How Man Utd could line up against City in Manchester derby with Martial starting up front and Cavani doubtful

MANCHESTER UNITED host rivals City in another eagerly-anticipated derby this Saturday.
The Red Devils welcome their Manchester rivals to Old Trafford desperate for a result in a bid to get over their European catastrophe midweek.

How Man Utd could line-up for this weekend’s derby

United lost 3-2 to RB Leipzig in their final Champions League group game needing only a point to progress to the last-16.
Instead, they now go into the Europa League last-32 draw after finishing third.
Man Utd currently sit sixth in the Premier League just one point and one place above Pep Guardiola’s City.
However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have to make do without in-form striker Edinson Cavani for the 183rd Manchester derby.

The Uruguayan has not recovered from the knock sustained during last weekend’s win over West Ham.
Solskjaer did have some good new for fans, though, as he revealed Anthony Martial would be fit to play following his own injury battle.
The Old Trafford boss said: “Anthony will definitely be involved.

“Edinson has been on the grass today, but I’m not sure if he’ll make it.

Another way Solskjaer could send out his team vs City

“Apart from that, we’ve had a couple of days of recovery and we should be ready.”
The update means David De Gea is expected to keep his place in goal, despite struggling with an injury ever since the 3-2 win over Southampton.
Luke Shaw will fight with Alex Telles for the starting left-back spot, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the opposite flank.
Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof look set to continue their partnership in the heart of the back-four in a 4-2-3-1.
In midfield, Fred could return having been banned in Europe AND left out of last weekend’s win over West Ham.
The Brazilian will hope to start alongside Scott McTominay in the two deeper midfield positions, with Nemanja Matic also hoping to get a look in.

Bruno Fernandes is a near-certainty to start in the No10 role, with Donny van de Beek expected to start on the bench.
Anthony Martial appears to be the man tasked with leading the line, with Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood expected to start on the wings.
Rashford could be given the chance to lead the line, with Martial on the left wing, while Juan Mata will hope to start at right-wing, with Greenwood having played midweek.
However, Solskjaer could opt to continue with his 3-4-1-2 experiment.
In that scenario, Shaw would likely join Maguire and Lindelof in a back-three, with Axel Tuanzebe also in with a chance of starting.
Wan-Bissaka and Telles would then line-up in the wing-back slots, with two central midfielders.
Rashford and Martial would almost certainly start together in central-striking roles, with Fernandes just behind them.

Man Utd face fixture chaos with Europa League KO stages along with Man City and Chelsea showdowns in February and March

MANCHESTER UNITED face a fixture nightmare in 2021 after dropping down into the Europa League.
And Arsenal, Tottenham and Leicester are also facing a similar headache due to their involvement in the second-string competition.

Manchester United were dumped out of the Champions League after losing to RB Leipzig

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men will be paying the price for losing away at RB Leipzig as they could potentially play a whopping EIGHT games in February.
Between January 30-March 20, the Red Devils could be involved in an incredible 14 matches in just 49 days.
However they would be only play this many fixtures should they advance into the Europa League last 16 as well as progressing in both the Carabao and FA Cups.
In that time, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men will face Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City all away in the Premier League.

But their clash at Stamford Bridge would have to be rescheduled for a later date should they reach the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, February 28.
Another tie that would have to be pushed back is their trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace.
United are set to face the Eagles on March 20 before the international break, but that is also the weekend where the FA Cup quarter-final matches are due to take place.
And United’s clash away at Burnley still needs to be rearranged after their season-opening match was postponed following the club’s participation in the semi-final of the Europa League last term.

    Man Utd’s fixture pile-up

    January 30 – Arsenal (a) – PL
    February 2 – Southampton (h) – PL
    February 6 – Everton (h) – PL
February 10 – Possible FA Cup fifth round tie*
    February 13 – West Brom (a) – PL
    February 18 – Europa League-last 32 first leg
    February 20 – Newcastle (h) – PL
    February 25 – Europa League-last 32 second leg
    February 27 – Chelsea (a) – PL
February 28 – Possible Carabao Cup final*
    March 6 – Man City (a) – PL
    March 11 – Possible Europa League-last 16 first leg*
    March 13 – West Ham (h) – PL
    March 18 – Possible Europa League-last 16 second leg*
    March 20 – Crystal Palace (a) – PL
    March 20 – Possible FA Cup quarter-final*
*Subject to whether Man Utd progress through

Playing in the Europa League will again hamper United’s recovery time as they will have no week-long break between first and second leg ties.
Boss Solskjaer has already vented his anger at fixture congestion this season following a Champions League clash played in Turkey.
Premier League leaders Tottenham are also facing the same fixture nightmare as just like United, they are in the Europa League and both domestic cup competitions.
And in February they could be involved in all four competitions too where they could partake in eight games.
It is the same case for their North London rivals Arsenal who will play a guaranteed seven games in February if they are knocked out before the FA Cup fifth round.
Leicester will play at least six matches in February, as their clash against the Gunners on February 27 may have to be rearranged should Mikel Arteta’s reach the League Cup final that weekend.

Man Utd outcast Marcos Rojo wanted by Sheff Utd but £80k-a-week wage demands could scupper transfer

SHEFFIELD UNITED have reportedly identified Manchester United outcast Marcos Rojo as a possible January signing.
The 30-year-old will be available in a cut-price deal with the centre-back in the final year of his contract at Old Trafford.

