Wes Brown says Man Utd can finish above City and win Premier League this season but predicts six-team battle

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Wes Brown believes his former employers can still win the Premier League this season.
Despite the Red Devils crashing out of the Champions League after losing to RB Leipzig on Tuesday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have impressed domestically of late.

United have won their last four matches in the top-flight where they have shown grit by coming back from behind in the victories against Everton, Southampton and West Ham.
And while they sit in sixth spot, they are only five points behind leaders Tottenham and Liverpool with a game in hand.
Speaking of their chances of winning their first league title since 2013, Brown stated that as many as six teams can lift the trophy this term.
He told Ladbrokes at its launch of the 5-A-Side Bet on Man United v Man City: “The way the season has gone so far, I think Man United could finish above Man City.

“Don’t get me wrong, it’s still going to be tough, and there are probably six – not Arsenal – teams in there that’ll be fighting for the title.
“I don’t see why United can’t finish above City and win the league, just based on how the season has gone so far.
“United came top four last season when nobody thought they would, so sometimes you have to give them credit where it’s due.
“More consistency in the Premier League is all I’d ask for – at home, especially.

“Put together a six or seven game run at Old Trafford and I don’t think anyone can have any questions about whether or not you’re genuine title contenders.”
And Brown has also tipped United to beat the Citizens at Old Trafford on Saturday.
He added: “They’re always special occasions and it doesn’t matter who is in form and who isn’t.
“I reckon both teams will score this weekend. I’m going to go with a 2-1 win for Man United.”

Paul Scholes slams David De Gea and says Man Utd goalkeeper ‘bottled’ third Leipzig goal

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Paul Scholes says keeper David De Gea ‘bottled it’ after letting in RB Leipzig’s third goal.
United were dumped out of the Champions League after a dismal 3-2 defeat to RB Leipzig in Germany.

That will only increase pressure on under-fire boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
But Scholes, speaking as part of BT Sport’s coverage of the game, was damning of United No1 De Gea’s contribution to their downfall.
He dithered as Justin Kluivert stabbed home the German’s crucial third goal.
Scholes said: “David De Gea here… he bottles it. He’s scared of getting hurt. It should never go across the box like that.

“As a goalkeeper, you come out, make yourself as big as you can.
“You might get smashed in the face, you might get injured… but he turns his back away.
“He actually makes himself smaller. For such an experienced goalkeeper, it’s criminal.”
Many United fans want to see rising star Dean Henderson be given a chance between the sticks – and this latest error might see that become a reality.

Defender and captain Harry Maguire didn’t emerge unscathed either, having the chance to clear the ball.
Scholes described him as ‘wooden’ and ‘stiff’ to sum up United’s despair.
The soft goal put United 3-0 down in the tie, leaving themselves a mountain to climb with only a draw good enough to go through to the knockout stages.
Bruno Fernandes netted an 80th minute penalty and wantaway midfielder Paul Pogba headed home a second two minutes later.

But it wasn’t enough as United dropped into the Europa League.
Speaking after the game, Solskajer said: “We showed spirit in a comeback again – it’s different to the Premier League – you can’t give a team a three goal lead and expect to come back.
“We were unlucky towards the end, I felt the character was there and I almost thought it was in at the last minute too.
“Of course you can’t say we were good enough, we weren’t.
“In a difficult group we started well, then the turning point was the defeat to Istanbul – that’s where we lost the points that we should have had.
“Today we knew we had to defend crosses and balls in the box, but we just couldn’t clear them.”

Man Utd could land Paulo Dybala in sensational swap transfer with Juventus for wantaway star Paul Pogba

MANCHESTER UNITED could land Paulo Dybala in a sensational swap with Juventus for wantaway Paul Pogba, according to reports.
On Monday, Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola revealed the 2018 World Cup winner’s time at Old Trafford was ‘over’.

And now United could land Dybala – a transfer target in the summer of 2019 – in exchange for Pogba, according to The Athletic.
Last year, Pogba, 27, revealed he was looking for a ‘new challenge’, with Real Madrid believed to be his favoured landing spot.
But now it’s most-likely Pogba will head back to Turin, where he enjoyed the best four years of his career between 2012 and 2016.
Dybala, 27, is struggling to nail down a regular starting spot in Andrea Pirlo’s starting XI, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Alvaro Morata the main men this season.

It’s even claimed the Argentine has been offered to United, Arsenal and Chelsea in a bid to force a 2021 transfer.
But Pirlo is desperate to continue his midfield revamp, and having played alongside Pogba at Juve is believed to view the Frenchman as the perfect addition.
Raiola said: “I can say that it’s over for Paul Pogba at Manchester United.”

