.
Any ban would then kick in for the Carabao Cup quarter-final at Everton on December 23, with Cavani getting Christmas off and missing the games against Leicester on Boxing Day and home to Wolves three days later.

Man Utd ‘willing to offer Eric Bailly in swap transfer for £60m Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres’ to fix leaky defence

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly hoping they can broker a swap deal with Villarreal involving Eric Bailly and Pau Torres.
The La Liga side’s centre-back is wanted by a host of clubs across Europe, including Tottenham.

The 23-year-old Spanish international is under contract until 2024.
That deal includes a release clause of £60million – a figure United are not too keen to meet.
However, TEAMtalk claims they hope out-of-favour Bailly could prove to be their ‘trump card’ in securing Torres.
And tt states the Red Devils believe there is a chance that Villarreal could be tempted to take back their former star next year.

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to bring in a new defensive partner to play alongside Harry Maguire.
Bailly arrived at Old Trafford in 2016 in a £30m move from Villarreal and made a bright start under Jose Mourinho.
But he has struggled over recent years and seems surplus to Solskjaer’s requirements.
And the Ivory Coast ace and Phil Jones are both believed to be available for transfer.

Both Arsenal and Spurs have been linked with Bailly.
However, having identified Torres as a key target, it is now claimed the Norwegian hopes to use Bailly as bait in trying to sign him.
And if Villarreal will take him back, they hope an exchange deal can be agreed, either seeing Bailly leave permanently or even temporarily on loan.

Solskjaer warns Man Utd fans not to expect busy January transfer window and says ‘I don’t predict lot of ins and outs’

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER has warned Manchester United fans not to expect a busy January transfer window, saying: “Don’t predict lots of ins and outs.”
United were linked with a host of massive names in the summer, including £108million-rated Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.

The Red Devils did manage to sign Donny van de Beek earlier in the summer window.
A late flurry of deals saw Edinson Cavani – the hero of United’s 3-2 win over Southampton on Sunday – Alex Telles, Facundo Pellistri and Adam Diallo join on deadline day.
But United fans were ultimately left underwhelmed by their club’s lack of inactivity.
Despite supporters hopeful of some big-name signings this winter, Solskjaer has urged fans to temper expectations.

Solskjaer said: “It’s hard to predict how other teams (will act) and how the financial situation is.
“If teams need to sell or if they’ve got money to buy…
“I don’t predict a lot of ins and outs, to be fair.
“The world, financially, and in football, has changed as well also.

“It depends how the injury situations are at different teams.
“I feel very happy with my squad at the moment. We’re getting stronger.
“I still have issues every week when we only get an 18-man squad to pick from.
“Who do you leave out? I feel I’m in a good position.”
Reports claim United are still hopeful of signing Sancho BEFORE next summer’s delayed Euro 2020 tournament.
However, it’s believed a January move would be ‘all-but impossible’.
Man Utd are more likely to save money to ensure they land their long-term No1 target in the summer than bring in a cheaper alternative in January.
United have also been linked with the likes of James Maddison and Jack Grealish in the attacking midfield positions in recent months.

Man Utd sweating on SIX players ahead of Champions League clash vs PSG after injuries to De Gea and Telles

MANCHESTER UNITED could be without SIX PLAYERS for their crunch Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.
The Red Devils came from two down to beat Southampton 3-2 in the Premier League on Sunday.

But that victory came at a cost, with goalkeeper David de Gea forced off at the break after colliding with the woodwork while Alex Telles limped off with an ‘issue’ late on.
Anthony Martial travelled down to the South Coast but missed out after being taken ill.
Meanwhile, Luke Shaw has been out of action with a hamstring problem, while Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay are only expected to return to training this week after missing the recent triumphs over Istanbul Basaksehir and Southampton.
Discussing De Gea, who was replaced by Dean Henderson, boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “It’s a knock just above the knee. So we’ll have a scan and check on him tomorrow.

“Hopefully he can be ready for Wednesday but can’t promise anything now. Dean came on, very assured, had a couple of half-saves to make but he was tidy and safe with the ball at his feet.
“Anthony had to stay in the hotel, he got ill overnight and he is down here still.
“Paul and Scott hopefully can start training with us tomorrow.
“Luke is out still, we’re not 100 per cent sure.”

Solskjaer added: “Jesse [Lingard]’s back. Phil Jones is out {and also ineligible].
“David – I don’t know how he’ll react to his knock and bang.
“Alex had an issue towards the end but hopefully won’t be too bad.”
United only need one point from their final two Champions League games to reach the knockouts.
PSG head to Old Trafford this week before the trip to RB Leipzig for the final group match.
A draw in both games will see United top the group, but defeats in both clashes could see PSG and Leipzig qualify at the Red Devils’ expense.

Man Utd and Chelsea joined by City in Denis Zakaria transfer race with Monchengladbach star eyed to bolster midfield

MANCHESTER CITY are ready to battle it out with neighbours United and Chelsea in the race for Monchengladbach’s Denis Zakaria.
The 24-year-old midfielder, whose contract runs until 2022, has just returned to action after fighting back from a long-term knee injury.

Man City have contacted Monchengladbach’s Deniz Zakaria’s agent over a potential transfer moveCredit: Getty

Swiss international Zakaria came off the bench against Augsburg on November 21 for his first game since March and has since featured twice more.
It was his performances last term that caught the eye before he was sidelined, helping Gladbach to seal Champions League football.
His return to fitness has re-ignited the interest from potential suitors, and Pep Guardiola’s City are reportedly one of those keen.
And Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano told his Here We Go podcast that City have already been in contact with Zakaria’s agent.

He said: “Manchester City are focusing on Zakaria, he is so appreciated by the board, they are following him, they are in contact with his agent.
“So he’s for sure on the list of Manchester City, there is nothing advanced yet because they are not negotiating yet with Borussia Monchengladbach, they need time.”
Further reports claimed last month that both Manchester United and Chelsea were looking at making a move for the attacker.
United are in need for a defensive midfielder to replace the ageing Nemanja Matic, who turned 32 in August.

The best available free agents still on the market

Meanwhile Frank Lampard is looking for alternatives to West Ham’s Declan Rice having failed to prise him away from the London Stadium.
But the two teams could still miss out on Zakaria, with it claimed that Bayern Munich are also keen to snap him up.
Zakaria spoke earlier in the year about how flattering it was to be linked with moves to Europe’s biggest clubs.
Speaking in March, he said: “[The interest] spurs me on and gives me strength to improve further.
“The fact that other clubs are dealing with me shows that I perform well. But I only concentrate on Borussia.”