And the Red Devils will be keen to sell him with the player yet to feature this season – despite him being named in the club’s Premier League squad.
Along with Rojo, United are also desperate to offload the likes of Phil Jones, Sergio Romero and Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
According to the Daily Mail, Sheffield United are keen to revive their interest in the Argentine defender in the New Year.
The Blades were interested in the ex-Sporting Lisbon man in the summer, but the move failed to materialise.

However the club are desperate for new signings as they sit rooted to the bottom of the table after 11 games played.
It has been stated that the basement boys are looking at structuring a package for Rojo as they try and tempt him to move to Bramall Lane.
However his £80,000-a-week wages could prove to be a stumbling block for the South Yorkshire outfit.
There is still the question as to whether Rojo will want to join a club that are in a relegation battle.

Should they fail in their attempts to sign Rojo, then Chris Wilder’s men will turn to Preston North End’s Ben Davies.
It is understood that the Championship side will want at least £10million for the 25-year-old.
Scottish club Celtic are also believed to be keen on Davies having sent scouts to watch him in action.

The 3-2 defeat in Germany saw United drop into the Europa League.
Man Utd chiefs are believed to be standing behind Solskjaer despite the team’s troubles.
But fans and pundits alike are wondering whether United could be tempted by Pochettino.
The Argentine has been out of work for over a year since being sacked by Tottenham and replaced by Jose Mourinho.

Since then, Pochettino has been linked with a host of jobs including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Zenit St Petersburg.
But out of all clubs rumoured to be in for the ex-Spurs and Southampton chief, none have been linked more strongly than Man Utd.
The Athletic’s Man Utd expert Laurie Whitwell recently fielded fans’ questions.
During the Q&A, he revealed Pochettino would ‘definitely’ be keen on taking over at Old Trafford should he be approached.

Whitwell said: “[Man Utd] would definitely take the job.
“He’s been out of work for more than a year now and United are still one of the best draws in football.”
But Whitwell confirmed United chiefs’ commitment to Solskjaer AND revealed bringing in Pochettino does not necessarily guarantee success.
He continued: “I think that if United hired him (the club are adamant Solskjaer is their guy still, by the way), Pochettino would be a good choice.
“He showed at Tottenham he can build a team and overshoot expectations.
“That being said, I don’t think he’s the guarantee of success some seem to paint him as.
“He didn’t win any trophies at Spurs, or with any of his previous clubs, and his style relies on emotion.”

Bruno Fernandes breaks silence on Man Utd Champions League exit and slams RB Leipzig loss as ‘not good enough’

BRUNO FERNANDES has broken his silence after Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League, slamming his side’s appalling performance.
The Red Devils slumped to 3-0 down in their crunch clash with RB Leipzig in Germany, with a late rally not enough to save their skin.

United ultimately lost 3-2 needing only a point to progress to the Champions League last-16.
Now, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Co will be preparing for life back in the Europa League after finishing third in the ‘Group of Death’ behind Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain.
And Fernandes has lashed out at his side’s performance, saying they must do ‘much better’.
Taking to Instagram, Fernandes wrote: “Not good enough from us.

“We have to do much better to represent a such big club and especially playing in the @championsleague with big teams!”
Meanwhile, fed-up United chiefs want Paul Pogba out of the club in the January transfer window.
Mino Raiola destabilised Solskjaer’s Leipzig preparations by claiming the France star’s time at the club was ‘over’.

United had flat-out refused to be bullied by Raiola, who has been an irritant during Pogba’s second spell at the club.

But now the Red Devils top brass are ready to accept defeat and let their £89million club-record signing go.
Pogba is believed to favour a move back to Juventus – and could complete a swap-transfer move involving Paulo Dybala.
The Argentine, 27, is struggling to nail down a regular starting spot in Andrea Pirlo’s starting XI, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Alvaro Morata the main men this season.
And the forward could be tempted to join United, who were keen on him in 2019 only for the move to collapse over a reported £13.7m third party image rights payment.

Would-be applicants are told: “To manage and co-ordinate the Academy scouting operation, including market intelligence in club’s Southern region.

“Scout and recruit players with the potential to progress and develop towards achieving a full-time scholarship.
“Gain and develop an in-depth understanding of the academy player market within the South region to support our market intelligence and decision-making.”
Candidates will be required to liaise with the team’s scouting network in the south and compile performance reports and videos of promising kids.
They must also understand the financial rules surrounding the signing of teenage talent.
The ad continues: “Performance and process management of casual scouts in the South region and contribute towards their development.
“Have a working knowledge of the Premier League/Football League rules i.e. regulations relating to player transfers and squad composition and EPPP guidelines relating to player compensation and migration.

“Promote a positive market identity for Manchester United with agents, representatives, clubs, federations, families and all key contacts.”
The successful candidate must have a “minimum of three years demonstrable experience of working within the scouting department of a professional football club’s academy and a proven track record in recruitment of academy players”.
And they must possess knowledge of elite player development, an in-depth understanding of “English football in the South region at all levels (essential)”, plus the ability to write and prepare detailed scouting reports and the FA’s Talent Identification Level 2 qualification.