He went on to say that it is time for United’s board to stop skirting around the subject and sell him soon before he becomes a free agent.

Pogba’s current deal is up in 18 months, with Raiola insisting his client has no intention of signing an extension.
Raiola continued: “It is useless to go around it… it’s better to speak clearly, look ahead and not waste time looking for culprits.
“Paul at Manchester United is unhappy, he is no longer able to express himself as he would like and as expected of him.
“He has to change teams, he has to change the air.
“He has a contract that will expire in a year and a half, in the summer of 2022, but I think the best solution for the parties is to sell in the next market.
“Otherwise, the Old Trafford club, with whom relations are excellent, knows well that they would risk losing him on a free transfer, given that for the moment it is not the player’s intention to extend the contract.
“If someone doesn’t understand it, they understand very little about football.
“In any case, let them blame me if Paul leaves next summer.”

On Monday, Raiola claimed Pogba’s time at Man Utd was ‘over’
Raiola’s comments are believed to have infuriating Man Utd chiefs, according to The Athletic.
United have a tempestuous relationship with the Italian-born Dutchman, with Sir Alex Ferguson famously ‘distrusting’ the super-agent, even once calling him a ‘s*** bag’.
Meanwhile, Dybala has featured in just six matches in all competitions for Juve this season, failing to score or register an assist in Serie A.
The Argentine had appeared to be on the brink of a move to Old Trafford in August 2019 only for the deal to fall apart after his agent was claimed to have demanded a £13.7m payment to buy image rights from a third party.

Man Utd line up £14m January transfer bid for Real Madrid’s Lucas Vazquez with versatile star’s contract up in summer

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly looking to prise away Real Madrid’s versatile star Lucas Vazquez in January.
The 29-year-old – who has featured in 12 games in all competitions this season – could be available on the cheap with his contract set to expire next summer.

And with the player free to negotiate with clubs in the New Year, Los Blancos are keen to avoid losing him on a free.
According to Fichajes.net, the Red Devils are lining up an offer of around £14million for the Spain international.
They state that the right winger – who has often been deployed as a right-back this term – could be brought in to provide competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
However they state that Zinedine Zidane may be reluctant to part ways with the three-time Champions League winner due to his fondness of him.

Real fan Vazquez has never played outside his native country having come through the club’s academy.
Since making his debut in the 2015-16 season, he has chipped in with 24 goals in 218 games, winning 11 major honours.
Vazquez isn’t the only player United are said to be looking to bring to Old Trafford from Madrid.
It has also been claimed that Atletico ace Kieran Trippier is a possible target for the club.

The former Tottenham defender has 18 months on his contract at the Wanda Metropolitano, with United believed to be monitoring his situation.
Just like with Vazquez, Trippier would be signed to initially provide cover for Wan-Bissaka.
Trippier has featured in all of Atletico’s ten LaLiga games this term, with Diego Simeone’s men sitting top of the table having conceded just two goals.

Man Utd hope to escape Edinson Cavani racism ban with ‘cultural context’ argument after Uruguay star’s ‘negrito’ post

MANCHESTER UNITED are hopeful Edinson Cavani will escape a ban for his ‘negrito’ Instagram comment thanks to a ‘cultural context’ argument.
The Uruguayan striker, 33, wrote ‘gracias negrito’ in response to a friend congratulating his two-goal performance during the 3-2 win over Southampton.

Man Utd will present a ‘cultural’ argument to help Cavani avoid a ban for his ‘negrito’ post

Cavani is set to be banned for at least three matches by the FACredit: PA:Press Association

Cavani – who joined United in the summer on a free transfer – faces a minimum three-game ban from the FA for the comment, despite the striker offering a public apology.
The former Paris Saint-Germain star said: “The message I posted after the game on Sunday was intended as an affectionate greeting to a friend, thanking him for his congratulations after the game.
“The last thing I wanted to do was cause offence to anyone.
“I am completely opposed to racism and deleted the message as soon as it was explained that it can be interpreted differently. I would like to sincerely apologise for this.”

But United hope to escape any suspension by offering ‘cultural context’, according to The Athletic.
It’s claimed United will show proof the term is only used by way of a nickname for the friend in question AND that it’s commonly used in his circle of pals.
Linguist Amparo Fernandez has also backed-up the claim by suggesting it is a term commonly used to show affection.

However, both Cavani and Man Utd are aware of the negative connotations of the word and will accept a punishment should it befall them.

At the time of the incident, a United statement read: “It is clear to us there was absolutely no malicious intent behind Edinson’s message.
“He deleted it as soon as he was informed that it could be misconstrued.
“Edinson has issued an apology for any unintentional offence caused.
“Manchester United and all of our players are fully committed to the fight against racism.”
The FA have until close of play on Monday December 7 to issue the charge.
A hearing can then being scheduled before December 21, with a commission to determine any punishment needed.
It means, unless there was a charge and immediate guilty plea, Cavani will be available for the Manchester derby against City on December 12 having already started the 3-1 win over West Ham.
He is also likely to be free to play United’s next two Premier League games, at Sheffield United in the first midweek fixture of the season and the clash with Leeds on December 20.
Any ban would then kick in for the Carabao Cup quarter-final at Everton on December 23.
Cavani would then get Christmas off and miss games against Leicester on Boxing Day and home to Wolves three days later.

How Premier League table would look based on first-half performances with Man Utd in relegation zone with just ONE win

MANCHESTER UNITED would be in the relegation zone if matches ended at half-time.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad are proving to be slow starters in the Premier League so far this season.

Man Utd would be 19th in the PL if games finished at half-time

In fact, if games were to last just 45 minutes, United would be 19th in the table – with just ONE win from their first ten matches.
Most-recently, United went into half-time losing 1-0 at West Ham.
Paul Pogba, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford all scored in a 13-minute period after the break to ensure they travelled back to Manchester with all three points.
But it wasn’t without a scare… and it wasn’t for the first time this season.

⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford
Incredibly, United have gone into half-time winning a game just ONCE.
On five occasions, they’ve gone into the break level-pegging, but have been trailing four times.
Overall, United would have picked up just eight points if matches finished at half-time, with a goal difference of -6.

The only team to have struggled more are basement-boys Sheffield United, with seven points – far superior to their one, real-life point.

In reality, United sit fifth in the Premier League with 19 points – and they’ve got their second-half performances to thank for it.
If matches were ONLY based on second-halves, United would sit fourth in the table, behind only Chelsea, Leicester and Liverpool.
Man Utd have racked up six second-half wins from their ten games, losing three.
But comebacks are nothing new for United.
‘Fergie-time’ saved their skin on countless occasions during the 1990s and 2000s.
In fact, no team in Premier League history has earned as many points from losing positions as United (385).
Their win over West Ham on Saturday meant they overtook Tottenham (383 points) for that honour.
This season alone, United have picked up 15 of their 19 points having once trailed in the game – a league high.
Liverpool sit second this season, having earned nine points from losing positions.

How Man Utd could line up for vital RB Leipzig clash with Ighalo up front as Cavani and Martial ruled out with injury

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER may be forced into starting Odion Ighalo against RB Leipzig in Manchester United’s crucial Champions League clash.
The Red Devils face the German outfit at the Red Bull Arena on Tuesday evening knowing a point will see them progress into the knockout stages.

This is how Manchester United could start against RB Leipzig on Tuesday

United currently sit top of Group H on goal difference alone, with Paris Saint-Germain and Leipzig both also having nine points.
But in a blow for the Premier League giants, they are a facing a mini-crisis up top with Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani to miss the game through injury.
Though Solskjaer did reveal that David De Gea and Luke Shaw are fit enough to be in contention to feature.
He said: “David is back again. Luke will be travelling with us.

“Anthony and Edinson, they had minor things, but they won’t make the trip, no.”
Now fully fit, De Gea could immediately replace Dean Henderson between the sticks for the crunch clash.
However Shaw could have to settle for a place on the bench with left-back Alex Telles impressing in his absence.
England youth international Aaron Wan-Bissaka will once again slot in at right-back, with a likely centre-back pairing to consist of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

Solskjaer could opt to start a diamond midfield formation having beaten Leipzig 5-0 in October using the system.
Fred’s suspension could see Nemanja Matic start as the defensive midfielder.
Paul Pogba could then partner Donny van de Beek in the middle of the pitch, with Bruno Fernandes deployed behind the strikers.
Marcus Rashford will almost certainly spearhead the attack, and he could play alongside Nigeria international Ighalo.
The ex-Watford striker has featured in just four matches this season, and hasn’t appeared in the Premier League since the opening day defeat against Crystal Palace.
Though he did come off the bench in the 3-1 defeat against PSG last week.
Solskjaer could also choose to partner Mason Greenwod next to Rashford against Leipzig.

Five transfers Man Utd could pull off this summer including Sancho and Haaland as Woodward vows to back Solskjaer

MANCHESTER UNITED chief Ed Woodward revealed the club would focus on doing big business in summer transfer windows moving forward.
At the recent Manchester United fans’ forum meeting, Woodward revealed the club would target a ‘long-term approach to recruitment, focused on the summer windows’.

How Man Utd could look with FIVE new signings next summer

United signed Donny van de Beek, Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles, Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo in the summer of 2021 – spending around £100million.
And Woodward’s most-recent claim suggests the big-money buys are set to continue moving forward.
With that in mind, we’ve taken a look at five players Man Utd COULD sign next summer…
    JADON SANCHO

Man Utd will be desperate to finally land No1 target Sancho next summerCredit: AFP
THE saga rumbled on all summer, but United never landed their man.

Borussia Dortmund were clear in their demands from the get-go: £108m for Sancho or no deal.
United missed the August 10 deadline set by the Germans only to put in an offer of closer to £60m-70m up front and the remainder paid in instalments.
The bid was swiftly rejected, with Old Trafford chiefs still confident they would land their No1 target before deadline day.
But as time ran out, United were forced to look elsewhere and worked quickly to bring in FOUR new faces on deadline day.

Sancho, 20, is still very much at the top of United’s wish-list – but they are expected to wait until the summer with the club still desperately crying out for a natural right-winger.
The England ace is believed to have agreed to personal terms – United now just need to tempt Dortmund into selling.
    ERLING HAALAND

Erling Haaland could be the perfect fit up front for UnitedCredit: AP:Associated Press
WHILE a right-winger is a must moving forward, it seems so too is a natural striker.
Marcus Rashford has been excellent cutting inside from the left-wing in recent months.
But both he and Anthony Martial seem more adept on the wing than in the natural No9 role.
Cavani has brought his goal-scoring know-how with him to Old Trafford.
But he only signed a one-year contract, with an option for a second.
Even if the Uruguayan does stay for the 2021-22 season, United would love another natural centre-forward – perhaps a more youthful one, too.
Haaland has long been linked with United, even since his RB Salzburg days.
Real Madrid are keen on the 20-year-old Dortmund striker, but Solskjaer would love to bring his fellow Norwegian – whom he coached at Molde – to Old Trafford.

    KALIDOU KOULIBALY

United could look to bolster their defensive ranks with a move for KoulibalyCredit: EPA
ANOTHER area of weakness for United is in the heart of defence.
Harry Maguire – the world’s most-expensive defender at £85m – has been a near-ever-present since joining in the summer of 2019.
But alongside him it’s a different story, with the likes of Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe all tried.
Luke Shaw has also played on the left of a back-three at times.
Another big-name United have long been linked with is 29-year-old Koulibaly – with rivals Liverpool and Man City also keen on the Napoli ace.
Man Utd are also believed to be linked with Villarreal star Pau Torres – and could give up Eric Bailly to get a deal over the line.
    EDUARDO CAMAVINGA

Camavinga would be a superb fit in a deep-lying role at Old TraffordCredit: AFP
BIZARRELY, United’s biggest strength is arguably also their biggest weakness.
Solskjaer has the likes of Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek, Bruno Fernandes, Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic in his central midfield ranks.
But finding the right combination has proven difficult.
United could decide to bring in a few new faces, while selling a couple in order to enjoy a fresh start.
Fernandes will almost-certainly start in the No10 role – leaving TWO free spots in the deeper roles.
One of those could be filled by Rennes wonderkid Camavinga.
The Frenchman, 18, has shown skill far beyond his years and is said to be keen on a move to Real Madrid.
But with Los Blancos also targeting the likes of Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, they may be forced to hold off signing Camavinga.
Most-naturally-suited to a deep-lying role, he would fit in superbly at Old Trafford… if they manage to sign him.
Camavinga is set to cost just £45m, which could be a superb investment given his age and potential.
He also recently sacked his agent seemingly in a bid to force a move to one of Europe’s giants. Watch this space.
    DENIS ZAKARIA

Zakaria would be the perfect partner for Camavinga in midfieldCredit: Reuters
ANOTHER well-suited option for United would be Borussia Monchengladbach ace Denis Zakaria.
Wanted by Chelsea and Man City as well as United, it’s easy to see why the Swiss defensive midfielder, 24, is in demand.
City are claimed to have already made contact with Zakaria’s agent.
But United would love to partner Camavinga with Zakaria given the chance, in what would be a well-balanced – and young – double-pivot.
